Keyshia Cole Says John Singleton Was Supposed To Direct Her Biopic

Keyshia Cole says that the late John Singleton was originally planning to direct her new biopic, Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story. She revealed the detail in a personal message after the film premiered on Thursday. Singleton passed away in 2019 at the age of 51 after suffering a stroke.

“John Singleton, we sat down with him and was supposed to do the movie,” she said. “That didn’t happen then.” She also joked that Singleton didn’t want to cast Cole as herself, which led to her going in a different direction. “Rest in peace John Singleton,” she added.

Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story premiered on Lifetime, on Thursday night. The film follows Cole’s life and music career with a focus on her relationship with her mother, Frankie Lons, who passed away in October 2021 after a drug overdose. Elsewhere in her message after the premiere, Cole dedicated the movie to Lons.

“Mommy this movie is for you,” she stated. “I’ve seen the film five times, so I’ve done a lot of crying and reflecting. For the most part, it’s a reflection of my life and my love I have for my mom. Hate that it ended the way that it did. But the truth is, this is my life.”

Keyshia Cole’s New Biopic

Cole also spoke about how the film came together, revealing that Lifetime reached out to her. “Lifetime was calling for a little while,” she said. “When I did the VERZUZ, they were reaching out about doing the movie. We didn’t do it at that time. Shortly after, my mom had passed. They reached back out like, ‘Yo, this is some things that’s happened.’ My dad passed after that, then my dog 14 years passed. Okay, my best friend too? Gotcha. We decided to capture that during that time, but we were trying to do the movies when I first got signed to Interscope.”

Jadakiss Tells Symba “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like You”

“They don’t make ’em like you, baby,” Jadakiss is heard telling Symba in the clip. He continues, “They don’t make ’em like you. I love it, baby. Dog, you one of dem ones.” The clip showcases just how impactful Jadakiss has been on Symba’s life and career.

Earlier this year, Jadakiss shared some rappers who may have had an influence on his own career. During an interview with Erika Fernandez, he told her his top five rappers. “Biggie, DMX, Nas, JAY-Z,” he listed, leaving one spot for himself. He also appeared on UPROXX’s Fresh Pair in 2022, where he discussed his favorite rappers. “I think Guru, rest in peace. [Method Man], you know when the [Wu-Tang Clan] came Meth’s voice was deep and raspy and just he has an ill voice,” he explained. “Big, with the nasal. Sounds like he’s having a hard time breathing but that’s making his cadence extra crazy. Tone-Loc, Tone-Loc’s voice was ill. Nas, with the nasal. That’s voices! So don’t get mad at me.”

Ice Cube Calls Out “Gatekeepers” Blocking His Big3 League

Ice Cube slammed “gatekeepers” on Twitter, Sunday, for putting up resistance to the growth of his BIG3 basketball league. He says he’ll be going on a “Fuck the Gatekeepers” podcast tour this summer to expose those working against him.

“I’ma go talk to everybody,” the former N.W.A. rapper said. “Everybody. And get a chance to get my message out to the people. Be able to let people hear from me. And, you might agree, you might not. But, the important thing is, for me to go on these platforms and say what I feel about what I think.”

Ice Cube Attends A Big3 Game In NYC

NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 25: Ice Cube applauds during week one of the BIG3 three on three basketball league at Barclays Center on June 25, 2017 in New York City. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

Cube says that he’s been getting pushback from the NBA and major television networks since launching the league in 2017. He continued: “Some people may get pissed off. ‘Cause I’m going to talk to everybody. I’m not playing. It’s gone be a cr*zy summer. It’s gone be fun.”

Despite the lack of support from mainstays in the industry, Cube says that the Big3 is more popular than ever. Appearing on Logan Paul’s IMPAULSIVE podcast, earlier this year, he claimed that the league attracts more views than both the MLS and NHL. “It’s been hard as hell to get it going. I mean, to get people to start fighting us on these different fronts,” Cube said at the time. “Our ratings are better than MLS, our ratings are better than NHL. So we got a sport that’s making noise. I wouldn’t know the world no different. This is just a new version of the same song. We dealt with it in music, movies and we’re dealing with it in sports.”

Ice Cube Calls Out “Gatekeepers”

He continued: “We’ve had five great seasons so we’re planning to have our sixth, but the challenges are there for any young league. We’re just meeting them head-on and it’s cool people will get a chance to see what we’re going through.” The new season of Big3 will be kicking off at United Center Arena in Chicago on June 25.

