Oakstop Alliance & Homeboy Sandman Deliver New Album, “Royalty Summit”

Oakland-based nonprofit Oakstop Alliance has released a new compilation album titled Royalty Summit. Moreover, Homeboy Sandman curated that summit with the nonprofit to showcase the region’s best MCs, producers, and artists. As such, the album delivers soulful but summery beats, a lot of charisma, and eccentric flows and deliveries. They’re similar to Sandman’s last single, “Get Yours.”

However, it’s not like Oakland missed out on great artistry before. Many big names call the city their home such as Kehlani, Raphal Saadiq, Kamaiyah, Fantastic Negrito, and so many others. Still, the city’s always wanted to keep pushing things even further to uplift local artists. So, Oakstop Alliance created the Oakland Resident initiative to give more visibility to the area’s local talent.

Furthermore, Royalty Summit is the campaign’s first release. The organization’s executive director, Damon Johnson, pitched the idea to Homeboy Sandman as the latter planned his There In Spirit West Coast tour run. Moreover, they recorded the album’s 12 tracks over three days with over 20 local artists. Despite Homeboy being from Queens, the artistry on display from Oakland locals like Tone Oliver and Simago makes the city’s sound distinctively electrifying.

2KBaby Releases Weezy-Inspired Mixtape, “Sorry 4 The Hate”

Louisville rapper 2KBaby is back with a new mixtape, Sorry 4 The Hate. Moreover, it’s inspired by Lil Wayne’s classic mixtape Sorry 4 the Wait, on which he rapped over popular beats before Tha Carter IV. Also, it even has the same style of cover art and color pallet. Therefore, that’s exactly what the Kentucky native delivers on this mixtape. His last single “Haunt Me” with Kofi displayed his melodic sensibilities, but he’s not afraid to go hard here, too.

“I’m just tryn go down as of the GOATSs in this s**t,” 2KBaby wrote via Instagram. “[Lil Wayne] been inspiring n***as as long as I can remember & at the same time paving the way for artists to do a lot of the s**t we do today. “Sorry 4 the Wait” was the first Remixtape I got put on 2 & “Sorry 4 the Wait II” was the last. So I thought I’d try to make my own Remixtape of the hottest 2022 songs on the chart rn. Until I see it ain’t no artist in the game tht can fwm on this tip.”

Meanwhile, given his criticism of hits like “pushin p,” it’s unsurprising to see 2KBaby looking for some smoke. Still, he backs it up, with creative reinventions of everything from Metro Boomin to Taylor Swift. Moreover, his voice remains dynamic and charismatic, with passionate wails and creative inflections. Still, he spits bars over beats from Yeat, Drake & 21 Savage, and Jack Harlow.

Tyler, The Creator Reveals His Top 12 Songs Of 2022

Tyler, The Creator is known to be a man of quite eclectic taste. From his vintage car obsession to his collection of unique jewelry, the 31-year-old has never been afraid to show off his style.

His musical inspiration is no different, coming in the form of various different artists and genres.

On Tuesday (December 20), the “See You Again” rapper took to his Twitter account to share his favorite songs of the year. Although, not all of them were actually released in 2022. Some of them dropped last year and in 2020. Obviously, Tyler doesn’t abide by strict rules when creating his lists.

Regardless, his twelve favorite songs of 2022 include a diverse range of genres and only a few rap songs. In order to fit all of his inclusions into the 280-character-limits of a tweet, he obviously had to use some short forms.

Below is an official list of the songs he loved this year:

As you can see, the majority of his list consists of genres like alternative, R&B and retro pop. Additionally, he gives himself props for one of his guest verses on his track with Pharrell and 21 Savage, one of only a few he did this year.

Shortly after tweeting his list, a fan quickly replied to inquire about a notably absent song that Tyler expressed his love for earlier in the year: Omar Apollo’s Neptunes-produced “Tamagotchi.”

The IGOR artist subsequently made sure to include it in his list. “DAWG I KNEW IT WAS A SONG I FORGOT WHEN I MADE THIS MENTAL LIST. THE BRIDGE ON THAT IS A 10,” he says.

