Kendrick Lamar & SZA Make Magic On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Welcome back to our R&B Season playlist, the latest update for which has some of the very best genre-adjacent releases that came out this week. We have a big release to talk about that you’ve probably already bumped, and that’s obviously the new Kendrick Lamar album, GNX. While it’s mostly pretty fiery songs and performances, there are some softer cuts on here that are also excellent, two of which feature SZA. “luther” in particular is a very tender, woozy, and calming jam with a wonderful sample flip, gorgeous progressions, and some awesome interplay between both vocalists that we loved to hear back from after so long.

Next up is the new single from Savannah Ré, “Sex With My Ex.” As you can probably tell from the title, it’s a pretty conflicted push-and-pull lyrically, and one whose soft piano keys and often intruding sample kind of reflect that sense of complication. The vocal performance is pretty smoky, but it definitely has its more impressive runs that emphasize Ré’s melodies. Overall, it’s a pretty dark and sensual cut that might’ve benefitted from more involved percussion, but their stark sound as it is works just fine, too.

Finally, we wanted to give a shoutout to the Unlocked edition of the British R&B group FLO’s latest album, Access All Areas. They have some interesting remixes, guest performances, and re-imaginings that weren’t there on the original effort, including some fitting and charismatic performances from the Bailey sisters, Chlöe and Halle, on a new version of “Soft.” It’s exactly what it sounds like, as light snaps, simple synth pads, and tight vocal harmonies give a lot of boisterous flair to an otherwise pleasant soundscape.

Roy Woods Is As Smooth As Ever On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Welcome back to our R&B Season playlist, whose latest update rounded up the best of the best releases of the week pertaining to the genre’s orbit. To start, we have to shout out the new single from Roy Woods, as “Rockstar Baby” is a very smooth and charismatic cut. It fuses some elements of woozy, psychedelic, but nonetheless hard-hitting trap with passionate vocal runs, light string embellishments, and what sound like some The Weeknd-inspired deliveries and flows. It’s energetic enough to perk your ear up and engage you in the sound, but chilled-out enough to let you sit back and enjoy the vibes.

As for more genre fusions in the R&B world, Jessie Reyez and Ari Lennox teamed up for a slightly dancehall-inspired and relaxing collab, “JUST LIKE THAT.” Both vocalists share a lot of vocal chemistry on the track thanks to their whispered harmonies and more powerful exclamations, and the acoustic guitar is a very tender anchor to the cut’s atmosphere. The drums are very light as well, keeping things simple so your attention mostly goes to the singers’ melodic prowess.

Elsewhere on R&B Season, we have more dreamy and somewhat melancholy fare, such as Chase Shakur’s new song “2ofUs.” The big draw behind this record on impact is the slick, crisp, and steady drum break that energizes an otherwise ethereal and minimal sonic pallet. Chase’s voice remains buttery throughout, mixing in well with the synth pads and keys embellishments. However, the single also adds some subtle melodic elements here and there to flesh this aspect of it out, namely some floating synthesizers and background vocals that harmonize with ease.

Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention Nao’s chilling, wondrous, but still funky new jam, “Elevate.” The high-pitched vocal delivery offsets you a little bit on impact, but by the time it matches with dramatic chords, slow-burning and cavernous drums, and a buzzing electric guitar solo, it fully reaches its evocative potential. Cordae Meets Us At “The Crossroads” On Our New “Fire Emoji” Playlist Update: Stream

2024 is still continuing its run as a great hip-hop year, and as you’ll see on our latest Fire Emoji playlist update, new releases this week are no different. First up is the new and long-awaited album from Cordae, The Crossroads, whose only feat more impressive than its stellar guest list is the amount of growth that the North Carolina rapper displays here. There are boisterous bangers, introspective jams, a real hunger to be the best MC possible, and plenty of soulful instrumentation. As far as specific highlights, we’d recommend “No Bad News” with Kanye West as a great taster.

