Timbaland & Swizz Beatz Win Cultural Influence Award, “Verzuz” To Return: “We’re Gonna Come Back Strong”

The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards were another success, which is no surprise given the fact that it has been airing for 17 years. So many fantastic artists and producers were in the house for the evening and there were plenty of great moments throughout it. One of which was Timbaland and Swizz Beatz taking the hardware for the Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award. They are the third winners of it, with it debuting back in 2021. It is great recognition for these two iconic producers who have been pushing hip-hop music forward for decades now. Both gave their sincerest thanks to the fans during their speeches.

Billboard shared some quotables from Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. Timb got things started, “I always dreamed I’d be on stage accepting an award about hip-hop. Doing music back in Virginia, I never thought I’d make it, but I’m here.” However, besides being appreciative and humble about the win, he had more to share. “Me and my brother created something special, and it ain’t over. Black-owned, Verzuz, me and Swizz Beatz. I’m glad to share this with my brother.”

Drake And 21 Savage’s “Her Loss” Takes Home Album Of The Year At BET Hip-Hop Awards

The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards took place last night (October 10) at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Plenty of of the genre’s hottest artists were up to win some major awards. One category that everyone would like to win is the coveted Album of the Year honor. The albums that were nominated are as follows: GloRilla’s Anyways, Life’s Great…, Coi Leray’s COI, DJ Khaled’s GOD DID, Metro Boomin’s HEROES & VILLAINS, Jack Harlow’s Jackman., Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape and Megan Thee Stallion’s Traumazine. However, we did not mention one more. That would be Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss.

The duo would be selected as the winners of this prestigious award. To some, it might be a tad bit shocking, though. You can make the argument for Metro Boomin’s project. So many hits landed on it and it is when his takeover started. While the radio-friendly hits were not what Jack Harlow was shooting for, it might be the most lyrically dense and consistently thematic record out of all the nominees. However, you cannot deny that Drake and 21 Savage did their thing (pun intended) with Her Loss.

It was a commercial success, with XXL saying it sold 404,000 units first week. To put that in perspective, Metro’s sold 185,000. Furthermore, the amount of major songs here is ridiculous. “Rich Flex” took the internet by storm for better or worse. Then you also have “Major Distribution,” “P***y & Millions,” “Circo Loco,” and more. For the icing on the cake, it has never left the Billboard 200 Chart. It is at 48 weeks and counting and is in the top 25 still.

Will Smith 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards Performance Would’ve Happened If Fat Joe Had His Way

Today (October 10), the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards will be airing after filming took place in Atlanta last week. We got a look at what some of our favourite stars wore on the red carpet already, but when it comes to what went down inside, there’s still much to be seen on the small screen this evening. Fat Joe was tapped to host the annual ceremony, and ahead of its premiere, he spoke with PEOPLE about the artist he desperately wanted to see perform, but unfortunately couldn’t secure.

“You know who I didn’t successfully get was Will Smith,” the Terror Squad lyricist confessed, revealing that his hope was to have the actor do a hip-hop 50 tribute. “I was really trying to get Will Smith to come out and do ‘Summer Time’. He’s filming ‘Bad Boys,’ but we tried. We try to pull off a miracle if we can. We try to pull a cloud out of the sky,” Joe additionally noted.

As for what viewers can expect to see, increased confidence from the 53-year-old is on the list. This marks his second year MCing the event, which he’s long been preparing for. “I always think back to being in junior high and doing the talent shows and then Apollo Theater Amateur Night and it all leads to this. And so it’s an honour for me,” Joe revealed. He also shared that we’ll see a total of eight outfit changes throughout the evening in an attempt to keep up with the notoriously stylish women of rap.

He may not have been able to come through for the annual BET Hip Hop Awards, but that doesn’t mean Will Smith isn’t still bringing new contributions to the genre. Sukihana Crawls On The Floor And Twerks At The VMAs

Sukihana is someone who has become a bit controversial in the world of music. Overall, she is someone who has made a name for herself as a television star. Last night, there was no shortage of female artists being honored at the MTV Video Music Awards. Artists like Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and more were given their flowers. Furthermore, a plethora of other artists were invited to watch the proceedings and just have a good time. One of those people was none other than Sukihana. However, Sukihana’s antics on the carpet definitely gave way to some controversy. In her first video, she can be seen crawling on the floor and twerking. Some people felt this was disrespectful to the event and that she should have taken it more seriously. Additionally, some people pointed out that this wasn’t the red carpet and that she had to have been somewhere else. Although, a follow-up post revealed that she was on the secondary carpet of the event. We know this because she got to link up with Chloe Bailey and a plethora of others.

Cardi B was at the MTV Video Music Awards last night. Overall, she has become a staple of the event in recent years. However, in 2023, she was there for a multitude of reasons. Among them was the fact that she has a new song out with none other than Megan Thee Stallion. This song is called “Bongos,” and during the festivities last night, she got to perform it for the very first time. Overall, the performance went extremely well, and fans were mesmerized by the visuals that they were seeing.

One person who enjoyed the performance quite a bit was none other than her husband, Offset. The two have been a power couple in hip-hop, even if there have been a few controversies here and there. The former Migos rapper was in the crowd dancing to the performance and having a great time. Although it was the festivities in the bathroom that probably got Offset the most excited. Throughout the clip, Cardi B trolls bathroom-goers by moaning and talking in a high-pitched voice. At one point, someone comes into the bathroom and all they can do is laugh. Considering the situation, that is probably the appropriate response. The video was eventually posted to Cardi’s Instagram story, and it has since been making the rounds online. If one thing is for sure, however, it is that the VMAs were one huge party last night.

