Days ahead of the 2024 Olympics Closing Ceremony yesterday (August 11), there were reports of who would be performing (beyond previously announced acts), and the list included Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Well, the reports ended up being true, as the world learned last night.

The festivities kicked off at Stade de France, and among the performers there was Phoenix, who called upon a number of guests for their set, including Kavinsky, VannDa, Air, and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig. Later, HER performed the United States National Anthem.

Then, there was a series of performances from Long Beach, California, which were pre-taped on August 10. There, Snoop busted out a setlist featuring (per setlist.fm) “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “The Next Episode” alongside Dr. Dre, “Gin And Juice,” and “What’s My Name” (check out a video here).

At another point, RHCP hit the beach for “Can’t Stop” and “Eddie” (video), while Eilish (with Finneas, of course) played “Birds Of A Feather” and “The Greatest” (video).

It was a good showing from the United States, and that was the case for the actual Olympic events themselves. By the time all the medals had been handed out, the US had secured the most with 126 in total while tying with China for the most gold medals, with 40.

Dr Dre Details Hilarious Blind Double Date With Snoop Dogg Gone Wrong

Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg are the most iconic duo in hip-hop history. Granted, they are an official duo like Outkast or Mobb Deep, but their impact is undeniable. They codified gangsta rap in the mainstream, and have mentored generations of West Coast artists. Dre and Snoop are mythic figures at this point. That’s what makes stories about their early days so enthralling. It’s nice to hear about instances in which they were more relatable, less G’d out. Dr Dre provided fans with one such story during a recent interview.

The duo sat down with Capital Xtra on June 19 to take about their three decade friendship. Snoop Dogg detailed his reverence for Dr Dre, dubbing him his “older brother.” He also credited the producer for his business acumen, and sound financial advice over the years. “I just love being with him in the studio and real life,” Snoop explained. Dr Dre was appreciative, but he took the interview in a more comedic light. He decided to recount a story in which him and Snoop went on a blind double date. Dre recalls being thrilled when they went to pick up their dates. That was, until he realized the woman he was entranced by was actually Snoop’s girl.

Dr Dre Recorded A Classic The Day After The Double Date

“I thought it was mine and it wasn’t,” Dr Dre jokingly recalled. “Snoop pushed me out the way like, ‘Nah, Cuz, that’s me.’ When I turned that corner and saw mine, I was really disappointed.” To make the whole thing worse, the duo had to drive in a rain storm to get there. “We drove for an hour in Hurricane Katrina to get there and I was extremely disappointed,” the producer reiterated. Incredibly, there is a silver lining to the story. While the double date didn’t go as planned for Dr Dre, the producer went into the studio the very next day and recorded “Nothin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.” The 1992 song would become a smash hit and a signature for both him and Snoop.

Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg are close as ever. The two artists are working on the album Missionary, which is said to be a sequel to Snoop’s 1993 debut Doggystyle. Dr Dre will handle production on the album, and has been working on and off with Snoop for the last two years. Snoop Dogg promised that Missionary is going to be worth the wait, as it will showcase a mature side of his musical persona. “[Dr Dre] uses me like a f*cking robot and I love it because I love to be produced,” he told the podcast All the Smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. “I love to be challenged…. [the album is] masterful.”

Eminem Joins Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre For Surprise Performance With LeBron James & Shaq In The Crowd

Eminem is riding the high off of The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), and all his celebrations are a Death Row/Aftermath/Interscope affair. Moreover, he recently popped out for a surprise performance at Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s launch party for their “Gin & Juice” canned cocktail brand in the United Kingdom on Thursday (July 18). None other than Shaq hosted the event, and even LeBron James was in attendance. Marshall Mathers performed “Houdini” and “Forgot About Dre,” whereas Dre and Snoop played cuts like “The Next Episode.” This followed Em’s appearance at a Death Of Slim Shady pop-up in London, at which he kicked it with fans, gave out autographs, and posed next to a fake casket for his alter ego.

