Nicki Minaj has been all over social media over the last few days. Overall, a lot of what she has been saying on social media has been directed at Megan Thee Stallion. She is currently embroiled in a feud with the rapper, and she is clearly upset about the song “Hiss.” It feels as though Nicki has been stuck on social media ever since the song was put out. Meanwhile, Megan has remained calm about the situation and hasn’t said much else. Needless to say, there are two different approaches being done here.
On Monday morning, Nicki came through and dropped her latest track “Big Foot.” This song has been teased since Friday, and it is meant to be a Meg diss track. Unfortunately for Nicki, very few people are feeling the song right now. The bars are being questioned, and some even think that Nicki may have used ghostwriters in the past. Ultimately, it has not been a good look. Since dropping the song, she has remained active on social media, however, much to the chagrin of some fanbases. In fact, a new petition is circulating, urging platforms to ban her.
The petition was seemingly created by a Cardi B fan. However, it is not gaining as much traction as they may have liked. Since this morning, it has amassed 162 signatures out of a goal of 200. Of course, 200 signatures is not a lot, in the least bit. If social media platforms were to actually ban Minaj, they would need to see millions of people up in arms, and even that might not guarantee a ban. Needless to say, this latest effort may just be all for nothing.

Lately, “Rap Twitter” has been in shambles over the genre’s latest high-profile feud between Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj. Today, Minaj released “Big Foot,” in which she disses her “Hot Girl Summer” collaborator after Megan deftly referenced her marital woes on “Hiss” last Friday (January 26). While fans fuss and fight over which of the two is on top (so far), here’s a timeline of how we got here.
Megan And Nicki Release “Hot Girl Summer” — August 2019
As Megan enjoyed her breakout year, she coined the phrase “Hot Girl Summer” to lay claim to the warmer months when her lively music would reign supreme. Naturally, when it came time to release a song of the same name — and its music video a month later — she recruited the woman who has arguably been the biggest influence on the modern wave of rap it-girls that have exploded onto the scene since 2017.
Unfortunately, it looks like love fest was short-lived, as things apparently soured between them rather quickly (you might notice that this is a common occurence with Nicki’s collaborators). A livestream in which the two women met for the first time could be the reason, as Nicki later cited Meg plying her with alcohol as one of her reasons for changing course on Thee Stallion.
Megan And Cardi B Release “WAP” — August 2020
So, a couple of things here: When Megan decided to accept Cardi’s invitation to collaborate on “WAP,” she surely must have known about Cardi and Nicki’s longstanding beef — and Nicki’s policy about picking a side and staying on it.
While Meg choosing to ignore Nicki’s dictate to shun Cardi almost certainly got under the elder rapper’s skin, the success of “WAP” in comparison to that of “Hot Girl Summer” might have been the factor that sent her over the edge. While “Hot Girl Summer debuted and peaked at No. 11 on the Hot 100, “WAP” not only started at No. 1 but it also spent four non-consecutive weeks there and became the hottest topic of discussion in that span, for good or ill.
Nicki Minaj Airs Out Megan On Queen Radio — September 2022
During Nicki’s September 11 episode of Queen Radio, she took the opportunity to declare a few of her latest rap beefs via a series of “blind items,” lashing out at Latto for praising rap’s newfound parity for women and insinuating that Megan had encouraged her to get an abortion while plying her with liquor during her “drive the boat” era.
Although Megan herself was skeptical that Minaj accused her of anything (bless her; she always looks for context before believing the tweets, which is a good policy for all of us, honestly), she was eventually forced to accept that Nicki had pulled a Nicki and decided her friend was actually her enemy. She’s basically the Joseph Stalin of the rap world.
Nicki Releases “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” Taking Shots At Megan — March 2023
When Nicki returned to the spotlight in early 2023 to release her single “Red Ruby Da Sleeze,” sharp-eared fans quickly noted a line that appeared to be a shot at Megan Thee Stallion. “700 on them horses when we fixing to leave / But I’on f*ck with horses since Christopher Reeves,” she raps, seemingly alluding to Meg’s rap name, which is slang for for “tall, thick woman.”
She also seemingly cited Meg’s recent brand deal with a certain snack brand, sniping, “Dorito b*tches / Mad that they nachos (not chose).” The previous year, Meg had appeared in a Super Bowl ad for the flavored tortilla chips, making “Red Ruby” a pretty clear shot across her bow.
