(Like) / Two-fifty to get in the booth (Damn).” These are seemingly direct shots at Latto, who has been showing her disdain for her fellow femcee for some time, especially on “Sunday Service.” This second single for Y2K! sees Ice Spice sample a 2000’s Sean Paul classic “Gimme the Light.” RIOTUSA, her wingman, slow down the lyrics, before Spice hops in raps with aggression in a higher register. This track might not be as popular as “Think U The S***,” but it is a solid track for the album.

Happy 54th birthday to Ghostface Killah, one of the best to ever rap. As a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, he’s been engrained in hip-hop culture for the part 30 years now. In fact, it’s not hard to see the collective as a whole’s influence in the contemporary generation of MCs. Many within the Wu and within the Griselda crew have pointed out the kindred spirit between them, and any gritty lyricist you love today has roots in the Shaolin land. Of course, it’s thanks to revered spitters like Ghost that this cultural and artistic connection exists, but don’t think that history and time have eroded his untouchable qualities as a wordsmith and storyteller.
On albums like Ironman (1996), Supreme Clientele (2000), and 2006’s Fishscale (plus, hopefully, the upcoming Set The ToneLP), you’ll find plenty of vivid imagery, staggering wordplay, and cinematic storytelling, but don’t think that’s where the buck stopped. Tony Starks continued to collaborate prolifically, play with new conceptualizations of tried-and-true ideas, and process more experiences to turn into excellence. You can determine for yourself whether these Ghostface Killah songs (solo material, not feature verses) match up to his most classic work. But you’d be a fool to label him anything less than one of the greatest hip-hop artists alive, or to classify some of his 2010s and 2020s output as undeserving of that praise.
“Love Don’t Live Here No More” Feat. Kandace Springs – 36 Seasons (2014)
In chronological order, we start with Ghostface Killah’s 2014 concept album 36 Seasons, centering around Tony’s return home after nine years behind bars. This is one of the opening cuts, and narrates how much he looked forward to seeing his girl after so long. Through detailed narration, a tender instrumental, and conflicting emotions about loyalty and loneliness from both romantic parties, Ghost creates a very hard-hitting cut. It’s an amazing sample flip to boot, and suggestive lines like “Gone for 9 years like 9 months to a child” give some more depth to what this love’s dynamic actually looks like.
“Six Degrees” Feat. Danny Brown – Sour Soul With BADBADNOTGOOD (2015)
Over one of the oddest instrumentals Ghostface Killah’s tackled over the last decade, he crafts really striking chemistry with none other than Danny Brown. Hearing the vocal contrast between the former’s composed force and the latter’s unleashed yelps is a true treat, especially when the beat switches between stronger boom-bap drums and swings and more jazzy, eerie, and syncopation-focused percussion. It’s no wonder the instrumental can come across so haunting with lines like, “Sixth sense, six pack, six degrees of separation / My evil third eye blinks with no hesitation” sticking in your head. Heavily reverbed and cavernous guitar plucks, woozy tones, and an overall minimal atmosphere really emphasize the hedonistic nature of their boasting.
“Resurrection Morning” Feat. Raekwon & Bilal – Twelve Reasons To Die II With Adriane Young (2015)
Ghostface Killah’s known to be larger than life: overwhelming orchestral instrumentation, energetic verses of life’s realities and mysteries… the whole shebang. But over the past decade, few collaborations or tracks in his catalog are quite as passionate, evocative, or dramatic as this one, which centers around a man sacrificing himself seemingly to exact revenge to achieve atonement or to curse another. Whether it’s choral vocals, ringing organ chords, hard-hitting boom-bap drums, electric guitar strums, or uplifting piano arpeggios, “Resurrection Morning” really gives weight behind gut-punching lyrics like, “Murderer, take lives like mine’s was once taken / Or leave my seed in this cold world, my heart’s aching.” There are also some striking chord changes throughout that not only keep the song dynamic but also illustrate the complexity of emotions within.
“Buckingham Palace” Feat. Benny The Butcher, 38 Spesh & KXNG Crooked – The Lost Tapes With Big Ghost Ltd (2018)
At face value, there’s not much new to say about “Buckingham Palace”: a loud and bombastic horn-led boom-bap beat, equally boisterous bars like, “We kamikazes, microphone aeronautics / We bounce off promoters like West Coast hydraulic,” and fiery verses from the guests. But not only is this a well-balanced and properly electrified throwback, but it also shows off a lot of dynamic blow-trading between all these MCs. Spesh and Benny, in particular, trade bars off quickly, melding their individual verses into one. All in all, this will probably hit especially hard for the old heads out there, and is among the best examples of P Tone retreading old territory.
When they hit, there’s nothing like a Wu-Tang Clan reunion, and this is probably the biggest highlight on the collaborative album between Ghostface Killah and CZARFACE (Inspectah Deck, 7L and Esoteric), although ironically enough, Inspectah isn’t on this one. Instead, Ghost and Esoteric trade between two instrumental tones over the same percussion: the former’s contains menacing horns for his villainous energy (“I got a question for the mirror, ‘The Ballys or the Wallos?’ / ‘The Desert E, or should I do the pound with the hollows?’“), whereas the latter spits more lackadaisically over cold synths and ghostly pianos and pads. The switches between the two are always worthy of a stank face, and it’s more evidence of the now-54-year-old working perfectly with whatever teammate is by his side in the booth.
The closing track on the somewhat self-titled 2019 album from Ghostface Killah is an unconventional reggae flip that nonetheless contains one of the best beats on the project, and a refreshingly laidback atmosphere for him to attack. He’s still able to come through with aggressive deliveries coating more luxurious and nature-tuned lines like, “Sharpened machetes that slice through the trees for berries / Busting coconuts, Selassie legendary” or still bragging threateningly with lines like “Machine gun mask on, looking like a bunch of goalies.” But most impressively, neither contrasting approach dilutes the other. The Staten Island native has missed some fusions before, but this is just as sunny as it is sonning any rapper attempting to match his energy.
Finally, we have a bit of a cop out. But as one of two Wu-Tang MCs on here for the group’s first official single in six years in the year of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, we wanted to shout out Ghostface Killah’s emotive, powerful, and deeply verse on “Claudine.” Per legendary Wu producer Mathematics, who’s behind the board here, this song is a tribute to his mother and to “all mothers, wives, and young women,” and is a soulful tale of love, perseverance, pain, and togetherness. Method Man goes over a complicated relationship with a partner, whereas Ghost honors his deceased mother. “Her face was cold, she felt my tears in the casket / And every drop that fell on her cheek, I cried acid.” It summarizes much of what makes his work transcendent in a powerful way, and we can’t wait to hear what else he crafts.
The rollout for Black & Whites continues 24 hours later, as Hit-Boy and the crew drop the lead single “Foreclosure.” That crew consists of the Fontana, CA native, his father Big Hit, as well as the boom-bap master, The Alchemist. They are dropping the project we just mentioned very soon, as it was announced via an Office Space-inspired album trailer. The trio did a remarkable job recreating the printer smashing scene from the 1999 comedy classic. All three artists were smashing keyboards, while still paying homage to the OG, including the printer, too. In the 1:30 clip, Hit-Boy and the gang previewed music, but it turned out to not be “Foreclosure.”
Fans are still awaiting the release date for Black & Whites so that is partially why this track is here. It appears that Hit-Boy, Big Hit, and The Alchemist are bringing a grim and murderous tone to this project. “Foreclosure” starts out with some mean and punchy drums from Hit-Boy. Then, the beat switches slightly, as Uncle Al brings haunting piano keys into the instrumental.

