Several reports have confirmed that Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei died Thursday(September 5) at a Kenyan hospital where she was being treated after 80% of her body was burned in an attack by her partner.

Cheptegei was only 33 years old.

A spokesperson at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret City confirmed Cheptegei’s death on Thursday. Menach said the long-distance runner died early in the morning after her organs failed. She had been fully sedated on admission at the hospital.

Cheptegei ran in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics almost a month before the attack. She finished in 44th place.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said Monday that Cheptegei’s partner, Dickson Ndiema, bought a can of gasoline, poured it on her and set her ablaze during a disagreement Sunday. Ndiema was also burned and was being treated at the same hospital.

Menach said Ndiema was still in the intensive care unit with burns over 30% of his body but was “improving and stable.”

Cheptegei’s parents said their daughter bought land in Trans Nzoia to be near the county’s many athletic training centers. A report filed by the local chief said the two were heard fighting over the land where her house was built before the attack.

The Uganda Athletics Federation eulogized Cheptegei on X, posting, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”

Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare called the attack “a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete.”

On this date over three decades ago, a blue-collar rapper from Queens named Young MC dropped his debut album Stone Cold Rhymin’, on the Delicious Vinyl imprint.

There wasn’t much fanfare to the album besides the rapper/actor’s legendary “Bust A Move” track, which received a platinum plaque about a year after its release, appeared in popular silver screen classics such as Dude, Where’s My Car, and the 2017 Stephen King horror flick It. The song continues to stand the test of time.

With musical genius Quincy Jones behind the boards for Mr. Marvin Young’s debut, the 13-track full-length studio album was a sure-shot hit for its time and has secured Young MC a place in Hip Hop history.

Cleotrapa Moves Past Ice Spice Tour Drama, Joins Azealia Banks for Halloween Performance

Screen Shot 2024 09 05 at 8.05.16 AM

Cleotrapa is forging ahead after her tumultuous experience touring with Ice Spice, finding support and a new opportunity with rap veteran Azealia Banks. The 26-year-old rapper, who recently exposed her former friend Ice Spice in a 6-part TikTok series, is set to perform alongside Banks at Terminal 5 in New York City on Halloween.

Azealia Banks, 33, took to X (formerly Twitter) on September 4 to announce the collaboration, using the moment to throw shade at Ice Spice, 24, for her alleged mistreatment of Cleotrapa during the U.S. leg of her Y2K! World Tour. The “212” artist made it clear that Cleotrapa will have a much better experience this time around, emphasizing the respect and professionalism she plans to extend to her fellow artist.

“I don’t like how everyone is trying to make Cleotrapa look. Any fcking who @iamcleotrapa will be performing with me on Halloween Oct 31. at @Terminal5NYC,” Banks wrote. “She will be paid, have her own space to glam, whatever she wants on her rider… because I have fcking respect & class.”

The post comes after Cleotrapa detailed the alleged mistreatment she endured on tour with Ice Spice, including not being paid, having to cover her own hotel and food expenses, and being isolated from the rest of the tour crew. These allegations have sparked widespread conversation on social media, with many fans rethinking their support for Ice Spice, a Grammy Award nominee.

Banks didn’t stop at defending Cleotrapa; she also took direct aim at Ice Spice’s manager, James Rosemond Jr., who had previously blamed the tour debacle on Cleotrapa and her team in a series of posts on X. Banks was quick to call out Rosemond, criticizing him for his comments.

“Ice Spice’s manager is a bird *ss n*gg* 4 trying to add insult to injury when a young girl is expressing how she feels. He’s trying to make Cleo look like an amateur when the fact that he’s even chiming in at all is ghetto, low class and a huge sign of having zero skin in the game,” Banks wrote. She added, “How about he get his artist some filler for those smile lines, she’s aging like f*cking milk.”

While Ice Spice has addressed some of the allegations, the damage may have already been done. The claims of mistreatment have undoubtedly affected the public’s perception of her, despite her recent success and accolades.

Will Smith and Paramount Pictures Sued for Copyright Infringement Over ‘Gemini Man’

Independence Day Director Says Will Smith Was Nearly Rejected For Role Because Hes Black

Will Smith and Paramount Pictures find themselves at the center of a seven-figure lawsuit, as science fiction author Kissinger Sibanda accuses them of copyright infringement. The lawsuit claims that the 2019 film Gemini Man plagiarized Sibanda’s 2011 novel The Return to Gibraltar.

