Big Sean’s Verse On “Mercy” Is More Impressive Than You Think

Big Sean was already a crossover star when the GOOD Music compilation Cruel Summer dropped in 2012. That being said, the comp’s lead singles bolstered his stardom. He had the opening verses on both “Mercy” and “Clique,” and held his own against the likes of Pusha T, 2 Chainz and JAY-Z. The debate as to who had the best verse on “Mercy” was a recent talking on The Bigger Picture podcast. 2 Chainz was the popular answer, but Big Sean decided to jump in the comment section of the pod and provide some revelatory information.

The rapper claimed that he freestyled his “Mercy” verse before anybody else got on the song. “I did the verse first n everybody wrote theirs after me,” he wrote. “I just freestyled it n then Ye was like ‘thats it!’ N put everybody on after.” Big Sean conceded that 2 Chainz’s verse was more lyrical, but he chalked this up to the advantage of Chainz hearing his verse first. “Chainz put his verse on later,” he claimed. “So he of course had an advantage n made his verse more lyrical [fire emoji].” Apparently, this was standard practice during the Cruel Summer sessions. Sean claimed the same exact thing occurred during the making of “Clique.”

Big Sean Claims He Has The Best Verse On “Mercy”

This is not the first time Big Sean has pushed back against the opinion that 2 Chainz bested him. Chainz claimed that be won the song way back in 2020, and Sean reportedly called him out for it. At least, that’s what he said during an appearance on The Rap Pack podcast. “I immediately called him like, ‘What the f*ck you talkin’ about bro?’,” Sean recalled. Chainz allegedly tried to walk back the comment, but Sean remained steadfast. “He was like, ‘No, no, I wasn’t talking about you, bro. I was talkin’ about the whole game. Obviously everybody on there was going crazy.’ I’m like, ‘That’s not how it seemed.’”

While the exchange sounded tense, Big Sean assured listeners that there was nothing but love between him and 2 Chainz. “That’s my brother,” he explained. “We was just really kinda kidding around.” Whoever had the best verse, both Sean and Chainz benefited from “Mercy.” The single peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the highest charting single of Chainz’s career, and the second-highest for Big Sean following “Dance (A$$).”

Rich Homie Quan & 2 Chainz Reunite On “Ah’Chi”

Despite a tumultuous few years in his career, Rich Homie Quan has been on a consistent streak as of late, one that may have flown on the radar. Nonetheless, he’s continued to dish out banger after banger after leaving the major label system. The Atlanta MC came back this week with the release of a new single titled, “Ah’Chi” alongside 2 Chainz. The icy banger boasts production from 2Tall, who leans into the guitar-laden production that sounds inspired by the early 2020s outings by YSL. And even Rich Homie Quan’s melodic inflections feels like something out of Gunna’s playbook.

“Ah’Chi” pays homage to their Atlanta roots, as the cover art suggests. The title itself is a reference to local slang that means to “overexaggerate.” In a way, that kind of embodies some of the bars they dish out and the hyperbolic wordplay (“I knock the whole buildin’ down, b*tch/ Walk out that hoe, I had no debris”). For 2 Chainz, the verse serves as an ode to the trap boy chic that carried his early career as he reflects on maneuvering through the streets to get paid and eventually, becoming a boss on his own.

Listen To Rich Homie Quan & 2 Chainz’s New Collab

Rich Homie Quan has been in go-mode since the release of 2022’s Family & Mula – Reloaded. He’s delivered a number of singles including “Special To Me” ft. Jacquees and “Oxtail” in 2023. Before “Ah’Chi,” he dropped off “Authentic.” Meanwhile, 2 Chainz has been rather lowkey over the past few months following the release of Welcome 2 Collegrove with Lil Wayne. Check out their new collaboration above.

Throwin’ a pool of the money, she cannonball
Even when I sit down, I’ll be standin’ out
Hardest niggas will shoot at your mammy’s house
Shoot while your Grammy’s down

Dave East Ranked His All-Time Best Ballers Who Rap, And Has A Very Short List Of Rappers Who Can Actually Ball

There has long been a lot of crossover between the basketball and hip-hop world. We regularly see artists putting in work in the gym with top hoops trainers and even trying their hand at pro ball, while there is a long history of NBA players hopping in the studio to put out a rap album. As 2 Chainz — who played basketball at Alabama State — once eloquently explained to Dime, a lot of rappers and basketball players come from the same places.

“I know for a lot of Blacks, we thought that our only way to get out of the hood was either rappin’ or playing basketball,” 2 Chainz said. “So it has a common denominator for me and people who have a low socioeconomic status for a background. It kind of feels like you have to have a sport or some kind of other skill set, you dig, to get your mama a house. So that’s why we all want to play basketball, and that’s why all basketball players want to rap.”

However, there are levels to success in that crossover realm, and plenty of debate as to who has done the best when dipping a toe into that other world. On the most recent episode of Uproxx’s “Fresh Pair,” Dave East joined Just Blaze and Katty Customs and the conversation turned to hoops (5:00 mark of the above video). East played college ball at Richmond and Towson before becoming a hip-hop artist, and as such, he’s well-equipped to offer his list of the best ballers who rap and rappers who ball — noting there aren’t many that can really hoop.

“Ballers to rap? I would say, gotta throw Shaq in there. Shaq had a feature with Biggie, so you always gotta throw Shaq in. Shaq was hard, he was probably one of the first ones,” East said. “A.I. I feel like a lot of people don’t put Iverson in there, but I remember the “40 Bars” and all that. I remember Iverson, you feel me. Dame Lillard, to me now, in this generation right now, I think Dame got it as far as a baller that rap.

“Rappers to ball? Me. Yeah, I’m gonna put myself on the top of that list. I gotta get in shape. I feel like a lot of them rapper basketball dudes, they do it now. They got famous, they got a name, and that’s like their hobby in their free time. Like, I really used to play basketball. Before I ever wrote a rhyme or ever really thought about this, I was in the park or in the gym. I was really playing ball. When I see them lists, I laugh. I really used to do that. I need 30 days to get in shape. I got real footage on a real Division 1 program. Go find another rapper, I think 2 Chainz played D1. But it wasn’t too many of them that was. There’s a few of ‘em that nice. Salute the ones that are.”

It’s safe to say East isn’t very impressed by the videos of artists in the lab with Chris Brickley and other hoops trainers, but he does recognize he would need a month to train to get back in actual hoops shape.

Lil Wayne Parties with 2 Chainz, Mack Maine, and Busta Rhymes at LIV Miami After 'IAAB Tour' Performance

On Sunday, March 24th, rapper Lil Wayne joined forces with 2 Chainz, Mack Maine, and Busta Rhymes for a star-studded night at LIV Miami. The gathering followed Lil Wayne’s electrifying performance at Drake’s IAAB tour stop in Sunrise, Florida.
