The Golden Globes® have announced Viola Davis as the 2025 Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree. Recognized for her exceptional contributions to entertainment, Davis joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including Sidney Poitier, Robert Redford, Oprah Winfrey, and Denzel Washington, her Fences co-star and fellow Cecil B. DeMille Award winner.
“Viola Davis is a luminary whose profound talent has continuously shifted the lens through which we see and understand film,” stated Helen Hoehne, President of the Golden Globes. “Presenting her with the 2025 Cecil B. DeMille Award is not only an honor but a reflection of our admiration for her relentless dedication to her craft and her monumental impact on the industry. Viola’s courage in portraying complex, powerful characters has broken barriers and paved new paths, making her an emblem of excellence and an ideal recipient of this prestigious award.”
Davis, an EGOT recipient, earned her first Golden Globe in 2017 for her role in Fences. Renowned for her powerful performances and activism, she was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2017 and received the Public Counsel’s William O. Douglas Award in 2022 for her dedication to social justice.
In 2012, Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon, founded JuVee Productions to champion underrepresented voices. The production company develops socially relevant content across various platforms and is celebrated for its commitment to inclusion and innovation.
A graduate of The Juilliard School, where she holds an honorary doctorate, Davis also earned an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from her alma mater, Rhode Island College.
Davis will be celebrated at a special gala dinner on Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, alongside the 2025 Carol Burnett Award recipient. This marks the first time the Golden Globes will dedicate a separate evening to these prestigious honors.
The Golden Globes, the season’s first major awards show, will air Sunday, January 5, 2025, on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Nominations will be announced on December 9, 2024.
The 2023 BET Awards are only a few days away, and the nominations are out. On the 25th of June, the ceremony will be held in Los Angeles, California at the Microsoft Theater. Although a host is yet to be announced, one should be revealed within the next couple of days. However, one major category that’s garnered attention is that of the Best Actress.
At the previous year’s ceremony, the number of nominees increased from six to nine, but the number has been brought down to seven in 2023. Currently holding the title is Zendaya, who won for her roles in HBO’s Euphoria and Spider-Man: No Way Home. First-time nominees include Abbot Elementary’s standout star Janelle James, as well as Keke Palmer for her star-elevating turn in the Western horror movie, Nope.
The competition is as tight as ever. Regardless, here are all the seven nominees up for Best Actress at the 2023 BET Awards.
Angela Bassett
Angela Bassett has already made history as the first MCU actor to earn an acting award at major awards ceremonies. So it’s no surprise that she’s once again earned another nod at the upcoming BET Awards. Bassett’s nomination for Best Actress officially makes her the most nominated woman in the history of the category. She has been up for the trophy eleven times in the past, and this year marks her twelfth time.
Unfortunately, she’s yet to snag the award, but her recent win streak might spell a different tale this year. In addition to her work as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Basset’s nod also recognizes her work in television. Her leading role as Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash on the procedural drama 9-1-1 has been continuously commended.
Last year, Coco Jones earned her first Best Actress nod at the BET Awards. This was thanks to her fabulous reimagination of Hilary Banks in Bel-Air. Jones has received widespread acclaim for her portrayal of the character. She has served to introduce the character to a new generation of viewers while maintaining the spunk of the original. Besides the Best Actress nod, Jones is also up for the 2023 BET Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, due to her stellar year as a musician.
Janelle James has been making people laugh for decades, but her breakthrough role on Abbott Elementary has been truly exceptional. James stars as Principal Ava in the comedy mockumentary, and her hilarious role has been constantly praised by fans and critics alike. 2023 marks James’ first Best Actress nomination at the BET Awards. As Abbott Elementary has already been renewed for a third season, there are probably a couple more nods for the actress in the future.
Janelle Monáe‘s first Best Actress nomination at the BET Awards came in 2017. Her brilliant performance in the biographical drama Hidden Figures was greatly praised. She lost the award to her co-star, Taraji P. Henson, but this year, she’s up for the trophy once again for her performance in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. In the movie, Monáe won the audience and critics over by playing the role of twin sisters Helen and Andi. Her contrasting performance was a standout in the film.
Keke Palmer has received her first-ever Best Actress nomination at the 2023 BET Awards. This recognition comes as a result of her highly acclaimed role in the Jordan Peele horror, Nope. Palmer played Emerald Haywood, the curious, outspoken sister of OJ Haywood, played by Daniel Kaluuya. Their unique performances were praised, with Palmer singled out for her incredible talents on screen. Furthermore, her voice acting on the animated series Human Resources was also lauded and is also part of why she’s up for the trophy.
With seven nods for Best Actress, Viola Davis is one of the most nominated women in the history of the BET Awards. She won in 2012 for her roles in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, as well as The Help. Davis is one of the most awarded actresses of her generation. It’s no surprise that her performance in epic drama The Woman King has garnered yet another nod.
Davis worked tirelessly to get in warrior shape for her role in the film, and she completely knocked it out of the park. While she has earned nods for her acting in film, the bulk of her nominations are thanks to her stellar performance in the legal drama How to Get Away With Murder.
Zendaya is currently the Best Actress holder at the BET Awards. Her win in 2022 came as a result of her gritty, emotional performance in the HBO teen drama, Euphoria. Coupled with that, her role in Spider-Man: No Way Home was also recognized. Although Euphoria has enjoyed its fair share of criticisms since its premiere, Zendaya’s acting has constantly been on the receiving end of praise.

