Two weeks ago, conscious rapper Yasiin Bey sparked a wave of discussion when he was quoted claiming that Drake’s music is not representative of true Hip Hop. Now, in a recent video shared on Instagram, Bey seeks to clarify his statement and shed light on his perspective.
In the video, Yasiin Bey begins by emphasizing that his comments about Drake’s music were not intended as an attack or a form of disrespect. Instead, he asserts that as an artist and a member of the Hip Hop community, he is entitled to his opinion and to engage in constructive critique.
“I have no hate for Drake,” Bey states firmly. He goes on to explain that he has reached out to Drake directly to express his thoughts, but has yet to receive a response. Despite this, Yasiin Bey extends an open invitation for a face-to-face meeting with Drake, emphasizing his willingness to engage in a respectful dialogue at any time.
Importantly, Bey makes it clear that his critique of Drake’s music does not stem from a place of jealousy or resentment towards the Canadian rapper’s success. “I have no issue with Drake’s success,” he affirms. “I would never try to diminish his talent or his accomplishments.”
Yasiin Bey acknowledges that criticism directed at Drake in the past has often been mean-spirited and unfair, and he makes it clear that he does not wish to contribute to that negative discourse. “I don’t want to be part of that energy,” he states.
However, despite his intentions to offer constructive criticism, Yasiin Bey maintains that Drake is not above critique.
In an interview earlier this month, Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) said of Drake, “Drake is pop to me, in the sense like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song… it feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping. Or shopping with an edge in certain instances… It’s likable.”
In an Instagram Live broadcast yesterday (January 29), he said:
“Drake, if you’d like to speak to me directly, you can at any point. I reached out to [Dave] Chappelle, I actually reached out to you. I DM’d you. You are a very talented MC, but for me, I require more of myself and others than just talent or charm or charisma, particularly in times of urgent crisis. And what I would like to see, in terms of creators or creative people in the world, as it relates to our culture, is for people to connect with us beyond the jukebox or the dance floor.
A fair-weather friend can hardly be called a friend at all. The people who party with you: that’s cool. But will they show up for you when you’re at the triage?”

Yasiin Bey, the rapper formerly known as Mos Def, hit Instagram on Monday to talk about Drake once again. This time, Bey stated he was not attempting to slander or clown The Boy.
After saying he doesn’t hate anyone, Bey revealed, “I have reached out to him, I have no responses yet. I’m not keen to talk about people or to them through a screen, I prefer to talk to people directly.
“The young man is very talented, he’s been able to be very successful with that talent, and I have no issue with his success or anything that he’s been able to achieve as a result of his talent.”
Later in the video, Bey referred to Drake as a “very talented MC” and added that he reached out Dave Chappelle to attempt to get in contact.

Drake is a polarizing figure in the hip-hop community, that goes without saying. That is especially true when it comes to some of his peers. He and Yasiin Bey, formerly Mos Def, were going at it recently after an interview went viral. The legendary New York MC said that Drizzy does not make rap music, but rather stuff you would hear while shopping. In addition, Megan Thee Stallion also sent some strays in her recent mega viral diss track, “HISS,” aimed at his Young Money teammate, Nicki Minaj. Even with all of that hate, plenty still respect him for what he has done for the genre over his decorated career.
One of those who gave him his kudos was New York drill rapper Fivio Foreign. In one of his latest tweets, he said, “Deff gotta give Drake his flowers He took me viral early fr ” Fivio is harkening back to the time they collaborated on Drake’s Dark Lane Demo Tapes record back in 2019. They did so on “Demons” along with Sosa Geek. It turns out that message was sent around the same time that he and The Boy were hanging out in NYC.
Cash Cobain, one of the hottest up-and-comers from the area also popped out with them. They can be seen in the video above chopping it up and having a chill night. Moreover, Drake most likely took an extended visit this past weekend. He and his son Adonis were courtside at the Knicks versus Heat game. Lil Yachty was also clubbing with his close friend.