As for Eminem’s hip-hop old-heads, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre seemed to enjoy the English city, with the latter comparing it to Compton. “I didn’t know it was that many Black people out here. It felt like the hood,” Snoop Dogg remarked. In an interview with Capital Xtra, they elaborated on their collaborative bond. “It taught me how to be professional, Dr. Dre has always been like a big brother to me,” Tha Doggfather posited. “He’s always had the attitude and the spirit of always looking forward.”

Eminem’s Surprise Performance

“I love that [Snoop Dogg] gives me his trust with his career,” Dr. Dre added. “I’m never going to let my bro down.” All in all, this seemed like a fantastic event and a great celebration about the duo’s upcoming album and Eminem’s latest release. Speaking of which, fans are already breaking down possible interpretations, meanings, and theories behind The Death Of Slim Shady. One is the classic flip of playing the album backwards, and it’s wild to see how many different takes are just as valid and reasonable.

More Moments From London Travels

Meanwhile, another close Eminem family tree member, 50 Cent, recently offered his thoughts on the Detroit legend’s latest full-length. “Yo @eminem s**t is crazy it takes me a while to understand the details of this one [fire emoji],” Fif wrote of the project on Instagram. We can only guess as to what these stars will do for the rest of 2024. Hopefully they keep things just as exciting.

Dr. Dre And Snoop Dogg May Have Teased Eminem’s Upcoming Album Months Ago In A Gin & Juice Cocktail Ad

While Eminem first began teasing his new album, The Death Of Slim Shady, back in April, some fans now think he may have teased it even sooner than that. According to Billboard, some of Em’s most dedicated Stans have apparently discovered clues to the new albums’ release in promos for another Dr. Dre-related product as far back as February.

That’s when Dre and longtime collaborator Snoop Dogg shared the ad for their Gin & Juice canned cocktails, which pays visual homage to Quentin Tarantino’s breakout 1994 film Pulp Fiction. Dressed as the film’s two hitmen, Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, Dre and Snoop dispose of a body in the woods and open a can of Gin & Juice while Snoop smokes a blunt. Fans have determined that the body might have been the titular Slim Shady, as Eminem’s cover for The Death Of Slim Shady features him being zipped into a body bag like the one Snoop and Dre retrieve from the trunk of their car in the commercial.

Of course, all this could just be fans letting their imaginations run wild. After all, it has been nearly four years since Em last released a new album. As it stands, it’s fun to think that there could be a connection, but for now, there’s little concrete evidence that points to any determined cross promotion.

The Death Of Slim Shady is due on 7/12 via Shady/Aftermath/Interscope.

Marsha Ambrosius Enlists Dr Dre For Lush New Album “Casablanco”

Marsha Ambrosius can belt. She generates raw power on a song, and has been able to do for her entire career. The songs and the production haven’t already been up to par, but Ambrosius’ voice demands to be paid attention to. This inconsistency is what makes her new album, Casablanco, such a revelation. The album boasts Dr Dre production that’s lush, incredibly catchy, and crucially, worthy of its singer. Casablanco is only 11 tracks in length, but it’s about as satisfying as a classic R&B can be.

The opening track, “Smoke,” establishes the winning formula of the album. Dr Dre provides a backdrop that’s both sultry and hard-hitting. It’s tailored to Marsha Ambrosius’ sensitivity as a performer, but it has a hip-hop edge that keeps things engaging. The same can be said for standouts “Greedy” and “Thrill Her.” The latter interpolates Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” and spruces it up with arguably the best beat on the album. Saxophone pops in and out, while the hard-hitting drums anchor a sample of Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood.” Ambrosius, charismatic as ever, still manages to keep the spotlight focused firmly on her. The Dr Dre formula falters somewhat towards the end of Casablanco. The flamenco guitar on “Best I Could Find” is a bit overdone, but overall, this is one of the best R&B albums of the year.

