“Acid Rap”: Chance The Rapper On How His Iconic Mixtape Influenced Jack Harlow & Lil Uzi Vert

It sometimes feels like just yesterday when hip-hop heads all over were blasting Chance the Rapper’s “Cocoa Butter Kisses” from car windows at top volume. The uber-catchy, Vic Mensa and Twista-assisted song appears on the 30-year-old’s Acid Rap mixtape, which arrived back in 2013. In fact, this past weekend, the 14-track project celebrated its 10-year anniversary, for which Complex spoke with Chance about his past work and its undeniable influence, among other things.

“In terms of rap, like, there was not another album that had a song like ‘Chain Smoker’ on it or another album that had a song like ‘Everybody’s Something’ on it,” he told the outlet during their chat. “It was its own thing,” CTR added, though he did compare it to other huge arrivals in the same genre also released that year. Among them were Mac Miller’s Watching Movies With The Sound Off, Kanye West’s Yeezus, and Drake’s Nothing Was The Same. Additionally, J. Cole’s Born Sinner album came up in the discussion as well.

Chance the Rapper Reflects on His Influence

According to Chance, the sound he crafted on Acid Rap still holds up to this day and even continues to influence emerging artists – particularly those coming up out of the Midwest. “I think you’d be hard-pressed to find somebody that’s a year or two younger than me that wasn’t influenced by Acid Rap, even if they weren’t from [that area],” the father of two speculated. “Jack Harlow, Uzi Vert. People that are from opposite coasts and from other places still tell me, like, what the album meant to them at that time.”

Besides the most popular song, “Cocoa Butter Kisses,” Chance the Rapper’s fans have also been running up streams on titles like “Favorite Song” with Childish Gambino as well as “Lost” featuring Noname. The Chicago native connected with no shortage of collaborators for the mixtape, including Ab-Soul, Action Bronson, Saba, BJ The Chicago Kid, Nate Fox, and Lili K. Chance The Rapper Reflects On How Drug-Fueled Lifestyle Could’ve Killed Him

Chance The Rapper’s seminal mixtape Acid Rap is one of the most beloved mixtapes of the 2010s decade, whether you ask Chance fans or hip-hop heads at large. However, that era also represented a dark time for the Chicago star. Moreover, he recently spoke to Complex and reflected on his heavy drug use at the time, which he believes would’ve killed him if he continued down that path. As the project celebrates its tenth anniversary, this context sheds a dark light on an otherwise bright start to his mainstream success. As a treat to fans, he will perform an anniversary concert at Chicago’s United Center on August 19.

Still, such celebration is underscored by the 30-year-old’s reflections on his personal struggles. “I probably would have died,” Chance The Rapper remarked to the publication. “Definitely, the way that I was living at that time. I had everything in excess. Right after I dropped the project, I went on a few tours where I really didn’t make any money. Then I went on my first tour, my headlining tour, where I made some money.”

Chance The Rapper Reflects On His Heavy Drug Use

After that monetary boost, the “Same Drugs” artist said that he went through a lot of changes in his personal life. Despite his burgeoning success, he said that drugs followed him along the way. “I went and rented a crib,” he explained. “This is my first time living outside of my parents’ house in another city and having money and doing a lot of drugs.” From his perspective, substance dependency made him a “different” and also “lesser” person than he is today. Later on in the interview, he theorized what his place in hip-hop would be if he hadn’t had an awakening.

“If I hadn’t had my spirit tugged on- literally- and a calling to become a better version of myself, then I would have died for sure,” Chance expressed. “Then I would just be the representative of acid and I’m so much more.” If you want to read Complex‘s full interview with the Coloring Book star, check it out here. Chance The Rapper Will Celebrate The Tenth Anniversary Of ‘Acid Rap’ With A Show In Chicago Alongside Saba

Chance The Rapper is making quite a lot of headlines lately for his new collaboration with Vic Mensa and G-Eazy for “Swish” as well as for getting enthusiastically twerked on at a carnival in a viral video. Either way, it looks like he’s keeping up the momentum with even more news.

Today (April 25), the performer announced that he’ll be celebrating ten years of his beloved album Acid Rap — which features hits like “Cocoa Butter Kisses” and “Favorite Song” — with a show in Chicago at the United Center with his collaborator Saba as support. He is also releasing the track “Juice” in its original format, coming Sunday, April 30.

In 2019, he discussed what that record meant to him in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “When I first started working on [The Big Day], the concept, the theme,” he explained, “we have school, we have acid, we have faith and family, and the fourth one — really the first one — the concept was ‘Best Album Of All Time.’ And that’s not really a good concept to make an album. It gives you no direction.” He continued, “To me, personally, the best album of all time … Acid Rap.”
