Earlier this year Kali Uchis promised fans not just one, but two new albums this year. She also communicated to fans that one project would be entirely in English and the other entirely in Spanish. So far she seems to be living up to all of those promises. Back in March, she dropped Red Moon In Venus an English language embrace of Kali’s R&B stylings. It has a similar sonic palette to her critically acclaimed breakout project Isolation from 2018. Red Moon has features from Omar Apollo, Summer Walker, and Don Toliver and the album became Kali’s highest-charting project to date when it debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200.
Now Kali Uchis appears to be on her way to releasing a second album and just as she promised, it will be in Spanish. Details on the album aren’t available yet, but its lead single is officially out. The track is called “Muñekita” and features a pair of guests who make impressive contributions. JT of rap duo City Girls and dembow superstar El Alfa join Kali on the track. Together the trio create a tropical Latin trap banger that fans have already heaved praise onto. The song marks Kali’s first new Spanish language song since her 2020 album Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) ∞. You can listen to Kali’s new single below.
Kali Uchis Returns To Spanish Songs
In the press release dropped alongside the song Kali elaborated on how she chooses collaborators. “I love bringing artists together that you’d least expect. El Alfa is a Latino legend and JT is someone I’ve admired forever. Both of them are known for their summer hits and high energy, so I’m incredibly excited to bring them together for a fun, sexy song like this.”

It’s the beginning of a new era for JT of City Girls. After sharing her solo single “No Bars,” she’s already garnered much buzzy for her quick-witted punchlines and fiery flows. Today (July 15) she has shared the video for her viral new track.
In the video, she is seen dancing behind blue bars, rocking matching hair and a hoodie. This is juxtaposed with clips of JT partying and meeting fans across London and Paris, emphasizing the she and City Girls have become a worldwide sensation.
In a statement accompanying the song’s release this past week, JT said she hopes the song is the beginning of a new chapter in her artistry, and leads to more people taking her seriously in hip-hop.
“I hope this freestyle finds you in a great place and is a start of the respect I deserve in music,” she said. “I love music! I love my voice! I love poppin my sh*t.”
In addition to the song and the video, JT also launched No Bars Reform, a program designed to help formerly incarcerated women readjust to society by providing them access to employment opportunities, housing, and mental health services.
JT of Miami rap duo City Girls is helping formerly incarcerated women turn their lives around. Following the release of her scorching single, “No Bars,” JT has launched No Bars Reform to help these women re-enter society.
JT previously served a two-year prison sentence for credit card fraud, as City Girls began taking off. According to No Bars Reform’s official website, the program will help these women through employment opportunities, housing, social services, and therapy.
Back in March, JT took to Twitter to share that she herself had recently begun seeing a therapist herself.
“Super excited about starting therapy,” she said. “I encourage you all to do the same!”
Super excited about starting therapy, I encourage you all to do the same!
On a related note, JT wrote in a statement shared to No Bars Reform that she hopes her new music will lead to more audiences taking her seriously as an artist.
“I’d read the craziest things about myself and would want to scream,” JT said, but instead I went to the studio and popped my sh*t! I know most of y’all heard it but for those who haven’t I hope this freestyle finds you in a great place and is a start of the respect I deserve in music. I love music! I love my voice! I love poppin my shit.”
City Girls’ JT has returned triumphantly with her new solo release, “No Bars.” This marks JT’s first solo release as part of City Girls since her 2019 track “JT First Day Out,” which she dropped following her release from a year-long prison sentence and subsequent house arrest. “No Bars” will also be featured on the upcoming City Girls album.
Beyond her music, JT uses her voice and platform to positively impact incarcerated women. She has launched NoBarsReform.com, a website that assists women nearing release or recently released from prison with resources such as therapy, job placement, social services, and housing. This cause holds personal significance for JT, and she is committed to supporting women who may not have access to the necessary resources for a successful transition back into society. With her new music and philanthropic efforts, JT continues to demonstrate her passion for both her craft and making a difference in the lives of others.
The City Girls are actively out in the rap streets. Recently, the duo released singles “Piñata” and “I Need A Thug” to hold fans over until a complete project hit streaming platforms. However, member JT stepped out to drop a song of her very own to address criticism over her lyrical ability and the time she spent in Florida’s prison system.
Previously shared as a freestyle snippet, the rapper’s “No Bars” is finally here for fans to sink their teeth into. The song produced by BrizzyOnDaBeat & Noc is a cocky entendre where the Miami native tots the line of her City Girl persona and the vulnerable Jatavia only known to those closest to her as she spits the stanza, “Hood b*tch, dressed like a weirdo / Run away, now I’m steppin’ in some runway / B*tch, you can’t f*ck with my on yo’ birthday / Free my real b*tches, Corrlink and J-Pay / You gon’ be home, f*ck what the judge say.”
Even if for a second you think “No Bars” is a hint that the pair is breaking up, JT shuts that idea down as she rapped, “It’s City Girl sh*t / Even when you think it ain’t City Girl sh*t / I’m a City Girl, b*tch.”
In the spirit of the record’s message, the entertainer launched the No Bars Reform initiative to aid women who have been formerly incarcerated. On the movement’s official website, the mission is described, “After spending almost two years in a Florida Prison before being released in 2020, JT has vowed to use her voice and platform to help other incarcerated women rehabilitate into society by assisting with resources such as therapy, job placement, social services, and housing.”
