Student Loan Forgiveness Questions Loom in 2023

063186e0 903c 11ed 9ff1 47b815938ff8

Student loan borrowers are moving into the new year with uncertainty. President Joe Biden’s game-changing student, loan forgiveness program lies in the hands of the Supreme Court. The pandemic-related pause on student loan payments remains in effect, but a restart date depends on when the Supreme Court rules on the forgiveness program– it could come as late as summer’s end.

For now, significant changes are coming in July to the existing Public Service Loan Forgiveness program that helps government and nonprofit workers. A new income-driven repayment plan that could lower payments for specific federal student loan borrowers is being drawn up.

In late February, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in two cases regarding Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, which could deliver up to $20,000 of debt relief for millions of low- and middle-income borrowers. A decision on program adoption is expected to move forward in June, but it is on hold, and no debt will be discharged under the program.

Biden announced his plans for student loan forgiveness in August. The Department of Education received about 26 million applications for debt relief by the time a federal district court judge struck down the program on November 10.

Lawyers for the Biden administration say that Congress gave the secretary of education “expansive authority to alleviate the hardship that federal student loan recipients may suffer as a result of national emergencies,” like the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a memo from the Department of Justice. However, litigants argue the Biden administration has exceeded its authority. Recent Supreme Court decisions have ruled against aggressive agency actions.

The pandemic-related pause on loan payments is going strong for the third consecutive year. Though fees were previously set to resume in January, the Biden administration extended the break after federal courts halted its student loan forgiveness program. Officials had told borrowers that debt relief would be granted before payments restarted.

The payment pause will now last until 60 days after litigation over Biden’s student loan forgiveness program is resolved. If the program has not been implemented and the litigation has not been resolved by June 30, payments will resume 60 days after that. Borrower balances have effectively been frozen since March 2020, and since then, interest has stopped adding up, and collections on defaulted debt have also been on hold.

The benefits come at varying degrees of helpfulness for borrowers. The government has paid $155 billion through the end of 2022 for the yearlong pause.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program allows certain government and nonprofit employees to seek federal student loan forgiveness after making 10 years of qualifying payments. Yet, a yearlong waiver that expanded eligibility for the PSLF program expired on October 31. Under the new rules, borrowers can receive credit toward PSLF on late payments, in installments, or a lump sum. Prior authorities only counted a payment as eligible if it was made in full within 15 days of its due date. Specific periods of deferment, such as cancer treatment, military service, economic hardship, and time served in AmeriCorps and the National Guard, will count toward PSLF. Additionally, the new rule will consider the new standard full-time employee work week to be 30 hours.

Changes to Biden’s plan could impact roughly 8 million people currently enrolled in income-driven repayment plans and open up the programs for more borrowers. This would reduce monthly debt burdens and the total amount borrowers pay over the lifetime of their loans.

Those with federal student loan debt incurred during undergraduate school can expect the new regulations to cap payments at 5% of a borrower’s discretionary income, down from the 10% offered in most current income-driven plans. Single borrowers making less than $30,600 per year would not need to make any payments under the proposal, up from the current $24,000 threshold.

Health Officials Dismiss Vaccine Injury In Recent Sports Related Death

Screen Shot 2023 01 11 at 10.16.07 AM

16-year-old Ashari Hughes collapsed and died of a heart attack while playing flag football for Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas last week. Health officials are dismissing claims vaccine injury is the cause of death.

Hughes collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest during a home game against Valley High School. Staff performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but they were unable to save her.

“Staff immediately began providing medical aid and continued until paramedics arrived,” Principal Ian Salzman said in an email sent to students’ families. “It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that the student passed away.”

Ashari was a sophomore at Desert Oasis High School. Her parents, Enttroda and Twayne Hughes, were in the stands when she collapsed.

They told FOX5 that Ashari had been experiencing ongoing heart problems and they were consulting with a cardiologist. A doctor cleared Ashari to play in the game. The family said she began experiencing chest pain during the game and she went to the sideline to take a break when she collapsed.

Registered nurse Aphelia Phifer-Hill rushed onto the field to perform CPR on Ashari, who was her daughter’s teammate.

“Today was the first time ever, in my 26 years of nursing that I had to do CPR on a kid,” she posted on Facebook.

Ashari’s parents described her as “passionate” and “fun loving”. “She loved music, dancing, and being around all the people she loved,” they wrote in a statement. “She called football the real love of her life!”

The family created a GoFundMe page to pay for her funeral expenses.

Ashari wasn’t an NFL player, but her death touched the hearts of many
Her death was compared to Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a Monday night football game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Both Ashari and Damar were vaccinated against Covid-19. However, health experts dismissed speculation that Damar’s cardiac arrest was caused by a vaccine injury. According to the office, Hughes died from anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from left coronary sinus of Valsalva.  “The National Library of Medicine describes Hughes’ cause of death as a ‘rare congenital abnormality’ that represents less than 3% of coronary anomalies.” Fox 5 News said the journal says the condition can cause such things as “myocardial ischemia, also known as reduced blood flow, arrhythmias, or sudden cardiac death.”