Overall, there were a ton of great performances and some phenomenal award winners. Moreover, Nicki Minaj did a great job hosting the event as she gave us a ton of amazing music. Regardless of how you may feel about this new single, there is no doubt that it performs well to an audience.

Unfortunately, Megan Thee Stallion was going viral last night for other reasons. In clips that began circulating on Twitter, she could be seen having an animated conversation with Justin Timberlake. Fans immediately made the claim that they had some sort of argument. There was a sense of confusion on social media as fans couldn’t believe what might be occurring. However, some well-timed community notes eventually revealed what truly happened.

As Variety reports, Meg was simply extremely excited to meet Justin. She has always been a big fan, and she wasn’t super stoked about the circumstances in which they were meeting for the first time. “He said, ‘It’s so nice to meet you,’ and she said, ‘No, no this don’t count, this don’t count. We gotta meet proper,’” a source revealed to the publication. “It was very cute.” A second witness followed this up by saying the exact same thing. Needless to say, this was all a total misunderstanding.

It was a big night for Justin Timberlake as well considering he got to reunite with NSYNC for a performance. This brought forth a ton of late 90s and early 2000s nostalgia. Nicki Minaj Will Reprise Role As Host And Performer At VMAs

Last year, Nicki Minaj had a pretty big night at the VMAs. The beloved rap star and hitmaker was receiving the coveted Video Vanguard award and as a result, delivered a show-stopping melody of some of her most well-known songs. But she also served as an MC of sorts taking over some of the duties that would normally be saved for a host. She shared those duties with LL Cool J and Jack Harlow but apparently, Minaj did such a great job that she’s being invited back.

Once again at this year’s VMAs which take place next week, Nicki Minaj will be serving double duty as host and performer. This time around she’ll be performing her new single “Last Time I Saw You” which has been out for just over a week and already has almost 9 million streams on Spotify. This year, she will also be undertaking MC duties all on her own. “Minaj will announce the show’s star-studded lineup of performers, presenters, and winners,” the announcement of her role reads. As usual, the VMAs have a roster of performers that includes many of the biggest stars in the music industry. The show takes place on September 8 at 8 pm EST.

Nicki Minaj has also been collecting major streaming milestones recently. Her track “Seeing Green” just hit 100 million streams on Spotify. The track became her 75th to hit the major milestone. That came just a week after she became the first female rapper to reach 31 billion total Spotify streams across her entire discography.

Nicki Minaj is gearing up to release her first new album since 2018. Pink Friday 2 is scheduled for later this year. Nicki has continued the campaign towards its release by sharing album covers for it, though she didn’t share which one was the official artwork. A$AP Rocky Accepts Virgil Abloh Award From HFR

There is more reason to celebrate for A$AP Rocky and Rihanna. The Harlem native could not help but be thankful for a very flattering award he picked up the other night. Flacko was called to attend HFR’s (Harlem’s Fashion Row) 16th Annual Fashion Show & Style Awards on September 5. The ceremony took the time to honor all of the stylistic pioneers of today back in New York. It was also there to recognize the 50th anniversary of hip-hop music.

According to Vibe, Kelly Rowland was also in attendance. She scooped up possibly the biggest award of the night, the Fashion Icon Of The Year. The HFR website lists all of the other five categories. Those included, Stylists Of The Year, Hip Hop Trailblazer Award, Editor Of The Year, Designer Of The Year, and last but not least, the Virgil Abloh Award. TMZ got footage of A$AP Rocky’s acceptance speech and he gave the late great designer and artist all of the praise.

Rocky told the crowd a story of when Virgil began to recognize the A$AP Mob. He says, “Virgil discovered us, A$AP, us as a bunch of kids before I got my record deal.” Furthermore, he goes on to tell how Virgil helped him with the creative process behind his breakout album LONG.LIVE.A$AP. It is a nice moment to see the rapper take this award since the inspiration is strong still to this day. Now, he gets to take home a precious award that remembers a truly great legacy. Additionally, it symbolizes the great relationship Rocky and Abloh shared.

Diddy’s Appearance At The 2023 MTV VMAs Will Include A Special Award And Performance

Many of the year’s biggest award shows unfold in the spring and summer months. Still, just before fall comes, the MTV Video Music Awards are slated on the schedule. The 2023 ceremony is set to take place on September 12. Both Lil Wayne and Doja Cat have already been named as performers. They each just shared their “Kat Food” and “Demons” singles respectively, but we’re curious to see what songs they’ll bring to the stage later this month. In addition to that, Diddy was also confirmed as an act who will be taking the stage next week.

“IT’S OFFICIAL, the hip-hop legend @Diddy is your 2023 #VMA Global Icon Award Recipient!!!” the award show’s official Twitter account announced on Tuesday (September 5) morning. Along with that big news, they confirmed that the New York native will be putting on a rousing performance either before or after he’s given his flowers. “Tune in to @MTV on September 12 to see him accept the award AND perform,” their message concluded.

Diddy is Set to Receive His Flowers at the 2023 MTV VMAs

The latest tracks we’ve heard from Diddy have been two collaborations. There’s “Mandem” with Giggs, as well as “Act Bad” in tandem with the City Girls and Fabolous. It’s possible that either of those could be his performance piece of choice for the VMAs. We’re placing our bets on the latter as it was declared the Song of the Summer by some music lovers. Seeing as he’s confirmed to have new heat on the way soon, it’s possible that Sean Combs could use his big televised moment to debut something totally new too.