Speaking of new albums on Fire Emoji, we also wanted to shout out Denzel Curry’s expanded version of his KING OF THE MISCHIEVOUS SOUTH Vol. 2 mixtape. The new records are pretty gritty and hard-hitting, and “GOT ME GEEKED” specifically unlocked a new flow for Zeltron that shows he’s still as dynamic as ever on the mic. Another fresh LP to talk about is the return of Young Nudy and Pi’erre Bourne, as they linked up for another full-length with Sli’merre 2. It’s just as woozy, chilled-out, and wavy as you would expect, as songs like “Get Fu*ked Up” exemplify their chemistry.

Finally, we wanted to point you to NBA YoungBoy’s new project I Just Got A Lot On My Shoulders, the latest installment in this prolific catalog. Not every cut on here is as outwardly aggressive as you might expect though, such as the light melodies and atmospheric pads on “Killa Season” that saves all the bravado for YB’s mic performance. As for new singles on Fire Emoji, the big highlight is Juice WRLD and Nicki Minaj’s “All Girls Are The Same” remix. “AGATS2 (Insecure)” is a dreamy reimagining of the iconic original, and the Trinidadian femcee fits very well on this dramatic new version.

Also, Ray Vaughn continues to prove himself as a passionate lyricist on “EAST CHATT” with a killer Isaiah Rashad feature. To round things out, we have Lil Baby’s “5AM,” which is one of his most creative sample flips and flow performances as of late. Mario Is “Glad You Came” To Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Even though the year is starting to die down a bit as far as new music releases, we still have some gems to talk about on our latest R&B Season playlist update. First off, we have two new records from Jorja Smith on her most recent two-pack: “Loving You” featuring Maverick Sabre and “Don’t Let Me Go.” The former is a piano-led ballad with lovelorn lyrics, a gorgeous vocal performance, soft snaps, and grand harmonies to beef the cut up a little bit. As for the latter, it’s a soft acoustic guitar track along a similarly romantic and melancholy line, with vocal harmonies that serve more as emphasis than the building swells of the other song.

Elsewhere on R&B Season, we also wanted to shout out another collection of a few loosies, Ella Mai’s 3 EP. As the title suggests, these three new records are pretty distinct from each other, with “One Of These” being a peppy and highly percussive brass cut and “Little Things” being more of a smooth, woozy journey over a trap beat. For our money, though, the highlight is definitely “Hearts On Deck” thanks to its warm bass, glistening synth keys, catchy melodies, and a simple but grounded snap-based instrumental.

Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention the ongoing return of one of the R&B world’s most beloved stars of the early 2000s. Mario brought a lot of soul and class to his latest single “Glad You Came,” built around a crisp and groovy drum kit, light piano flutters, and gliding vocal runs. The heartwarming record definitely embodies its comforting and optimistic lyrical matter in its sonic presentation, as it doesn’t feel overly dramatic or bombastic. If there was any doubt if he still had it, you can cross that skepticism off.

Ab-Soul Cooks Up On Our New “Fire Emoji” Playlist Update: Stream

If you’re in the United States and are looking for some new music to cool you down after the election, then look no further than our latest Fire Emoji playlist update with the best new hip-hop this week. To kick things off, we want to shout out the new album from Ab-Soul, Soul Burger, for its variety, resonance, and dizzying lyricism. There’s a little something for everyone on here, whether that’s more icy and hard-hitting West Coast bangers, moments of patient introspection, and more lively and quirky melodic shimmers. As far as specific highlights, we’d recommend “Righteous Man” as a very solid first taste for you to see if you’re interested to dive in.

Speaking of new albums on Fire Emoji this week, we’d be remiss not to mention Ferg’s new LP DAROLD, which is a curious mix of his old and new styles. Some cuts, like the nasty “Demons” featuring Denzel Curry, exemplify the larger-than-life trap and street rap that the Harlem MC has always done so well. But further on into the tracklist, some revealing, somber, and more thoughtful records reveal another side to that bravado in a blunt but effective way.

Moving on, we’ve got one more album to talk about this week, and that’s SahBabii’s latest, Saaheem. For fans of simple plugg and charismatic vocal deliveries, this is a big rec on Fire Emoji, especially the wavy and minimal “All The Way.” As far as new singles, Cordae offered a soulful, muted, but still impressive collaboration in the form of “Syrup Sandwiches” with assistance from Joey Bada$$. The guitar loops are very watery and reverb-heavy, but each spitter’s focused and effortless flows do a lot to elevate that atmosphere.

