Grammys 2024 Nominees: A Look At Best Melodic Rap Performance

The nominations for the 2024 Grammys have been announced, and we’re looking at the choices for Best Melodic Rap Performance. The category was created to recognize artists who creatively blended rapping and singing in their music. It has seen several name changes throughout the years, most notably in 2018 and once again in 2020. This resulted from the constantly evolving genre of rap and how many elements have blended with it across the years. This year’s nominees, like Drake and Burna Boy, often use sung vocals, whereas people like J.Cole and 21 Savage have a rap-centric approach to this category. 21 Savage has two nominations in this one, giving him a greater chance of winning.

“Sittin’ On Top Of The World” – Burna Boy Feat. 21 Savage

This is the first of two 2024 Grammy nominations in this category for 21 Savage. Both of his nominations come from collaborations, and they are quite different. This shows how much range he’s gained as an artist and continues expanding his audience through collaborations like this. “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” is the lead single for Burna Boy’s critically and commercially successful album I Told Them… It shows 21 rapping about a relationship while Burna Boy takes on the melodic sung elements of the track. The production is not the type typically associated with either artist since it’s not trap or afrobeats. Instead, it’s a more boom-bap-based sound, but both artists sound comfortable on it. The song went No. 1 on the UK Afrobeats Singles chart and No. 1 on the US Rhythmic chart.

“Attention” – Doja Cat

Doja Cat has blended rapping and singing in her music throughout her career. Her chart-topping multi-platinum-selling single “Say So” introduced many listeners to how she could combine both. The second verse on the song is rapped and contrasts the singing of the first verse. However, that song was more pop-centric, and “Attention” leans much more heavily into a rap-based atmosphere.

“Attention” has two rapped verses from Doja, and she sings the hook. Her rapping on the song is calculated and intricate, which pairs well with the song’s production. In 2019, Doja released a song called “Tia Tamera” that featured Rico Nasty. This was a rap song, too; however, Doja’s verse, while lyrical, was still lighthearted. “Attention” has a direct approach and finds her addressing people’s criticisms of her life and music.

“Spin Bout U” – Drake & 21 Savage

This Grammy 2024 nominee is the second track from Drake & 21 Savage’s collab album, Her Loss. The song is one of their most popular, reaching the top 10 on several Billboard charts and accumulating over 266 million streams. Drake built his career around balancing rapping and singing, finding success when he does either. Meanwhile, 21 is fairly new to including melodic elements in his music. “Mr. Right Now,” from his 2020 album Savage Mode II, was one of his most popular attempts, and interestingly enough, that track featured Drake. “Spin Bout U” showcases 21 using a rap flow while Drake sings the hook. The song is one of the slower-paced ones from their collaborative album and gives concert attendees at their joint tour a moment to rest from the higher-energy tracks.

“All My Life” – Lil Durk Feat. J. Cole

This is one of the most recently released Grammy 2024 nominees. The Grammys are known for their creative, collaborative performances the night the awards air, and this song is right on par with them. Over the past few years, J. Cole has worked with some surprising artists ranging from Young Thug to Korean rapper j-hope of BTS fame. His collaboration with Lil Durk was completely unexpected and then welcomed by fans of both artists.

On the track, Lil Durk handles the melodic singing while Cole delivers a heartfelt verse. Listeners praised the track for the comforting feeling it had, a large departure from the type of music they would associate with Lil Durk. The track hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and US Rhythmic charts, the latter a testament to its nomination in this category.

“Low” – SZA

SZA’s “Low” comes from her critically acclaimed album SOS, which is also nominated for Album of the Year at the 2024 Grammys. It’s one of the most popular songs from the album, accumulating over 343 million plays on Spotify and was certified platinum by the RIAA.

This song is a standout from the album due to the trap-like production and how SZA displayed a variety of vocal delivery techniques. SZA uses more straightforward rapping on other tracks on SOS, but on this one, she prioritizes singing and uses a rap-sung flow at moments, too. The track also features ad-libs from Travis Scott but no verses from him. “Low” is the type of song this category was created for because it could be classified as rap and R&B.

