In a commanding second-half performance, the Cleveland Cavaliers surged past the Boston Celtics with a decisive 118-94 victory, knotting the series at 1-1.
Donovan Mitchell emerged as the catalyst for Cleveland, erupting for 23 of his 29 points after halftime, ultimately leading his team to victory with a game-high plus-38 rating in just 39 minutes of play.
Mitchell spearheaded a balanced scoring effort for the Cavs, with six players reaching double figures. Evan Mobley delivered a Playoff career-high performance, contributing 21 points, ten rebounds, five assists, and two blocks, while Caris LeVert added another 21 points to the mix. The trio combined for an impressive 71 points, overwhelming the Celtics’ defense.
Despite a valiant effort from Jayson Tatum, who led the Celtics with 25 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, Boston struggled to find their rhythm beyond the arc. After sinking 18 three-pointers in their Game 1 victory, the Celtics managed just eight in Game 2, marking only the fourth single-digit three-pointer game for Boston this season and their first in the Playoffs.

After a historic night with the Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell expressed a desire to link up with another team legend this summer. “I’d love to come back and play in the Olympics. This city is a very electric basketball city,” Mitchell said after scoring 45 points against the Nets in Paris. He also became the only Cav since LeBron to have 45 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in a single game. “I think Donovan came out ready for the moment. We talked about beforehand how special this game was to be a part of, what it means for the NBA to select you to come over here and represent the league and the game of basketball on a worldwide stage, and I thought Donovan was phenomenal at giving the audience and us what they came to see and what we needed to go and win the game,” head coach Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.
The list of players declaring interest in playing for Team USA is continuing to grow. In October, Joel Embiid formally announced that he will be fighting for a place on the American Olympic basketball team. Embiid has been a major target of Team USA in the run-up to the Paris Games. However, the reigning NBA MVP had taken his time choosing between his dual nationalities of American and French. However, Embiid opted for Team USA after a meeting with executive director Grant Hill in Colorado this week.
Sources told ESPN that Embiid was inspired by the litany of former stars who have suited up for Team USA. Furthermore, Embiid wanted to win a gold medal in front of his son Arthur, who was born an American citizen in 2020. “It’s exciting for USA Basketball that Joel Embiid wants to represent the United States. Joel and I have had several conversations about his goals and I’m looking forward to continuing that dialogue knowing that one of those goals is to represent USA Basketball next summer in Paris,” Grant Hill said in a statement.
The Louisville Cardinals had a big-time showdown with the 10th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish this past Saturday (October 7). Louisville’s program is having a bit of a resurgence as they were coming into that contest undefeated and ranked as the 25th-best team in the country. They wound up taking down the visitors, 33-20, staying unbeaten at 6-0. It is another monumental win for the school and two of the brightest talents from the state were in attendance. Louisville-born rapper Jack Harlow, and Cardinal alum, Donovan Mitchell, were repping their squad.

According to ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers were issued tests for performance-enhancing drugs. Mitchell joked about it online.

Donovan Mitchell Jersey Retirement
During the interview with Spears, Mitchell was asked about having his jersey retired by the Jazz. Mitchell was quick to say he doesn’t deserve it. After just five years with the team, Donovan Mitchell acknowledges he simply didn’t achieve enough.
“I don’t think I did enough,” Mitchell said. “I hold myself to a high standard. Now, other people may feel that it should. I’d be happy and forever grateful, honored and blessed for sure for that to happen. But I don’t think I’ve done enough in five years to have my jersey up there with Karl [Malone], John [Stockton], Pistol Pete [Maravich] and Darrell Griffith. I got a long way in my career to go to continue to be better.”

Recently, Mitchell spoke to Marc J. Spears of Andscape about his transition from Utah to Cleveland. During this conversation, Mitchell was open and honest about how Jazz fans were exhausting to deal with. “It’s no secret there’s a lot of stuff that I dealt with being in Utah off the floor,” Mitchell said. “If I’m being honest with you, I never really said this, but it was draining. It was just draining on my energy just because you can’t sit in your room and cheer for me and then do all these different things. I’m not saying specifically every fan, but I just feel like it was a lot of things. A [Utah] state senator [Stuart Adams] saying I need to get educated on my own Black history. Seeing Black kids getting bullied because of their skin color. Seeing a little girl [Isabella Tichenor] hang herself because she’s being bullied.
“Man, it was just one thing after another. And I will say, it’s not the only place it happens. But for me, I’m continuing to be an advocate for [racial equality] and to receive the amount of pushback I got over the years, it was a lot.”

LeBron Impressed By Mitchell
The star of the Cavaliers last night was clearly Donovan Mitchell. The newly-acquired star dropped a total of 43 points, which ultimately spoiled the homecoming. It was a tough match for the Lakers, and consequently, James took notice of the young star.
When asked about Mitchell after the game, LeBron had nothing but praise for the young star. Overall, James definitely kept his answer short, but he made sure to pay respect. “He’s Mitchell,” James said. “He’s a special kid.”
LeBron James and the Lakers are now 10-13 this season with the loss. The Lakers do seem to be on a solid trajectory right now, however, it is not going to be easy. Anthony Davis and James will not play tonight as the Lakers take on the Toronto Raptors. Overall, it is a bad predicament, although it is one the Lakers have experienced all too often this season.
