Jack Harlow’s Appreciative ‘They Don’t Love It’ Video Gives Fans A Tour Of Louisville

Kentucky native Jack Harlow shows off his Louisville stomping grounds in the appreciative video for “They Don’t Love It” from his new album, Jackman. As Jack raps about balancing his ambitions and staying down-to-earth, he revisits some of the personal landmarks from his life, some of which are included in the song.

From his old high school to a local bookshop, everywhere Jack goes in the documentary-style video, he’s greeted with the enthusiasm and warmth fitting of a hometown hero’s triumphant return. Meanwhile, Jack and his friends engage in some typical Midwestern mischief, setting off fireworks in a field and playing indoor soccer — which he seems to be pretty good at, scoring a goal as he mugs the camera.

Jackman dropped on Friday after a short wind-up that included the announcement and the release all in the same week. While fans had a few days to appreciate and debate the album’s cover, Jack kept the 10-track project under wraps until its release, which surprised fans with its return to Jack’s more introspective sensibilities after the more party-centric Come Home The Kids Miss You. It remains to be seen whether he’ll announce a tour for the album, but we’ll be seeing more of him this month when White Men Can’t Jump comes to Hulu.

Jack Harlow Goes Back To His Old Ways With Newfound Wisdom On ‘Jackman’

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

Maybe it was the lukewarm reception to his last album, Come Home The Kids Miss You, or maybe it was the backlash to his casting in a remake of White Men Can’t Jump, but Jack Harlow seems fed up. On his newest album, Jackman, he goes back to the old Jack, only this time, with a chip on his shoulder and more to say than ever. Oddly enough, this more combative stance suits him, positioning him perfectly to address some of his recent controversies and distance himself from one of the most common complaints about him.

In a recent trailer for the FX show Dave, the show’s protagonist Lil Dicky engages in a tense (but comedic) confrontation with fellow white rapper Jack Harlow. While the episode itself hasn’t aired yet, it’s the origin of their on-screen beef is, like most things in the show, inspired by real life. The two men, both white rappers with oodles of curly hair and off-kilter senses of humor, are often compared, and Harlow especially seems to bristle at such connections.

That’s probably because, unlike Dicky, Jack has taken rap seriously from the beginning. At least, at the outset of Dicky’s career, it seemed that the elder rapper treated hip-hop — and his presence in it — as something of a joke. And while Dicky captured the public’s hearts with his obviously dedicated flow and sharp wit, Harlow never approached hip-hop as though he were an outsider. But the two entertainers have ended up at a similar place, albeit from disparate paths.

Rap fans seem to regard both with an equal measure of curiosity and skepticism. Although he’d been independently releasing mixtapes for several years before “What’s Poppin” took over the charts in 2020, most fans were introduced to him by that song. And, as so often happens in the post-blog rap era, many of those fans apparently regard him as an interloping, overnight success. In short, they sort of see him as Lil Dicky 2.0, just using rap to get over until he can move on to bigger, “better” things.

Jack’s resentment of this assessment is no clearer than in “It Can’t Be,” which tackles those accusations head-on. “It can’t be that I simply make ear candy,” he muses. “Especially when the industry could just plant me / Especially when I didn’t grow up on Brandy” — a nod to the non-controversy last year in which it was revealed he didn’t know R&B singers Brandy and Ray J were siblings, another mark against him in the eyes of fans who view him more as a cultural tourist than a hip-hop purist.

Likewise, Jack employs his observational gifts to highlight and subtly satirize the sizable and growing portion of the fan base that actually is engaging in the tourism, appropriation, and exploitation of hip-hop in the album’s intro, “Common Ground.” While the song stops short of outright judgment, it is lightly antagonistic, the way a good journalist should be when interrogating a subject (Jack has plenty to say on that count here). While this isn’t his first time addressing this disconnect, it’s done more bluntly — and more deftly — here.

Unlike Dicky, these were always tools that Harlow had in his bag. But, to tease — or torture — the metaphor a little, there was one other element that Jack needed to put these tools to good use. Any carpenter who wants to acquire their license must first complete an apprenticeship and put in their hours as a journeyman. In short, what Jack Harlow needed was experience and time to make full use of his technical skills, to hone them to the point that a Jackman would be possible.

“Gang Gang Gang” highlights this. A concept track which the rapper poses as a series of conversations catching up with friends back home, he’s horrified to learn that some of his closest friends have turned out to be bad eggs. It’s effective because he doesn’t pull back to make any larger political points, he keeps the focus on the discomfort and disbelief he feels and his internal struggle to reconcile the kids he knew with the monsters they grew up to be — and how to let them go. It’s a conversation more of us should be having with ourselves if we’re honest.

