Angela Simmons Reveals Heartbreaking Way Her Son Learned About His Dad’s Murder

During her recent appearance on Baby This Is Keke Palmer, Angela Simmons opened up about the murder of her son’s father, Sutton Tennyson. Tennyson was shot and killed outside of his Atlanta home in 2018. Prior to Tennyson’s passing, he and Simmons welcomed a son named Sutton Joseph Jr. in 2016. Unfortunately, Simmons was unable to control how the child learned about his dad’s death.

In a clip from the podcast, Simmons recalls getting a call from her son asking about the shooting. “He gets on the phone with me and he’s bawling and he’s like ‘I don’t know why he’s not here, but why would somebody shoot him?’” she explained. The next day, she learned that he’d been searching for information about his father’s passing online. “Someone murdered him?” she remembers him asking.

From there, she encouraged her son to stop looking into his father’s death, as she didn’t know what exactly he might come across. “I just hated that the internet told my son before I could tell him,” Simmons said. “I was so bothered because he got the story and the narrative from online before I could even like sit him down and have that conversation.”

The individual responsible for Tennyson’s death, Michael Williams, was sentenced to life in prison in 2022. Simmons delivered an emotional speech in court after the verdict was read. According to Simmons, the accent might be a result of spending so much time with her partner, Yo Gotti. They got together roughly two years ago after the rapper had been shooting his shot since 2015. “It’s probably my man, it’s probably the influence of my man,” she told the hosts.

But the cookie brand joined in on the fun, posting a picture of a bathtub full of Oreos on their Instagram Story and writing: “Imagine hating me and i’m just at home doing this. Boy we have a crush on Angela Simmons.” “We have a crush on you too,” Simmons wrote in her IG Story repost and reply to this meme, so it’s clear that she can laugh at herself, as well.

However, this isn’t all that Angela Simmons got cooked for on the Internet recently. The other incident involves her bedazzled gun purse at the 2024 BET Awards, which many thought wasn’t just corny, but also insensitive. Simmons apologized for taking that to the awards ceremony not once, but twice. However, even her boo Yo Gotti doubled down and supported her throughout this.

“My work with Erica Ford and my own organization that creates programs to reduce gun violence and helps those directly impacted by the pandemic, have always been about making peace a lifestyle,” Angela Simmons continued. “I ask for your understanding and forgiveness, and I hope that you can accept my sincere apology. While this incident was a misstep, I will not allow it to define my moral compass or my commitment to promoting peace and ending gun violence.”

Angela Simmons’ “Angela’s Cakes” Partners With Slutty Vegan To Debut Deep Fried Oreos

Pinky Cole-Hayes and Angela Simmons are collaborating again for the launch of a new menu item: Vegan Fried Oreos. The tasty addition, which will include Simmons’ Angela’s Cakes mix, will be available at select Slutty Vegan locations across the United States throughout the summer.

The launch, which is a limited menu item that will be available from July – September, is the second initiative between both powerhouses (with the first being Angela’s Cakes, a versatile and vegan pancake and waffle mix). That same mix, combined with oat milk, will serve as the foundation for the Oreos. The initial rollout will begin in Slutty Vegan’s New York locations. In the middle of July, the dessert will roll out to Atlanta and the rest of Slutty Vegan’s locations.

“With me being a major vegan foodie with a sweet tooth, I’m always looking to satisfy my cravings, especially when I’m traveling,” says Angela Simmons, who launched Pastry Footwear (which went on to achieve $75 million in sales). “Working with Pinky and Slutty Vegan has been amazing because she shares that same vision of bringing the tastiest vegan options to the masses.”

With names such as Ménage à Trois and Hollywood Hooker, Cole-Hayes’ Slutty Vegan restaurant has had vegans and meat lovers alike standing in line for hours to experience the juicy goodness of plant-based burgers since 2019. To date, the brand is valued at over $100 million.

“We [Slutty Vegan] are so excited about the rollout of this limited menu item. I mean, who doesn’t love fried Oreos?”, asks Pinky Cole-Hayes, owner of Slutty Vegan. “The initial rollout will start in New York and Atlanta, but don’t be surprised if you see it coming in other markets, especially with our food truck currently trekking across the country.”

Cole-Hayes is also the author of: “Eat Plants, B*tch,” a cookbook of 91 recipes (consisting of: Avocado Egg Rolls, Black Pea Cauliflower Po’Boy, Oyster Mushroom Parm and everything in between). The book was nominated for an NAACP Award for “Outstanding Literary Work” and topped Amazon’s Best Seller list!)

Simmons was criticized for her fashion choice, and tried to quiet the situation by issuing an apology video. Evidently, the reality felt that more needed to be said.

Angela Simmons posted a lengthy written apology to Instagram on July 1. She explained her reasoning for bringing out the gun purse, and acknowledged why it may not have been a great idea in retrospect. “I deeply regret that this item, which symbolizes a gun, was inappropriate and insensitive,” she wrote over a black background. “Especially given my personal and community experiences with gun violence.” She claimed that she merely intended for the purse to “amplify” her beauty, but now views the accessory as a “bad decision.”
