YG & Nipsey Hussle’s “FDT” Remains A Major Anthem For A Lot Of Americans Today

It’s another divisive day in America as Donald Trump just won the 2024 election overnight. The Republican representative won and in pretty convincing fashion, taking 277 of a possible 538 electoral votes. Kamala Harris made things interesting in the final stretch, ultimately finishing with 224 votes. Some are rejoicing and others are fearful for what the next four years will look like in the U.S. Overall, presidential elections are always going to lead to a lot of stress regardless of how qualified the candidates are or not in the eyes of the general population. That was definitely true in 2016 when Trump first got into office with many musicians (especially hip-hop artists) voicing the concerns for the country.

YG and Nipsey Hussle were pretty much the voices in that regard of the anti-Trump movement back then with their West Coast anthem, “FDT.” Since last night, many have been running to social media already to tag YG asking for a part three or asking Amazon Alexa to play the track. The song released as a single back on March 30, 2016 and would eventually land on his excellent record from that same year, Still Brazy. “FDT” became an immediate target for the Secret Service for its blatant lyrical jabs at the now current POTUS, with certain lines getting cut. The music video was also a major story, as the video shoot was interrupted by local police. No arrests were made, but numerous citations were handed out. YG and Nip might have ruffled some feathers, but they gave a voice to those who didn’t have enough standing.

You vote Trump then you’re prolly on dope
And if you like me then you prolly ain’t know
And if you been to jail you can prolly still vote

Lil Wayne Voices Desire To Play Super Bowl Halftime Show In Resurfaced Clip

Kendrick Lamar just made another Young Money enemy. The rapper already took out Drake with his historic run of diss tracks. Now, he’s snatched the Super Bowl Halftime Show out from under the New Orleans hometown hero, Lil Wayne. To be clear, Lamar was given the spot, and given his recent run of hits, the booking makes total sense. It’s more the fact that New Orleans fans feel like Wayne should’ve been prioritized given his background. Lil Wayne has stated, point blank, that he wants to lead a Super Bowl Halftime Show in his city.

The statement was made back in February. Lil Wayne went YG’s 4HUNNID podcast to discuss his legacy and his relationship to New Orleans. Naturally, the topic of the Super Bowl came up, given that it will take place in the Big Easy come 2025. Weezy told the host that he hadn’t been contacted about playing at the Halftime Show, but he remained hopeful that he would. “We all praying, we keeping our fingers crossed,” he explained. “I’m working hard.” Lil Wayne said that the desire to headline the Super Bowl was actually motivating him during the recording sessions for his upcoming album.

Lil Wayne Was ‘Praying’ For The Halftime Show Call

“I’m going to make sure this next album and everything I do is killer,” the rapper asserted. His reasoning? If the next album is undeniable, than Roc Nation and the NFL would have no choice but to book him. “I’m going make it very hard for them to [pass me up],” Lil Wayne stated. “I want to just make it hard for them not to highlight the boy.” Unfortunately, Weezy is still working on Tha Carter VI, with no release date set. JAY-Z and the Roc Nation team opted for Kendrick Lamar instead. Lil Wayne hasn’t commended on the perceived snub. His Young Money family, however, has been plenty loud.

Nicki Minaj blasted JAY-Z on Twitter. She didn’t mention names, but the allusions to Colin Kaepernick made it very clear who she was talking about. “One n**ga took a knee,” she wrote. “The other n**ga took the bag.” Birdman, meanwhile, tagged Minaj and Drake in what practically read like a declaration of war against Roc Nation. “These n**gaz P**si @NICKIMINAJ @Drake @LilTunechi YMCMB,” he tweeted out. “I’m make these n**gaz respek us on Gladys.”

Adam22 Calls Out Kendrick Lamar Amid YG’s Abysmal Album Sales

Kendrick Lamar has gotten quite a bit of flack online for not sharing anything on social media about the new album from YG, which is currently suffering from disappointing sales. Of course, this is because he was one of many artists to join K.Dot at “The Pop Out” this June. Also, there are a lot of different ways to look at this argument. Kendrick’s defenders will bring up their past collaborations, the concert itself, and their long history as more than enough support, and will also bring up that he doesn’t even use social media like that for anyone or anything. But others like Adam22 think that he could do more, and don’t understand why we let him be so mysterious even if we don’t know how he could’ve supported his West Coast colleague behind the scenes.