Tekashi 6ix9ine Trolls Gunna’s IG Return Post: ‘U Can’t Make This Shit Up’

Wack 100 Details His Partnership With Tekashi 6ix9ine

Tekashi 6ix9ine has seen Gunna’s recent statement and support for YSL and thinks it is all a joke.

Doubling down in his stance that he did not snitch, Gunna wrote on Instagram: “N***as acting like they switching to a side But it’s only one side. #YslTheLabel #FreeThug & Yak GUNNA BACC!!!!!”

In the image, Gunna is seen sitting in what can be considered a living room with a studio set up, presumably getting ready to craft new music.

6ix9ine hit Gunna’s comments to offer criticism: “In court you said it was a gang here on IG u saying the label,” the rainbow-haired rapper wrote. “Lol u can’t make this shit up.”

The statement is the first for Gunna since his attorney released one in December. The attorney, Steve Sadow, hit social media to shut down lies.

“Gunna did not snitch to get out of jail,” Sadow wrote. “He has said nothing and is not cooperating. His plea statement cannot be used in court against any other defendant. So please stop spreading lies.”

Gunna pleaded guilty to a racketeering conspiracy charge in the YSL RICO case that landed himself, Young Thug, and more in jail.

According to WSB-TV 2 Atlanta, Gunna, born Sergio Kitchens, appeared before a judge on Wednesday, taking the Alford plea, citing pleading guilt was his best interest while maintaining innocence.

Gunna was sentenced to five years, with one serving in prison. The one-year is commuted to time served, while the four-year balance is suspended and will result in a special arrangement, including 500 hours of community service.

Gunna Returned To Social Media Following His Release From Jail After Pleading Guilty To Racketeering

Rapper Gunna is looking to reenter the public fold and its good graces since his incarceration last May. While detained, the musician remained optimistic despite having his request for a bond denied three times. However, that didn’t stop him from writing a letter to his loved ones calling 2022, “one of the best years of my life.”

Although the “Pushin P” rapper has been out of jail for weeks, he’s remained uncharacteristically quiet on social media until yesterday. Taking to Instagram, Gunna shared an image of himself inside of his lush home with the caption, “N****s acting like they switching to a side. But it’s only one side,” adding the hashtags #YslTheLabel #FreeThug&Yak to show his seeming advocacy for his label head, Young Thug who is still incarcerated and awaiting trial. The rapper closed the post with, “Gunna Bacc!”

Gunna’s return to social media didn’t stop there. The rapper also uploaded a message to Twitter, writing, “R.I.P Keed. I love you, and I miss you, twin.” Unfortunately, Lil Keed, a fellow YSL Records artist, passed away shortly after Gunna’s arrest.

People didn’t take too kindly to Gunna’s mention of Young Thug or Lil Keed, including Lil Gotit, Keed’s brother. So Lil Gotit posted a subtle response to Gunna’s post. In the first message, Gotit writes, “N****s got to stop the cap,” implying Gunna’s public show of support for Young Thug is all a facade. Then Gotit follows it up with, “Don’t call me twin,” confirming all ties have been severed.

Notorious rap troll Tekashi 6ix9ine left a comment echoing Lil Gotit’s sentiments, “In court, you said it was a gang. Here on Instagram, you’re saying the label. LOL, you can’t make this sh*t up.”

Lil Yachty Is Assembling An All-Women Band Ahead Of What Seems To Be A New Era

It may be a while before we hear Lil Yachty’s psychedelic Sonic Ranch album, due to the project falling victim to leaks last month, but that’s not keeping him from pursuing other ideas. Yesterday (January 10), the “Poland” rapper announced that he’s looking to form an all-women band.

“Yachty is putting a band together. I want an all-girls band,” he said in an Instagram post, noting he’s looking for two to three background singers, a guitar player, a bass player, a drummer, and a keyboard player. The post was captioned, “Tryouts for my band Thursday. Shall the most talented women please pull up… Let’s Meet! See U Soon Ladies.” It is also worth noting that this is currently the only post on his Instagram page, as his account appears to be cleared — a common practice for artists as they begin to tease new album eras.

It is unclear whether Yachty is wanting to put together the band as part of a new album, for a backing band for an upcoming tour, or for another purpose. However, in an interview with Icebox that took place over a year ago, he revealed that he wants his future projects to spawn from a different creative process.

“I’ve met all these amazing musicians and producers,” he said when speaking about his upcoming album. “It’s like a psychedelic alternative project. It’s different. It’s all live instrumentation. I’ve changed my dynamic. I’m telling you, this album and on, I’m creating music a whole lot differently.”