The glitzy, Neptunes-inspired production of Come Home — which was timely in its own right, but rubbed day-one fans and newbies the wrong way — is gone, replaced by the earthy, soul-looped backpack rap of Harlow’s youth. (An interesting catch-22 is that, had this been his second album after the success of That’s What They All Say, he’d have been undoubtedly written off as a self-serious, one-note backpacker. He had to release the glossy, celebratory Come Home in order to be taken seriously). Instead of R&B hooks and flashy features, Jackman is just 10 two-minute songs, each digging deeper into subjects he’s always touched on but with more maturity and insight than we’ve previously seen.

The funny thing is, he’s always had this in him. Jackman is, after all, his full first name. Little has changed but the circumstances. Harlow is now just a little more weathered. He’s grown into himself more as a man (it’s easy to forget, he’s just 25 years old; his brain is literally still not finished cooking from a biological standpoint). Jackman, the album, is Jackman, the person, completing his journeymanship. He knows what he’s doing now and maybe now, we’ll trust that. He may not ever shake the Lil Dicky comparisons, but now even those listeners who only scratch the surface will know he’s no joke.

50 Cent Got A Kick Out Of Roy Wood Jr.’s ‘BMF’ Shoutout At The White House Correspondents Dinner

50 Cent has mostly stayed out of politics for the last couple of years — and thank goodness, considering some of the stuff he’s said in the past, joking or not. But that didn’t stop him from getting a kick out of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner — specifically, Roy Wood Jr.’s speech shouting out 50’s shows BMF and Power as he joked about Tucker Carlson’s abrupt departure from the spotlight for embarrassing Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch (who should be embarrassed about Fox News in general, but I digress).

In the clip, which 50 posted to Instagram, Wood jokes:

“The untouchable Tucker Carlson is out of the job. Well, some people celebratin’. But to Tucker’s staff, I want you to know that I know what you’re feeling. I work at The Daily Show, so I too know what it’s like to be blindsided by the sudden departure of the host of the fake news program. Tucker got caught up! He got caught up like that dude from Vanderpump Rules. Text message stuff. I don’t know what Vanderpump Rules is about, only watched it a couple times. My friends tell me it’s like BMF but for white people. Or is that Succession? No, Succession is Power but for white people. No! Tucker Carlson is power for white people. No, that’s white power, ya know never mind, don’t worry about that one.

I’m not sure that those are the comparisons that I would make for those shows (BMF and Power have more in common with The Sopranos and Peaky Blinders than a reality show about a rich white lady’s various businesses) but 50 — and President Joe Biden — seem pretty amused. Check out the clip above.

Selena Gomez Kidney Donor Throws Shade At Her In Video

Selena Gomez seems to have done something to anger her former friend and kidney donor, Francia Raisa. In a video taken by TMZ, the How I Met Your Father actress is out and about in Studio City with her dog. The actress was asked about her relationship with Selena, but she repeatedly and obviously changed the subject. Raisa seems to indirectly criticize her former friend and organ recipient by avoiding answering questions about whether they are still friends. Raisa even refused to address whether she would follow Selena back on social media. The TMZ cameraman also asked if she would consider donating an organ again. However, she seems to be more interested in guiding others through the process.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa have been good friends since childhood. They both worked as young actors. In 2017, Francia donated her kidney to Selena after her own had failed due to lupus. Following the successful surgery, the two remained close, with Selena expressing gratitude to Francia for saving her life on numerous occasions. However, their relationship seemed to take a turn in November when Selena told an interviewer that Taylor Swift was the only person she was close to in Hollywood. After Selena’s remark went viral, Francia responded with “interesting” and unfollowed Selena on social media.

Selena’s Social Media Spat

Selena Gomez’s alleged fight with her friend Francia Raisa is not the only spat she has been in recently. She was recently embroiled in some seemingly unwilling social media drama with Hailey Bieber. Fans read into some videos posted by both parties and assumed they were shading one another. Selena eventually addressed the rumors of a feud between her and Hailey, which had been circulating for weeks.

The situation became so extreme that Selena’s fans even sent death threats to Hailey. As a result, Selena posted a message on Instagram, denouncing the actions of those sending the threats and calling for people to be more thoughtful. Her message effectively put an end to any speculation of animosity between the two women, and Hailey later expressed her gratitude to Selena for her defense. The model shared her appreciation on Instagram, indicating that she was thankful for Gomez’s actions. What do you think about Selena’s situation with Raisa? Let us know in the comments!