Megan Releases “Hiss” — January 2024
They say revenge is a dish best served cold and nearly a year passed before Megan got hers. In the meantime, she cleared her calendar, freeing herself of her label deal, and waiting for the outcome of the assault trial against Tory Lanez for shooting her in the foot. With favorable outcomes in both cases, she finally turned her attention back to rap beef, taking inspiration from a cold-blooded predactor on “Hiss.”
In addition to smacking down a bunch of her biggest detractors, she aimed a haymaker at Minaj, rapping, “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, these hoes mad at Megan’s Law.” The line refers to a mandate requiring sex offenders to register with local governments and preventing them from living near schools — a law that applies to Nicki’s husband, Kenneth Petty. Nicki and Petty have been locked into a legal battle with his alleged victim over claims they’ve been harassing her to retract her 1995 testimony so he can get off the sex offenders registry.

All of which brings us to today. After Nicki spent the three days since the release of “Hiss” going off on Twitter — you can see a sampling of her tweets below — she responded with a diss track of her own, “Big Foot.” Lashing out with abandon, she repeats some of the most common complaints about Megan’s shooting ( “F*ck you get shot with no scar?”), the younger rapper’s label deal (“‘Fore I hit Carl and buy your catalogue”), and sales (“still ain’t topped ‘Red Ruby’”). This won’t be the end of the drama; all anyone can say for certain is, if you’re already tired of seeing Nicki and Meg on your timeline, it might be time to log out for a good long while.

Over the years, many Frankie Beverly samples have made their way into Hip Hop. For decades now, the music the frontman of Maze made with the band has gotten a lot of love in the rap landscape. With his songs, producers and artists have repeatedly created timeless and nostalgic tracks through the art of sampling. Although he hasn’t released new material since the ‘90s, Frankie Beverly has significantly contributed to R&B, and by proxy, Hip Hop gems. Prominent rappers, including the likes of 50 Cent and 2Pac, have sampled the icon’s music at some point. Evidently, there’s a deep appreciation for the music of Frankie Beverly in Hip Hop. Here are some of his most unforgettable samples in the genre.
On October 11, 2005, “Hustler’s Ambition” was released as the lead single from the Get Rich Or Die Tryin’movie soundtrack. Upon its release, it didn’t take long for the song to gain traction and become a moderate hit. While it wasn’t a chart-topper, it became wildly popular and appeared on charts worldwide. At its core, “Hustler’s Ambition” provides a glimpse into 50 Cent’s life. Emphatically, it chronicles his struggles, ambitions, and relentless pursuit of success. The compelling and introspective track resonated with fans for its raw lyrics, evocative storytelling, and melodic production. Additionally, it contains one of the most popular Frankie Beverly samples in Hip Hop. It features vocal and instrumental elements from “I Need You” by Maze ft. Frankie Beverly. These sampled elements appear in several parts throughout the song.
“The Real One” – 2 Live Crew & Ice-T
As far as unforgettable Frankie Beverly Hip Hop samples go, “The Real One” is certainly one of those. The song was released on April 7, 1998, and is the title track of 2 Live Crew’s eighth album. While it was not a massive commercial success, it was a standout track from the album. “The Real One” was especially enjoyed for its sample of the iconic Maze & Frankie Beverly song, “Before I Let Go.” Besides the many times it has been sampled across genres, “Before I Let Go” has been famously covered by Beyonce and Mary J. Blige. For the sample on “The Real One,” 2 Live Crew used Frankie Beverly’s vocals. In addition, many elements of the original beat were retained as well, and can be heard throughout “The Real One.” 2 Live Crew and Ice-T ate their respective verses up, putting the sample to good use.
“Can U Get Away” – 2Pac
One of the greatest Hip Hop samples of a Frankie Beverly song was created on Tupac’s “Can U Get Away.” This soulful offering from the late icon is a track on his critically acclaimed third album, Me Against The World. While it was not released as one of the album’s singles, it is certainly one of its standout tracks. With evocative lyrics, the song delves into the concept of escaping from a toxic environment for the sake of love. 2Pac was also a full-blown romantic on the track, and he wore the hat proudly. Showcasing his storytelling ability, he vividly painted the picture of a woman trapped in a toxic relationship, and urged her to break free. “Can U Get Away” contains a sample of Frankie Beverly’s “Happy Feelin’s.” The sample, in combination with the beat, creates a soulful and melodic backdrop for 2Pac’s heartfelt lyrics.
