Bun B Takes Over the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

Bun B Says Tory Lanez Shooting Megan Thee Stallion Was 'Some Whore Sh*t'

Words by: Brandon Simmons

Bun B is always doing something for the community in Houston.  This past weekend, along with a host of other stars, the “Get Throwed” rapper showed up to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.

Bun B performed at the show last year and was invited again to be the face of Black Heritage Day. The NRG stadium was sold-out with nearly 75,000 people in attendance.  The Houston rapper performed with a band while sporting a leather fit with a poncho and cowboy hat, truly embracing the rodeo culture.

Artists on the lineup this year were Tela, Jazze Pha, 8 Ball & MJG, David Banner, Lil Flip, and Big K.R.I.T.  Attendees were in for a treat as more Hip-Hop legends hit the stage. Cupid, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Trinidad James, Slim Thug, Killa Kyleon, and Erykah Badu also performed.  Trinidad James was looking festive as well, performing his hit song, “All Gold Everything,” while dressed like the “King of Cowboys,” Roy Rogers.

The Rodeo Takeover was a success but didn’t end exactly the way the city wanted it to.  Unfortunately, the poncho Bun B was performing in went missing that night.  He took to Facebook to alert everyone and rewarded $1,000 to the person who returned it to him.  This poncho is near and dear to him as it has the UGK logo on it in the original Houston Oilers’ colors.  The Houston Oilers were a football team that originated in the AFL before the league merged with the NFL in the 60s and 70s.

Fortunately, the poncho was returned late Monday night as the 49-year-old rapper posted it on Instagram.

Logic’s “College Park” Album Boasts Features From Joey Bada$$, Bun B, RZA, And More

Despite previously retiring from rapping, this New Music Friday finds Logic making a triumphant return on his first independently released album. College Park arrived on DSPs at midnight on Friday (February 24), running over an hour in length and boasting several impressive collaborative efforts. The 33-year-old shared “Wake Up” featuring Lucy Rose as a single prior to his project, as well as “Highlife.”

Closer to College Park‘s debut, the lyricist also delivered “Lightsabers” in tandem with C Dot Castro. In the upbeat song’s accompanying music video, Logic gets his bars off for the camera while standing in the midst of flowing lava, rising buildings, and beautifully decorated rooms. Fans of the song’s guest feature will be happy to know that it’s not C’s only appearance on the album.

Logic’s Feel-Good “Lightsabers” Music Video

Logic tapped Castro to join him twice more, first on “Gaithersburg Freestyle” and later on 38.9897 °N 76.9378 °W. Both tracks also boast bars from Big Lenbo, and the former additionally finds Fat Trel and ADÉ showing out. Other noteworthy names on the tracklist include RZA, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, and Joey Bada$$.

As Hypebeast notes, College Park‘s title is a tribute to the town in Maryland where the Grammy-nominated artist slept in Lenbo’s basement for a year. Throughout the tracklist, Logic paints a sonic picture of what that time was like for him, markedly reflecting on his personal growth.

Bun B Says UGK Is Still $2Mil “In The Red” With Their Label

The music industry continues to face backlash from artists over its record deals, and Bun B made a surprising revelation about UGK. Despite complaints from chart-topping artists who warn of predatory contracts, every year, more and more dreamers sign their lives away, hoping to become the next big star. Recently, Bun B visited B High ATL and shared that UGK still owes money to their label.

“So, UGK was signed before, we were right there. But we took an advance on the last two albums, so we had to wait,” Bun expressed. “Because we took the advance in ’07, I think, we have to wait seven years after we hit that. There was a seven-year period when we took money after 2000. So, once we hit 2027, I believe our balance is clear.” He calls the whole cycle “balling in debt.”

“UGK has never made one dollar in royalties from the selling of our music. And we didn’t have our own publishing for about 17 years.” The startling truth of Bun B and the late Pimp C’s legendary career is a sobering reality. While fans see their favorite artists flex cash, jewels, and cars on social media, many of them also harbor similar debts. Additionally, Bun B admitted that having a good team—especially an attorney—can help artists figure out who owes what to whom. These are lessons that the Rap mogul continues to learn all these years later.