Diddy’s Alleged “Freak Off” NDA Was Reportedly Standard For All Studio Sessions

Earlier this month, TMZ reported that Diddy allegedly had all his freak-off participants sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Reportedly, the document stated that signees could not record, photograph, or film Diddy or his crew without prior written permission. It also reportedly stated that signees could not write books or do interviews about their experiences.

“The terms of this agreement and duty to keep all information confidential and not use Prohibited Material shall commence on the first date above and continue for the life of Artist plus 20 years or seventy (70) years, which is longer,” it read. Now, however, The Neighborhood Talk reports that this was a standard NDA Diddy allegedly had anyone doing music or other business with him sign. This means it was not limited to alleged freak-off participants despite previous reports.

This is far from the only accusation Diddy’s been hit with as of late, however. The Bad Boy founder is currently behind bars for charges related to alleged sex trafficking and racketeering. He’s also facing various lawsuits from several women and men accusing him of sexual assault and more. He’s denied any and all wrongdoing aside from the assault of Cassie captured in security footage that surfaced this summer.

Last week, his attorneys Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos asked the judge presiding over Diddy’s case to order potential witnesses and their attorneys to stop speaking to the media. They claim there’s been a “deluge of improper pretrial publicity.” They also allege that this is “undermining Mr. Combs’ right to a fair trial and the integrity of the grand jury proceedings.” What do you think of The Neighborhood Talk reporting that Diddy’s alleged NDA that surfaced last week is just a standard NDA? Jacquees Steals The Show On Our New “R&B Season” Update: Stream

As the year starts to close out, the music industry as a whole is slowing down a bit with its new releases. But we still have a couple of killer tracks to share from the R&B world on our latest R&B Season playlist update, including a selection from Jacquees’ new aptly titled album, Baby Making. It’s a big blend of a lot of what makes the genre so great, and what has made fans appreciate him for so long. The track “Touchdown” in particular is what we want to point you to, with its slow-burning drums, light guitar licks to kick it off, and some subtle but welcome background vocal harmonies.

Next up on our R&B Season playlist update is the new single from Lola Young, “Charlie” featuring Lil Yachty. It’s a fitting link-up given their musical styles, and one that starts off pretty smoky and intimate. The lengthy cut builds little by little with some muted and evolving drums, gruff electric guitar riffs, and soaring vocals from Lola. Yachty eventually breaks through with a steady but still enveloping flow that transitions from a verse to some great melodies.

Finally, Cleo Sol’s new cut “Fear When You Fly” is a very tender and soothing guitar-led ballad that’s also very patient. It’s not until over a third of the way in that the drums come in. Most importantly, it’s probably the most passionate vocal performance on all this R&B Season update, beautifully balancing soars and soft-spoken affirmations seemingly about companionship. It’s mostly a minimal cut, but small yet effective additions of brass and background vocals give it that extra kick.

Tyler, The Creator Finds His Way Home On Our Stacked New “Fire Emoji” Playlist Update: Stream

Halloween is over, and hip-hop gave us one of its most stacked release weeks all year. As such, we rounded up the best of the best on our latest Fire Emoji playlist update, and there’s one artist who blew the game up at the top of the week. Tyler, The Creator dropped CHROMAKOPIA, his new album with very little lead-up but a powerful one nonetheless. It helps that it’s full of not just some of his most personal material ever, but also some of his hardest and most fun bangers across his career. If you haven’t already been bumping cuts like “Rah Tah Tah” and “Sticky” with GloRilla, Sexyy Red, and Lil Wayne, give it a shot to electrify your day.

Elsewhere on Fire Emoji, we have other hot new projects to talk about that fans have been waiting on for a long time. Freddie Gibbs finally returned with his new album You Only Die 1nce, and cuts like “Brick Fees” display why he’s one of the coldest rappers in the game. Also, Lil Uzi Vert went wild and unfiltered on Eternal Atake 2, and we’d recommend the energetic “Light Year (Practice)” as a solid taster. Finally, Westside Gunn actually dropped two projects this week, but the main event is Still Praying, on which “Free Shots” with DJ Drama and Conway The Machine is a particularly gritty highlight.