The First BET Awards 2023 Hip-Hop 50 Performance Featured Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, And Sugarhill Gang

The 2023 BET Awards paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with a massive slate of decades-spanning performances. The first, taking place just after Lil Uzi Vert’s opening performance of “Just Wanna Rock,” included Sugarhill Gang performing their career hit, “Rapper’s Delight” and an appearance from MC Lyte performing “Cha Cha Cha,” as well as D-Nice (yes, that D-Nice) with “Call Me D-Nice,” and Big Daddy Kane rapping “Raw,” all accompanied by DJ Kid Capri on the wheels of steel. A Biz Markie tribute followed as the crowd sang along to “Just A Friend.” And that was all in the first ten minutes.

There are a ton of performers left to hit the stage, including Kid ‘N Play, Uncle Luke, Warren G, E-40, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Master P, Remy Ma, Trick Daddy, Trina, the Ying Yang Twins, Chief Keef, Soulja Boy, and Tyga. More contemporary performances are set to include 2023 nominees Coco Jones, Doechii, GloRilla, and more.

The BET Awards aren’t the only ones paying homage to 50 years of hip-hop. The Grammys put on a 10-minute show to celebrate, while UPROXX has held it down with interviews with Just Blaze and Rhymesayers. Stay tuned for more BET Awards coverage as the ceremony continues.

Lil Uzi Vert Opened The 2023 BET Awards With A Performance Of ‘Just Wanna Rock’ And An Unreleased Track

The 2023 BET Awards are celebrating 50 years of hip-hop with an emphasis on the genre’s pioneers. However, they haven’t forgotten about the new school. Opening up the ceremony was Lil Uzi Vert with a performance of his hit song “Just Wanna Rock.” With an army of dancers by their side, the Philadelphia native highlighted rap music’s incorporation of dance sub-genres like Jersey Club.

Although they weren’t nominated in any categories this year, that didn’t stop Lil Uzi Vert from using the time to tease what’s come from their upcoming project, The Pink Tape. Right before they wowed the crowd with “Just Wanna Rock,” the rapper played a snippet from an unreleased song.

During an Instagram live stream with popular streamer Kai Cenat, Lil Uzi Vert personally shared details about the forthcoming release. During the broadcast, Uzi revealed that all songs for the album had been chosen. According to the musician, The Pink Tape will feature 24 tracks, including their smash single “Just Wanna Rock.”

In addition to those songs, fans will be treated to two bonus tracks that, in their words, “A lot of people love but didn’t really get to hear.”

The official cover for the album and full tracklist is rumored to come out this week.

Lil Uzi Vert is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Akon Crowd Surfs In A Giant Plastic Bubble

A new clip of Akon rolling over a crowd of his fans has hit the internet. In the clip, Akon is seen descending from the stage on top of security guards before his bubble is passed on to the audience. Some social media users clowned the artist for the clumsy-looking display, however, others noted that the bubble could actually be a smart idea. The Shade Room shared the clip today, and viewers raced to the comments section to share their thoughts.

“Crowd-surfing in a clear balloon at a hot summer festival, while wearing a sweater and ski pants is WILD,” one viewer writes. Another user claims that the singer appears to be in “a hamster ball.” “He don’t got a single song where he need to be doing this,” someone else in the comments jokes. Other took the opportunity to bring up controversial comments Akon has made in the past.

Akon Rolls Over His Fans

At the end of last year, the singer received a great deal of backlash for comparing Black Americans and African performers. He claimed at the time that Americans are typically “wobbling, pants hanging half down, bored as hell, half asleep ‘cause they high as hell on stage. But [in] Africa, we wake up in the morning, like look at these YouTube clips of all these kids from Uganda. Like these kids are performers. So for us, it comes natural.”

Van Lathan even chimed in on the controversial comments. “First off, Akon has been on his clown sh*t for years now but that’s another topic,” he began. “When you single out Black Americans for criticism, the ones who have culturally empowered the entire diaspora,” he continued, “you’re sh*tting an entire experience I feel connected to by birthright.” Lathan then called out Akon for “cosplaying like brothers from Atlanta or Miami” throughout his career, making a ton of money off of the same people he criticized.