Dr. Dre Lit Up “The Pop Out” Alongside Kendrick Lamar With His Snoop Dogg-Assisted Classic, “Still D.R.E.”: Stream

Kendrick Lamar’s “The Pop Out” concert on Juneteenth in Los Angeles held many great moments for the current generation of rap fans, but also plenty of love to the forefathers of the West Coast. Moreover, Dr. Dre popped out to perform his classic Snoop Dogg collab “Still D.R.E.,” and it reinvigorated love for an overplayed hit. Well, the Cali legend certainly proved us wrong, and we’re sure plenty of people have been bumping this classic piano line and crisp percussive pattern today in wake of the show.

In addition, Dr. Dre also graced us to “California Love” by him and Tupac Shakur, and even introduced “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, leading to an absolutely electric moment. But this doesn’t mean that his guest appearance went without scrutiny. Many folks lamented that K.Dot chose to platform a known woman abuser, regardless of the impact of “Still D.R.E.” or that of its artist as a whole. While Dre has a complicated legacy to reckon with and be accountable for, one can’t deny that his blueprint for G-funk and West Coast hip-hop alongside Snoop Dogg and others is worthy of recognition and praise in tandem with the conversation around his personal actions.

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg also have another album on the way, so it looks like the West Coast will stay up. Revisit the music video for their anthem “Still D.R.E.” below, take a look at some standout bars down there too, and let us know what you think of this throwback in the comments section. Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out: The 5 Best Moments

The Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef has been heavy on our minds this year. Perhaps, it’s largely because everyone is being forced to pick a side. Impassioned fans are glued to Instagram and YouTube comments where they attempt to discredit the other artist for one reason or another. Mind you, this battle was only about numbers because one of the participants happened to be the most streamed artist in the world. At its core, it boiled down to the music.

We’re at an interesting crossroads in the music industry where streaming numbers don’t translate to ticket sales. Several reports emerged recently about some of the top streaming artists struggling to sell tour tickets, raising concerns surrounding the authenticity of streaming numbers. Earlier this week, an individual appeared on DJ Akademiks’ stream where he alleged that Anthony Saleh, Kendrick Lamar’s manager, hired him to inflate the number of views on “Not Like Us,” the rapper’s chart-topping song that disses Drake, using bots. Joe Budden stated that he was aware (and doesn’t care) of the alleged bot scandal. Meanwhile, several fans attempted to debunk the claim. But, with Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out – Ken & Friends concert, it became apparent that the hype was far from fabricated.

The incredible event hosted by pgLang and Free Lunch unified the West Coast. Kendrick reunited Black Hippy on stage for the first time in years and shared the stage with dozens of L.A. rappers. While the majority of viewers didn’t get the opportunity to witness history made inside of the Kia Forum in person, we all tuned in from the comfort of our homes to find out exactly what Kendrick Lamar and co. had up their sleeves. So, without further ado, we’re diving into our five favorite moments from last night’s event.

5. Tommy The Clown

If the point of Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out was to honor the legacy of the West Coast, it wouldn’t have been complete without a staple in the city: Tommy The Clown. DJ Hed introduced the pioneer of clowning to the stage where Tommy brought along his dance crew for an electrifying performance.

The Los Angeles-based dancer played a key role in the evolution of hip-hop dance. More importantly, he established a dance crew titled Hip Hop Clowns which offered an outlet for kids in the city. “No gangs, No drugs, Do well in school (grades, attendance, and behavior), and be a role model by living a positive lifestyle at all times” are the rules that Tommy established. Decades later, his legacy as a community leader became as important as his impact on dance. During his performance last night, he empowered the youth and allowed them on one of the biggest stages to get a glimpse of where hard work can lead. It was a perfect performance that underlined the significance of the event; yes, it was a victory lap for Kendrick Lamar but it was also a showcase of the raw talent in Los Angeles.