Draymond Green Loses Respect For Domantas Sabonis

Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors advanced to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. On Sunday, the Warriors proved they were the better team beating the Kings in Game 7. The series had plenty for fans and the media to discuss. Including an incident that involved Green and Domantas Sabonis early on. However, the Warriors got the last laugh, eliminating the Kings from the playoff. But it appears that Green may have an unsettled beef with Sabonis.

Green was suspended for Game 3 of the series after stomping Sabonis in Game 2. The incident has long been discussed due to sides being picked as to why the incident happened in the first place. But in the end, Green’s suspension turned out to just be a bump in the Warriors road. Quickly after the series, the Warriors forward took to his podcast to discuss the series. Green had a lot of praise for Kings superstar De’Aaron Fox. However, Sabonis may still be on the beef list.

Draymond Green Calls Sabonis Weak

“Lost a lot of respect for Sabonis. You don’t shake guys hands after you lose? I don’t respect that… You lost, deal with it. Pay your respect,” Green stated on his feelings toward Sabonis. However, the Warriors star shouldn’t be too surprised that Sabonis would not shake hands. But that didn’t stop Green from letting the world know his thoughts on the Kings forward. Players not shaking hands has long been an issue with teams after an emotional playoff series. Including Micahel Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and the ‘Bad Boy’ Detroit Pistons.

Whatever the case may be, the Warriors and Kings put on a great show for fans. The series between the two teams was one of the more exciting matchups of the first round. However, the young Kings team wasn’t ready for the next step along their franchise’s journey. Now the second round will see a matchup between the Warriors and LeBron James. The possible last matchup between the two longtime rivals. Do you believe that Draymond Green’s assessment of Sabonis is correct? Or is Sabonis doing nothing wrong with his post-game involvement? Let us know what you think in the comment section. For the latest NBA news, keep it right here at HNHH.

Westside Gunn Hints At New Virgil Artwork For New Album

Westside Gunn is no stranger to complementing great music with extraordinary art. Whether he’s making statements through his clothing or within his music, The Fly God always puts the art at the forefront. Albeit, the Buffalo native plans to retire next year, he still has one last hoorah for the fans. Currently, the Griselda co-founder is working on the follow-up to his wildly acclaimed tape Pray for Paris. Not only that, but he also revealed on Twitter that he was putting out another project called & Then U Pray For Me. Both tapes are set to drop soon. Pray for Paris 2 releasing Friday during Fashion Week and & Then U Pray For Me dropping on June 23rd.

Furthermore, in an interview, Westside Gunn attributes his artistic journey to his relationship with close friend cultural architect Virgil Abloh. The renowned designer passed away on November 28, 2021, proceeding to a private battle with cancer. “Virgil changed my life. He was the turning point for me. I’m going to be honest, and for many reasons,” Westside Gunn told AllHipHop.com. It was Virgil who invited the rapper to Paris. Gunn was hesitant to go overseas due to his history as a hustler. He thought that once he applied for a passport, his checkered past would surface, landing him in prison. “He was like, ‘Yo, come to Paris with me.’ And I was like, I don’t know about all that, man,” The Fly God explained.

Westside Gunn Announces “Pray For Paris 2”

Nevertheless, Virgil got Westside Gunn out to Paris and helped him get a passport. Despite only communicating via text, the two met face-to-face for the first time in the City of Light. Later, after their meeting, Abloh went on to design Gunn’s album cover for Pray for Paris using Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath. Once they got to the topic of the sequel the Griselda rhymer gave a few extra details.

“What people don’t know is, quiet as it’s kept, that Virgil was so ahead of his time that he had already designed s### for two to three years ahead of time,” Gunn explained. The Fly God also noted that before the cultural icon left us, he already had collections of stuff already designed. “What people don’t know about me, and Virgil, is he already designed four album covers for me,” detailed the Buffalo native. Additionally, he said, “Pray for Paris was the first one. There’s still more that we got coming.” Westside Gunn’s Pray for Paris 2 is releasing during Fashion Week with one of Virgil’s most iconic designs. Let us know if you’re ready for some new music from The Fly God below!

Snoop Dogg Joins Bid For Ottawa Senators Ownership

Snoop Dogg has become more than just a music icon. The legendary entertainer has always been a huge sports fan. Including wearing his heart on his sleeve for his Los Angeles Lakers recent playoff run. As well as stealing the show at this past year’s Wrestlemania. Now, Snoop is looking to extend his reach to more than just being a sports fan. The Rap legend is looking to become a sports franchise owner. However, it may be in the sport that everyone would least expect.

