The much-hyped Barbie movie is getting closer and closer, and as it does, we’re learning more about the film’s music. A Dua Lipa song for the soundtrack, “Dance The Night,” will be here in a matter of hours. Now, we know who else will be involved with the soundtrack.
As Rolling Stone revealed today, the project will feature Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Haim, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, The Kid Laroi, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress, Ryan Gosling, and Tame Impala. That’s not even everybody, as more artists are set to be announced ahead of the project’s release. Mark Ronson is the album’s executive producer.

Gosling on the soundtrack may seem like a surprise to some, but it shouldn’t: Aside from all the singing he did in La La Land, his band Dead Man’s Bones put out a self-titled album in 2009 (and Cat Power covered one of their songs in 2021).
Beyond that, Minaj’s presence is also notable, since she’s long adopted a Barbie persona. Ava Max, meanwhile, previously sampled Aqua’s classic “Barbie Girl” on her own 2017 track, “Not Your Barbie Girl.”
The album is set for release on July 21, the same day the movie premieres.

Barbie is set to be the cinematic event of the summer. Directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women), the film is set to take us to the Barbie world. While the film is set to feature a myriad of different Barbies, the main Barbie (i.e. the original pink-clad, blonde Barbie) is brought to life by Margot Robbie. She will go on the adventure of a lifetime alongside her boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling). The film’s cast is full of A-list talent and released trailers have already gotten the world hyped for the film’s release. Additionally, a new trailer will be released later on May 25.
Now, a pastel pink Barbie movie in 2023 would not be complete without a killer soundtrack. In fact, a film like this could live or die on its music. While some elements, like a Dua Lipa single, have been known for a while, we have now gotten our first look at an extended selection of the artists who will be contributing to the Barbie soundtrack.
Rolling Stone got an exclusive look at the Barbie soundtrack and accompanying album, which is available on July 21. The album is loaded with talent, with more artists set to be announced over the coming months. However, we have already been treated to 18 artists. According to promotional images, the soundtrack will feature Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, FIFTY FIFTY, Gayle, HAIM, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress, Ryan Gosling, Tame Impala, and The Kid LAROI. Dua Lipa’s single for the film, “Dance The Night”, will be released on May 25.
Furthermore, the lineup is absolute fire…with one exception. As many fans are asking, where is Aqua? The Danish pop group is essentially known for two songs, one of them being the iconic 90s hit, “Barbie Girl”. Hopefully, they will be announced soon or serve as a fantastic Easter Egg come the film’s release. However, “Barbie Girl” was sampled in Ava Max’s 2017 hit “Not Your Barbie Girl”. When it comes to acting, it’s very clear that Cena is more than happy to make fun of himself. Whether that’s as Amy Schumer’s gay-innuendo-spewing boyfriend in Trainwreck or as a caveman version of himself as in The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age SmackDown! Of course, he has had a plethora of action roles too, but he is most memorable when playing comedically. However, his next film role is set to be one of his more bizarre to date.
We’re still trying to figure out just how the universe of Barbies and Kens works in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie. There is a multiple of Barbies and a multitude of Kens. Some Barbies have a Ken, but some Kens appear unattached. This is how we end up with the apparent situation that Gosling!Ken and Liu!Ken are both vying for the affection of Robbie!Barbie. Even then, Robbie’s Barbie and Gosling’s Ken do appear to be in a pre-existing relationship.
But now we appear to know the extent of one Barbie-Ken pairing in the film. Dua Lipa had been previously announced as “Mermaid Barbie” during the first set of promotional releases for the film. Every Barbie is themed and other Barbies we were made aware of include the likes of Issa Rae’s “President Barbie”. But attendees at CinemaCon, who are getting a first look at Barbie before its July release, have learned that Mermaid Barbie has a Mermaid Ken. Mermaid Ken is set to be played by John Cena. It’s absolutely masterful casting and no matter how small the role is, Cena will almost certainly slay it. Barbie will premiere on July 21.