Women in rap music have to face many obstacles that their male peers don’t. Recent controversies for artists like Sexyy Red and Ice Spice proved that female rappers have their every move analyzed. In a tweet made yesterday, GloRilla stood up for her female rap contemporaries. “Y’all hate on every hood b*tch dat make it out & its sickkkkk ,” the “F.N.F (Let’s Go)” rapper tweeted. She found an ally for her comments in City Girls rapper Yung Miami. Miami quote tweeted GloRilla and responded with “VERY .”
Yung Miami went even further in a follow-up tweet. “Y’all HATE to see black girls living the life they deserve make it make sense,” she said about an hour later. While it’s unclear what specifically sparked GloRilla’s original tweets they could be in reference to any number of controversies. Yung Miami could very well be referencing herself. Last month she responded to haters who claimed she can’t even rap. Miami, who has famously only been rapping for a few years, clapped back at the haters claiming she didn’t even need to rap to put them in their place.
Yung Miami Backs GloRilla Tweet
Yung Miami hasn’t had a quiet year musically either. Back in May, City Girls dropped their new single “Act Bad.” The track also featured Diddy and Fabolous and set itself up as an anthem for the “Act Bad Summer.” The pair followed it up with two more singles called “I Need A Thug,” and “Pinata.”
Yung Miami also teased fans with a potential remix of one of the biggest hits of the year from a female rapper. Latto and Cardi B teamed up for “Put It On Da Floor Again” which became a top 20 hit on the Hot 100. Following the song’s release Miami took to Instagram to post her own verse over its instrumental. While it hasn’t been officially released in any capacity fans have been spreading it online for weeks. What do you think of Yung Miami and GloRilla’s perspectives on women making it in rap? Lil Uzi Vert recently hosted a vibrant release party to celebrate the upcoming launch of their highly anticipated album, Pink Tape. Known for previous hits like “Lil Uzi vs. The World” and “Eternal Atake,” the Philadelphia rapper is ready to captivate fans with their latest musical offering. The City Girls have made a name for themselves in the world of rap for their unapologetic and risqué rap bars. The duo consists of longtime friends, Caresha “Yung Miami” Brownlee and Jatavia “JT” Johnson. Their careers took off unexpectedly in 2017 after their diss track “F*ck Dat N*gga” went viral. This eventually led to an uncredited appearance on Drake’s Billboard chart topper, “In My Feelings.”
The City Girls continued to work their way up into the consciousness of mainstream music. Soon enough, they began to rack up hits on various music charts. Now, the rap duo has achieved great success, not just for their music but for their bold fashion and outspoken personalities. They’ve also earned several wins and nominations over the years.
Early Days & The Formation Of City Girls
JT and Yung Miami are Miami natives and met as teenagers in middle school. JT was quickly determined to become close friends with Yung Miami, and the rest soon became history. Both women have stuck close to each other since their teenage years, proving a valuable help for their relationship.
JT has gone on record to share her difficult upbringing marred by a drug-addicted mother. The pair turned to rap, eventually buying a beat from MajorNine. The production, which featured a sample of Khia’s hit song “My Neck, My Back,” became the foundation for their debut track, “F*ck Dat N*gga.” The song was a diss track aimed at their respective broke ex-boyfriends and became a viral sensation. City Girls signed with Quality Control Music and featured on the successful compilation album, Control the Streets, Volume 1. By mid-2018, after their debut mixtape, Period, the City Girls would receive a huge career boost when their vocals were tapped to feature on Drake’s massively successful song “In My Feelings.”
Commercial Breakthrough & JT’s Prison Sentence
After skyrocketing to fame with the appearance on the Drake single, the City Girls experienced a major setback. JT turned herself in to the authorities and began a two-year sentence for identity theft. Much of the duo’s heavy lifting was placed on Yung Miami, who continued striving for more success. She worked hard to get their songs played at clubs in Miami and beyond.
While JT was in prison, the City Girls released their anticipated debut album, Girl Code. The album housed the Billboard charting singles “Twerk” and “Act Up.” “Twerk” quickly became a viral hit and featured a guest verse from Cardi B, who also appeared in the music video. “Act Up” remains the duo’s highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100.
After JT’s release from federal custody in March 2020, the duo quickly began recording their sophomore album. Titled City on Lock, the project received very positive reviews from music critics. It featured appearances from Lil Durk, Lil Baby, Doja Cat, and Yo Gotti. City on Lock enjoyed a successful rollout and peaked at the 29th position on the Billboard 200 chart. City Girls also enjoyed another viral moment with their popular song “Twerkulator.”
Yung Miami is a mother to a son and daughter, born in 2013 and 2019, respectively. Her son’s father was shot in 2020, and her daughter’s father is producer Southside. She has been romantically tied to Diddy since 2021.
Yung Miami has also released music as a solo artist and hosts a podcast. Her debut single, “Rap Freaks,” was released on October 29, 2021. It was a love letter to all the rappers currently killing it in the game. “Rap Freaks” peaked at the 81st spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Her podcast, Caresha Please, continues to enjoy success and has featured many notable guest stars.
Meanwhile, JT and fellow rapper Lil Uzi Vert have been dating for years and show no sign of slowing their romance down. She is also very active on social media, particularly Instagram. JT is a prominent influencer, showing off her unique fashion styles and choices.
Besides their work in music, the ladies are executive producers of the Max original series, Rap Sh!t. The comedy series created by Issa Rae follows the lives of Miami-based rappers navigating their journey to the top. Rae revealed the City Girls partly inspired the series and that “you can’t do a show in Miami about female rappers and not involve City Girls.”
