Today In Hip Hop History: Big Daddy Kane Dropped His Third Album ‘A Taste Of Chocolate’ 33 Years Ago

On this date in 1990, King Asiatic Nobody’s Equal dropped his third album A Taste Of Chocolate on the Cold Chillin/Warner Bros. imprint.

As Kane’s most commercial-friendly, full-length studio project, the streets turned its back on Kane when this was released, crying foul because of its crossover sound and features with R&B artists, which was an absolute no-no for Hip Hop artists in 1990. Let’s not forget his nude photoshoot with Madonna that made him even less desirable. How times have changed.

Songs like “Mr. Pitiful” were descriptive of how fan and the general public received BDK after his newfound fame. Songs like “Cause I can Do It Right” continued to solidify his ladies-man persona, while “Put Your Weight On It” and “Big Daddy Kane vs. Dolemite” were singles where Kane attempted to display that his verbal abilities were still intact.

A Taste Of Chocolate reached No. 10 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart and No. 37 on the Billboard 200 chart, but never got the approval of the streets.

Salute to Kane for continuing to bless the culture with his music and forever be a part of Hip Hop history!

Today in Hip-Hop History: Run-D.M.C.’s Jam Master Jay Was Shot And Killed In His Queens Studio 21 Years Ago

On this date in 2002, the illustrious DJ of the legendary Run-D.M.C. was gunned down in a studio in his hometown of Hollis, Queens. He was 37 years old.

An unknown person fatally shot Mizell in a recording studio on Merrick Blvd. in Jamaica, Queens. The other person in the room, 25-year-old Urieco Rincon, was shot in the ankle but survived.

In 2003, Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, a convicted drug dealer and longtime friend of Murder Inc. heads Irv and Chris Gotti, was investigated for killing Mizell because the DJ defied an industry blacklist of then upcoming rapper 50 Cent that was imposed because of “Ghetto Qu’ran”, a song 50 Cent wrote about Queens drug kingpins, including McGriff’s drug history.

In April 2007, federal prosecutors named Ronald “Tenad” Washington as an accomplice in the murder. Washington also is a suspect in the 1995 murder of Randy “Stretch” Walker, a former close associate of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, who was also murdered. According to court papers filed by the prosecution, Washington pointed his gun at those present in the studio, ordered them to get on the ground and provided cover for his associate to shoot and kill Jason Mizell, however, he was never convicted and no new suspects have been named.

This murder remains unsolved, but former Hip Hop cop Derrick Parker says he knows who killed Jam Master Jay and the case will be solved in the near future.

This senseless killing was one of many unsolved murders in the Hip Hop community, which has been plagued by gun violence. Let’s hope that this somber moment in Hip Hop history will prompt our youth to put the guns down.

Dwight Howard Releases Statement Following Recent Allegations

Dwight Howard has had one heck of a week.

Howard has denied accusations by a Georgia man who says he was sexually assaulted by the former NBA star and another person.

Stephen Harper filed a state civil lawsuit against Howard in July, alleging assault and battery, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Now Howard and his team have released an official statement about his recent allegations:

This is a civil case that was made public for profit. In this case, the accuser is solely suing Dwight Howard and has refrained from suing the other party in which he claims to be involved. It is important to know that these matters were NEVER about sexual assault. This was merely about money and greed. Such individuals, have made continuous attempts to elicit payment from Dwight. This has resulted in intimidation of not only Dwight, his family and friends have also been targeted as well.

The accuser took to social media, only after being ignored by Howard.

Over the duration of several years the accuser has set out to hire attorneys whom either declined the case or dropped the case after payment from Dwight was denied.

Dwight hopes that people spend as much time covering his innocence, his numerous ventures to improve the lives of people through his global initiatives, his efforts to improve the quality of life of all people, despite race, creed, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and others.

Through efforts like his 750 acre farm, his community outreach, and his 18yr track record of global philanthropy, Dwight looks forward to fans, viewers and spectators alike to focus their time and energy on what matters, which are the positive endeavors that Dwight is actively working on for community, with negativity as the least important focus.

In the past, people have tried to take advantage of Dwight, by attempting to use blackmail for money by fabricating stories and taking advantage of his kind nature.

By taking immediate action, Dwight’s legal team is aggressively pursuing anyone who is online or otherwise attempting to go after his name with false claims. Dwight strongly empathizes with any real cases of sexual assault and believes that fabricated stories as such make it difficult for the real victims of true crimes to come forth.

Assault has never been an element in Dwight’s character and he has never sexually assaulted ANYONE. The insensitivity of the individuals making such claims to damage his reputation is unfortunate. However, Howard plans to continue to live his life with grace and not let such false claims ruin his joy + spirit.

Kodak Black Blasts Latto For Not Clearing His Name In Sexual Favors Accusation

Kodak Black’s Drink Champs appearance yielded a lot of interesting reflections, bombshell statements, and moments of controversy. What might be the most direct and confrontational of them all, though, might just be his new feud with Latto stemming from their collaboration on her 2022 album, 777. Moreover, for those unaware, she had confessed that it was difficult to get an artist (that she kept anonymous) on the album because they wanted sexual favors in order to clear it. Then, fans online assumed that the femcee was talking about Yak, and he just came through with another response to the whole ordeal. According to him, Latto failed to clear his name after Internet accusations went wild, but this brings us no closer to the actual truth.

Basically, the conversation stemmed when N.O.R.E. was doing his typical “this or that” questions to Kodak Black. When asked to pick between Ice Spice and Latto, he sided with the Bronx MC because of the aforementioned situation. Overall, it’s a pretty difficult one to pin down, especially within the “he said, she said” framework that it falls under right now. However, this is far from the first time that Kodak has publicly addressed this issue.

“This whole s**t looked like a damn plot,” Kodak Black expressed during a rant back when Latto beat him out at the 2022 BET Hip-Hop Awards for “Song of the Year.” “Then I look at the ‘gram like what shorty blocked me for? They probably hollerin’ at BET, like don’t give him that s**t. I told [people] weeks ago, ‘Watch, they finna play with me and give it to frappuccino.’” On her end, the Atlanta-based hitmaker used that “frappuccino” title as a brief branding opportunity, clearly showing her unfazed status in the public eye.

Meanwhile, the Broward County rhymer denied that she referred to him with her comments about sexual advances, and made multiple other public statements against her.
