A Journey From Bars To Grammy Nods

It’s difficult to put Vybz Kartel’s impact throughout his incarceration in words. Even while serving a sentence that could’ve left him behind bars for decades to come, there wasn’t a single party or summer where Vybz’s voice didn’t ring through the speakers. Of course, this is not solely off of his back catalog but also, his prolific output that he managed to record while imprisoned. His 2024 EP, Party With Me, dropped two months before his release, and undoubtedly had a grip on the year. More importantly, it also earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album.

The impeccable feat marked a warm welcome back for the King of Dancehall, one who has remained at the forefront of the genre for nearly two decades. His influence continuously exceeds his own genre, too. It’s hard not to look at the catalogs of Drake, Rihanna, and Major Lazer without feeling his impact and influence.

Vybz Kartel’s unwavering presence in Jamaican dancehall for over two decades has cemented him as one of the island’s most influential artists of all time.  Even after receiving a life sentence in jail, Kartel – born Adidja Azim Palmer – has remained one of if not the most relevant figures of the genre, delivering verses from his prison cell.

Some of dancehall’s biggest stars today like Spice, Popcaan and Shenseea can all credit the icon for helping put them on the map, and Cardi B, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Mick Jagger, JAY-Z and Drake are just a few of the musical icons outside of his home country of Jamaica that have professed their love and respect for his music.

The unstoppable lyricist out of Portmore, Jamaica has risen to new heights this year. He was freed from prison on July 31, 2024 when his case was overturned by the courts after serving 13 years in Jamaica. In the short time since his release, Kartel aka the Worl’ Boss earned his first GRAMMY nomination in the Best Reggae album category for his EP Party With Me, launched a new rum line, STR8 VYBZ, and will make a monumental return to the stage with his highly anticipated Freedom Street concert on December 31, 2024, at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. To top off the new year, Kartel will drop a deluxe 10th anniversary album for his seminal Viking (Vybz Is King).

Vybz Kartel’s ability to consistently churn out hit songs and albums over the past two decades, despite his extraordinary circumstances, is unparalleled. This year alone, he has released a number of singles like “Comet,” “White Rum,” and “Cloudy” and major projects, including his First Week Out album (Jul 31, 21st Hapilos Compilations), and his EP Party With Me (May 31, Adidjahiem Records). The latter, which was released while he was still incarcerated, earned Kartel his first GRAMMY nomination for Best Reggae Album. Despite uncertainty about his future, he manifested the commanding title with 8 party anthems that firmly establish that Vybz Kartel is finally outside. In January 2025, Vybz Kartel will drop a deluxe 10th anniversary edition of  his pivotal albumViking (Vybz Is King), which spawned hits like “Unstoppable,” “Gon Get Better” (sampled by pop group Fifth Harmony), “Dancehall,” and “Enchanting.” Fans can anticipate a few new bonus tracks with this re-release as well.

The Freedom Street concert will be Kartel’s first performance since he stepped back into the world, and fans can expect an epic New Year’s Eve celebration featuring a star-studded lineup, including  Spice, Popcaan, Skillibeng, Tommy Lee, Chronic Law, Shawn Storm, Lisa Hyper, Sheba, Gaza Indy, Kartel’s sons Likkle Vybz and Likkle Addi and many other surprise guests. Produced by Downsound Entertainment — the team behind Jamaica’s largest annual music festival, Sumfest—the concert is poised to be a historic moment for Kartel and his loyal fans.

In addition to the concert, Kartel has launched a new rum line, STR8 VYBZ, in partnership with TJ Records and The House of Angostura Bitters, signaling a new chapter in his entrepreneurial journey. The rum portfolio consists of four new bold flavors of white overproof,  spiced, white and dark rum, each labeled Fever, Ramping Shop, Electric, and Unstoppable, respectively. “STR8 VYBZ is more than just a rum; it’s a movement. Each bottle embodies the energy and passion of my music, and the spirit of the culture I represent,” declares Vybz Kartel. STR8 VYBZ is produced and bottled by Angostura Distillers in Trinidad and Tobago, distributed exclusively by Caribbean Producers Jamaica Ltd. (CPJ). Select retailers in the U.S., England, Bahamas, Guyana, St. Lucia, Barbados, Jamaica, and Grenada will sell STR8 VYBZ.

Vybz Kartel Proposes To Girlfriend After Getting Engaged In Prison

Vybz Kartel was sentenced to life in prison in 2014. The dancehall legend was looking at spending the rest of his days behind bars, and yet, he got engaged. He proposed to Sidem Öztürk while still locked up. Now that his sentence has been overturned, however, and he is a free man, Vybz Kartel decided to do it the right way. The Jamaican deejay posted a heartfelt video to Instagram on November 4. He decided to surprise Öztürk with an official engagement ring and a proper, down on one knee proposal. She loved it.

