City Girls’ Awkward Rolling Loud Interviewer Responds To Backlash: “I STILL GOT PAID”

Rolling Loud California is over for another season, but the internet isn’t quite done talking about the hip-hop festival yet. Praise is continuing to pour in for 23-year-old Ice Spice, who brought in one of the biggest audiences of the weekend for her set, and plenty of other female artists showed their stuff too. Among them were Nicki Minaj, who made a surprise visit during Lil Wayne’s stage time, and the City Girls, who debuted a new song while they were performing.

“Piñata” is the title of the unreleased single. We have no official premiere date as of now. Still, Yung Miami previously said that new music from her and JT is coming sometime this spring and/or summer. As they put on a show, rapping old favourites from their discography, as well as more recent arrivals, the City Girls reminded audiences exactly why they love them. From their curve-hugging, coordinated outfits to the sheer excitement of securing the bag at Rolling Loud beside their best friend, the partners in rhyme looked as though nothing could ruin their mood last weekend.

City Girls Take Rolling Loud California 2023

Unfortunately, that energy didn’t last long. At one point during the festival, Caresha and Jatavia spoke with media personality Tamera Kissen, and needless to say, the interview was nothing short of unprofessional. In a clip that’s been circulating online, the host and Yung Miami go back and forth about previously linking up at an event while JT awkwardly watches on. By the time the City Girls start answering questions, things only become more embarrassing to take in.

“Did you know it’s the 50th day of hip-hop today?” Kissed asked. “No,” the REVOLT podcast host responded. “Me neither, they told me to talk about it,” the host said, obnoxiously laughing. Shortly after, she began pressing the City Girls for details on when they “last let a broke dude hit,” among other uncomfortable topics. As the video continues to circulate online, plenty of backlash is pouring in for the interviewer. At the same time, the “Twerkulator” artists are hearing praise for pushing through the weird moment.

Tamera Kissen Responds to Backlash

On her Twitter page, Kissen has had plenty to say about her chat with the City Girls. “The community really don’t f*ck with you if you ain’t full Black, let’s just be honest,” she vented online. In response, another user wrote, “No baby, it was just a really bad interview. Like… horrific. Nothing to do with race, learn and grow.” Not letting the haters get her down, the 28-year-old continued to rant about the situation in another series of tweets.

“Some FYI: When footage is raw and unedited like that and people throw things at you last min as an interviewer it’s because someone on the job doesn’t want you to do good. Nothing I haven’t dealt [with] before,” she began. “Shit really ain’t that serious. The girls that don’t like me all look the saaaaaaaaaame.” Kissen went on to compare the industry to being back in high school before reminding followers that “at the end of the day, [SHE] STILL GOT PAID.” Let us know what you thought of the City Girls’ awkward Rolling Loud interview below, and check back later for more pop culture news.

City Girls’ Awkward Rolling Loud Interview Makes Rounds Online: “JT’s Face Says It All”

If you didn’t catch the City Girls’ set at Rolling Loud California this past weekend, you definitely missed out. Both JT and Yung Miami were looking “real bad,” wearing coordinated blue and yellow feather-clad bodysuits that markedly left their busts on display. Besides looking good, the rap divas were sounding good too, performing some of their old fan favourites, as well as previewing new music that’s coming, hopefully, soon.

During their roughly 30 minutes on stage, the “Twerkulator” hitmakers previewed “Piñata,” a bass-heavy track that’s sure to sound great in the clubs this summer. It remains unclear exactly when the City Girls will be releasing the song, but fans are undeniably hungry for a follow-up to July 2022’s “Good Love” featuring Usher. While attending an event for Netflix’sYou People earlier this year, Yung Miami confirmed that the warmer seasons will likely see a return from her and JT this year.