While the terrific beat rolls on, Big Hit is providing a deliberate flow with aggressive lyrics. His raspy voice pairs perfectly with the atmosphere and it sounds like we are going to have an incredibly consistent project on our hands. Hit-Boy and The Alchemist are two of the most decorated and respected producers hip-hop has ever had. The longtime beatmakers have honed their craft and created instantly recognizable instrumentals for dozens of legends and rising stars. Luckily, we have been able to hear the two minds collaborate on one project. It happened with a mini three-track EP back in February of this year called THEODORE & ANDRE, which included a feature from Johnathan Hulett. But this offering got us wanting more and it seems we are going to get our wish soon. Hit-Boy recently uploaded an album trailer on his social media platforms just moments ago and it sounds like it will be one hell of a project.
Also, joining them on this endeavor is Hit-Boy’s father Big Hit. Him and his pops have been hard at work together ever since his caretaker served nine years of a 12 year-sentence. Big Hit was found guilty and convicted of a hit-and-run in Los Angeles, which led to some severe injuries in 2014. The father-son duo has gone on to release Paisley Dreams with The Game, as well as Big Hit’s debut album The Truth Is In My Eyes. Additionally, they had dropped SURF OR DROWN, Vol. 2 back in June of 2023.
Now, their fourth effort, which is called Black & Whites is coming soon, but we are still awaiting a release date. For now, we have this funny trailer, which makes a direct reference to the 1999 classic comedy film, Office Space. The trio recreates the iconic printer smashing scene where the office employees obliterate the machine. Instead, they kick, punch and wield a bat on keyboards while a song from the album plays. It sounds like the tone of the project will be dark, at least based on the teaser and we cannot wait.

