“No Question” That Israel Will Compete At Paris Olympics, IOC President Says

IOC President Thomas Bach has made it clear that Israel will compete at the upcoming Olympics in Paris. “No, there is no question about this,” Bach said when asked if Israel could be banned from participating. A handful of protests have been made since Israel resumed hostilities with Palestine last October. These protests have primarily stemmed from Russia, who are currently prohibited from participating due to doping scandals and their invasion of Ukraine.

Furthermore, Bach said there would be special attention given to Israeli athletes who compete outside secured venues, such as cyclists. “Since the heinous attack on the Israeli team [Munich 1972], there were always special measures being taken with Israeli athletes. The authorities feel comfortable that the same will be true of course also for Paris, Marseille, or wherever there will be Israeli representation,” Bach noted. At the time of writing, 55 Israeli athletes have qualified for the Games.

Kevin Durant Sets High Team USA Benchmark For Olympics

As the Games draw closer and closer, more and more athletes have begun to speak on their intentions about the Games. Kevin Durant has stated that he wants Team USA to “really make a statement” at the Olympics with “40, 50-point wins” against their opponents. There are four Olympic berths left to decide for the men’s competition. However, currently, the USA’s opponents could include France, South Sudan, Canada, Japan, Germany, Serbia, and Australia. Durant, a member of the initial player pool for Team USA, is a frontrunner to return to the squad, which is expected to be announced in May.

During the 2020 Olympics, in which Team USA won gold, they averaged a margin of victory of 25.4 points. However, this involved bouncing back from an opening game loss to France. They would later beat by five in the gold medal match. Only one of Team USA’s games, a 120-66 win over Iran, met Durant’s 2024 benchmark of “40, 50-point wins”. Team USA has won every men’s basketball gold medal since the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Kevin Durant Confronts Mavs Fans After Alleged Disrespect

Meanwhile, There was a tense moment before Suns-Mavericks last week as Durant appeared to take issue with comments made by two courtside Mavs fans. As the Suns came out onto the court for warmups, two Mavs fans appeared to shout something at Durant. In response, Durant came over to the couple and began staring them down as one of them continually asked him for a high five. However, the footage of the incident posted online makes it unclear what was said to Durant. However, it’s clear that the Suns veteran was not happy with what was said. Furthermore, Durant was later seen going back over to the couple along with arena personnel.

The Suns would end up losing by ten as the team continued in their struggles to find consistency. Durant had 23 points and 6 assists in the loss. Furthermore, he did not address the pregame incident in the postgame media scrum. This remains a developing story.

Manny Pacquiao Has Olympic Boxing Appeal Rejected

The IOC has refused to amend its rules regarding the age limit of 40 for boxers at the Olympics, meaning that retired legend Manny Pacquiao will not be able to compete in Paris this summer. The 45-year-old Pacquiao, who retired in 2021, had expressed interest in representing The Philippines at the Games later this year. Pacquaio had not officially announced he would seek a place at this month’s qualifying event in Italy or a second event in Thailand in May.

Furthermore, the IOC also rejected The Philippines’ request to be allocated universality places for the boxing events. Universality places provide underrepresented countries places in various Olympic events. “Universality places are not allocated to [teams] with an average of more than eight athletes in individual sports/disciplines at the last two editions of the Olympic Games. This is the case for the Philippine Olympic Committee,” the IOC explained.

Tyson Fury Postpones Oleksandr Usyk Bout After Training Injury

Elsewhere, Tyson Fury’s bout with Oleksandr Uysk has been postponed until May. Fury postponed his February 17 fight against Usyk after suffering an injury in training. “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition. I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event. Furthermore, I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed. I can only apologize to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Fury said in a statement. Per the British fighter, he suffered an orbital laceration while sparring.

Fury and Usyk signed fight contracts last year for the first undisputed heavyweight fight in boxing’s four-belt era. Fury currently holds the WBC belt while Usyk holds the WBA, IBF, and WBO belts. The fight was originally scheduled for April 2023, with a fight slated for London’s Wembley Stadium. However, the fight fell through at the last moment. Instead, Uysk fulfilled his mandatory WBA defense against Daniel Dubois in an August fight in Poland. Meanwhile, Fury has not fought since beating Derek Chisora in December.