While it’s been over a decade since Nate Dogg sadly passed away, his legacy powerfully lives on through songs like “These Days.” It was released as a part of the King of Hook’s debut album, G-Funk Classic, Vol. 1 & 2 (1998). Both Nate Dogg and Daz Dillinger deliver on their verses, and the iconic hook brings it all together. Of the many Frankie Beverly samples present in Hip Hop, the one on “These Days” is arguably the easiest to miss. However, this is precisely why it is so fun to point out and sticks with listeners afterward. Like 2 Live Crew’s “The Real One,” the sampled track on “These Days” is Beverly’s “Before I Let Go.” The sample comes in at the 2:41 mark on “These Days,” and only then. “Go Ahead In The Rain” – A Tribe Called Quest
A Tribe Called Quest released their critically acclaimed debut album on April 10, 1990. One of the tracks that make up the alternative Hip Hop masterpiece is “Go Ahead In The Rain.” Although it is not among the group’s most popular tracks, the song has been appreciated by listeners since 1990. It samples a special rendition of “Joy And Pain” by Frankie Beverly. The version that is sampled is from the Live In Los Angeles album Maze and Frankie Beverly released in 1986. About 30 seconds into “Go Ahead In The Rain,” the sample kicks in. The interesting vocal sample is taken from the 0:21 mark of “Joy and Pain (Live in Los Angeles).” Although no additional elements are borrowed from the song, that one vocal sample significantly contributes to “Go Ahead in the Rain.” It can be heard throughout the song.
The Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion beef has dominated the news cycle for days now. It all follows the release of her new song “HISS” last week. The track settles quite a few scores with those who have continued to use Megan’s traumatic shooting incident with Tory Lanez as a punchline. But the wake of the song’s release seems to have sent Nicki into a tailspin. The “Everybody” rapper has been extensively posting to Twitter throughout the entire weekend. Nicki dropped “Big Foot” overnight with lyrics that were lifted straight from some of her tweets. The song was met with quite a bit of backlash from fans for its incoherent flows and some claims that appear to be straight-up lies. In response to a fan speculating that Nicki had even more in the tank, she confirmed it. “I have 4 more baby. 4” she said in her response tweet. It’s unclear if she means four more entire diss tracks or just four new songs. Nicki was reportedly working on a deluxe version of her new album Pink Friday 2 before Megan’s diss track dropped so it’s no surprise that she has some material primed and ready.
For her part, Megan Thee Stallion seems pretty unbothered. She’s barely even acknowledged any of Nicki’s responses. Instead, she’s shared pics to social media appearing to be living her best life despite the beef. With every year comes another wave of anticipated albums. ASAP Rocky’s has to be at the top of people’s lists in 2024. Throughout 2023, the New York multi-hyphenate relentlessly teased his forthcoming record Don’t Be Dumb. Many thought it would drop, especially after he came through with two singles “Same Problems?” and “RIOT (Rowdy Pipe’n).” Both brought different vibes and look to be additions to the tracklist when that ever gets revealed. If this year roughly follows the same song pattern as the one before it, then we could be in for a new treat very soon.
ASAP Rocky was in Europe this past weekend for a glamorous charity concert in Paris, according to HipHopDX. Many other music celebs were in attendance, including his “RIOT” collaborator Pharrelland his booRihanna. Besides the spectacle that was Rocky and his accompanying orchestra, the song that was played is what is getting the buzz. The track is rumored to be called “Whiskey” and it features Griselda rapper Westside Gunn.
Damon Albarn, one-half of the famed alternative band Gorillaz, is also in the mix. Clams Casino tag teams the production making for an all-star lineup. We have no true idea of what the original version sounds like, but Rocky’s rapping and flows are very solid. Late last year, ASAP and Westside were in the studio together, presumably working on “Whiskey,” according to HipHopDX. Gunn even detailed their link-up in the studio on Twitter, as seen above. This would not be their first collab, but, it sounds like it could be their best.