This is shaping up to be the wildest New Music Friday in a while after Megan Thee Stallion made a triumphant return with her latest song, “Hiss.” She announced the track only a few days out from its January 26 release, and as soon as midnight hit, fans flooded streaming services to hear what the Hottie hitmaker has been working on.
Almost immediately, fans began sharing a few controversial lyrics that they believed targeted people who didn’t have nice things to say about Megan in the past. Now, the femcee didn’t necessarily drop any names. However, a flurry of conversation was immediate, with social media users taking to platforms with their guesses. Fans broke down some references and concluded there were several that Megan may have been discussing on “Hiss.” This morning, during a call with The Breakfast Club, the Traumazine rapper was asked about her new track.
Charlamagne Tha God flatly questioned Megan if she outwardly said any of her foes’ names on the single. After a slight pause, she replied, “Hit dogs holler.” And boy, have they ever been on X (formerly Twitter), where Nicki Minaj and the Barbz haven’t stopped firing off nasty messages and liking anti-Megan posts. However, she isn’t the only one who the public believes Megan Thee Stallion was letting off steam about, so let’s take a look at a few bars that seem to target the industry elite who have openly spoken out against the Texas titan in the past.
It hasn’t even been a full 24 hours since Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss” hit airwaves and the Queen rapper has been unleashing. On the track, Megan raps: “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, these hoe’s mad at Megan’s Law.” This is referring to a law enacted after the murder of seven-year-old Megan Kanka in 1994 by a sex offender who lived in her neighborhood. Megan’s Law was created to legally require sex offenders to register with their local law enforcement or government.
Nicki Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty has been in and out of headlines for years regarding the 1990s cases where he served time. Also in 1994, a 16-year-old Jennifer Hough accused Petty, who was the same age, of raping her at knifepoint. He denied the allegations but later entered a guilty plea to an attempted rape charge. Petty would serve over four years in prison and must register as a sex offender.
Minaj hasn’t spoken about the controversy at length, especially considering there are still legal issues tied to the incident. However, the raptress icon didn’t waste a moment making fun of Megan The Stallion online after hearing “Hiss.” Nicki has mocked Megan being shot and has been liking posts chastising Megan and her case with Tory Lanez, among highlighting other controversies.
Minaj’s longtime Young Money bestie Drake may have also caught an arrow on “Hiss.” Megan spits, “These n*ggas hate on BBLs and be walkin’ ’round with the same scars (Ah)/ Real curvy, no edgin’, n*ggas fight to get in my section (My section).” There have long been rumors that Drake didn’t gain his figure in the gym, but under the knife. Joe Budden infamously teased years ago that Drizzy underwent cosmetic surgery to get his body right and tight.
Further, Drake’s friendship and support of Tory Lanez through the latter’s trial caused a stir. Then, on his Her Loss, 21 Savage-assisted track “Circo Loco,” Drake was accused of targeting Megan unprovoked with the bars: “This b*tch lie ’bout gettin’ shots, but she still a stallion.” This helped continue the social media vitriol against Megan, most notably from DJ Akademiks, as she faced allegations of lying about being shot by Lanez. A jury sided with the prosecution and sentenced Lanez to 10 years in prison. He, and his supporters, continue to maintain his innocence.
Pardison Fontaine

The romance between Megan Thee Stallion and Pardison Fontaine may be a thing of the past, but fans believe she hinted at her ex on “Hiss.” When the pair emerged, they couldn’t get enough of showing off their love on red carpets and at events. Fontaine was present throughout Megan’s Tory Lanez ordeal and even defended his then-lady against the Chixtape hitmaker.
However, like many high-profile romances often do, things ended quietly between Pardison and Megan. Then, the latter dropped “Cobra,” a track where she insinuated a lover cheated on her in their shared bed. She never said any of the lyrics were about Fontaine, but he took things personally and retaliated with a song of his own. On “Hiss,” fans think Megan was taking a verbal shot at her ex when she said, “He can’t move on, can’t let it go (Let it go)/ he hooked, nose full of that Tina Snow.” She stated elsewhere, “Say he a player, but he in his feelings (What?)/Bet I won’t give up the p*ssy again/ Sh*t, should’ve gave it to his friend (Ayy).“