“What did Kendrick do for everybody?” Adam22 asked about Kendrick Lamar amid Wack 100’s complaints that Adam and others are “nitpicking” and don’t really know what’s going on between each other. “Why didn’t he post YG’s album?” Adam went on. “That’s what a lot of people want to know. *laughs* I’m just saying. After the whole L.A. got behind him so hard, does he not owe, you know, a little bit of a look here and there? Maybe do a song with somebody for their project?

Adam22 Questions Kendrick Lamar’s Intentions & Gratitude

“I mean, it doesn’t seem like the biggest ask,” Adam22 continued. “Why does everybody just allow Kendrick to just exist in this mysterious, quiet little box away from everybody? And then it’s like he’s not expected to hop on anybody’s project, to do any normal rapper s**t? I do think it’s a decent question. It would’ve been nice if Kendrick shouted out YG’s project, right? That would’ve been him behaving like a normal person, he’s so mysterious. I bet if he was still cool with Drake, Drake would’ve posted his album. They all showed up out of the goodness of their heart. It’s just kind of weird when you’re doing stuff for somebody who doesn’t want to return the favor, right?

“If Akademiks put out a documentary, and I was all up in the documentary, promoting the documentary, helped him out with the documentary. And then six months later, I put out a documentary… Crickets. Ak doesn’t shout it out, doesn’t post about it,” Adam22 concluded. “It’s pretty easy to post about something. I did a lot for you when you were in the exact same position. And you couldn’t return the favor? That makes me feel like this is kind of a one-sided friendship. Why do we not ask of Kendrick the same things that we would expect of, like, anyone else? I’m just wondering why they didn’t get something in return. It would’ve been nice. Yeah, I just think it’s weird.”

Do Compton Rappers Game And YG Have Beef?

Thanks to Kendrick Lamar and his inescapable hit “Not Like Us,” the city of Compton is back on the map in a big way. His Kendrick & Friends concert put a ton of the city’s rap talent on display, giving both veteran performers and rising stars a new chance to shine on the national level.

That included Kendrick collaborator and fellow Hub City native YG and his main producer Mustard, but oddly, didn’t include their other fellow citizen, The Game, who didn’t quite join in on the Drake hate train. In fact, some fans think Game even has beef with YG and Mustard. So, what’s going on there?

On August 28, after making some cryptic posts on Instagram Stories, Game called out the other two. But the first batch of posts and the second were unconnected, according to Game, who cleared the air in a later post. “Rooting for somebody & finding out they secretly hate u is so crazy,” he wrote initially. “Secret haters are clutch.. yall make ballin in yo face worth it.” But in another slide, he wrote, “Aye Keenon & Dijon [YG and Mustard’s real names, respectively]… Jayceon [Game’s real name] looking for y’all. Ghetto name havin n****s.” It’s fair that fans connected the two statements, making Mustard and YG out to be the “secret haters,” but in the comments of a post reporting the alleged beef, Jayceon quickly cleared the air.

“@yg & @mustard My n**gas 5L,” he wrote. “Go twist a backwood before you twist that #Bompton.” It’s more likely that his call-out was an invitation to collaborate, which the two have done more than a few times over the years. Game and YG most recently collaborated on their Compton peace walk negotiating a truce between two rival gangs in their shared hometown. So, it seems improbable that Game would be starting beef with YG now.

The Game Shuts Down Rumors That He’s Beefing With YG And Mustard

The Game loves him a good beef. Hell, he’ll take a bad beef. He spent a couple weeks trying to bait Rick Ross with a diss track, but both parties eventually admitted there was no smoke to the fire. Compton’s own has had bigger fish to fry, anyway. While the West Coast rallied around Kendrick Lamar during the Drake battle, The Game took a more diplomatic stance. Fans accused him of caping for Drake, and he was nowhere to be found when Lamar, YG and Mustard were dancing around at the Pop Out concert. That said, The Game has cleared the air regarding his relationship with his West Coast brothers.

To be fair to YG and Mustard, The Game inadvertently started the beef rumors. He got on Instagram on August 28 and started making cryptic statements about artists he didn’t like. “Rooting for somebody & finding out they secretly hate u is so crazy,” he wrote on his Stories. “Secret haters are clutch.. yall make ballin in yo face worth it.” In the post before, The Game called out YG and Mustard by their birth names, and claimed to be looking for them. “Aye Keenon & Dijon… Jayceon looking for y’all,” he added. “Ghetto name havin n**gas.” It wasn’t a stretch to assume Game was calling the rapper and producer his “secret haters.”