Nicki Minaj just took to Instagram to wish her husband Kenneth Petty a happy birthday. Not only that, but she took the chance to reference what role he plays in her Barb fandom. “HBD KEN LOVE BARBIE,” she captioned a picture of the two of them together, presumably a recent one. Currently, both are dealing with Petty’s legal troubles, which stems from two decades ago and is ongoing for various reasons. For one, he reportedly failed to register as a sex offender in certain jurisdictions and threatened his former accuser, trying to get her to drop charges and her side of the story.
Furthermore, many criticized Nicki Minaj for seemingly turning a blind eye to many of these accusations and court developments. However, that’s not to say that she stands completely separated from her husband’s legal woes. In fact, Minaj recently tried to sanction Petty’s accuser and her legal team to no avail. To elaborate, Jennifer Hough claimed that the couple harassed her and her daughter to try to get her to drop the case, in addition to bribing her.
However, this case is not that simple. Moreover, recently leaked footage seemingly shows Hough stating that she was pressured into pressing charges in the first place. “There’s no statute of limitations on perjury,” she said in the leaked footage. “Perjury is when you lie under oath. And regardless, if I made a statement or didn’t make a statement, that is the reason why I stood up in court and I said, when the judge asked, ‘Like, yo does anybody have anything to say before he is sentenced?’
“I stood up and I said, ‘Your honor, I’m the person who pressed the charges,’” Hough continued. “‘I would like to drop the charges. I made a huge mistake. This was a –‘ this was in court. In front of his family, in front of friends, in front of everybody. Whatever. After months of anticipation, Greta Gerwig has finally unveiled the second teaser trailer for her upcoming Barbie movie. We’ve previously seen photos of stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling rollerblading around California in their neon spandex, but now, movie lovers are getting a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming comedy. It appears the famous blonde doll and her handsome beau, Ken, will cross dimensions from their home to the “real world” on the big screen, though she remains unaware of his presence until they’ve already crossed over.
“I’m coming with ya,” the Canadian actor, in character as the blond stud declares. “Did you bring your rollerblades?” an exasperated Barbie asks, seemingly expecting to be disappointed. “I literally go nowhere without them!” Ken excitedly confirms. Elsewhere in the under-two-minute-long teaser, we also see Gosling face off against Simu Liu, who previously admitted to painfully waxing his entire body for the part. On top of that, fans will also witness the acting debut of pop sensation Dua Lipa, who plays a mermaid.
Since the preview arrived on Tuesday (April 4) morning, social media has been sharing plenty of thoughts, many of them about the La La Land actor specifically. “Me in the theatre watching ‘Barbie’ every time Ryan Gosling’s Ken says anything,” one troll wrote alongside a video of The Office cast snickering during a blooper on set. “He looks like Grandpa Ken,” another person chimed in. When the film’s casting was first announced there was some online discourse regarding the 42-year-old’s age, and if he was the best choice for the part.
“The Ken’s are just not Kenning for me, I’m sorry,” someone else tweeted. “But I’ll be seated regardless.” No matter what people think of the male lead, they’re certainly pleased with Robbie’s casting as the beloved blonde beauty. The second teaser trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie has been released. It should lay to rest any doubts that viewers may have had about the movie. The 2-minute-long teaser is campy, chaotic, and fun in all the right ways. The film was officially announced several years ago. Margot Robbie stars in the film and was attached before Barbie had even found its director. In Barbie, the titular character will go on a journey of self-discovery, leaving her home for the real world. The trailer tells us little about why she must leave. The extremely short film synopsis simply alleges it is because she is “less than perfect.”
The production of Barbie took quite some time to get the ball rolling. The idea was first presented by Universal Studios all the way back in 2009. However, production did not begin until Sony acquired the rights to the film in 2014. Rumors swirled about the actresses in negotiations for the lead role. Both Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway supposedly eyed the part. When Sony failed to put Barbie into production, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to it. Shortly after, Margot Robbie was announced as both the lead actor and producer. Additionally, WB announced Greta Gerwig had stepped into the role of director. Noah Baumbach acts as screenwriter for the film, who many may know as the writer of the divorce drama, Marriage Story, starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. Over the months that followed, the film added an almost staggering number of top actors and actresses.
In the newest trailer for Barbie, we are introduced to the neon-tinged world of the famous Mattel doll. It opens on a beach with pastel pink sand as a chorus of different Barbies say hello to one another. We see two Kens vie for the attention of Robbie’s character before she takes off in her car. She waves at passers by, hilariously taking her hands off of the wheel of her car completely. Eventually, Barbie and Ken are seen leaving their home for the real world. The end of the trailer shows off Noah Baumbach’s comedic writing chops as two Kens argue on the beach, vowing to “beach each other off.”
Humorous and lights, Barbie looks like it is going to be the perfect summer movie. It boasts an all-star cast, with Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, and Will Ferrell taking on lead roles, among many others. Dua Lipa debuts as a Barbie you never knew you wanted. The “Levitating” singer takes on her first acting role in the new movie based on the famous Mattel doll. The film, simply called Barbie, is directed by Greta Gerwig. The director is best known for her work on the recent films, Lady Bird and Little Women. Both were nominated for Academy Awards. As such, it’s unlikely that we will be looking at a straightforward film about living dolls. The first teaser didn’t provide much information, but it did give us a look into the neon world created for the movie.
For those unfamiliar with her previous work, Dua Lipa is a British singer, songwriter, and model. Dua’s career began in 2015 when she signed a contract with Warner Bros. Records and released her debut single “New Love.” Then, in 2016, she had a breakthrough hit with “Be the One”. Her debut album was released the following year, featuring the viral single “New Rules.” Dua has won multiple awards for her music, including two Grammy Awards. Her second album, Future Nostalgia, was released in 2020. It gave birth to the chart-topping hits “Levitating” and “Don’t Start Now.” Subsequently, it seems that Dua is making her way into acting.
In a tweet from the official Barbie movie account, character posters introducing the cast were shared. “Meet our Barbies and Kens,” the account says in the tweet. The post includes pictures of cast members like Margot Robbie, who plays the titular character. Other cast members with their own posters were Kingsley Ben-Adir, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Ana Cruz Kayne, Scott Evans, Sharon Rooney, Emerald Fennell, and of course, Dua Lipa herself.
In her poster, Dua appears as a blue-haired mermaid Barbie adorned in pearls and shells. Fans had previously speculated that the pop star would appear in the film, and now it seems they were correct. The tweet gives little more information about her part in the film. Still, it offers fans the confirmation they’ve been looking for. Dua definitely delivers in her music, but how will she fare in her new role as an actress? Overall, we’ll have to wait until Barbie releases on July 21 to find out.

As far as why Kid Cudi isn’t in Greta Gerwig’s ode to the most popular girls’ toy of the past 60 years, it’s probably just because he’s looking extremely busy for the remainder of the year. After musing that he might be considering retirement, he got super productive, finishing up an album, plotting a world tour for next year, and booking a string of festival appearances including HARD Summer and the Hive Festival. And that’s just music!