New Music from City Girls OTW

The duo’s last project, City On Lock landed in 2020, boasting tracks like “P*ssy Talk” and “Jobs.” Caresha and Jatavia also lined up a strong roster of guest features, including Yo Gotti, Doja Cat, Lil Durk, and Lil Baby. Here’s hoping that their next release yields just as many must-hear collaborations for fans of the City Girls.

Elsewhere at Rolling Loud, an awkward interview that the rap divas gave has been circulating online, with many chastising the journalist for her lack of professionalism. In the clip, she and Miami realize they know one another from a previous engagement, though neither of them seems prepared to explain what it was. While they uncomfortably chat in front of the camera, the look on JT’s face makes it clear that the vibes are weird for her too.

Rolling Loud Ridiculousness

“Did you know it’s the 50th day of hip-hop today?” she asks the partners in rhyme following the odd banter. “No,” Miami responds. “Me neither,” the journalist says with an obnoxious laugh. “They told me to talk about it.” As she and Caresha laugh, JT’s face becomes even more laughable as she tries to contain her annoyance. After hearing the media personality’s next question, however, all bets were off.

“When was the last time you let a broke dude hit?” she confidently asked the City Girls. “Never,” the podcast host immediately says with a straight face. “Probably like, 2014,” the “Ex For A Reason” artist said, side-eyeing the interviewer while speaking. Check out all the ridiculousness in the video above, and let us know what you thought of Rolling Loud California 2023 in the comments.

Lil Uzi Vert Says He Got JT To Believe In Satan In New Song

Hip-hop’s infatuation with demonic spirits isn’t something new but it seems as though artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti are keeping that tradition alive. Many rappers have explored the evil forces in their music, whether it be Three 6 Mafia or Lil Nas X, who caused a storm after performing a lap dance on a Satanic figure. Some feel as though these individuals are pushing a devilish agenda, while others argue that it’s merely for the purpose of entertainment.

Artists like Lil Uzi Vert haven’t necessarily denied their alleged satan worshipping agenda. Uzi previously got into a back-and-forth with Offset about the use of the upside-down cross, which he felt was symbolic of the occult. “All y’all n***as wearing upside-down crosses, even my little partners, stop that shit,” Offset said. “You look lame. All that worship the devil shit. Get with God man.” It ultimately led to a back-and-forth involving XXXTENTACION and SahBabii. However, Lil Uzi Vert has largely died down on looking like an agent for the devil for more eccentric looks, like his fit at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards this past weekend.

Lil Uzi Vert’s Song Preview

It was a big weekend in California as Rolling Loud brought their three-day festivities to the West Coast. Throughout the weekend, fans were treated to some exciting performances from artists like Lil Wayne, Lil Baby, and Playboi Carti, though some felt as though the latter’s set was a bit too demonic. However, Lil Uzi Vert’s Sunday set had people talking, from his hairstyle for the evening, as well as the new records he previewed.

At one point, Uzi performed an unreleased cut that built fans’ excitement for his next release, Pink Tape. However, one bar, in particular, caught everyone off guard. At one point, he raps, “I make a City Girl believe in Satan,” which led to rumors that his girlfriend, JT, joined the occult. Paired with the “Throw up the Roc, ’cause that’s the nation,” bar, Uzi took many people back with the unreleased tune. At this point, Lil Uzi Vert hasn’t expounded on the bar, nor has JT addressed the matter but we’ll keep you posted if either comment on the record. Check out the song snippet above and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

Yung Miami Explains Not Wanting Marriage, City Girls Preview New Music At Rolling Loud

The Rolling Loud California festivities have nearly wrapped for another season, but there’s still plenty to discuss regarding the countless performances. Some of Saturday’s biggest sets came from Rubi Rose, Duke Deuce, Curren$y, Young Nudy, Chief Keef, and Kevin Gates. The name attendees were most excited to see return to the stage, however, was Travis Scott, whose set ultimately only lasted about 30 minutes.