It’s certainly always interesting to hear what our favorite artists have been listening to and are inspired by.

Fetty Wap Drops “Sweet Yamz” Remix With Ronald Isley & Charlie Wilson

One of the year’s last big viral hits has gotten yet another remix. Fetty Wap recruited soul legend Ronald Isley and Charlie Wilson for another remix of “Sweet Yamz.” While the last one featured Wiz Khalifa, this one is supercharged with incredible soul harmonies and vocal runs. Moreover, having such superstars on the remix helps accentuate the song’s vintage tone and instrumentation. It sounds like an ’80s-tinged soul track with some impassioned ad-libs here and there to give it extra energy.

These new versions of “Sweet Yamz” definitely feed into that positivity. It’s a lustful, urgent, yet charming and fun song whose vitality is no surprise. Moreover, the chorus melody is incredibly catchy, and the lyrics are simple enough to get stuck in your head. Meanwhile, the sheer vocal power on display on this song is quite impressive. The Jersey rapper switches between high and low registers with ease, and his potent voice conveys a lot of emotion. Also, this is his first solo material since 2021’s “First Day Out.”

Although Wap does great here, Wilson’s dominant screams and runs elevate the chorus. In addition, he gets cheeky in his verses, with some food references to convey his hunger for his partner. However, Ronald Isley steals the show at the very end, partly because he sounds eerily similar to Don Toliver (or rather, Don sounds like Isley). His higher register makes for a more animated performances, and his food references are even funnier and more outlandish.

Additionally, these hot songs come amid a tough legal battle for Fetty Wap as he’s incarcerated on drug charges. Last October, he spoke from jail and said that he was keeping his head high despite the controversy.

2G.Kaash Taps Kodak Black For “Pushin For Love”

2G.Kaash just recruited Kodak Black for a new single titled “Pushin for Love,” and they demonstrate great chemistry. Yak signed the Dallas, Texas rapper last February to his Sniper Gang label, in partnership with Atlantic Records. While the Florida rapper has been criticized for signing “crash dummies” to his label, we hope that such accusations don’t turn true for Kaash. It would be a waste of the talent and chemistry on display on this track.

Previously, Kaash released “Walk Down” when he beat a murder charge in May of last year. Moreover, the controversy around his case tacked with new music grew some buzz around his profile. Since then, he’s kept it low-key with a couple of singles and features. Now, it seems he’s gearing up for bigger and better things with his label boss by his side.

However, that’s not to say that Kaash doesn’t come through with a lot of personality, character, and identity on this track. In fact, his passionate singing and introspective lyrics might remind listeners of some of Juice WRLD’s material. Although the vocal tones are similar, the production is more inspired by the melodic, emotive street rap making waves today. Also, it’s a space that Kodak Black himself does very well in on the single, in contrast to recent verses. Moreover, songs like Doodie Loo’s murderous “ISTG, Pt. 2” pair nicely with “Pushin for Love” to show Yak’s range.

The Alchemist Serves Up “Sandwich” Compilation

The Alchemist may well be producer of the year, but if you’ve been following hip-hop for the past few decades, you know that’s not uncommon. He’s just released The Alchemist Sandwich, a compilation of his Lunch Meat and Bread EPs from back in 2018. However, he’s also graced fans with two new tracks. Furthermore, these are “Big Syke” with Boldy James and Meyhem Lauren and “Clip In A Tray” with ScHoolboy Q.

Al is known as one of the greatest producers to ever touch a studio, and in the very top tier of producers working today. Still, much of his best work is collaborative, pulling the top tier of MCs together. His last collab project was The Elephant Man’s Bones with Roc Marciano, which dropped back in August. Moreover, this Sandwich compilation features some of the game’s best. Action Bronson, Westside Gunn, Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, Earl Sweatshirt, Black Thought, Styles P, and Roc Marciano appear.