Former Griselda signee and Newark, New Jersey native Mach-Hommy is one of the many stars in the underground scene. His terrific pen and ear for solid production have molded him into one of the most respected and consistent artists. The Haitian-bred MC has had a prolific career since he got his start just about five years ago, and pretty soon he will be adding another new record to his discography. Mach-Hommy is titling the project #Richaxxhaitian, but that is about all we know at this moment in time. According to Genius, rumblings around this offering started in April of last year.
One of the independent artist’s closest pals, Jens “The Guru” Elmera, posted a picture with the rapper, captioning it with this message. “#RICHAXXHAITIAN komin’ soon (My Network Different ).” Then, just two months later a private listening party for the album was held on June 15 in New York. Mach-Hommy apparently played the full album. Subsequently, a producer named Fortes shared the album’s cover art and tracklist, but it has since been deleted. Because of this, there is some speculation that the album will not drop.

But with Mach dropping “#Richaxxhaitian” on Apple Music only as of now today, there is hope that it could still be on the way. This record sees the Pray For Haiticreator tap an unexpected pair of names for this single. KAYTRANADA and California native 03 Greedo are two artists that share almost nothing in common with the super lyrical wizard. But if you are a big fan of Mach, you know that he and KAY collaborated in the past on a track called “$payforhaiti.” This track goes over extremely well, as 03 brings a sticky chorus over KAYTRANADA’s signature bouncy sound. Mach is also bringing it, especially on the flow side of things. Hopefully, we get this album and this song on more streaming platforms.

The never-ending cycle of Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ignfalsely prophesizing a release date for an album continued this past Friday. After Ye himself said that VULTURES 2 was dropping on May 3 in a viral interview with Justin LaBoy, fans were obviously ticked off. Part of the reason is because the original release schedule had the second installment releasing on March 8, and the third on April 5. Additionally, people have been left in the dark about what platform this project will be on. However, Ty Dolla $ign recently made it known that VULTURES 2 will see a release through a YZY app.
A tweet from NFR Podcast included a short clip from a Kick livestream with YouTube star Vitaly Zdorovetskiy, or VitalyzdTv. During their chat, a fan sent in a question asking, “Ty, is VULTURES 2 dropping on an app or on streaming services?” The rapper and singer simply replied, “On a app.” That platform is potentially being called the YZY app, with proof from an attached tweet from NFR. It is a screenshot of an Instagram account with the handle, yzyapp. It looks to be legit, as the only two accounts it follows are Ty and Kanye’s. Additionally, it has a link to yeezy.com and over 15,900 followers.
Ty also revealed a good amount of additional information around VULTURES in general during his appearance. According to Netflix Junkie via MSN, the California native gave the fans some lip service about what day the album could drop. “ASAP. Alternative Florida rapper $NOT has built out quite the career for himself ever since bursting onto the scene in 2018. He has gone on to work with some of the industries elite names such as A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, Juicy J, Trippie Redd, Kevin Abstract and more. What all of those artists have in common is that they all appeared on $NOT’s last record Ethereal, which saw a release in 2022. Now, over two years later and $NOT is getting ready to drop a new album soon and he is giving a sneak peek as to what the direction will be on “BULLY.”
The 300 Entertainment signee has been active dropping singles in between that time we have not gotten a record. After a handful of EPs, loads of features across multiple genres, and several loose singles, Compton, California multi-talent Channel Tres is prepping for his debut album. According to multiple reports, including Pitchfork, the soon-to-be 33-year-old is titling the project Head Rush. The release date is June 14 and will be released through RCA records. To get the ball rolling on it, Channel Tres has decided to drop the project’s lead single “Berghain,” with fellow Cali artist Barney Bones. Over the course of his complex career, Channel has never really fit into one genre. His chameleon-like tendencies shine through on this nightclub ready track once again.
The comparison is apt here because this song has a personal tie to the Berlin, Germany club of the same name. It is personal due to the fact that Channel visited this location, and it inspired him to create this trippy and hypnotic cut. “It’s about the time I played Berghain and how the culture in that environment made me feel, I didn’t feel weird anymore. Everyone’s the same, the goal for everyone in that place is to enjoy themselves and be free, and music played a pivotal role in that, said Tres.

DaBaby, in most people’s eyes, has come out with some pretty lackluster projects for the last couple of years. It seems that the consensus, for the most part, is that KIRK was perhaps the most recent offering that had the most memorable cuts. But the Cleveland-born rapper has had a fire lit under him over the last few weeks especially with some viral freestyles over the instrumentals for “Like That” and “Get It Sexyy.” He has always flashed tremendous technical abilities on these off-the-dome sessions, but fans are waiting for an album to replicate what his earlier LPs had.