La Flame’s show may have been a flop, but thankfully, Lil Wayne saved the evening by bringing out Nicki Minaj, who reminded everyone in the vicinity exactly why she’s the Queen of Rap. Earlier in the day, several other female artists impressed, including Mellow Rackz, and BIA, who debuted her new “SIXTEEN” single. Additionally, the City Girls put in work, letting us know that their next project will be seriously hot.

City Girls Crush Their Rolling Loud Set

On Saturday (March 4) evening, Yung Miami and JT entertained thousands of fans in person and at home on the Rolling Loud stage. Both rap divas had their curves on full display in coordinated, feather-clad blue and yellow outfits, which complimented their music’s fun, confident vibe. They pulled out plenty of fan favourites from their discography, and also surprised the crowd while teasing new music.

While the City Girls grooved and rapped along to the bass-heavy beat for “Piñata,” their dancers markedly moved their behinds with the music. Though they didn’t know the few bars yesterday, they’re sure to be stuck in fans’ heads after listening to the teaser on repeat. It remains unclear when we’ll be hearing Caresha and her partner in rhyme’s catchy song, but fingers crossed that it lands before summer to help set the mood.

Yung Miami Isn’t Feeling Marriage

Elsewhere in the news, the REVOLT podcast host is making headlines for expressing her views on marriage. “I don’t want to get married cos I feel like men are not faithful,” she said during a recent Instagram Live session. “I take everything personal, I will never forget. If my husband cheats on me, Imma kill him.” As you may know, Yung Miami spends plenty of her free time with Diddy, though they both make it well-known that they’re still single. Read more about their unique relationship dynamics here, and check back later for more pop culture news.

Broccoli City Festival’s 2023 Lineup Includes Brent Faiyaz, Jazmine Sullivan, And Lil Uzi Vert

Broccoli City Festival has long been one of Washington, DC’s premiere music festivals, highlighting both local talent and rising stars of the wider music world since its inception in 2013. This year’s lineup continues that tradition, including headliners Brent Faiyaz, Jazmine Sullivan, and Lil Uzi Vert.

Outside of the headliners, the 2023 edition of the Broccoli City Festival also includes Afropop breakouts Asake and Rema, hip-hop it-girls like City Girls, GloRilla, Ice Spice, and Lola Brooke, and R&B standouts Coco Jones and Mariah The Scientist. Naturally, local acts like Fat Trel, Backyard Band, UCB, and more will also appear, with a battle of the bands highlighting the regional go-go sound.

The festival is set to take place on July 15th and 16th at the RFK Festival Grounds in Washington, DC. Tickets and more information can be found here.

Last year’s festival was headlined by Ari Lennox and Summer Walker, with appearances from 21 Savage, Don Toliver, Jeezy, Lil Durk, Masego, Tems, and Wizkid. However, it was also struck by controversy when Wale, widely considered the patron saint of DC hip-hop, declared he was pulling out of the show shortly after its lineup was announced due to feeling “disrespected” by his low placement on the flyer. However, the dispute was quickly resolved, with the flyer being updated to include “and friends” to reflect the outreach he does for local acts.

‘Bel-Air’: Here’s All The Music You Heard In Season 2, Episode 1

(SPOILERS for this week’s Bel-Air episode will be found below.)

Bel-Air is back for season two and things aren’t as wholesome as any of the show’s characters would’ve hoped to start. The season one finale was highlighted by Will’s decision to leave the Bel-Air mansion after he learned that Phil, Viv, and his mom lied about Will’s father. Though it was done out of love and protection, Will felt betrayed by the most important adults in his life. Thankfully though, what started as a family divided to begin episode one of Bel-Air season two, ended as one reunited as Phil put his pride aside to apologize to will and invite him back into the house. Elsewhere, love is in the air for Jazz and Hilary!

The aforementioned events in the first episode of Bel-Air season two are soundtracked by songs that help to accentuate the emotions behind each scene. You can find a list of them belong as well as details about the scenes that the records soundtracked.

