Eminem Brings On WESTSIDE BOOGIE & GRIP For A “Shady Edition” Of “Fuel”

WESTSIDE BOOGIE and GRIP are two names on Eminem’s Shady Records that have shown off just how gifted they are. Both have great lyrical abilities and those are on full display on “Fuel – Shady Edition”. If you heard the original version of The Death of Slim Shady, you would remember that Eminem and JID shared the song of the same name. Overall, it’s one of the biggest highlights, if not the biggest, for us on the album.

At first, the debate was purely between who had the stronger verse on the inaugural “Fuel”. Some were even dubbing JID the winner and labeling it the best guest appearance of the year. Now, that back-and-forth has to be extended to just which version is more complete. WESTSIDE BOOGIE and GRIP make the most of their time on this tweaked track, rapping with elite proficiency about being counted out but never out for the count. Of course, sticking to “Fuel” “tradition”, Em’s got more bars for Diddy. We are also messing with the slightly darker and more low-key production switch-up too. In the end, we need some more listens, but the “Shady Edition” is giving the original a run for its money.

“Fuel – Shady Edition” – Eminem, WESTSIDE BOOGIE & GRIP

Quotable Lyrics:

I say the feelin’ I get from me killin’ a rapper just show me that Heaven exist
Shootin’ ’til ain’t nothin’ left in the clip, shootin’ ’til I get respect in this b****
I might just go get a Tec in this b****, I might just go at the ref in this b****
Guessing you think this s*** new to me, huh? Guess you ain’t know what’s fuelin’ me, huh?
I just had enemies shoot at me, tell me, just what could this industry do to me, huh?
Helpin’ the hood and the homies and plus the community think that it’s two of me, huh?

XV & WESTSIDE BOOGIE Are Puffing Their Chest Out On MIKE SUMMERS-Produced “CD-R”

XV is one of those rappers that does not seem to get enough credit. He is not a face of hip-hop, but that does not mean he is not super talented. The long-time MC hailing from Wichita, Kansas has always given listeners some fun and catchy bangers that sound good in the headphones. XV can bring the quick one-liners whenever he wants, adding to his contagious character. One track of his that has some recognition, but perhaps not enough of it, is “Awesome.” If anyone grew up playing the early 2010s NBA 2K video games that song made it onto the soundtrack.

XV even grabbed Pusha T for a version and it hits hard to this day. Hopping off the nostalgia train for a second, he is back with a new single. This one features production from MIKE SUMMERS, as well as a verse from the talented WESTSIDE BOOGIE. This is the first time we have seen these two MCs on one track and we might need more down the road.

Listen To “CD-R” By XV, MIKE SUMMERS, & WESTSIDE BOOGIE

“CD-R” is a braggadocious cut that makes a clever nod to burning songs onto CDs. XV refers to this in the chorus, saying that this song is so fire you will want to put it on a CD-R. The cover art takes a page out of the recent 1999 WRITE THE FUTURE singles with colorful discs. Be sure to give XV’s new one a listen, you will not regret it.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “CD-R,” by XV, MIKE SUMMERS, and WESTSIDE BOOGIE? Who had the better performance on the track and why? Does he need to drop a new album this year after hearing this? What is your favorite XV project and why? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. Erick The Architect And WESTSIDE BOOGIE Are Looking Out For Themselves On “Instincts”

Erick the Architect is cooking up a special album in the making and it is only a few weeks away from its release. One-third of the Flatbush Zombies is gearing up for just his second full-length in his extensive career. Erick’s first tape dropped back in 2018 and it was called Arcstrumentals, Vol. 2. While he only has one other body of work to compare this new one to, we believe this is destined to be an improvement.

The Flatbush New Yorker has put out a healthy amount of singles to tease I’ve Never Been Here Before. You can mark your calendars for February 23 to check out the 16-track offering. Erick’s most recent taster was “Ezekiel’s Wheel,” a woozy and jazzy cut featuring George Clinton. Presumably, “Instincts” will most likely be the last one we get before the album.

Listen To “Instincts” By Erick The Architect & WESTSIDE BOOGIE

If that rings true, what a note to leave off on. Erick and Shady Records signee WESTSIDE BOOGIE team up for a meditative exercise that has them paying attention to their surroundings. The introspective track sees the two lyrical MCs take into account what people and or things are damaging their mental health. They are gaining new “instincts” to avoid these pitfalls that are holding them back from succeeding. BOOGIE and Erick both bring great verses over a smooth and calming beat. This may be the best one of the bunch. However, we cannot say that too confidently seeing as how every one of them has hit so far.