Draymond Green Missing From Initial Team USA Olympic Pool, Execs Explain Why

Draymond Green was the most notable name missing from the initial 41-player pool for the Team USA Men’s Basketball Olympic Roster. The exclusion of Green, who won gold in 2016 and 2020, was surprising given that his club head coach, Steve Kerr, is also the national team coach. However, USA Basketball executive director explained that it was Green’s on-court antics keeping him out of contention at the moment. “His contributions have been significant, and he is a real part of the legacy of this organization for his excellence. But I think just in lieu of sort of what’s transpired this year, we made a decision to not have [Green] on this list with this particular point in time with the process,” Hill said in a media Zoom call.

Green will be able to play his way into the roster over the next few months. The team isn’t expected to be picked up May at the earliest. Meanwhile, the rest of the list is a veritable list of bona fide NBA talent. LeBron, Steph Curry, Jayson Tatum, and Joel Embiid all appear on the list. However, there is also a cache of younger stars like Walker Kessler, Chet Holgrem, and Tyrese Haliburton.

Dwight Howard Wants Olympic Shot

One name also missing, though much less surprisingly, is Dwight Howard. Howard is currently out of basketball after leaving Taiwan and failing to sign with an NBA team. However, the former NBA starter made it clear last year that he was an Olympic shot. “I like what I see 💪🏾but don’t leave ya boy out🤔. If ya leave me out I’m playing with Taiwan and I’m dropping 85 😅#nba #basketball #legends,” Howard wrote last year. There’s just one problem with this – Taiwan can’t qualify for the Olympics. Taiwan is not one of the 24 remaining teams that will compete for one of the four remaining Olympic spots this July.

However, Howard does plenty of international experience. In the late 2000s, Howard was a go-to pick for the national team. He won a gold medal at the Beijing Games in 2008 as well as a World Cup bronze in 2006. Despite this, his time out of the NBA as well as his ongoing legal issues mean that there is very little chance that Howard will be headed to Paris.

Donovan Mitchell Wants To Play With LeBron James At The Olympics

After a historic night with the Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell expressed a desire to link up with another team legend this summer. “I’d love to come back and play in the Olympics. This city is a very electric basketball city,” Mitchell said after scoring 45 points against the Nets in Paris. Mitchell, in his second season in Cleveland, is hoping to join LeBron as part of the Team USA men’s basketball team at the Olympics later this year. Team USA is looking to secure their fifth consecutive gold medal, having won every Olympic tournament since 2008.

Mitchell’s performance in Paris saw him score a season-high 45 points. He also became the only Cav since LeBron to have 45 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in a single game. “I think Donovan came out ready for the moment. We talked about beforehand how special this game was to be a part of, what it means for the NBA to select you to come over here and represent the league and the game of basketball on a worldwide stage, and I thought Donovan was phenomenal at giving the audience and us what they came to see and what we needed to go and win the game,” head coach Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.

Joel Embiid Declares For Team USA

The list of players declaring interest in playing for Team USA is continuing to grow. In October, Joel Embiid formally announced that he will be fighting for a place on the American Olympic basketball team. Embiid has been a major target of Team USA in the run-up to the Paris Games. However, the reigning NBA MVP had taken his time choosing between his dual nationalities of American and French. However, Embiid opted for Team USA after a meeting with executive director Grant Hill in Colorado this week.

Sources told ESPN that Embiid was inspired by the litany of former stars who have suited up for Team USA. Furthermore, Embiid wanted to win a gold medal in front of his son Arthur, who was born an American citizen in 2020. “It’s exciting for USA Basketball that Joel Embiid wants to represent the United States. Joel and I have had several conversations about his goals and I’m looking forward to continuing that dialogue knowing that one of those goals is to represent USA Basketball next summer in Paris,” Grant Hill said in a statement.