Nipsey Hussle — “Last Time That I Checc’d” Feat. YG

Nipsey Hussle’s “Last Time That I Checc’d” off Victory Lap checks in around the 01:24 mark. A short time later, we see Will who wakes up in a slightly messy room — one that is notably not in Uncle Phil’s massive Bel-Air mansion — to get dressed for the day. He heads out into the city to start his day. We later learn that the room is in Jazz’s house in South Los Angeles.

MIKNNA — “Angel City”

MIKNNA’s record plays faintly in the background around the 3:02 mark as Will orders some breakfast at a local restaurant. A man named JB meets him there and he gives Will some money that was made off some a deal they had. We later find out that JB is helping Will secure basketball matchups for money.

Bryce Green & 81Maantra — “Boom”

We hear Bryce Green & 81Maantra around the 06:18 mark as Will and Carlton are driving to school together. Carlton lets Will know that Phil and Viv are worried about him, but Will’s rather large stash of cash has Carlton worried about what Will is doing to make money.

Easy McCoy — “Deja Vu”

At around the 07:15 mark, Easy McCoy’s “Deja Vu” briefly plays as the Bel-Air title flashes on the screen. This record is the theme song for Bel-Air.

The Royal Chief — “See Me Now”

The Royal Chief’s “See Me Now” plays around the 10:09 mark while Will and Carlton walk through the halls of their school. Carlton explains what’s changed with his school friends and also throws out the idea of him and Will becoming the school’s latest dynamic duo. Carlton may also have a new crush, a girl named Yazmin, on his hands.

BOSCO — “Easy” Feat. Smiles Davis & Royal Bait

BOSCO’s song can be heard around the 13:25 mark. At this point of the episode, Hilary meets with Ivy as they begin their run as the leaders of the content creator house. It’s also here that Hilary learns about her responsibilities as a manager and the true dynamic of her business relationship with Ivy.

Freddy Bam Bam — “Need You”

Freddy Bam Bam’s “Need You” plays softly in the background around the 15:04 mark when Hilary vents to Jazz about having to fire two men from the influence house. Afterward, they discuss their relationship status and whether or not it’s time to place an official label on it, something Hilary isn’t in a rush to do.

Last Verse — “Semper”

At around the 28:34 mark, Will walks onto an outdoor basketball court in Venice as Last Verse’s “Semper.” It’s there that he hopes to meet a scout named Doc in order to form a relationship and further his basketball career.

Via The Great — “Champion”

Via The Great’s “Champion” plays around the 31:45 mark and it soundtracks Will’s pick-up game against a much bigger guy named Big Dre. Things start off slow for Will, but he eventually picks things up and wins the game.

City Girls — “Good Love” Feat. Usher

The party begins around the 37:14 mark. It’s Ashley’s official 13th birthday party and it gets underway with City Girls’ “Good Love” being the record that everyone dances to. While most of the attendees are dancing together and having a great time, Hilary stands at a distance jealous of Jazz dancing with Ivy.

Manus — “On Top” Feat. Turbo9

Manus’ “On Top” plays around the 38:21 mark as Phil overlooks the water deep in thought. Carlton comes up to him and gently confronts him about running away from the issues and tension between Phil and Will. A short time later, Phil asks Will to speak with him.

Saweetie — “Bo$$ Chick”

To round out the music at the end of this episode, Saweetie’s “Bo$$ Chick” plays around the 42:55 mark. Saweetie herself makes an appearance to sing happy birthday to Ashely and gives her well-wishes on a new year of life. Will makes the tough decision to put things on pause in their relationship.

These Documentary Filmmakers Are on a Mission To Elevate Hip-Hop Storytelling

On ‘City Girls: The Series’

Image via MGX

In 2019, JT of the City Girls was released from prison after serving over a year of time for credit card fraud charges. They went back to work immediately, releasing “First Day Out” that day. Here’s how the MGX guys would describe their project, which documented that time:

Gill: Unapologetic creative expression. That project is saying that [even when] in the face of people criticizing and trying to take you [down], when people are unapologetically creative and not contrived, that’s something that truly inspires people. When you’re unapologetically you in doing you and people are uncomfortable—that’s the sh*t moves the needle for a lot of people, in this case, a lot of women, a lot of men too. And I think it’s important.