Drake And 21 Savage Now Have The Most Streamed Collab Rap Album Over “Watch The Throne”

Drake and 21 Savage are some of the biggest hitmakers of this generation. On top of that, they may be the biggest for the hip-hop genre. This is the argument that many use for Drake to give him the greatest rapper of all time title. To some, that is certainly a hot take. Especially, when you consider the fact that a good amount will argue he is not in the upper echelon when it comes to rapping and artistry.

However, you cannot deny that Drake has plenty of iconic tracks and albums. A solid amount of those land on one of his most recent tapes, Her Loss. The 2022 project with 21 has cuts like “Rich Flex,” “P***y & Millions,” “Major Distribution,” “Spin Bout U,” and plenty of others. With songs like this, it was only a matter of time before this collaborative record broke some sort of record.

That day is today. We have just discovered that it has just become the most streamed collab rap tape ever. It passes up notable efforts such as both Savage Mode‘s, and Kids See Ghosts, among others. However, easily the biggest competition on this list is Watch The Throne by Kanye West and Jay-Z. Her Loss has 2.7 billion streams, while Ye and Jay sit at 2.6 billion. That tape is seen by quite a large sum of listeners to be the best team effort ever. This makes it all the more impressive that an album that is just a little over a year old has already moved past it. In fact, it took only 372 days to reach that mark. Congratulations to Drake and 21 Savage and everyone else involved!

What are your initial thoughts on Drake and 21 Savage now possessing the highest-streamed collaboration album of all time? Do you think this proves that Drake is bigger and better than Kanye West and Jay-Z? What tracks from Her Loss are still in your rotation? We would like to know what you have to say about all of this. Drake And 21 Savage’s “Her Loss” Takes Home Album Of The Year At BET Hip-Hop Awards

The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards took place last night (October 10) at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Plenty of of the genre’s hottest artists were up to win some major awards. One category that everyone would like to win is the coveted Album of the Year honor. The albums that were nominated are as follows: GloRilla’s Anyways, Life’s Great…, Coi Leray’s COI, DJ Khaled’s GOD DID, Metro Boomin’s HEROES & VILLAINS, Jack Harlow’s Jackman.Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape and Megan Thee Stallion’s Traumazine. However, we did not mention one more. That would be Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss.

The duo would be selected as the winners of this prestigious award. To some, it might be a tad bit shocking, though. You can make the argument for Metro Boomin’s project. So many hits landed on it and it is when his takeover started. While the radio-friendly hits were not what Jack Harlow was shooting for, it might be the most lyrically dense and consistently thematic record out of all the nominees. However, you cannot deny that Drake and 21 Savage did their thing (pun intended) with Her Loss.

Here Is Why Drake And 21 Savage Won This Award

It was a commercial success, with XXL saying it sold 404,000 units first week. To put that in perspective, Metro’s sold 185,000. Furthermore, the amount of major songs here is ridiculous. “Rich Flex” took the internet by storm for better or worse. Then you also have “Major Distribution,” “P***y & Millions,” “Circo Loco,” and more. For the icing on the cake, it has never left the Billboard 200 Chart. It is at 48 weeks and counting and is in the top 25 still.

What are your initial thoughts on Drake and 21 Savage’s album Her Loss winning Album of the Year at the BET Hip-Hop Awards? Do you think this project was deserving of the honor over the other options? Which track is your favorite off of this collaborative effort? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. 21 Savage Seems To Be Over The “Rich Flex” Memes

“Rich Flex,” the opening track to Drake and 21 Savage’s collaboration album Her Loss, has been getting plenty of internet traction. The lyrics for the song start with Drake singing, “21, can you do somethin’ for me? Can you hit a lil’ rich flex for me?” To which the meme agents are posting videos of fake Drakes getting a little more sensual than what the song intends. The internet is undefeated, making 21 Savage severely uncomfortable about how the fans are taking the song lyrics.

In a video posted on Instagram, 21 is in the middle of a set list on stage when Drake embraces the meme. He overstates the opening lines of the track, giving him “that come on babe look,” according to one Insta commenter. In response, 21 gives a look of shock that will forever be undefeated, much like the internet. 21 shakes off the trauma and gets into rapping with Drizzy once again, but we know the rapper might be scarred for life for what the fans have done to “Rich Flex.”