The Game Ranted About ‘Secret Haters’ On Instagram

It’s hard to imagine The Game misreading the situation, but he did clarify that everything was cool. He sent a follow up message after the comment section started buzzing about beef. He even used official artist names this time. “@yg & @mustard My n**gas 5L,” he wrote. “Go twist a backwood before you twist that #Bompton.” There’s evidence to suggest that everything between The Game and the other artists are cool. The Game did recently participate in YG’s peace walk earlier this month. The two also have tons of songs together, with the most recent being 2022’s “Outside.”

Game’s relationship with Mustard is less defined. They have definitely taken different approaches when it comes to Kendrick Lamar’s battle with Drake. Mustard has cut off all ties with the Toronto superstar. He said he would never work with him again. The Game, meanwhile, went on IG Live and dubbed Drake one of the best to ever pick up a microphone. Game drama shouldn’t be high on the importance list for either YG or Mustard, though. Both artists have struggled mightily with their recent albums. Some have even blamed Kendrick Lamar for their inability to move units. Learn more below.

YG’s First Week Sales Are Abysmal And Fans Blame Kendrick Lamar

YG is a proven hip-hop talent. He’s been making acclaimed albums for a decade, and he’s been featured on several hit singles. Unfortunately, the rapper’s pedigree did not translate to success for his new tape, Just Re’d Up 3. The (seemingly anticipated) third installment in his series only sold 8K in its first week. A massive downturn from his last album, I Got Issues, which moved 13,800 units in 2022. Fans were pretty surprised by the downturn. A narrative quickly developed though, and it had to do with YG’s West Coast brother, Kendrick Lamar.

The social media consensus was that Kendrick Lamar should have used his considerable success to help promote YG’s album. YG supposed Dot throughout the Drake battle. He was one of the artists who was at the Pop Out show. He also distanced himself from Drake, despite working with the Toronto rapper on two of his biggest singles. “Why didn’t Kendrick tweet or post YG’s album,” one Twitter user questioned. “Nobody find this weird??” Others took a more hostile approach, and claimed that Lamar used his West Coast peers when it was convenient, but failed to help them out in return.

Fans Think K. Dot Should Have Promoted YG’s Album

“The Pop Out show did nothing for all these artists that danced on that stage,” wrote one irate user. “They all got used for personal gain by Kendrick and nothing more. Kendrick couldn’t even give them features or post their albums. ‘West Coast united’ but did nothing for any of them after. Clown show.” YG isn’t the first artist who has suffered low album sales after linking up with Dot. DJ Mustard scored his first ever number one single when he produced Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Mustard bashed Drake in the media and happily appeared alongside Lamar in the music video. When it came time for the producer to drop his new album, though, it underperformed. Faith of a Mustard Seed only sold 18K in its first week.

Once again, fans were puzzled by Kendrick Lamar’s lack of involvement. The rapper didn’t contribute a verse to the album, nor did he bother promoting it on social media. It obviously isn’t Lamar’s job to do any of these things, but critics are beginning to piece together a narrative in which the Compton rapper has the opposite of the Drake stimulus package. In other words, a Kendrick Lamar co-sign will not help album sales. Mustard crashed out on Twitter after his album numbers were released. He still managed to sell 10K more than poor YG, though.

Drake Unveils Even More Archival ‘100 Gigs’ Content, Featuring Kanye West, The Weeknd, And Plenty More

Drake came through with a surprise earlier this month when he unveiled 100gigs.org, a website that hosted a bunch of previously unreleased material from the rapper. It turns out that wasn’t a one-and-done thing, as Drake has just added a second wave of content to the site.

As Billboard notes, the site was updated on August 25. Among the new content is some Kanye West-related clips from OVO Fest in 2013. In one video, Drake says, “I’m the biggest Ye fan, period. Sometimes I feel like I can’t like it because I gotta go against it. But that sh*t tonight was almost therapeutic.”

Kanye also says in a clip, “Me and Hov wouldn’t have made Watch The Throne if this n**** wasn’t putting pressure on us like that. So I just want to pay my respect.”

There’s also a 2014 video of Drake talking with YG and Mustard, with Drake saying over the phone, “I’m ’bout to send you a verse I did on this beat that Mustard sent me for you. […] I’m just about to record the sh*t and I’ma send it to you. Just get Future to email it and I’ll send you the verse in 30 minutes. […] I’ma send you the sh*t and let’s turn up the summer, I’m ready.”

Times have certainly changed, as Mustard now has no interest in working with “strange guy” Drake.