Malikyar: One other thing to add to that too would be friendship and loyalty. It was cool to see the relationship between the two of them and how genuinely loyal they were and looked out for each other in the different roles they play in that friendship. Because I would hope everybody has a best friend or that figure in their life. I feel like they’re representative of that relationship for other people in their own way, of course. But that bond is still the same.

On Marshmello’s Projects

Image via Publicist

For the first few years of their career, while still in college, they worked to help further define Marshmello’s brand and tackle the question of ‘why is this silent sensation dominating our culture?’ Here’s how they would define what he illuminates:

Malikyar: I think humanity would be one and connectivity would be the other. And the reason why is the ethos behind the idea of Marshmallo is that we are all Marshmallo. He’s a character. It’s open for interpretation. It’s so global, everybody sees themself in Marshmalloe and you can beat anything. And it’s supposed to shed light on the fact that this character is a little piece of all of us. And it serves as a medium to express that idea. It’s almost like the superhero, the Batman, the whatever, you put on that helmet and you can be whoever you want to be type of thing. I don’t know if you have anything to add to that.

mgxcreativestorymarshmelloguystwo

Gill: His character doesn’t speak yet for some reason it’s cut through in all these different communities around the world, which all that says is that we’re a lot more connected as people than we all think. And I think what our music video series did was the goal of it was to create, and if you get time to watch any of them, one of them is about bullying, one about first love, one about your friends moving, one’s about problems you go through at home. These things that humans—whether you’re in India, the Philippines, Kentucky or Los Angeles—are experiencing. The connected aspect of the brand was really what we tried to do with these music videos. And what we tried to [have] people understand [is] that we’re all connected.

On Takeoff

Image via MGX

On Nov. 1, 2022, Takeoff was killed at the age of 28. The guys process, and reflect on their time with the Migos, then Unc & Phew, member:

Gill: It’s just really heartbreaking from the times that we worked with Takeoff, he was genuinely the nicest, most kind, thoughtful would stay after the shoot for hours to talk. I remember after one of the shoots, he stayed after an hour just to play [Culture II] for Daniel and I. And we were just like, “Wow, what a nice human being.” So through the documentary medium, you get to really connect with some of these artists in a vulnerable kind of human way that you can’t really if you’re shooting their music video or they’re in a commercial per se. We were able to get a lens into these artists’ world, and by no means did we have a 20-year relationship with them, but through these projects, we got to know them in a certain way and I guess the simplest way to put it is it’s just heartbreaking.

Malikyar: One other note, too, just reflecting on it, it just also shines a light on the fragility of everything.

On ‘Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby’

Image via Publicist

Over the course of 12 months, MGX Creative shadowed Lil Baby and told his story and those of many in his city. They process on what the project brought to light:

Gill: Socioeconomics and growth. Baby’s story illuminates a lot of the larger socioeconomic issues that our country is facing now and has been facing and the communities that exist because of that, that don’t ever get talked about. And people don’t ever take the time to actually understand, not from a baseline level, from a deeper mental, psychological level. The fact that doc about being mentally trapped because of where you’re from, have not seen that presented that way. The socioeconomic trap is not just a physical, monetary, literal trap; it’s also the mental world that America creates for certain communities. That’s the first part.

The second is growth; being able to see the power of growth in an artist in a person of color is so important to highlight because it’s going to allow other people of color and other individuals that may feel trapped to say, well if they can do it. Maybe I can do that. Maybe I won’t be the biggest rapper. Maybe I’ll be able to put myself through college. Or maybe I won’t be the biggest rapper. Maybe I’ll be able to go get a job at an insurance company. Whatever you’re thinking.
