2023 BET Hip Hop Awards’ Best Breakthrough Artist Prize Goes To Ice Spice

Ice Spice has had her perfectly manicured foot on our necks since she first blew up with “Munch (Feelin’ U)” over a year ago. At this point in her career, the 23-year-old has collaborated with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, broken countless streaming records, and graced the cover of various publications. She hardly feels like a “breakthrough” artist seeing as she’s skyrocketed to heights far above her contemporaries. However, at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards last night, that’s the prize the New York native left with.

Others nominated in the category this year include Armani White, Central Cee, and Finesse2tymes. Several women were also on the list, including Kaliii, Lola Brooke, and Sexyy Red. The final competitor for Spice is actually her good friend and upcoming tour mate, Doechii. Obviously only one of them could win, but it’s safe to say that Doja Cat will be in great company as she travels around North America to perform her new Scarlet album.

As Billboard reports, the artist taking home the most awards was Kendrick Lamar. The West Coast superstar earned trophies for hip-hop artist of the year, best live performer, lyricist of the year, and video director of the year in tandem with Dave Free. Much to our surprise, a handful of heavy hitters were on the BET snub list, including Cardi B, Burna Boy, and DJ Khaled. The Hustlers actress tied with 21 Sav for most nods, but ultimately came up empty-handed. As for the latter two, each had seven nominations that resulted in zero wins.

Last night’s BET Hip Hop Awards were full of some big moments for the music industry, though not all of them were positive. The evening’s host, Fat Joe, certainly kept us entertained with his various outfit changes, though he’s still facing backlash for mispronouncing Sexyy Red’s signature catchphrase. Sexyy Red Performs Her Biggest Hits At The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards

If you have been paying attention to the hip-hop landscape you would know that Sexxy Red is becoming a viral sensation. Her rapid growth in her fan base has been something incredible to see. It will continue to expand from here, especially after last night. The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards went down in the heart of trap rap, Atlanta, Georgia. Sexyy Red was one of the many performers at the award show and she might have had the crowd at its rowdiest. But, before we get to that, let us quickly recap how she got to this point. It really all started with her catchy ratchet hit song, “SkeeYee.”

The chorus is truly infectious in its own way. It set up the foundation for Red’s sound going forward and it continues to carry throughout the rest of her music. Of course, you cannot forget about “Pound Town 2” and “Hellcats SRTs” either. Now, she hopping on bigger artists’ songs like the “Peaches & Eggplants” remix. All of these tracks and more put her up for the Best Breakthrough Hip-Hop Artist. Unfortunately, that went to Ice Spice, but there is no shame in that. Red is here to stay.

Sexyy Red Rocks The Crowd

She proved that onstage as she played the songs that started it all. “Pound Town” was up first and “SkeeYee” wrapped things up. Sexyy Red also gave the crowd a taste of what one of her more recent songs sounds like live. The high-octane “Shake Yo Dreads” saw her joined by men shaking their dreads. What was also a great moment for the Missouri rapper was having the opening performance. According to XXL, she joined DaBaby for their remix of “Shake Sumn.” Continue to keep your ears and eyes on Sexyy Red, she is the “Female Gucci Mane.”

Kendrick Lamar Sets New Records After Winning 4 Awards At 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards

Although he wasn’t physically present, Kendrick Lamar’s aura was felt during the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards. The Compton rapper broke new records as he came out on top in four categories: Hip-Hop Artist Of The Year, Best Live Performer, Lyricist Of The Year, and Video Director Of The Year alongside Dave Free. It’s not surprising that he’d win in these categories. However, with his latest string of awards, he’s reached new milestones in his career, per Billboard.

His win in the Hip Hop Artist Of The Year category made him the first rapper to achieve this award three times. Then, in the category of Best Live Performer, he ties Jay-Z and Kanye West. Meanwhile, he continues his hot streak in the Lyricist Of The Year category with his ninth win. Through this, Kendrick Lamar continues his reign as the rapper with the most wins in the category. Finally, he and Dave Free became the first directors to achieve back-to-back wins since Hype Williams, although the famed director took home the award each year from 2009 to 2012.

While Kendrick Lamar made major strides at the awards, there were other notable wins during last night’s awards. Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss won the award for Hip-Hop Album Of The Year as well as best duo or group. Additionally, Lil Durk and J. Cole’s “All My Life” took home the awards for Best Collaboration and Impact Track. Cole has taken home the award in the latter category on three other occasions in the past.

The rapper is still riding high off of the release of 2022’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, as evidenced by his four wins in each of the categories he was nominated in. However, it seems like he might be gearing up to release some new music in the near future. Earlier this year, he and Baby Keem teased their side project with the release of “The Hillbillies.” The two are expected to co-headline Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival later this year. It’s a strong indication that they might have even more music ready to drop soon.

Drake And 21 Savage’s “Her Loss” Takes Home Album Of The Year At BET Hip-Hop Awards

The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards took place last night (October 10) at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Plenty of of the genre’s hottest artists were up to win some major awards. One category that everyone would like to win is the coveted Album of the Year honor. The albums that were nominated are as follows: GloRilla’s Anyways, Life’s Great…, Coi Leray’s COI, DJ Khaled’s GOD DID, Metro Boomin’s HEROES & VILLAINS, Jack Harlow’s Jackman.Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape and Megan Thee Stallion’s Traumazine. However, we did not mention one more. That would be Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss.

The duo would be selected as the winners of this prestigious award. To some, it might be a tad bit shocking, though. You can make the argument for Metro Boomin’s project. So many hits landed on it and it is when his takeover started. While the radio-friendly hits were not what Jack Harlow was shooting for, it might be the most lyrically dense and consistently thematic record out of all the nominees. However, you cannot deny that Drake and 21 Savage did their thing (pun intended) with Her Loss.

Here Is Why Drake And 21 Savage Won This Award

It was a commercial success, with XXL saying it sold 404,000 units first week. To put that in perspective, Metro’s sold 185,000. Furthermore, the amount of major songs here is ridiculous. “Rich Flex” took the internet by storm for better or worse. Then you also have “Major Distribution,” “P***y & Millions,” “Circo Loco,” and more. For the icing on the cake, it has never left the Billboard 200 Chart. It is at 48 weeks and counting and is in the top 25 still.

What are your initial thoughts on Drake and 21 Savage’s album Her Loss winning Album of the Year at the BET Hip-Hop Awards? Do you think this project was deserving of the honor over the other options? Which track is your favorite off of this collaborative effort? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest breaking news around Drake, 21 Savage, and the rest of the music world.