“Diss”—ahem—”Hiss” wouldn’t be complete without a reference to Tory Lanez. For years, Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion were engaged in a rift that had a chokehold on Hip Hop. Fans were divided over Megan testifying that Lanez shot her in the foot in July 2020 following a Hollywood Hills party at Kylie Jenner’s home. Although Megan did not initially name her assailant, Lanez took to the internet with posts that ignited the Southern star.
Megan took to Instagram Live to directly accuse Lanez of shooting her in the foot. This caused a massive divide, and soon, Thee Stallion found herself on the receiving end of internet hate as Lanez continued to deny culpability. Further, Lanez before the trial and his subsequent sentencing, Lanez repeatedly targeted Megan in social media posts. Moreover, he antagonized Megan with a music video of him butchering horse feet. His famous friends followed suit, with jokes about being shot and allegations that Megan lied about the incident.
Megan Thee Stallion seeming references Lanez’s incarceration on “Hiss,” but doesn’t deliver a message to him. Instead, she had a few words in the outro for his supporters who continued to harass her. Some think this one was also for Akademiks. “Say, b*tch-ass n*gga, don’t type me nothin’ else, don’t write me nothin’ else / Download JPay since y’all n*ggas got so much to say / Or schedule a conjugal visit or somethin’, hahaha / D*ck ridin’-ass n*ggas.”
Earlier this year a pretty unpredictable beef emerged. Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def was asked a somewhat loaded question about Drake during an appearance on a podcast. But his answer didn’t necessarily sit right with people. He claimed that the music Drake makes is closer to pop than actual rap. He justified the claim by saying that it’s the kind of music you hear while shopping. The comments weren’t exactly hateful towards Drake, but they still rubbed a lot of his fans and even some other rappers the wrong way.
NLE Choppa was one of the first high-profile rappers to come to Drake’s defense. That was before Drizzy himself responded, first with a clip from an old Method Man interview discussing rap being about the culture. He doubled down on his response a few days later when he took to his Instagram story to call Bey a “crackhead.” Bey caught even more flack later when he performed during a Paris Fashion Week show. Clips of his performance, which predominately featured him singing instead of rapping, were widely criticized online. Now Common is weighing in on the beef and taking Drake’s side. When discussing Drake’s genre, Common referenced back to the rapper’s early days. “To me, I think Drake comes from Hip Hop. When I first heard him rhyming, I was like, ‘Yo, this dude rhyming.’ And if he goes out and makes songs that are popular, then that’s what it is. He’s still an MC,” he explains.
“The dude is an incredible songwriter, he’s an incredible artist. You can’t touch that many people, for as long a time as he’s been doing. This man has touched different aspects of culture and been able to continue to do it. You gotta have some respect and know that this dude is a very talented artist” Common concluded. 21 Savage is riding high after the release of his new album american dream. The project became an instant smash rising to the top of the Billboard 200 in its very first week. The album isn’t going anywhere either as it’s projected to spend a second week at the very top spot. It also debuted two songs in the top 10 of the Hot 100, “redrum” and “nee-nah” with Travis Scott and Metro Boomin. “redrum” landed in the top 5 and is expected to remain in the top 10 in its second week.
In a sort of victory lap for the new album, Savage appeared on Shannon Sharpe’s show Club Shay Shay. The show was already a point of controversy earlier this year when Katt Williams appeared. He used it as a platform to deliver some truly unhinged stories that quickly went viral. By comparison, 21 is much more focused but that doesn’t mean he didn’t make some viral waves of his own. Most recently fans are discussing his comments about being friends with Drake. When Sharpe tries to bring up the fact that people don’t like the For All The Dogs rapper for inexplicable reasons, Savage defends him. “I don’t know. I f*ck with Drake though. Elsewhere in the interview Savage makes other attention grabbing comments. One in particular that had fans debating is a comment about parents. He claims that having broke parents is better than having rich ones. While it’s easy to understand what he’s saying fans online debated the claim for days following the release of the interview.
He also told a particularly harrowing version of his story of getting shot on his 21st birthday. He’s still an MC… The dude is an incredible songwriter, he’s an incredible artist… You gotta have some respect and know that this dude is a very talented artist.”
After the host’s joked that Yasiin’s take was “very on-brand for him,” Common was also very complimentary to his rapper-turned-actor, saying, “He has poetry within his rap. He can style on anything. He can do a lot.”
Bey set of days of intense debate within the hip-hop world when he said during an interview, “Drake is pop to me, in the sense like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song… it feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping.” While some hip-hop heads (mostly those who likely stopped listening to new rap music sometime in 2005) agreed, others felt that the take was unfair to Drake or idealized hip-hop as an artform, since early rappers were equally as materialistic in their music.
Meanwhile, Drake himself pointed out that he could never NOT be hip-hop, using an old Method Man quote as an example and pointing out the hypocrisy inherent in Bey’s comments as someone who once fought for the expansion of artistic expression in hip-hop. “What umi say again?” he wrote, nodding to Bey’s 1999 single “Umi Says,” in which Bey sings, “My Umi said shine your light on the world / Shine your light for the world to see.”
Of course, there’s also Lil Wayne’s take, which simplified all Drake hate down to one simple reason.