According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Sibanda, an American/South African national who is also an attorney, alleges that the concept of Gemini Man—which follows a former hitman targeted by a younger clone of himself—bears significant similarities to his book. Sibanda’s novel centers around an African American character who is cloned and unwillingly involved in a time-traveling program, a narrative he believed would be a perfect fit for Will Smith as the lead.

The lawsuit claims that the defendants, which include Will Smith, Skydance Productions, Gemini Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and several others, copied themes, plots, characterizations, and cultural subtexts from The Return to Gibraltar to create Gemini Man. Sibanda also alleges that after releasing his book in 2011, the defendants altered their marketing strategy for the film, reflecting the ideas from his novel.

Gemini Man, directed by Ang Lee and starring Will Smith, had been in development since 1997, with various A-list actors attached over the years. The screenplay was credited to Darren Lemke, David Benioff, and Billy Ray, with no mention of Sibanda’s work.

Sibanda’s lawsuit states that he shared his book idea with Will Smith’s stunt double in 2012, although he admits he cannot recall the stunt double’s name. He believes limited discovery could reveal the individual, as the defendants likely have records of Smith’s stunt doubles. Sibanda also claims to have sent a copy of his book to William Morris Endeavor, a top Hollywood talent agency, further bolstering his argument that his work was appropriated.

In 2020, Sibanda sent a legal letter to the defendants seeking resolution, but he alleges he never received a response. Instead, he claims the defendants offered a “zero-dollar walk away,” prompting him to file the lawsuit demanding $1.7 million in damages.

Gemini Man, despite its high-profile cast and a reported budget of $138 million, was not a commercial success, grossing only $173 million worldwide. As of now, Will Smith and the other defendants have yet to respond to the lawsuit.

Tameka “Tiny” Harris Takes the Stand in Federal Court, Denies “Money Grab” in Lawsuit

titiny tiptiny

Tameka “Tiny” Harris, wife of rapper T.I., took the witness stand in a federal courtroom in California on Wednesday to address allegations that she and her husband staged a shakedown against MGA Entertainment. The Harris couple has accused the toy giant of stealing the likeness and style of their daughter’s teen pop group, OMG Girlz, to create the wildly popular “L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G.” dolls.

Tiny, who gained fame as a member of the 90s R&B group Xscape and co-wrote the hit song “No Scrubs” for TLC, was the first witness called to testify in the trial that began on Tuesday in Santa Ana. Speaking in a calm and measured tone, Tiny firmly denied that the lawsuit was motivated by financial gain. “I’m not here for a money grab. I live very comfortably, me and my husband. We’re doing pretty well for ourselves,” she stated. Tiny emphasized that her primary concern was for the members of the OMG Girlz — her daughter Zonnique “Star” Pullins, Bahja “Beauty” Rodriguez, and Breaunna “Babydoll” Womack — who she believes deserve recognition and compensation for their creative contributions.

“It’s more about the girls. I feel like the girls built a brand, and they work hard for it,” Tiny testified. She argued that it was unjust for a large corporation like MGA to profit from the image and style that the OMG Girlz had cultivated without including them in the success. “I don’t feel that it’s right for a big company to come and take something they built and not make them a part of it,” she added.

The legal dispute dates back to December 2020, when Tiny and T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, sent a cease-and-desist letter to MGA, demanding the toy company halt distribution of its O.M.G. dolls, alleging that the dolls’ name, vibrant hair, and unique wardrobe were directly inspired by the OMG Girlz. MGA responded swiftly with a lawsuit seeking a court ruling that the company owns the name and image of the dolls. In response, the Harris couple filed a cross-complaint for trade dress infringement.

This courtroom confrontation is not the first time the two sides have clashed. An initial trial in January 2023 ended in a mistrial, and a second trial later that year resulted in a loss for the Harris couple. However, that verdict was overturned due to a change in the law, leading to the current proceedings.

With T.I. watching from the gallery, Tiny made it clear that their fight was about principle and justice for the OMG Girlz. The outcome of this trial could set a significant precedent for how intellectual property rights are protected in the entertainment and toy industries, especially when it comes to the creative contributions of artists and performers.

As the trial continues, the Harris family and their supporters are hoping that their case will lead to a favorable outcome, ensuring that the hard work and creativity of the OMG Girlz are properly acknowledged and compensated.
