Tems Details Her Mental Journey On “Born In The Wild”

Tems rise to the top has been quite rapid. Over the last couple of years, the Lagos, Nigerian genre chameleon has notched some impressive feathers in her cap. Whether it be working with Drake (multiple times) and Future on “WAIT FOR U”, or Wizkid and Justin Bieber on “Essence”, she has really been everywhere. We also cannot forget to mention her contributions to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. But just because she has all of these major collaborations, do not think for one second that her solo career is lackluster. From “Me & U” to “Love Me JeJe”, and “Higher”, the 28-year-old has a loaded catalog, too. The first two singles land on Tems’ debut album, Born in the Wild.

It follows up on a tandem of EPs, For Broken Ears (2020) and If Orange Was A Place (2021), both of which were well received. We can almost guarantee that her first full-length will get similar praise as well. Across the 18-song, nearly hour-long project, fans can expect a personal journey of learning to deal with fame, relationships, as well some introspection. Born in the Wild could mean a few things, but since Tems says it is all about her mindset and how she has grown. “It’s more about the state of being. It was a wilderness in the environment I lived in and there’s so many things that happened and so many lessons I learned to come and be this person now. It is basically coming out of the wilderness.”

Ice Spice is easily one of the biggest young artists in the world right now. Overall, she has had that title since the late stages of 2022. Ice Spice Unveils Cover Art And Release Date For Her Debut Album “Y2K”

Ice Spice is an artist who has been exploding in popularity since 2022. Overall, the song “Munch” was a viral hit, and since that time, the artist has leveled up with co-signs from Drake, Nicki Minaj, and even Taylor Swift. She has had some massive singles and even found herself on the Barbie soundtrack. Needless to say, she is a massive artist in the world of hip-hop, even if some fans are a bit skeptical as to what she will be able to produce next.

For instance, the artist has been teasing her debut album. This has come with singles such as “Gimmie A Light” and “Think U The Shit.” Unfortunately, these singles have not received the reception the artist was probably hoping for. However, that is not stopping her from carrying forth the rollout for her debut project, Y2K. In fact, this morning, the artist revealed that the album will be dropping on Friday, July 26th. She also showcased the cover art, which is full of old early 2000s aesthetics.

Open Mike Eagle’s Previous Industries Leaves Off Loose & Abstract Single “Zayre”

Just a few months ago, a new three-headed monster was born. That would the combination of underground hip-hop greats Open Mike Eagle, Video Dave, and STILL RIFT. Together they are known as Previous Industries, and their de facto leader is the first of those three names. If you know anything about these guys, you are well aware by now that doing things by the conventional hip-hop playbook is not the forte. When you go into their music, you are in for a one-of-a-kind listening experience almost every time. Even though these three gentlemen are Chicago natives, they are currently based out of the L.A. area. Pretty soon, these East coasters are going to be dropping their first album.

But before that comes, Previous Industries is back with a new promotional single called “Zayre”. This is their third drop overall, but it is their fourth track. Their inaugural release was a two-pack consisting of “Showbiz” and “Braids”. After that followed “Pliers”, which hit platforms on April 23.

Listen To “Zayre” By Previous Industries

One thing that is cool about each song title so far, is that each one is a reference to a former business. You can credit Stereogum for discovering that neat fun fact. What is even cooler is that Previous Industries is playing into this quite a bit, even including hidden meaning in their lyrics. “When you have time, watch the commercials for Zayre and know that it was a real place where people bought action figures and pants. The producer Child Actor is a genius. He showed us his formula once, and we got really scared… There’s secret lyrics to the hook that [Open Mike Eagle will] never tell you. Dave might tell you for the right price, but he never will”. Fans can try and discover more hidden gems when Service Merchandise drops on June 28.

What are your thoughts on “Zayre” by Previous Industries? Is this their best singles as of late, why or why not? Does this get you excited for their upcoming debut album Service Merchandise, why or why not? What is your favorite aspect of the track? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Wolffacejoeyy Drops His Debut Album “Valentino” After Years Of Anticipation

Staten Island, New York rapper and singer wolffacejoeyy has been creating a lot of buzz over the last few years, especially in 2024. The 21-year-old classifies himself as a sexy drill artist, and we can see why. He has an incredible knack for gliding over moody and sensual sped-up instrumentals with a buttery smooth cadence. People have been looking forward toward Valentino, his debut album after tiding fans over with mixtape titles all your fault (2022) and 22joeyy (2023). According to Genius, the origins for this project began back in late 2021.

Over the last three years, wolffacejoeyy has been steadily tweaking and restructuring every fine detail of Valentino. Now, all of that hard work and perseverance to push through and create his longest project to date has paid off. Originally, this was going to be an EP, but in an interview with The FADER, joeyy was destined to go all out for his fans and himself. “So, this one I wanted to really challenge myself, and my team really pushed me — they were like, ‘Yo, let’s try and make this feel like a full-blown project.’ So, the idea just slowly evolved into a whole album and building the world behind it.”

