#BHM|Today In Hip Hop History: Larry Davis Killed In Shawangunk Prison 15 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 02 20 at 8.41.43 AM

Some say he was 50 Cent before 50 Cent. Some called him “the Robin Hood of The Ghetto”, while the establishment dubbed him “the crack city terminator.” In the hood, his solution is considered the only possible answer to a continuous epidemic of police brutality. Some of your favorite rappers from French Montana to Lloyd Banks to Jay-Z have name-dropped him on their tracks and BET felt he was so important to American culture that their American Gangster series had to open with him, but only an educated few know why the name Larry Davis continues to ring bells more than three decades after that fateful night in November of ’86.

On February 20, 2008, Adam Abdul Hakeem aka Larry Davis, was stabbed to death in Shawangunk State Prison in New York by a fellow inmate after serving 23 years for an illegal weapons charge. Most would say that people die in American prisons daily, so what’s the big deal about another dead prisoner? Well, it must first be explained why Mr. Davis was in prison for so long on a mere gun charge in the first place.

As he said on camera after his capture in 1986, “the police gave me the guns!”, that Davis was finally charged with after being acquitted for shooting 6 NYPD officers. The then 21-year-old BX native’s defense was that he shot the officers in self-defense. Davis exposed that he sold drugs for these Bronx precinct officers, claiming that they wanted to kill him because of what he knew about the drug operation within the department and a Bronx jury believed him. This case was the first and very possibly the only time in American history that a civilian was cleared of all charges in the shooting of a police officer.

The NYPD and then-Mayor Edward Koch were outraged at the outcome. After Larry’s death, the former Mayor Koch was quoted as saying, “The prison system did what the criminal justice system could not.” It’s safe to say that with the endless accusations against the NYPD and other police departments around the country for brutality against Black and brown people, the sentiment of sympathy for Larry Davis has been met with fierce opposition.

With the recent killings of Black youth by police and civilians becoming the norm, the question in the urban community is whether or not Larry Davis’ solution to police brutality is the only option left. With normal citizens being given the option to shoot first and ask questions later when it comes to Black youth and the prison industrial complex as the penalty for defending yourself, the bare truth is that it has become the only option to some. With landmark cases from Emmitt Till to Botham Jean, history reveals that people such as Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey, and even Larry Davis will always be heroes. We’ve heard Larry’s name come from the mouths of everyone from ATCQ to Jay-Z.

Check out Larry’s story on Troy Reed’s Street Stories Larry Davis: A Routine Typical Hit, BET’s American Gangster series and is also rumored to be in the hands of several filmmakers, which could possibly spawn the story on the silver screen.

Uncle Murda Responds To Trick Daddy Calling Him A Clown For Annual ‘Rap Up’

Screen Shot 2023 02 19 at 12.02.06 PM

Rapper Trick Daddy had some harsh words for Brooklyn rapper Uncle Murda about his annual “Rap Up” tracks. Trick took a shot at Murda for a line he said about him in his Rap-Up 2021. He dubbed Murda a clown for consciously attempting to go viral. Murda responded by reposting Trick’s statement adding Trick would be a part of next year’s Rap Up.

On his new episode of his cooking show ‘I Got My Pots’ the Miami rapper shared,  “Viral is something that you do accidentally. Anybody that tries to go viral, you are considered, to me, as a clown. You’re a joke. You’re a fool. You’re a gimmick. You’re a fraud. You catfish. Viral is something that is supposed to happen accidentally unless you’re a content creator, unless you’re an actor, unless you a clown that do magic tricks.”

He then turned his attention to the G-Unit rapper, calling him “the #1 clown for the last five years.” The Miami native went into a rant about how the 42-year-old observes the difficult things people go through, makes note of them, and puts those events into songs because he “got nothing else to do.”

Uncle Murda’s lines aimed at Trick Daddy were in response to Trick’s comments about Beyoncé’s inability to sing. “Trick Daddy said Beyoncé can’t sing, that ni**a bugged / He a coke head that’s why we tell kids say no to drugs,” Murda rapped around the five-minute mark.

Uncle Murda reposted Trick Daddy’s statement and added that Trick would be the intro for Rap-Up 2023.

Uncle Murda takes a stab at Trick around the 5:00 mark.

Singer Pink Rank’s ‘Lady Marmalade’ Her Least Favorite Video: It Wasn’t Fun To Make, Kim Was Nice

Screen Shot 2023 02 19 at 10.09.53 AM

Singer, Pink ranked her 12 favorite music videos for BuzzFeed UK and placed “Lady Marmalade” featuring Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim and Mýa last. When asked why, she said, “It wasn’t very fun to make. I’m all about fun and it was like, a lot of fuss, and there were some personalities…Kim and Mýa were nice.”

Screen Shot 2023 02 19 at 10.08.58 AM

She added, “I guess it is iconic, but I remember I kept crying because my skin didn’t like the makeup. It was just…There was some annoying things happening that day.”