“Because I think UGK is still at least $2 million in the red with that label,” Bun added about Sony. “It’s built on a percentage. This thing is never built on how much money your art makes. It’s about how much money you make of what your art makes. So, with us having a 15 percent deal, that 15 percent has never gotten close to paying back the debt. Whereas their 85 percent, they profit very easily.” He further explained, “If you sign from 10 percent and your album sell a million records, your 10 percent is 100,000, and theirs is [900,000].

“They made your money back from you, but you still probably owe them money because you probably took an advance,” the rapper continued. Up-and-coming rappers are often enticed with advances that help them afford the finer things in life. Bun B warns against the temptation because, in the long run, that money needs to be paid back. “You shot videos, you had to record an album. So, you owe them 55, that’s on the low side.”

Bun B Shares Reaction To Jay-Z Using His Lyrics On “99 Problems”

Only a few might recognize Jay-Z’s reference to UGK in “99 Problems” but Bun B doesn’t seem to take any issue with that. During a recent interview on The People’s Party With Talib Kweli, Bun B reflected on Jay-Z using his bars from “Touched” on The Black Album highlight.

Kweli noted that not everyone is aware that Jay used his bars on the third verse of “99 Problems.” However, Bun B said he feels it was a way that Jay-Z showed respect to him and Pimp C.

“But I don’t feel like it’s that big of a deal. I would call it mutual respect,” he said. “We do this a lot in Hip Hop, right? Where we have artists who have said, ‘Fuck that was dope, the way he said that.’ And sometimes you wanna pay homage to that wordplay. How many songs, Kweli, have you listened to and been like, ‘I woulda rhymed that last part like this.’”

Bun went on to explain that Jay-Z ultimately put more people onto UGK’s Ridin’ Dirty hit by using his lyrics.

“I think you feel like, ‘This is a dope rhyme, I don’t think enough people heard this shit. I’m finna drop this shit in here.’ Sometimes you take a dope rhyme and make it a hook, and then people gotta go back and figure it out,” he continued. “But nah, I don’t think a lot of people know that. I don’t think it’s a big deal that they don’t know or a big deal if they do.”

Always keepin’ it trill.

After turning up the heat last month with his new mixtape, Bad Azz Yella Boy, Asylum’s Yella Beezy cranks up the heat as he pays homage to the legendary Texas rapper Pimp C with his new single “Pimp C” featuring EST Gee, which is accompanied with a music video featuring a guest appearances with Pimp C’s UGK rap partner, Bun B. Baccend Beezy continues his infectious return with another impressive southern-fried rap. He spits:

“That lil’ h** messy, you can’t tell her nothin’, on God she gon’ spread the word, lot of grammies like I’m tryna win awards, waitin’ on the first and third, got a lotta bows and I ain’t talkin’ ’bout clothes, but he tryna get a shirt, young n**ga bustin’ pack after pack, I’m tryna get a vert, heard them n**gas saying that they still tryna get me, well I’m tryna get ’em murked, I don’t take shit lightly when they talkin’, ’cause I’m ’bout to get ’em first…”

Bun B appears on the visual to co-sign the fellow Texan and the use of Pimp C likeness. Linking with EST Gee was also a great choice as he has been on a trailblazing path to the top in today’s hip hop. This year alone, EST Gee has released several collaborative projects, a deluxe version of his new album, and a string of a-list collaborations.

Bun B’s Trill Burgers Were Named ‘Best Burger In America’ On ‘Good Morning America’

Good Morning America has been on a quest to find the best burger in America. Today, the coveted title was given to Houston rapper Bun B, whose hometown-based burger pop-up series, Trill Burgers, has been making waves across the nation.

Bun was given the honor on today’s episode of Good Morning America, on which, he was gifted a trophy and a $10,000 check.

“H-Town, baby,” Bun said. “We did it, baby, Trill Burgers. It feels amazing. God is good and my team is amazing. You’re gonna get the best burger in America.”

Last weekend, Bun shared his Trill Burgers at Rolling Loud Miami. He is also one of many hip-hop artists who will be sharing their culinary creations in a food court at the upcoming Rock The Bells festival in Queens, NY on August 6. Also sharing their food are Nas, with the Brooklyn-based Sweet Chick, Mia X with the New Orleans-based Team Whip Them Pots, and Ghostface Killah, with the Staten Island-based Killah Koffee. This marks the first ever hip-hop food court experience, and it will be curated by Bun himself.

“For me, it’s the food now,” said Bun in a statement. “I still make music. I still perform, but [food] is my passion and it still keeps me in the culture.”

Bun B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
