Open Mike Eagle’s Previous Industries Leaves Off Loose & Abstract Single “Zayre”

Just a few months ago, a new three-headed monster was born. That would the combination of underground hip-hop greats Open Mike Eagle, Video Dave, and STILL RIFT. Together they are known as Previous Industries, and their de facto leader is the first of those three names. If you know anything about these guys, you are well aware by now that doing things by the conventional hip-hop playbook is not the forte. When you go into their music, you are in for a one-of-a-kind listening experience almost every time. Even though these three gentlemen are Chicago natives, they are currently based out of the L.A. area. Pretty soon, these East coasters are going to be dropping their first album.

But before that comes, Previous Industries is back with a new promotional single called “Zayre”. This is their third drop overall, but it is their fourth track. Their inaugural release was a two-pack consisting of “Showbiz” and “Braids”. After that followed “Pliers”, which hit platforms on April 23.

One thing that is cool about each song title so far, is that each one is a reference to a former business. You can credit Stereogum for discovering that neat fun fact. What is even cooler is that Previous Industries is playing into this quite a bit, even including hidden meaning in their lyrics. “When you have time, watch the commercials for Zayre and know that it was a real place where people bought action figures and pants. The producer Child Actor is a genius. He showed us his formula once, and we got really scared… There’s secret lyrics to the hook that [Open Mike Eagle will] never tell you. Dave might tell you for the right price, but he never will”. Fans can try and discover more hidden gems when Service Merchandise drops on June 28.

Lucky Daye Is Letting His Walls All The Way Down On “Soft”

Lucky Daye, former American Idol contestant and RCA Records signee, is back with a brand-new single “Soft”. This is the New Orleans, Louisiana native’s third offering from his forthcoming third studio record, Algorithm. It will be his first project since 2022’s Candydrip, a record that featured the likes of Lil Durk, Smino, and Chiiild. Of course, the solo tracks such as “Over” and “Deserve” were standouts. So far, Lucky Daye has impressed fans with “HERicane” and “That’s You”, and “Soft” seems to be on the path of being another hit.

On this song, Lucky is singing about a woman that he is so infatuated with. The attraction is so strong in fact that he is becoming his most vulnerable self. Lucky Daye spoke with RCA about what “Soft” means to him. “‘Soft’ is about how love can come over a person and make them feel vulnerable, and whilst it’s unexpected, it’s also okay to embrace it”.

He continues, “To be comfortable doing the things society labels “soft” like cuddling, PDA, hugging and kissing – shamelessly. It’s about a lover putting a spell on you but that spell is in fact love itself”. The opening lines (below) and lyrics later on in the track accurately depict said feelings over a rock/R&B instrumental that just makes sense sonically. If you cannot enjoy the guitar solo thrown in on the back half, then we do not know what to tell you. Lucky Daye’s Algorithm is due out on June 28.

LUCKI Leaves Off Second 2-Pack, “2 Faced, Pt. 2”, Ahead Of Rumored Album

LUCKI has made a living off his signature mumbly and druggy flows over slow-mo trap rap beats. Today, the Chicago, Illinois-bred artist is delivering more of the same on his newest set of tracks. Just a few months ago, he put out a two-pack called 2 Faced back in January for his rumored album GEMIN! According to Genius, the project is supposed to be out on June 14, and it would follow up his 2023 tape s*x m*ney dr*gs. Now, fast forward to today and LUCKI has more to offer in the form of 2 Faced, Pt. 2.

This time around LUCKI is bossing up on both cuts, which are “Heavy On My Heart”, and “Courtesy Of”. On the first track, the veteran rapper is proving an ex wrong by locking and making as much bread as possible. “Really a rapper, but I’m with the wolves, ’cause I know they’ve got dreams too / We had fell out, the whole world seen it, they had told me to leave you / Went back home when I got rich, and they said I needed you“.

Then, on “Courtesy Of”, LUCKI is straight up flexing on the haters and possibly his contemporaries. “N****s first round bust down, ain’t even wanna play / I got money in a vault, I got money just to play / We’ll play you like you soft if you ain’t slimier than me“. On 2 Faced, LUCKI divulged on being a baller on “PAIDNFULL”, whereas “COLORFUL DRUGS” was more of a trippy vibe than anything else. Overall, these tracks are fine, but nothing too new.