4. Dr. Dre’s Cameo

Nearly thirteen years ago, Dr. Dre sat in the crowd of the Music Box Theatre in Los Angeles as The Game, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Daz, and Warren G passed the West Coast torch to Kendrick Lamar. It’s a moment that lived on in history together, and felt even more important when they joined the stage at Coachella in 2012 to perform “The Recipe.” However, after over a decade of working together closely, Dr. Dre’s appearance at the Kia Forum for The Pop Out felt like an even more significant milestone in Kendrick Lamar’s career.

Performing “Still D.R.E.” felt appropriate for the venue but the inclusion of “California Love” in the setlist was a direct message to Kendrick’s opponent, who he told, “Give me 2Pac ring back and I might give you a little respect” in a lyric change on “Euphoria” at the beginning of the set. Drake might be flaunting a piece of American history on his finger, but the collective West Coast resentment toward “Taylor Made Freestyle” felt palpable at that moment. So, when Dr. Dre helped introduce “Not Like Us,” it became clear that the West Coast is unified, from the OGs who broke down the doors to the young L.A. artists who are carrying on the tradition.

3. DJ Mustard’s Set – YG, Roddy Ricch, Tyler, The Creator, Steve Lacy, Dom Kennedy & More

DJ Hed and DJ Mustard set the tone for Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out show but the latter truly gave us a history lesson on the last decade-plus of Los Angeles’ sound. Mustard has undoubtedly been an architect evolving the West Coast and his set certainly reflected his impact. Collaborators like YG and Roddy Ricch turned out the Kia Forum with the intensity of hit records like “BPT” and “The Box,” respectively, while understated Los Angeles legends, JasonMartin (F.K.A. Problem) and Dom Kennedy glided through the stage in a cool-and-calm fashion while igniting the crowd with L.A. Pride. However, the versatility of Mustard’s set with the inclusion of Tyler, The Creator, Ty Dolla $ign, and Steve Lacy further embodied the West Coast’s impact outside of California, too.

2. Black Hippy Reunites On Stage

Listen, we’ve basically been left hanging on the possibility of a Black Hippy album. Plus, Kendrick’s departure from Top Dawg Entertainment left little hope of the project ever happening. In the past few years of Kendrick launching pgLang and embarking on a journey outside of the label that he launched his career with, many wondered where exactly he stands with Jay Rock, ScHoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen them together.

For the sake of the evening, Jay Rock, ScHoolboy, and Soulo appeared on stage one-by-one to reunite Black Hippy for the first time in a long time. Though Kendrick performed songs like “Money Tree” with Jay Rock and “Collard Greens” with ScHoolboy Q, it felt a tad disappointing that he limited Ab-Soul’s appearance ad-libs on “6:16 In L.A.” Regardless, it was an important moment, one that we’ve been waiting on for years but what could’ve elevated it even further was if they performed “Vice City,” “Black Lip Bastard,” or even “THat Part (Remix)” together.

1. Unifying L.A.

The most important part of the evening came at the end of the show after Kendrick had already performed “Not Like Us” three times in a row. Yes, it was a spectacular moment to hear the song live for the first time, whether in the venue or at home. However, it became a critical piece to Kendrick’s thesis for the night: bringing Los Angeles together.

When “Not Like Us” first came out, rumors emerged that its infectious production and chorus had practically created an unspoken ceasefire in the city – members of all gangs unified to celebrate a victory on the West Coast. However, it became true as all the performers, hailing from different sections of the city and claiming various sets, emerged on stage together to celebrate the success of the event. From Bloods to Crips, Kendrick stood alongside each as equals, shaking hands as he performed his hit single and grinning from ear-to-ear.

“This shit making me emotional. We been fucked up since Nipsey [Hussle] died. We been fucked up since Kobe [Bryant] died. This is unity at its finest,” Kendrick said on stage as he attempted to gather everyone together for what will certainly be regarded as an iconic photo. “We done lost a lot of homies to this music shit, to this street shit. For all of us to be together on stage, that shit is special. Everybody on this stage got fallen soldiers.”