Pink has previously addressed past tensions with Christina that erupted over the recording of “Lady Marmalade.” In a 2009 VH1 Behind the Music special, Pink said, “[Record executive] Ron Fair walked in. He didn’t say hi to any of us and said, ‘What’s the high part? What’s the most singing part? Christina’s going to take that part.’”

Pink continued, “I stood up, and I said, ‘Hi. How are you? So nice of you to introduce yourself. I’m Pink. She will not be taking that part. I think that’s what the f–king meeting’s about.’ “
The two singers eventually put their differences aside and even worked together again. In 2017, Pink tweeted, “I [love] Xtina, we’ve made amends,” and also said on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that she and Christina made up while filming The Voice the previous year.

Pink also told host Andy Cohen that their feud once turned physical, saying Christina once swung on her at a club and that it was “hilarious.” In 2019, during her own appearance on WWHL, the “What a Girl Wants” singer responded to the accusation.

“Look at her and look at me,” she told Andy. “I wouldn’t swing on her. She’s like, she’s like, you know, she can beat my ass. Are you kidding me? She could really beat my ass then.”

Christina also spoke about the origin of their feud. “I know she had some, you know, feelings or whatever about how the recording of ‘Lady Marmalade’ went down and all that,” she said, “and I know the actual video, she intimidated me, because she was a little heckling me in the audience, a little bit behind the director and I was like, ‘Oh, what’s going on?’”

Christina continued, “That’s what she did back then. But she’s like, you know, she’s a different person now—she’s a mom, she’s like, she’s cool.”

The Harlem rapper shared:

What a fucking ride man!! Right now I don’t have the strength to put into words to express what my mom means to me, and I’d have to right a book and maybe I will.

In 2007 my mom had a stroke leaving her partially paralyzed on her left side and a speech impediment, but if you followed her or was her friend on social media you would never know any of that. She was witty, funny, intelligent, sarcastic and out spoken. People would say “cam I know you’re writing ya moms captions” and I wasn’t. I would see my moms captions and say “where are you learning this?” (Lingo) she’s tell me “be easy lil homie” lol

So I’m so sad to inform you guys of her passing. I wasn’t going to share this because I’m in a lot of pain and Didnt think it was anyones business, But thinking about it, I really wanted to thank you all for making my moms days and nights for the last decade or so. Social media was her go to for, entertainment, news, general gossip etc. She would send me anything she thought I should know, about me or not, good or bad. She also had friends on here she fight me about. If I had a show anywhere (Boston, cali, texas etc) and she’d say “yo my friend is gonna be at the show get him/her in!” And I’d say “mom you don’t know these people” she’d say “yes I do that’s my friend” (me) “you never even met them” (her) “ I SAID GET THEM IN!!!” Lol and I would.

She wanted to know a couple months ago why she wasn’t verified, she said “I need that blue check yo” and my pr person @pqchanel
made that happen (thank you for that)
She wasn’t doing well on my bday that just past, and when I walked in her room (in the hospital) she was on IG saying “everyone wants to know what’s up with me cause I didn’t post for your bday” I said do you want me to help you make one? She was like “nah”. She wouldn’t want anybody else posting for her. She felt that like having a ghost writer I guess

So this message is really for y’all guys (her social media friends) thank you all for liking, loving and appreciating my mom.

My biggest supporter, best friend and mom

Author Karrine ‘Superhead’ Steffans Reveals Baby Bump

Karrine 1

Last year, the author formerly known as Karrine Steffans revealed she was in another relationship with a celebrity figure. Now going by the moniker Elisabeth Ovesen, the best-selling author known for sharing her sexual interactions with A-list celebs, accused celebrity chef Kwame Onwuachi of ghosting her after allegedly getting her pregnant.

After a series of back and forths with his attorneys, trips to New York to resolve their issues, Ovesen recently posted a photo of her protruding baby bump to her Instagram account with an eerie caption.

She wrote:

When one door closes … am I right?

I’ve stepped away from finishing my first novel to work on a series bible for an HBO-granted project. It’s been years since I’ve written a bible and I forgot how much fun it is! I’ll get back to the novel next month.
.
My creative agency @ovesen_co is focused on our biggest client since opening for business last summer. An HBCU client so big, our small company can’t take on another! That’ll change as we grow, but it’s also nice to cater to just one client. Right now, we’re working on fulfilling all their internal and front-facing copy needs. Oh! And I’ve pushed back hiring until the summer when the budget opens up.
.
I’ve been busy moving, as well. When I lived in New Jersey (2020-2021) there was so much snow! I was really looking forward to snow in New York City during the 2022-2023 winter season, but alas, all we got was rain and some flurries. The good news is that the weather made being bicoastal easier this year.
.
US book and magazine publishing only exists in New York. So, I’ve always gone back and forth between NY and LA with specific goals in mind. This year, I’ve set my sights on something new and exciting. My first novel, yes, but something more. And I’m getting closer.
.
As for me, I’m fucking great. Be back soon.