On Monday, Snoop made an Instagram post expressing his excitement about the possibility of becoming an NHL owner. The Ottawa Senators are the latest NHL franchise looking for new ownership. “Amazing what @neko_sparks is trying to do in Ottawa & I’m looking forward to being apart of that ownership team. I WANNA BRING HOCKEY TO OUR COMMUNITY,” Snoop captioned in a photo of Sparks being connected to the Senators. However, Snoop isn’t the only celebrity interested in becoming an owner of the NHL franchise.

Snoop Dogg Wants To Bring The NHL To The Culture

Candian megastar Ryan Reynolds is also part of a separate ownership bid for the Ottawa franchise. Reynolds already has some experience as a sports owner. As the ‘Deadpool’ star, along with Rob McElhenney, are owners of the National League soccer team Wrexham A.F.C. However, Reynolds has long desired a chance to become an NHL owner. However, it doesn’t seem that the franchise is leaning one way or another with the direction they are looking for new ownership.

Snoop is excited at the opportunity to be a part of the first Black ownership in the NHL. If the bid, including Snoop, becomes official, the move will be a massive milestone for the sport. However, nothing has been made official by the franchise or current ownership. But if it does become official, does a team owned by Snoop Dogg easily become the most popular in the league? What would the ownership mean for the Senators franchise? Let us know what you think in our comment section. For the latest news on HIp-Hop and sports, keep it right here with HNHH.

Snoop Dogg Says A.I. Music Is “Outta Hand”

Snoop Dogg says that A.I. generated music is getting out of hand. The legendary rapper shared his opinion on the technology while posting a video of A.I. Michael Jackson doing a cover of C-Murder’s hit song “Down 4 My N’s.”

“This shit is outta hand,” Snoop wrote in the Instagram post while adding in the caption, “Wow.” “I’ve done a lot of things in my life I’m not proud of. But I ain’t done nothing bad enough to deserve hearing this,” one fan commented on Snoop’s post. “Proving AI can’t beat actual tangible human talent,” another wrote.

Snoop is far from the first artist to comment on the rise of A.I. music in recent weeks. Young Guru called for government regulation in response to the technology to protect the rights of artists. “On one hand I’m well aware that you can’t stop technology. Once the genie is out of the box you can put him back in,” Guru wrote on social media. “On the other hand we have to protect the rights of the artist. Not only artist but everyone in society. People should not be able to take your Name, Image and Likeness without permission. We have to add the voice to this law. We have to learn from past mistakes. You would be a fool to chase every person that is going to do this. We learned that lesson with Napster. The only way I see to deal with it is to change the law. There are so many different opinions. We could change the United States law tomorrow but the internet is world wide. What a time we live in!!”

Other A.I. songs to go viral in recent weeks include a collaboration between Drake and The Weeknd, as well as a song by an A.I. JAY-Z. While many artists have voiced their discomfort with the idea of A.I. music, others have embraced it. JoJo praised the technology, last week, while Grimes has also encouraged fans to use her voice so long as she gets a share of the profits.

Juice WRLD, XXXTentacion, Drake Are Most-Streamed Rappers

Juice WRLD, XXXTentacion, and Drake have topped the list of rappers with the most streams per song. All three artists topped 200 million streams per song on Spotify. Even with Spotify’s well-known low payout, the artists are earning quite a bit from numbers like that. Rounding out the list with just under 200 million are Travis Scott, Pop Smoke, and Kendrick Lamar, who all have upwards of 150 million streams per song. It is worth noting that both Juice and X achieved this record-breaking moment several years after they passed.

Whether or not their untimely deaths have anything to do with their streaming numbers cannot be confirmed. However, it is clear that the high number of streams per song shows just how much both Juice and X were loved by their fans. The pair were both poised to be huge names in the industry, but their lives were tragically cut short. Still, their staying power shows what an incredible impact they had in the time that they spent making music.

Juice WRLD Continues To Break Records Posthumously

Despite passing away prematurely, Juice WRLD’s music career has continued to achieve significant milestones. Just a few weeks ago, it was revealed that the rapper had exceeded 30 billion streams on Spotify alone. This established him as one of the most streamed artists ever. When you consider other platforms, it is difficult to imagine how many streams Juice has accumulated. Recently, Cole Bennet, Juice’s close friend and collaborator, celebrated a personal achievement in their careers. He announced on Instagram that the first music video he had ever directed for Juice had reached 300 million views on YouTube.

Juice WRLD’s untimely death was a tremendous loss to the music industry and the community at large. He had emerged as one of the fastest-rising stars on the scene. Since his passing, the rapper’s music has only grown in popularity. In 2021, the RIAA announced that the rapper had received 50 new gold and platinum song certifications posthumously. His 2018 single “Lucid Dreams” has been certified 9x platinum. What do you think of Juice’s place atop the most streamed rappers? Is there someone else you think should be there? Let us know in the comments!