Listen To Valentino By Wolffacejoeyy

That perfectionist mentality is evident right from the opening cut to the closer. The “wya” artist mentioned how a handful of projects he considers flawless, led him to feel there was no room for error. “I’ve always wanted to make my own Days Before RodeoRodeo or ASTROWORLD or Igor or A Love Letter To You 3 or Blonde… I always try my best to really go into [recording a project] trying my best to make it as seamless as possible, so everyone can listen to it from top to bottom.” We feel that wolffacejoeyy has a winner with Valentino, as the melodies and instrumentals are stellar and sticky. Cash Cobain would be a proud dad, being a pioneer of sexy drill himself.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album Valentino by wolffacejoeyy? Which songs are you gravitating toward the most right now? Today In Hip Hop History: KMD Released Their Debut ‘Mr. Hood’ 33 Years Ago

tumblr 3d8bcdf725917940327567ea0ffcb225 a18811ec 1280

On this day in Hip Hop history, duo KMD released their debut LP, Mr. Hood. Although it may not have had much commercial success, Mr. Hood ushered in the career of one of Hip Hop’s most respected figures, MF DOOM.

Mr. Hood came at a time in Hip Hop culture where consciousness and positive Afrocentric messages were prominent in the majority of popular rap music. The Nubian renaissance taking place in Hip-Hop at the time birthed artists like Queen Latifah, Brand Nubian, and The Jungle Brothers.

Lyrically, Mr. Hood‘s subject matter is politically charged while being able to retain its youthful nature. Zev Love X and Onyx the Birthstone Kid were able to satirize and intellectually dissect oppressive American culture and weave it seamlessly into their rhymes.

DJ Subroc’s production is also of merit. The sampling techniques used to turn already composed pieces into separate instruments meshed perfectly with the group’s style and influenced generations of producers to come. Even the “Mr. Hood” character that appears throughout the album was sampled clips from a language-learning tape.

Released by Elektra Records, the album’s commercial success does not reflect its importance. KMD and Mr. Hood did a lot for the culture as far as promoting righteousness. Their message is one that inspired not only fellow artists but also a community to be conscious of their culture and grow as a people against a system built against them. Take some time to listen to the beginning of the career of some of Hip Hop’s most influential underground artists.

Salute to DOOM(RIP) and his brother DJ Subroc(RIP) for giving fans this important piece of Hip Hop history!

Today In Hip Hop History: DMX Dropped His Debut Album ‘It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot’ 26 Years Ago

On this day in Hip Hop history DMX released his debut album It‘s Dark and Hell Is Hot. This is DMX’s most popular project to date, with Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood serving as a close second. Within the first week of its release selling 251,000 copies debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The LP went on to become certified quadruple platinum on December 18th, 2000.

This project came during a turbulent time in Hip Hop. The genre was coming off of the loss of two titans, Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G., and was facing a change in what was hot. With the rise of high energy production melded with dark and oft-violent lyricism coming from camps like No Limit, Cash Money, and Three 6 Mafia, DMX’s sound allowed him to find his place perfectly within the current trend while add his own twist.

DMX’s melancholic realism spoke to the generation. This project was able to simultaneously turn the party up and cause its listeners to think introspectively about the concept of good and evil and existence as a whole. This album touched on the struggle and pain that came being DMX. As most rappers would glamorize the finer side of the industry life, DMX reveals through this debut that even early on in his career he had been wrestling with the demons that come with wealth and fame.

The stand out hit of the album, “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”, has been deemed as a classic squad anthem. Produced by Swizz Beatz, the single peaked at #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #79 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.

Following this album, DMX went on to release six other studio albums and rise to be one of the most popular and influential artists of the early 2000s. Shortly following the release of this album DMX made his film debut in the hit film Belly with fellow New York rapper, Nas.

Channel Tres Begins Rollout For His Impending Debut Album With Lead Single “Berghain” Featuring Barney Bones

After a handful of EPs, loads of features across multiple genres, and several loose singles, Compton, California multi-talent Channel Tres is prepping for his debut album. According to multiple reports, including Pitchfork, the soon-to-be 33-year-old is titling the project Head Rush. The release date is June 14 and will be released through RCA records. To get the ball rolling on it, Channel Tres has decided to drop the project’s lead single “Berghain,” with fellow Cali artist Barney Bones. Over the course of his complex career, Channel has never really fit into one genre. His chameleon-like tendencies shine through on this nightclub ready track once again.

The comparison is apt here because this song has a personal tie to the Berlin, Germany club of the same name. It is personal due to the fact that Channel visited this location, and it inspired him to create this trippy and hypnotic cut. “It’s about the time I played Berghain and how the culture in that environment made me feel, I didn’t feel weird anymore. Everyone’s the same, the goal for everyone in that place is to enjoy themselves and be free, and music played a pivotal role in that, said Tres.
