Plain White T’s Refuse To Believe Drake’s “Wah Gwan Delilah” Is Real

Drake has really confused fans. His decision to cover “Hey There Delilah” as “Wah Gwan Delilah,” with a Jamaican accent in tow, has sparked widespread debate. Is he trolling? Is he being serious? Did he think this would look good after the Kendrick Lamar battle? Drake’s intentions remain unclear, but what is clear is that “Wah Gwan Delilah” will go down as one of the most dubious releases of his entire career. It’s so dubious, in fact, that the band who sang the original, Plain White T’s, think the cover is fake.

Plain White T’s posted a reaction to the song on their X (formerly Twitter) account on June 5. The video sees all four members of the band sitting down and hearing “Wah Gwan Delilah” for the first time. They don’t have much to say during Snowd4y’s verse, but singer Tom Higgenson was ready to hear the 6 God. “Here we go,” he said, shortly before Drake’s verse began. Within seconds, however, Higgenson shakes his head and looks at the camera. He’s not buying it. “That’s not Drake,” he announced. “It’s crazy that everybody thinks it’s real… Seems like it’s very obvious.” Another member of the band chimes in, saying “there’s no f*cking way” that Drake actually covered the song.

Plain White T’s Think The Drake Cover Is AI

Despite the skepticism, Plain White T’s are flattered by the attention. “I don’t know,” Higgenson added. “But it’s cool. Whatever.” He closes out the reaction by looking at the camera and fervently shaking his head like he’s in an episode of The Office. There have been multiple covers of “Hey There Delilah” over the years, but most have been in the indie rock genre. The Baseballs, Boyce Avenue and Egg have put a spin on the song since it was released in 2006. The original Plain White T’s version was a real crossover hit, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It also netted the band two Grammy nominations.

To be fair to Plain White T’s, Drake has had a complicated relationship with AI tech over the years. It was an AI song made to sound like Drake, “Heart on My Sleeve,” that was submitted to the Grammys and led to a widespread debate about the legitimacy of the technology. The Toronto rapper also used AI against Kendrick Lamar on the “Taylor Made Freestyle.” The latter saw him use the technology to emulate the voices of Tupac and Snoop Dogg. Drake has yet to stay whether “Wah Gwan Delilah” is real or not, but he did repost the song on his Instagram.

Drake Just Covered “Hey There Delilah” And The Internet Is Baffled

Drake claimed he was done beefing with Kendrick Lamar. He was gearing up for “summer vibes,” which got fans of classics like “Controlla” and “Passionfruit” excited. Drizzy may not have won the K. Dot battle, but he’s always been good for hits. Right? Well, the enthusiasm for “summer vibes” has dimmed. The 6 God decided take a hard left and release a collab cover of the Plain White T’s song “Hey There Delilah.” Yes, the one you’re thinking of. Drake flipped it, though, so the title is now “Wah Gwan Delilah.”

To make things even more complicated, the cover is actually a remix of a cover originally released by the singer Snowd4y. Drake pulled a Soundcloud era move by hopping on a song that was already gaining a little bit of traction. The thing is, the song choice is baffling. Especially with the 6 God pouring Autotone on his vocals and swapping out the original lyrics for Toronto slang. The slang has resulted in good songs but there’s no defending this one. “Wah Gwan Delilah” is going to provide Drake haters with ammo for a long time.

Drake Teamed Up With Toronto Artist Snowd4y

“I just show my dog your ‘Gram. He said he knows a man that slapped it, I’m so cheesed,” he sings. “Your ‘mademoiselle’ nights are geeked, I’m bent lowkey. Wah gwan, Delilah? Double date me if you like me.” It is a couplet so cringe-inducing it doesn’t even require analysis. It looks bad on paper, and sounds bad on record. It’s worth noting that this is the only song by Snowd4y listed on Genius. Snowd4ay is a new artist from the 6, which explains Drake’s desire to link up with him. Outside of repping the city, though, it’s hard to imagine what the rapper was thinking when he agreed to hop on the remix.

This confusion has understandably driven the social media response to “Wah Gwan Delilah.” Fans really want to know what’s going on with Drake, and whether he will ever be the same after the Kendrick Lamar battle. It seemed silly to believe that the rapper would struggle to get his footing after the beef, but this is an undeniably bad release. “Drake dropped that sh**ty song wah gwan Delilah with the Toronto accent,” one user wrote. “We not beating the washed allegations.” Another was baffled by Drake’s musical falloff in such a short period of time. “Drake is unreal,” they tweeted. “Just had one of the most insane beefs in hip hop history and drops this sh*t right after.”

Jennifer Hudson And Renee Rapp Take On “Dangerously In Love”

There’s been speculation surrounding Jennifer Hudson for a couple reasons this year. The first was her potential relationship with Common. The dating reports go all the way back to early this year but the couple are clearly content to keep things pretty lowkey. There’s also been rumors swirling, not helped by Hudson herself, or a potential Verzuz between her and Fantasia.

On the other hand, Renee Rapp is having quite an impressive breakout 2023. Her rise in star power ultimately concluded with a nomination for Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards. While she and Peso Pluma were eventually beaten out by Ice Spice, it’s still a pretty significant achievement to be nominated.