Meanwhile, Al’s production on these old tracks sounds as fresh, creative, and inventive as ever. Still, “Big Syke” has his trademarks: lumbering bass, creative sample loops, filtered production, glistening melodies, and a soulful touch. Conversely, Boldy and Meyhem float effortlessly over the instrumental, and it’s a treat to hear Q match with Uncle Al on “Clip In A Tray.” In fact, his aggressive flow fits like a glove on the California producer’s deep beats. Moreover, it’s been great to see Al working with other rappers apart from his standard cohort, like MIKE and Wiki’s One More EP.

$UICIDEBOY$ & Germ Finally Release “DIRTIESTNASTIEST$UICIDE”

$UICIDEBOY$ and Germ have returned with their new EP, DIRTIESTNASTIEST$UICIDE, a no-frills collection of distorted phonk, trap, and horrorcore. It marks their third collaborative EP and their first in five years, following DIRTYNASTY$UICIDE in 2016 and DIRTIERNA$TIER$UICIDE in 2017. However, they haven’t kept quiet, with $UICIDEBOY$ dropping Sing Me A Lullaby, My Sweet Temptation this year. As expected, it’s a consistent and concise tracklist with a lot of aggression, distortion, but also charisma.

Moreover, that charisma comes through in their animated delivery, passionate vocal runs, and relentless flows. Still, the lyrical topics that the New Orleans duo plays with in their music are quite dark. Rejecting religion, suicidal ideation, depression, and rough upbringings are some examples. A lot of that energy manifests into amped-up bangers on this EP, much like Germ’s The Hijinx Tape.

Also, this release follows an incredibly successful year for “boys” Ruby and $crim, the latter of which produced DIRTIESTNASTIEST$UICIDE entirely. They are the 27th most streamed artist of 2022 in all genres, according to HITS magazine. In addition, their 2022 album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rap Album chart.

Meanwhile, the massive success hasn’t strayed them from their Memphis-influences roots. DIRTIESTNASTIEST$UICIDE is heavily sunken into that classic horrorcore sound, with bells and distorted bass and everything. It keeps a pretty quick pace, too, with most tracks keeping a very upbeat tempo and swing. Overall, this EP draws its appeal by how they’re able to make such a dark set of elements sound so fun. Furthermore, there’s a rawness to this album that sets it apart from the duo’s more atmospheric or varied work recently. “My Swisher Sweet, But My Sig Sauer” is a great example of that hype.

Smoke DZA & Curren$y Deliver “Park Bench Blues”

Despite releasing a solid 8-track project back in October titled 10,000 HRS, this New York rapper had plenty more hours to put in this year. Smoke DZA has returned with a new single “Park Bench Blues” featuring New Orleans’ Curren$y. The two are frequent collaborators; the last track they gave us was “Wish Upon A Star” off of 10,000 HRS. On this new song, both rappers ride over an aloof flute sample topped with hard drums to match.

For those unfamiliar with DZA’s work, we’d recommend projects from this year like Mood Swings with Real Bad Man. There, he displays his penchant for hazy flows, evocative descriptions, and elaborate rhyme schemes. Also, he tends to choose different production styles for different tracks. The 38-year-old sounds just as fitting on “Park Bench Blues”‘s trap beat as he does on drumless beats.

Furthermore, this track is a compelling synthesis of old-school sample work and more contemporary and atmospheric trap production. Both elements are minimal and raw in the mix, with neither overpowering the other. The melodic woodwind loop doesn’t change, but it’s pleasing enough to the ear to stick around. Moreover, it contrasts wonderfully with the deep bass that kicks in with Curren$y’s verse. Additionally, the snares and minimal hi-hats are incredibly sharp, with tones that cut through the rest of the track.

Meanwhile, Smoke DZA and Curren$y deliver some chilled-out verses that cycle through street topics. The New Orleans native comes through with slightly more aggressive energy, as his flows and rhymes evolve and morph into each other. DZA, on the other hand, delivers some vivid weed bars, a more measured flow, and direct punchlines. “Catching packages like Odell” is one of a few gems sprinkled in the track. With a new collaborative album with Big K.R.I.T., Girl Talk, and Wiz Khalifa on the way, we’re sure to get more of those.