Before the Ben Affleck-directed film trailer is played during the Super Bowl (an advertisement with a hefty $7 million price point), Amazon dropped the first official trailer for Air. MGM will release the film exclusively to theaters on April 5, 2023 on over 3,000 screens throughout the United States. After its theatrical release, the film will be available for streaming. The film is Affleck’s highly anticipated directorial follow up to his 2016 film, “Live by Night,” as well as 2012’s best picture, “Argo.”

Starring with them is Viola Davis, who will play Michael Jordan’s mother, Deloris Jordan.

Emmy, Oscar, and Tony winning-actress Viola Davis joined the list of celebrities with EGOT status during the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. The award-winning actress won the “Spoken Word Album” category. Updated By: Kendall Parks (2/6/23 at 5:40 pm) Viola Davis found her way to a new list of iconic celebrities who have reached EGOT status. […]
BBC has apologized for sharing an image in which they captioned a photo of Viola Davis, “Beyoncé’s Big Night.” The network made the mistake during a broadcast on its news channel after the 2023 Grammy Awards. They later apologized in a statement on Twitter. BBC says that the error was not a case of mistaken identity but instead a technical issue.
“We apologize for the mistake last night when our news channels briefly showed a photograph of Viola Davis from January’s Golden Globes alongside a headline about Beyoncé at yesterday’s Grammys,” BBC said in the statement.
One journalist for the outlet added that the issue pertained to a “sequence about the other Grammy winners.” This is why it had indicated “Beyoncé’s big night.”
As for it being “Beyoncé’s big night,” the headline stemmed from the fact that the legendary singer became the most awarded artist in Grammys’ history. Following victories for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album, Best R&B Song, and more, Beyoncé reached 32 career wins. She also tied her husband, Jay-Z, for the most nominations of all time. Despite the success, Beyoncé was unable to take home the award for Album of the Year. Instead, that honor went to Harry Styles for Harry’s House. Jay-Z slammed the decision in an interview with Tidal published the next morning.
“I remove myself from the process and hope they just get it right,” he told Elliott Wilson for the piece. “It got to the point where I was like, it’s just a marketing thing. You go, you got an album out and it could help the sales go up.”
It was also a big night for Viola Davis, who achieved the rare EGOT status. She won Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording. The Recording Academy awarded her for her performance of the audiobook for her memoir Finding Me. Check out BBC’s controversial graphic featuring Viola Davis named Beyoncé below, as well as the outlet’s apology.
Viola Davis has achieved the extremely rare EGOT status, meaning she’s won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. She’s earned the honor with a win for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording. The Recording Academy awarded her for her performance of the audiobook for her memoir Finding Me. Davis accepted the award during the 2023 Grammys ceremony, Sunday.
“Oh, my god. I wrote this book to honor the six-year-old Viola. To honor her, her life, her joy, her trauma, everything,” Davis said, before adding, “It has just been such a journey. I just EGOT! Thank you, Harper Collins, Lavaille Lavette, you epitomize sister friend. And really, to everybody who was part of my story. And the best chapter yet, my loves: Julius, Genesis. You are my life, My joy. you are the best chapter in this book. Thank you.”
With the victory, Davis joins other EGOT winnersJohn Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Richard Rodgers, Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn, as well as Rita Moreno. She’s additionally just the third Black woman in history to achieve the honor. Davis won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for Fences. In 2015, she earned an Emmy for her leading role in How to Get Away with Murder. She also has Tony awards for King Hedley II as well as the Broadway production of Fences.
Davis previously admitted that winning an EGOT would be a “huge accomplishment” for her. She explained what it would mean to her during an interview in January.
“I feel this way, even though it’s probably a very dramatic statement on my part: I think that everybody wants their life to mean something. I believe in the Cherokee birth blessing, which is ‘May you live long enough to know why you were born.’ I do believe that you literally wanna blow a hole through this world in whatever way you can,” Davis explained, before elaborating, “A lot of people don’t know how to do that. A lot of people haven’t found that thing that they’re passionate about, that they can do. Some have. But we all are looking for that, blowing a hole through this earth before we leave it. I think about that in my work a lot. I really found that thing that I love to do. So I always wanna make it meaningful.”
Viola Davis has joined an exclusive club. Tonight during the 65th GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony, the access was awarded the Grammy for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording for her Finding Me memoir, earning her EGOT status. Only 17 other entertainers have earned the coveted designation, and Davis makes history by being the 18th.
The acronym, which stands for the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards, is a significant designation given to people who have won all four major entertainment awards. Past EGOT winners include Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, and more.

This year, Davis found herself going up against four other previous Grammy winners, including Jamie Foxx (“Act Like You Got Some Sense”), Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World”), Questlove (“Music is History”) and fellow EGOT recipient Mel Brooks (“All About Me!: My Remarkable Life in Show Business”).
Davis will be able to add her new title alongside her two Tony Awards (“King Hedley II,” “Fences”), her Oscar (the film adaptation of “Fences”), and her Emmy (“How to Get Away with Murder”), for which she became the first black actress to win.
Despite Davis being snubbed by the Academy Awards this year, the Woman King actress still made history. With a career spanning over three decades, the actress has undoubtedly earned her flowers.