Meanwhile, Fire Emoji also contains the week’s hottest singles, including the “SOUTH OF FRANCE” remix with Future and Travis Scott. In addition, JID and Ab-Soul joined forces for a menacing, lyrically dense, and wholly fitting collab, “Crazier.” The drums on here focus up the bars and add a welcome sense of suspense that both MCs don’t always tap into, but handle with skill.

Rounding things out is the Waka Flocka Flame-tributing “STILL IN THE PAINT” from Denzel Curry, LAZER DIM 700, and Bktherula. Young Thug Accepts Plea Deal In YSL RICO Case

Young Thug has reportedly accepted a plea deal in the YSL RICO case, according to reporter Thugger Daily and court footage, and could go home today (Thursday, October 31). It’s unclear what the judge will decide as his sentence, what the plea deal entails, and other details. However, we know that this is reportedly a non-negotiated plea, which reportedly means that the judge will have the final sentencing say. The defense will ask for their ideal outcome, the state will follow with theirs, and then the judge will decide. This comes after various other plea deals in the YSL RICO case following some key deliberations over a potential mistrial and errors by the State.

Speaking of which, the State recommended a 45-year sentence with 25 years to serve followed by 20 on probation. Young Thug also affirmed in court that he was aware of the State’s previous offer that he and his team turned down in favor of this non-negotiated plea. In addition, his legal team clarified that he could have gone home today for 15 years on probation if he successfully completed said probation. Thugger wouldn’t have had to go into custody if he accepted this previous offer in question. If not, he faced probation revocation and 23 years “backloaded” in the Georgia prison system. The Atlanta rapper’s attorney Brian Steel expressed that they “could not come to terms on all the conditions that the District Attorney was insisting upon.”

Furthermore, Young Thug pleaded guilty to all counts in his indictment except the RICO count and the gang leader count. He pleaded “nolo contendre,” which basically means he neither admits nor denies the charges and simply agrees to accept them with the sentence and the fine. The State asked the court to deny this nolo plea and to only accept a guilty or non-guilty plea for those charges. However, the judge admitted this nolo plea.

Also, the State reportedly asked to seize all of Young Thug’s property such as cars and jewelry, which he did not agree with. As this is all still very early in development, it’s unclear what this will result in for the YSL RICO case. But it seems like it’s almost over.

Summer Walker Pours Her Heart Out On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

As October comes to a close, our latest R&B Season playlist update rounded up the best of the best genre-related cuts that dropped this week to give you some new jams for the spooky season. First off, Summer Walker made her return with her new single “Heart Of A Woman,” which contains an unsurprisingly soulful and soothing vocal performance. A relationship is on the rocks here lyrically, and the instrumental highlight here is a deliciously woozy synth line that falls really well in the background. Elsewhere, stark drums and watery synth pads flesh the cut out to create a pretty intoxicating atmosphere.

Keeping those sultry R&B vibes up is the latest record from Shanuka, “Wicked” with Wakai. This is even more of a slow-burner, as the choppy but resonant bass tone gives the song a languid but wholly hypnotizing feel that’s bolstered by dreamy synths and some percussive embellishments. There’s also a nasal rap verse on here that fits the cut’s smoky vibe like a glove, amping up the lust and addictive desire that the lyrics display. In other words, it’s a great late night drive track.

As for more tender offerings on R&B Season this week, Fridayy came through with the lush and passionate single “Back To You.” Thanks to some gorgeous background vocals, light piano keys, his trademark deep voice, and some varied drums on the song, this dramatizes an infatuation with a lot of personality and steadily building melodies. If you’re looking for something a bit more akin to a hip-hop beat, then perhaps Roy Woods’ latest record “Hold Still” will be right up your alley. But don’t think that he doesn’t still come through with some hazy vocal harmonies and melodic dominance.

Finally, we wanted to give a shoutout to AUDRÉ’s new song “U on U” for its striking but minimal guitar lines that do a lot with a little. They anchor the rest of the single’s elements thanks to their presence in the mix, but the highlight here is still her vocal performance.