Rich The Kid Has “No More Friends” On New Single

Atlanta’s own Rich the Kid is back with a new single, “No More Friends.” Fans of his work will likely recognize his fast flows and minimal beat selection with an updated flair. Moreover, the track will appear on his upcoming album, Life’s a Gamble. Also, the track comes after “Motion,” which he released jointly with the announcement that he’s inked a deal with RCA Records.

Such moves have boosted Rich’s career, who hadn’t dropped new solo music since 2021. His output that year included the short project Lucky 7 and his collaboration with Lil Wayne, Trust Fund Babies. Still, a year’s gap between releases is still consistent enough to dismiss any claims of falling off. However, it seems that the Atlanta-raised rapper has found new life with RCA, as he excitedly shared.

“They didn’t believe in me @rcarecords DID,” the 30-year-old wrote via an Instagram post. “NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE best labels in the world Rich Forever X RCA, thank you to my team @bystormpitts everyone who helped make this happen.”

Instrumentally, the short track takes a more psychedelic tone that the Kid’s previous output thanks to the synth tones. They have a lot of atmosphere to them, and their high pitch and fragile tone are a nice deviation from his usually minimal melodies. This track feels a little more expansive as a result, with the simple drum pattern keeping his flow and rhymes in check.

As far as the lyrical content, the “New Freezer” MC wants more money, more success, but no more friends. Much of the track is dedicated to those flexes, whether about wealth or women, and it’s mostly framed around Rich as an individual. There aren’t many references to his circle, and that omission only adds to the track’s themes.

Bun B &Statik Selektah Release “Trillstatik 2”

Two hip-hop heavy-hitters from different scenes have joined forces once again. Bun B and Statik Selektah have teamed up for their latest collaborative project, Trillstatik 2. Along with Bun’s Houston drawl and charisma and Statik’s classy East Coast production, there’s a host of amazing features. Some have returned from their first album together, like Big K.R.I.T, Smoke DZA, Haile Supreme, Termanology, and Paul Wall. Also, there are new exciting names like Boldy James, Dave East, Styles P, 38 Spesh, and Papoose.

While this release is surely exciting and successful for the Houston icon, it’s also a time of sad reminiscence. Recently, Bun B posted on Instagram on the 15-year anniversary of his partner Pimp C’s tragic passing. He wrote a touching message for his fellow UGK star, acknowledging how making music has been different for him ever since.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t feel the loss,” he expressed. “I just find better ways to cope with it. Missed and loved but appreciated for the time we did have with you. Your spirit lives on in your music and your legacy lives on through your kids. The trillest ever born. They’ll never be another. Love you bro. And it’s still UGK For Life! #LongLiveThePimp.

“I haven’t really enjoyed making music since Pimp passed away,” he confessed to HipHopDX earlier this year. “And so now that I get to make music with friends and I’m not under any contractual obligation, I make music because I want to not because I have to, so it’s a different experience for me. For me, it just has to be fun or I’m not going to do it. I just don’t want to do it.”

Meanwhile, the fun and passion really comes through on Trillstatik 2. For example, the beats are lush and structured to perfection, with Statik slowing down his New York sound just a bit for Bun’s flow. The variety of guests on the project also makes it feel like a dynamic listen. However, maybe the most mind-blowing part about this album is that it was recorded and streamed live from scratch on December 7th. What’s more is that Bun B teases a third installment on the very last track.

Also, you’ll probably recognize a few great samples on this record that you’ve heard on other gems this year. For example, “In My Hand” has the same sample as redveil’s “pg baby” from this year’s excellent learn 2 swim. Moreover, on the lyrical end, Bun B’s as sharp as ever. He’s demonstrated his evergreen skill on other cuts like this year’s “BULLETZ AND BROKEN GLASS” with RJ Payne and fellow legend Ice-T.