Kehlani Will Do Anything To Be “Next 2 U” On Latest “CRASH” Single

Kehlani is one of R&B’s most consistent artists. You can always count on her to deliver some smooth and stunning falsetto vocals on a single, feature, or album. Pretty soon, the Oakland songstress will be coming through on the latter with a new project called CRASH. Kehlani announced it about two weeks ago and she is back to promote it for the second time with “Next 2 U”.

This single follows up on the already popular “After Hours”, which dropped back on April 4. The lead single sampled the 2004 hit “Move Ya Body” by Nina Sky and Jabba, and its addicting vocal melodies and instrumental have really sold the song for a lot of people. Now, Kehlani is looking to go two for two with “Next 2 U”. This track has a much different sound, opting for more booming bass and electronic elements.

“After Hours” was more pop centric and more danceable, but here, Kehlani is looking to focus more on providing a show-stopping performance. In our opinion, the 29-year-old succeeds once again, as she sings passionately about protecting the one she loves. “To get next to you / They gon’, they gon’ have to call the law / I don’t care what they offer, I’m protecting you“. Logic Makes Some Familiar Callbacks On “Deja Vu”

Logic has been working on Ultra 85 “for years and years and years”. That was according to an interview with The Greatest Creators With Guy Raz in early 2024. Fans certainly know that, as a lot of people have been on the edge of their seats waiting a long time for this to come to fruition. That hopelessness should be coming to end at some point this year, as Logic did share that info with us in late January.

A few days after that announcement, the Maryland multi-hyphenate would go on to drop the dance-inspired “Fear”. Then, the more straightforward banger, “44ever”, would follow in April, which brings us to Deja Vu”. As soon as you spin this single, your ears may catch on to the familiar flows, lyrics, and instrumental. This certainly makes sense, especially due to the name of the record.

If you thought you were hearing elements of “Fade Away”, then you would be correct! The Incredible True Story cut is a fan favorite for most, and listeners are already calling this “Fade Away 2”. The bars highlighted below are maybe the most impactful, as Logic gives us an update of the lyrics from the 2015 song. Originally, they went something like this: “Yeah, everybody gonna die, gonna go, one day / Maybe it would happen on a Monday“. This time around, he knows what to do, which is to live his life without anyone’s input. It is a great full circle moment, and ties in perfectly to the message of this song, as well as “Fear”.

“2024 is PERSONAL not business ”. Those were the words of Compton, California multi-hyphenate Roddy Ricch via his Instagram just over 24 hours ago. After a strong run in the latter half of the 2010’s, especially with Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, it seemed that he was going to be one of the new faces of pop/trap rap. Unfortunately, the quality took a dip on the subsequent releases LIVE LIFE FAST and Feed Tha Streets III. Based on his brand-new single Survivor’s Remorse, it is clear that Roddy Ricch has heard the narrative that he has fallen off.

“Imagine if I had a dollar for every time you say I fell off, I’d be a billionaire“, he raps on the first bar of his second verse. In addition to addressing the doubters, he gives some evidence as to why he has been laying back. “Roddy really anti, they took it pеrsonal, what the f*** was I supposed to do? / I been goin’ through child support / A good daddy, I vouch for it“. It was recently reported that Roddy’s ex-partner, Alexandra Kiser, did not feel that the rapper was there enough for their now three-year-old son.

“He has been arrested on a gun charge, domestic violence and regularly indulges in promethazine use, all of which are concerns for myself and our son”. Trae Tha Truth & A$AP Ferg Team Up For Hazy & Braggadocious Single “Rock Out”

Trae Tha Truth does not the credit he deserves for being a standout voice in the Southern hip-hop scene. With so many legends, especially from Houston (where he is from), his name does not get brought enough. He is not a hit song writer, but he is able to create these luxuriously smoky bangers with ease. That trademark style has taken him a long way, as he is now over 20 years deep into his career.

Recently, Trae Tha Truth dropped off a new single, “Rock Out”, which provides a hazy environment right from the jump. Joining him on this spacey cut is A$AP Ferg, or FERG. Surprisingly, this is the first time that we are hearing these veterans on the same record. Their approach to creating tracks is different. However, it is not to the point that sticking them on the same beat does not make sense at all.

In fact, FERG brings an incredibly wavy performance on “Rock Out” which fits the vibe to a tee. His “Rooocckkk outtt” background vocals add so much extra character to the instrumental as well. Fans can expect it to drop sometime this summer.

