French Montana Debates With His Kids Over Ice Spice Versus Latto

Unfortunately, it seems like fanbases are more propense to pit female rappers against each other rather than encourage collaboration. Whether that’s because of a more misogynistic industry landscape, interest in beef, or just pure coincidence is up for debate. Still, competition in rap is natural and even encouraged across all generations, because who wants to sit there and admit that they’re a worse MC than another? French Montana and his kids, though, approached this in quite the light-hearted way rather than feeding into the worst parts of those tendencies. While celebrating one of his sons’ graduation, the rapper acted as a mediator in a debate over whether Ice Spice is better than Latto or vice versa.

“Latto is better than Ice Spice!” the graduate exclaimed after one of French Montana’s friends, presumably, said as such. “He put you on video saying that,” his other son remarked before the graduate jumped in. “Nah, never,” the “I Can’t Lie” hitmaker said in an effort to moderate. “Y’all both equal, y’all both good.” Hilariously, his two sons joked about the femcees hitting them up.

French Montana Moderates Ice Spice Versus Latto Debate With Children

Interestingly enough, the 38-year-old has only worked with one of these artists so far. Him and Latto have a track with Ty Dolla $ign, “Striptease,” off of French Montana’s 2021 album “They Got Amnesia.” Of course, that’s not to say that French Montana and Ice Spice couldn’t have a collab in the future, just that he could’ve easily played into a bias with his comments. Fortunately, he was right to dismiss the competition, if only because his opinion as a fellow famous rapper could have more industry consequences than that of his kids. Latto, sometimes called Big Latto, is easily one of the most popular female MCs in the game. Initially calling herself Miss Mulatto during her days on Lifetime’s The Rap Game, she shortened the moniker to Mulatto. She would keep the name until 2021, where she would change it to simply Latto. Many fans wondered why the rapper would change her stage name, especially with the moniker being the namesake of classic mixtapes.

Alyssa Michelle Stephens, a.k.a Latto, was born in Columbus, Ohio, to a biracial couple. Her father, Shayne Stephens, is African American. Her mother, Misti Pitts, is white. In interviews, the artist revealed that her biracial ethnicity was the target of bullying while growing up. Her bullies often referred to the artist as a mulatto. Mulatto is a derogatory term to describe those who are mixed. The artist owned the term, using it for her stage name. 

The young artist explained the name’s background during her time on The Rap Game. Admitting it was a controversial choice, the future winner of the show said that she was passionate about her race, and her name was to flip the negativity of the term. “I took that negativity from the word mulatto and now … everybody calls me Miss Mulatto,” said Big Latto during her time on the show. The artist was 15 years old at the time.

The now 24-year-old eventually had a change of heart, shortening her stage name in 2021. Although it was a part of her identity, Latto admitted how continuing to use the term as a stage name could be problematic. “Mulatto was a negative term that I was trying to make positive,” said Latto in an interview with Billboard. “We’re gonna start positive, and I feel like that’s gonna bring that energy my way. I feel like, in a way, that could’ve been holding me back, and I don’t want to attach that to myself anymore.”

According to historians, the term mulatto was coined during the era of slavery. The term was popularized in the Southeastern United States. It was used to describe someone of mixed origin. A few Spanish-speaking countries consider it non-offensive, but it is generally considered offensive in non-Spanish-speaking countries.

Though she was trying to flip the negativity of the term into a positive, Latto could not avoid controversy. The artist received heavy backlash from critics, with a few accusing her of colorism. Some critics claim that the word is just as disparaging as the terms “colored” and “the n-word.” After acknowledging its history, fans felt Latto was racially insensitive and colorist in keeping the stage name. Although she would change her name, Latto had no shortage of back-and-forth arguments with fans online. Other incidents and online arguments also spurred accusations of colorism from fans. 

After changing her name, the Queen of the Souf rapper received praise and skepticism from fans. One Twitter user wrote, “L[a]tto had white music executives and corporate bigwigs casually calling her Mulatto like it’s 1821 and people can’t understand why it was a problem.” Another user called the action “performative progress,” tweeting, “But the ‘Latto’ in ‘Big Latto’ still stands for ‘Mulatto’… but y’all happy as hell [because] the ‘Mu’ is gone.” Though critics still questioned the history of the stage name, many of Latto’s fans came to her defense, feeling the change wasn’t necessary.

While the backlash provided for a strong controversy, Latto’s career continues to press on successfully. Despite the controversy from the previous years surrounding her name, the rapper had a hugely successful year in 2022. Latto won Top Rap Female Artist at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. The same year, she won the BET Award for Best New Artist. She received a nomination for Hip Hop Album of the Year at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards. The “Big Energy” rapper also received a Best New Artist nomination at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

Though previously facing backlash, Big Latto’s career seems to flourish without much damage. Though some still question the name change, her fans still defend the artist and appreciate her modesty in changing her name after the controversy. With the release of her latest single, “Put It On The Floor,” releasing a week ago, it seems that Latto, or Big Latto, is continuing to move her momentum in the right direction despite her previous controversy.