DPG Member Kurupt Drops New Visual “Take Me Away”

Screen Shot 2023 02 17 at 11.49.25 PM

Kurupt stunts through Las Vegas in his finest gear and brand-new whip in the new video for “Take Me Away,” his solo single off his new collaborative album with C-Mob as the duo GOTTI MOB.

The visuals are directed by Westlyfe Visual, who follows the living rap legend’s exploits through the city of sin. But rather than hit up some flashy party or spend all night enjoying the best the strip has to offer, Kurupt is on his king sh*t here. He enjoys a laid-back ride through the city in a slick Maybach before ultimately reaching his destination — a hotel to pick up his favorite lady. It’s a fittingly chill scenario for the laid-back, low-key funky track, which would fit right in on one of his own solo albums.

This is the sixth video from the duo’s collaborative album, don’t be stupid, and it follows the recently released cinematic visuals for C-Mob’s solo cut, “Wanna Be a Ho.”

Check out the visuals for “Take Me Away” and head over to your preferred platform to stream the duo’s collab LP, don’t be stupid, out now via Penagon Records/GOTTI MOB in partnership with Compound Interest. You can also buy the album on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital download via GOTTIMOB.com, where you can purchase GOTTI MOB merchandise as well.

[WATCH] Trick Daddy Speaks On Uncle Murda’s Annual “Rap Up”: You’re A Clown

Screen Shot 2023 02 17 at 11.45.51 PM

On the most recent episode of his podcast I Got My Pots, Miami Hip Hop legend Trick Daddy spoke very openly about Uncle Murda and his yearly “Rap Up” tracks, where he “respectfully disrespects” rappers and celebs who made the headlines from the past year.

13:40 into the episode, Trick Daddy said that going viral is for social media influencers and clowns before saying that the Brooklyn rapper is “the number one clown.” Trick then slammed all of Murda’s Rap-Ups, saying, “you ain’t got nothing else better to do. That’s clown s**t, boy.”

TD said he wasn’t even going to bring up Murda and his Rap Up tracks, but recalled being one of his targets on one of the year-ending tracks that made Murda declare, “I’m a part of the holidays like Mariah”.

Dame Dash Cleared In Sexual Assault Lawsuit, Ordered To Pay Accuser $30K

Screen Shot 2023 02 17 at 10.55.21 PM

According to several conformed reports, Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Dame Dash has been cleared in a sexual assault lawsuit from 2019, but the music mogul was still ordered to pay the plaintiff $30,000 due to a concurrent defamation lawsuit against Dash.

In 2019, a photographer named Monique Bunn filed a lawsuit against Dash after she alleged that he touched her inappropriately during an overnight stay at Dash’s residence to complete a video shoot. Not long after the accusations were made public, Dash responded on social media, claiming that Bunn financially took advantage of him by committing credit card fraud, to which Bunn added the defamation of character complaint to the suit.

After the four day trial, it was ruled by a jury that Dash did not sexually assault Bunn, but she was was awarded $30K for the defamation of character, which can only be overturned by a federal appeals court.

[WATCH] Off-Duty Female Officer Shoots Man Following Warning

cop

The fatal shooting video of 39-year-old Leevon Smith by an off-duty officer was released by COPA Chicago as part of an ongoing investigation. In the shocking footage, Smith is seen fighting with a group of men who accused him of robbing someone in the 1300 block of West 90th Street.

The off-duty officer emerged from her apartment building to break up the fight. One of the men identified her as “the po-lice. The officer calmly spoke with the men and even stood between the angry men and Smith.

After the group walked away, the officer patiently listened to Smith as he told his side of the story. When she turned to go back inside the building, Smith grabbed her.

“I’ll Kill you,” the officer said, as the two struggled. “You got to kill me then,” Smith told her.

“Watch this,” she said, as she pulled out a gun and fired a shot.

“Oh, sh*t!” Smith yelled. “I’m sorry!”

“I told you I’d kill you. I told your dumb ass I’d kill you,” she said, as another gunshot rang out.

“You got me! You got me!” Smith told the officer as the two struggled off camera.

“I told your dumb ass I’d kill you,” the officer said, as she fired a third shot.

“You got me for real,” Smith told her. “Baby, I’m sorry. I’m sorry… I don’t want to die!”

The officer yelled for someone to call 911.

“Call the police. I just shot somebody,” she yelled.

Smith suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and hand. He was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead on Jan. 20.

The officer told responding cops that the shooting happened when Smith reached for her gun.

Smith’s family filed a $10 million lawsuit against the city on Feb. 3, citing “excessive and violent physical force.”

The officer was not named in the lawsuit. She joined the police force last June.