What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new single, “Instincts,” by Erick the Architect and WESTSIDE BOOGIE? Is this the best track from the upcoming album so far? Out of all of the Flatbush Zombies members, where do you rank him out of the trio? Are you excited for his next album? Should Erick and WESTSIDE work together again? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Like, how the f*** you say you gang, if you around me, and not notice that I’m drained?
Take advantage of my pain, all the same
How the f*** is you my dog?
You know my loyalty won’t let me cut you off
I done seen my hands bleed from tryna plant seeds
What your bands mean when they don’t matter in the grand scheme?

Westside Boogie Drops The ‘Live At The Novo’ EP To Get Fans Excited For The Los Angeles Show

Last year, Westside Boogie unveiled More Black Superheroes, a new record featuring guests like Soulja Boy, Snoop Dogg, and more. The rapper brought some of those songs to a special NPR Tiny Desk performance. On Tuesday, March 4, he was back with new music with the surprise three-track EP Live At The Novo.

The EP comes just days before Westside actually takes the stage at The Novo in Los Angeles, set for March 16. On Instagram, he described Live At The Novo as “[something] to hold y’all over because y’all my family,” he wrote. “2 more days til the ultimate turn up.”

The songs on the EP are “Cold As Love,” “Tell Me,” and “Mood.”

Hopefully the show doesn’t get too rowdy. In July of 2022, he shared why Eminem told him never to stage-dive at a gig. “Performance-wise, he told me stop stage-diving ’cause I can get sued,” he said. “That’s just a physical thing. He don’t like how I be jumping in the crowd ’cause he said I could get sued and how he got into fight for doing that. But I just like jumping into the crowd — it’s like my thing, you know what I’m saying? So I don’t know if that’s necessarily good advice, but that’s the advice he gave me.”

Westside Boogie Brings A Team Of Tiny Superheroes To His Tiny Desk Concert

After a relatively quiet few years, emotive Compton rapper Westside Boogie made his return with the therapeutic album More Black Superheroes this June. A criminally overlooked project, More Black Superheroes finds Boogie once again ruminating on his own toxic tendencies while advocating for a more positive future.

To that end, he brought his own squad of superheroes to the NPR offices for his Tiny Desk Concert. Backed by costumed children for the finale performance of “Silent Ride,” Boogie makes a nod to the themes (and cover) of his new album. The MCU this isn’t, but then again, maybe that’s the point. The powered heroes in Marvel’s movies might be able to lift buses, but he’s on a mission to lift spirits and set some positive examples for a community that could frankly always use a few more.

During the performance, Boogie delivers soulful renditions of signature tracks from the album like “Stuck” and “Nonchalant,” employing “Float” vocalist Mamii to provide an angelic counterpoint to his sinful rhymes.

Boogie has done a lot of growing up since bursting onto the scene in 2015 with “Oh My.” He attributed at least a little bit of that growth to mentor Eminem, who advised him to slow down on reading his press. “He talked to me about not taking everything personal from blogs, ’cause it’s hard for me because my music is so genuine to me,” he said in a July interview. “So not seeing good responses sometimes frustrates me ’cause I know how much I put into it, but I think that’s every artist. Plus, coming from a neighborhood where we can’t let nobody punk us [and] gotta stand up for ourselves, when somebody come for me crazy on the internet, it’s always hard to not reply.”

Westside Boogie Explains Why Eminem Told Him To Stop Stage-Diving

Since 2017, Westside Boogie has been signed to Eminem‘s label Shady Records. Because of this, he’s been able to talk to the iconic rapper and even receive some wisdom from him about performing and taking criticism. He discussed some of this on Raquel Harper’s It’s Tricky podcast (as HipHopDX notes).

He continued, “Music advice, he talked to me about not taking everything personal from blogs, ’cause it’s hard for me because my music is so genuine to me. So not seeing good responses sometimes frustrates me ’cause I know how much I put into it, but I think that’s every artist. Plus, coming from a neighborhood where we can’t let nobody punk us, gotta stand up for ourselves, when somebody come for me crazy on the internet, it’s always hard to not reply.”

Eminem Explains How Rapping Is ‘Therapeutic’ For Him

Drake dominated the music news cycle on Friday with the surprise release of Honestly, Nevermind, but last week was actually pretty stacked for new music releases beyond that. Westside Boogie, for example, turned in the excellent new album More Black Superheroes, one of the week’s best hip-hop albums. On Friday, Boogie popped into SiriusXM’s Sway In The Morning show to promote the album and the program also got a call from his Shady Records boss, Eminem himself.

On the program, Em spoke about how rapping is “therapeutic” for him and how that connects to More Black Superheroes. He said:

“I think that’s one of the great things about rap music is that, you know, you can put so much of your life in it, you know what I mean? […] It’s therapeutic and that’s how it’s always been for me.

But with this album, with this new Boogie album — the title, everything, is f*ckin… everything’s great. And it’s like, watching him just keep getting better and better and better is incredible, too. And he’s got so much of his life weaved in this album. You know what I’m saying? Like, I think that it’s therapeutic.”