Drake and 21 Savage are on tour right now, so they are at the mercy of the massive crowds. And when something is in the mainstream media, Drake is always one to capitalize on good publicity. No doubt Drizzy will continue to make the same “21, can you do something for me” joke until the wheels fall off. And 21 will have to grin and bear it. Thankfully, being part of the cultural conversation is always a good thing. So even if it is something completely unintended, it’s well worth the cringe.

In other 21 Savage news, he recently hopped on a remix of Burna Boy’s “Sittin’ On Top Of The World.” He also hosted a kid’s basketball camp in Atlanta, GA, giving back to the community. On top of being the number one meme in the world, he’s touring with the most prolific rapper in history. Life is good when you’re music famous (on top of being internet famous).

Drake Tour 2023: Dates, Tickets & More

As promised, Drake is finally ready to hit the road again for his 2023 tour. In March, the “Search & Rescue” rapper announced the It’s All A Blur tour alongside his Her Loss collaborator, 21 Savage. It marks his first tour in five years since hitting the road with the Migos for the Aubrey & The Three Migos tour. However, since the tour announcement, there have been several changes to the itinerary, including re-scheduled dates and additional shows to accommodate the high demand. Nonetheless, the upcoming tour is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated events of the year. Following the announcement of new tour dates, we broke down everything you need to know about Drake and 21 Savage’s 2023 tour, including cities, dates, and more.

Where Will Drake Perform On The 2023 Tour?

Drake’s forthcoming tour will solely serve the North American market, for now. Due to the overwhelming demand, they’ve not only added dates but rearranged their concerts. Drake and 21 Savage initially planned to launch their tour in New Orleans, followed by dates in Nashville, Houston, Dallas, Miami, and Atlanta from June 16th, 2023 to July 2nd, 2023. Now, they’ve been pushed back to September, while cities like Memphis, TN, and Colombus, OH have now been added to the tour date.

Drake Ticket Prices Lead To Class Action Lawsuit Against Ticketmaster

If you tried to cop tickets for Drake and 21 Savage’s “It’s All A Blur” tour, then you know that the prices were astronomical. Overall, people were paying upwards of $1,000 per ticket, and that was for middle-of-the-road seats. If you wanted to truly be close to the action, the prices were even higher. Consequently, fans were livid with Ticketmaster which was the only platform where you could get authentic tickets. Ticketmaster is known for its dynamic pricing protocols which are the furthest thing from consumer friendly.

Subsequently, Ticketmaster is being subjected to a class action lawsuit from LPC Avocat Inc. which is a law firm in Montreal. In a report from The Toronto Star, it was revealed that the firm was approached by a man in Montreal who paid $789.54 per ticket for the show on July 14th. However, Ticketmaster then revealed that a second show would go down on July 15th. The price for the second show with the same seats was $350 cheaper. Now, LPC Avocat Inc. is claiming that Ticketmaster was aware of the second show from the start but hid it from people so that they could make more money.

Drake & 21 Savage Tickets Were Impossible To Cop

Additionally, it has been alleged that Official Platinum seats were anything but. Now, the firm wants Ticketmaster to pay back the difference to its customers. Moreover, they want an extra $300 per person for the damages that were caused. “Ticketmaster unilaterally decides which tickets it advertises and sells as ‘Official Platinum’ based on a given event,” the lawsuit reads. “The result is that most, if not all, of the tickets advertised and sold as ‘Official Platinum’ are neither ‘premium tickets’ nor ‘some of the best seats in the house’ and are, in fact, just regular tickets sold by Ticketmaster at an artificially inflated premium in bad faith.”

Overall, this is yet another bad look for Ticketmaster. They are facing a similar lawsuit in regard to Taylor Swift’s most recent tour. The company has also been investigated by the United States Senate, which has brought even more unwanted attention. At this point, fans are fed up, and these lawsuits are living proof of that. Let us know what you think about the situation, in the comments below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for updates from the music world.