Following two weekends’ worth of standout performances at Coachella, Latto is once again showing her skills and talent as a rapper and performer on the festival circuit. Most recently, she visited Virginia Beach to perform at Pharrell’s Something In The Water festival. During her set, she put her twerking skills on full display, accentuated by live instrumentation and a killer drummer. However, since then, the two made amends and cleared up any assumptions of beef. In fact, things got so discussed online that a fake video of them fighting went viral after their reconciliation. Because you’re going to find a flaw and another flaw and another flaw and another flaw. Latto & Doechii Reportedly Beef Backstage At Billboard Women In Music

Two dominant forces in music right now seem to have gotten in some beef at the Billboard Women In Music awards ceremony. Moreover, Doechii and Latto reportedly exchanged words backstage after Doechii mentioned Nicki Minaj in her speech, who Latto has beef with. At least, that’s how many interpreted the occurrence. Furthermore, Doechii also performed at the event, treating fans with a medley of her tracks “Persuasive” and “Crazy.” Many fell absolutely in love with the performance and gave her flowers on social media. Also, she received the Rising Star award at Wednesday’s (March 1) L.A. event, and her speech might’ve prompted some anger from the 777 rapper.

“Girl, I done danced my shoe off,” the TDE rapper said during her speech after her mother presented her with the award. In addition, she acknowledged the other Rising Star recipients that came before her like Lady Gaga, Janelle Monáe, and of course Nicki Minaj. However, she hinted at her new direction and focus in a Billboard interview ahead of the show. “By year five I want to be at my peak,” she expressed. “I want to be in my Sasha Fierce era, the top of my game with still a long way to go — but I want to reach my prime and never leave it. It’s my pop era. Usually I’m alone [in the studio], but these days I’ve been inviting people in.. So my vibe is kind of changing; it’s a lot of energy. It feels like a party.”

Doechii Performs At Billboard Before Latto Beef

Meanwhile, Latto apparently made fun of that acceptance speech by mentioning other people who won her award as well. While it’s unclear who started off aggressively, things quickly escalated from there according to insider reports. Billboard allegedly asked Latto and her team to leave the premises. As such, many believe that she made the initial approach out of anger at the speech. Still, others maintain that the Rising Star was about to “crack” the “Big Energy” artist for her mockery, so it’s impossible to say for sure. Then, Doechii shared a Live of her singing along to “Barbie Tingz” by Nicki, seemingly leaving a message for Latto at the end. However, many are saying these reports are fake, especially given that Doechii actually posted a video of her cheering Latto on to her Story. Maybe that’s a diss, but one thing’s for sure: the situation’s quite murky.

Of course, if true, it’s incredibly unfortunate to see two female MCs allegedly beef at an event celebrating women in music. Also, it goes contrary to the message of female empowerment and support that Latto recently espoused. This isn’t her only bone to pick at the moment, as rapper VVSNCE also called her out for shade. However, Latto denied any beef on Twitter recently, tweeting “Y’all arms not sore yet from all that REACHING?????????!!!” Also, she included a video of her praising Doechii and an explanation of her speech. VVSNCE Exposes Latto DMs After Calling Her Out

Rising rapper VVSNCE continued to call Latto out after she said that she doesn’t charge female rappers for guest verses. Moreover, the “Big Energy” MC expressed a sentiment of wanting to help other women in rap succeed and giving them the proper support. After these comments came to light, the Kodak Black affiliate said that she refused to work with her. Furthermore, it seems like Latto felt pressured by Kodak to finish their collab on her debut album because she was ignoring VVSNCE’s DMs. Overall, she aired out a lot of her frustrations via an IG Story and video post.

“Everybody keep taggin’ me in this s**t, [I don’t care] ’bout no feature from her or nobody else,” she wrote. “She did do that lame s**t tho, ‘I don’t work with new female artists,’ [were] her EXACT words. That’s the real reason she was mad at Yak! She had to pay for that song on her album ‘cuz she ain’t wanna do a song with me.” Shortly after, she posted a screenshot of subsequent DMs with Latto to continue exposing her. “U coulda just asked me wassup yourself instead of believing what a n***a told u,” the 777 artist allegedly wrote.

Latto Called Out By VVSNCE

“These exchanges didn’t come til after a situation u clearly know nun about,” she continued. “I was told to come to his party in order to clear the verse. First I said no & then they said a verse for an artist on his label of his choice & I said no. My lawyer got the proposal on paper word for word. Ion even know you.” With this testimony, it seems that her refusal to work with VVSNCE stemmed more from disagreements with Yak’s camp than anything else.

Meanwhile, VVSNCE agreed that they don’t know each other, and thus didn’t understand why Latto would expect her to contact her “like [they’re] cool.” Furthermore, she chastised her for advising her against referring with her business partner. For what it’s worth, she said that it’s within Latto’s right to turn things down, but seemed to take issue with the narrative she’s fronting on social media. “Don’t expect me to not speak my truth,” she concluded after saying that their shared home city of Atlanta makes this all the more ridiculous. That’s what happened to 21 Lil Harold when he was asked about 21 Savage and Latto’s relationship. While talking to Hot 107.9, reporter MiAsia Symone snuck a sneaky question in about the rumored hip-hop romance.

“So, out of all the things you’ve been through in life,” she asked, “you know how, like, Savage got Latto?” Moreover, Lil Harold seemed to nod or give some sign of acknowledgement, meaning that Symone got him with the question. Still, she continued. “Is there somebody in your corner that has your back in the same way?”

“Oh, wait, wait, wait,” Lil Harold said. “I ain’t agree to that,” he said, and laughed off the interaction with MiAsia.

“You don’t think they cute together?” she asked, egging him on and having fun with the apparent confession.

“They cute together, but… them folks, they single. They friends,” he said.

“They’re friends?” Symone asked while laughing. “Yeah, they’re good friends,” Harold responded.

Moreover, this comes just days after 21 Savage had a viral and explosive interaction on Clubhouse where he spoke on Chicago and Atlanta’s rising murder rates. Many fans and community members are concerned for his safety and that of others in his circle. After all, with the YSL trial still underway, we’ve seen how small, innocuous confessions can lead to tragic results.