Vybz Kartel can be seen flashing the engagement ring to the camera before walking into a hotel room and getting on one knee. Öztürk seemed genuinely shocked by the proposal, and the two share some very romantic on camera. Vybz Kartel decided to share some more information regarding the proposal courtesy of his IG caption. “You were there when I needed you most and I’ll never leave you baby,” the musical icon stated. “I cherish all the times you came to visit me and told me that it’s going to be ok. I cherish all the times we spoke on the phone and in real life in the box.”

Vybz Kartel Claims His Fiancee Initially “Stalked” Him

Vybz Kartel also confirmed that he has now proposed to his fiancee in prison and in real life. “We laughed together we cried together and now we celebrate together,” the artist added. “You’re my best friend and my companion and I pray to God we stay together for as long as I Live. I love you.” Vybz Kartel and Sidem Öztürk linked up for the first time in 2015. The former claimed that Öztürk found him by “stalking” the IG account of his baby mama’s account. She was, evidently, committed to tracking down the so-called man of her dreams.

Öztürk provided additional context during an August interview with OnStage. She claimed that she was an enormous fan of Kartel’s music, and she just found herself drawn to him. “I found him very handsome so you can kind of call it an obsession,” she admitted. “I thought he was the most perfect man for me and walking the Earth, so I just really wanted to meet him and get to know him.” Well, Öztürk’s feeling proved to be correct. The two have been together for a shade under a decade, and are now happily engaged.

Earlier this summer, media personalities Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg of the “Juan Ep Is Life” podcast have released their latest episode featuring dancehall legend Vybz Kartel. It marks his first interview since being released from prison after serving a 13-year sentence. In the candid conversation, Vybz Kartel opens up about recording music during his incarceration, plans to marry his fiancée, and how he maintained his confidence throughout his sentence.

Kartel shared the resourceful ways he recorded music while in prison, describing how he wrapped his mattress around his head as soundproofing. On his knees, with his phone placed three feet away, Kartel laid down tracks that an outside engineer would later clean up. Notably, his hit single “Fever” was among the many songs recorded under these conditions.

The conversation also touched on Vybz Kartel’s upcoming performances, with Rosenberg confirming Kartel’s headlining show on December 31st in Jamaica. Kartel called it “the biggest concert in Jamaica since Bob Marley,” and revealed plans for additional shows across the Caribbean and South America.

Discussing his health, Kartel mentioned working with a personal trainer to prepare for his return to the stage. He expressed gratitude for the love he’s received from the Jamaican community since his release. He also thanked fans who supported him with letters and gifts during prison.

When asked about potential collaborations, Kartel expressed interest in working with Lil Wayne and praised the influence of artists like Drake and Kendrick Lamar, acknowledging their popularity in Jamaica.

Sidem Ozturk Reveals Why She Moved To Jamaica Before Vybz Kartel Was Released

Sidem Ozturk may have chastised her fiancée when he flirted with fans online, but she’s still very dedicated to Vybz Kartel. Moreover, she recently joined Gucci Mane’s wife Keyshia Ka’oir for a new interview, during which Ka’oir asked Ozturk why she moved to Jamaica even before Kartel was released from prison. As you can see from the clip below, Gucci’s girl was pretty shocked and even perhaps impressed at this show of loyalty.

“I didn’t think about [if Vybz Kartel wouldn’t be released],” Sidem Ozturk revealed. “That was not an option. […] Honestly, [my family] didn’t know at first. *laughs* They didn’t know at first. It was just, like, he asked me to come. And then from there, it was just, how can I say no? And then my family, I’ve never lived apart from my family. So it was a bit – they didn’t really know how deep it was. I didn’t really tell anyone except for my friends how deep it really was. And then, I just, I couldn’t say no. And I just flew out, and my mom later found out that I flew out for him.

Sidem Ozturk Flew Out For Vybz Kartel Before His Release

“So you’re persistent,” Keyshia Ka’oir told Sidem Ozturk when she began telling her Vybz Kartel story. “This is what you call faith, guys. Like, you are filled with faith. Like, ‘I’m moving to Jamaica. This is going to be my man, and he’s coming out of prison, and can’t nobody stop me.’” Of course, fans most likely know at this point how much Ozturk and Kartel have professed their love for one another on social media. It’s been quite wholesome to witness, especially when paired up with his return to live performances and releasing more music.

Meanwhile, Vybz Kartel recently gave fans another health update. For those unaware, he suffers from an auto-immune disorder known as Graves’ disease, which has affected his heart condition. How Did Vybz Kartel Make Music in Jail?

Vybz Kartel is back home. However, one thing that has lingered on everyone’s mind is how he managed to remain as prolific as he did behind bars. Sure, there’s no doubt that he recorded an incredible amount of music before he was sentenced to life in prison in 2014 for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. However, the fact that for over 13 years, he continuously dominated the summers and released countless singles and projects has raised many questions surrounding his studio circumstances.

Kartel, who has been a cornerstone of dancehall, was released from prison earlier this year after he successfully won his appeal. Shortly after, he released his 12-song mixtape, First Week Out – a testament to his efficient creative flow. As he does the rounds with the media, he’s finally unveiled his secret to maintaining his relevance in the music industry throughout all these years.

Background

Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, was embroiled in a highly publicized criminal case since 2011. He was convicted in 2014 for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams, a charge that has led to a life sentence. The case has been controversial. Kartel maintained his innocence and his legal team highlighted procedural issues during the trial, including concerns about juror bias and the mishandling of evidence. In 2024, the UK Privy Council quashed his conviction, citing these procedural flaws, and Kartel is now a free man.

Rumors Of A Prison Studio

Over the years, several rumors ran rampant surrounding the circumstances that allowed Vybz Kartel to record and release music while incarcerated. Since recording music is unauthorized in prison, some suggested that he had privileged access to a professional studio, which was never actually proven. Others believed that the vault of unreleased music he left behind had enough songs to flood the streets.

It remained a mystery throughout his sentence, and in 2020, he fueled speculation even further in an interview with Billboard. “It’s a secret like the Colonel’s recipe. The true secret to success is commitment, hard work, smart work, self-analysis and most important, humility,” he responded. “Once I face a riddim (rhythm track), I’m not worldboss, just a man with a pen, paper and a track. Other artists are working hard, so I think it’s just the formula.”

When asked exactly how he’s produced so much work given his circumstances, he responded, “Many people say YES! VYBZ IS RECORDING IN PRISON!! But where’s the proof? But this is Jamaica where you don’t need proof to imprison someone. For the record, I’m not authorized to answer such ‘above pay grade’ questions so I’ll say, ‘a tree fell in the forest and no one was there to hear it.’”

Vybz Reveals His Secrets

During a recent appearance on the Juan Ep Is Life podcast, Vybz Kartel provided a rare glimpse into his life during his incarceration. He discussed his ongoing battle with Graves’ Disease, the first thing he did upon his release, and so much more. However, the most notable part of the interview came when Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg delved into the logistics of Kartel’s ability to continuously release music.

Kartel explained he was able to release music through a backlog of unreleased songs. “In the first year, we had songs unreleased,” said Kartel. “But then the songs ran out and we had to do what we had to do. That’s when I started recording behind bars.” This ultimately led him to get creative by using nothing more than an iPhone.

Vybz Kartel Makeshift Studio

Kartel’s method was nothing short of ingenious. Without access to a professional studio, he improvised by using his prison-issued mattress to create a makeshift sound booth. He explained how he would position his iPhone a few feet away from his face. Then, he would wrap the mattress around his head to muffle any unwanted noise. This setup allowed him to capture vocals with surprisingly good sound quality. Afterward, he would then send it to a trusted engineer on the outside.

“I would have to Deejay directly into the iPhone,” he explained. “I would have the phone, like, 3 feet from my face and I would wrap the mattress around my head and record. It was crazy,” he explained. He used an iPad to play the instrumental while recording his vocals on the iPhone. Vybz would then send the vocals to an engineer who would mix it to sound crisp and professional.

The Inception Of “Fever”

One of Vybz Kartel’s biggest songs came during his incarceration with “Fever.” The song, which appeared on his 2016 album, King Of Dancehall, has since earned over 100 million streams on Spotify alone, according to Billboard. However, because of the rules in prison, he had to sneakily record music at odd hours of the day. “Most of the time, we had to record like at night but sometimes, it had to be like 12 o’clock when most of the officers would be on like lunch break and I would still have to be watching,” he explained. “So I’d be like, ‘fever!’ and then I’d have to get up and look. It was crazy. It was line by line!”

What’s Next For Vybz Kartel?

The expansive interview touches on several topics including some live performances, both in Jamaica and abroad. Currently, he’s planning for his comeback show on December 31st, 2024 – the Freedom Street Concert, taking place in Kingston, Jamaica. Hopefully, he’ll be touching the United States in the future. But for now, we’re happy that he’s back home.

Cardi B Blasts People Making Fun Of Vybz Kartel’s Appearance

Cardi B is known to have some pretty strong stances on a whole lot of different matters online, and she’s not afraid to make that very clear. Moreover, she recently went on a mini Twitter Spaces rant seemingly talking about how people are making fun of Vybz Kartel’s lighter skin following his release from prison. Although Bardi didn’t explicitly make note of this specific issue in the clip below, it’s not hard to connect the dots when you look at much of the discussion surrounding the dancehall icon on the Internet. Either way, she took issue with how people are talking about him these days and will not tolerate any slander in her vicinity.

“I do not play about f***ing Vybz Kartel,” Cardi B’s rant about the haters began. “When I see y’all f***ing Americans… No offense, no offense. I mean, I’m American, but when I see y’all talking about f***ing Vybz Kartel, I be getting upset ’cause, like, not too much. Not too f***ing much. Mind your f***ing business. Now, all she has to do is pick between them and decide on a final candidate, although we’re sure that some alternate covers will also emerge.