Hit-Boy, Big Hit, & The Alchemist Tease “Black & Whites” One Final Time With “Drug Tzar”

In 2024, Hit-Boy, Big Hit, and The Alchemist, are creating one of the most rock-solid one-off rap trios. While they do not have a group name, what they have been up to as a unit has been pretty impressive. The California trifecta has been dropping single after single over the month of May. All of them have been released to build anticipation for their forthcoming record Black & Whites.

As we have stated multiple times now at this point, the album was first teased on May 6. Big Hit, Hit-Boy, and The Alchemist did so by dropping a short trailer on social media. It recreated the obliteration of printers from the film Office Space. They then proceeded to pump out three tracks, with the most recent one, “Gank Move,” featuring Hit-Boy’s younger sister HitgirlLENA.

However, it is not the latest offering now, as that title belongs to the Big Hit-dominated “Drug Tzar” (a Russian emperor). On this cut, Hit-Boy’s meticulously picks apart a dirty boom-bap beat from Uncle Al. He raps about being the boss and essentially being a drug-dealing kingpin. The tracklist is sadly a third of the way released already, as it will be just 12 songs. However, at least there has not been a miss yet. That is a great indication that May 30 will not be a disappointing day for anyone who decides to check the tape out.

Dro Kenji Gets Brutally Toxic On “HEARTLESS”

With the unfortunate losses of artists like JUICE WRLD, XXXTENTACION, and Lil Peep, who are some of the names that are going to keep the emo rap scene alive? One multi-hyphenate that has been a lot of publications radar’s, including ours, is Dro Kenji. The Summerville, South Carolina act has been in the game for a few years now, but he really picked up steam in the last year or two. Tracks like “KILL CUPID,” “FINDERS KEEPERS,” and “STEP BACK,” have really put him on the permanently as someone that is more than capable of accepting the challenge to supersede the legends before him.

Kenji is one of the more consistent talents when it comes to dropping new material out of this new crop of emo rappers/singers. Since 2020, he has gotten out eight tapes, and fairly soon a ninth will be out this year, according to Our Generation Music. There is not really much information on when it will be here exactly, but fans can expect it in the latter half of 2024. For now, though, Dro Kenji is here with presumably its lead single “HEARTLESS.”

On “HEARTLESS” you might find that your ears will do a double take. It does not happen all the time, but Kenji’s voice is almost exactly the same as Juice’s. For us, it does take away from the authenticity of the track, but it is a toxically written treat. “She not the sharpest in the tool box / I need some space for me to cool off (Te-Text) / Text me, it’s annoyin’ when you call me.” When this album does drop, it will follow-up on his August 2023 effort WISH YOU WERE HERE.

The Weeknd Shares Ominous Message Possibly Alluding To His Final Album

The Weeknd’s final album under that moniker, and the final installment in his After Hours and Dawn FM trilogy, is one of the most anticipated releases of… 2023? 2024? 2025? We’ve known about it for a pretty long time, and in between heavy touring and his HBO show The Idol, he’s had a lot of boxes to check off before entering a new era. However, Abel Tesfaye may be close to this conclusion, as he recently shared a pretty cryptic message on his Instagram Story. It’s a repost of what seems like a tweet about a performance of “Save Your Tears” as cars zoom past him, and is followed up with an ominous premonition: “the end is near.”

“There was a lot of trust with those cars,” the post about The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” performance read. “He didn’t seem nervous at all, which really weirded us out, because these cars were just barreling by him and he was calm, kept his composure, walked slow and just didn’t look back. It was kind of amazing.” Whether or not he’ll have similar stunts or another approach entirely for his next LP, we’re sure it’ll be something special.

Of course, The Weeknd’s magnitude and artistry in the industry means that he connected with some of the best in the game for collaborations. Metro Boomin is one particularly close partner who recently confirmed that more work from them will appear on this upcoming album. Also, it’s entirely possible that the Toronto superstar referred to something else with this social media post that doesn’t have anything to do with the next project. But that seems unlikely, and there are few other places where XO fans’ minds will go when they hear that phrase.

Meanwhile, we haven’t heard much about Cash XO’s bodyguard’s shooting since it happened back in April. Hopefully things slowed down significantly and are in a much more safe, protected, and calm space now. Whether this hampered The Weeknd’s process is a question we may never get the answer too, but whatever he’s bringing us next, it’s arriving soon. Given his stellar career and influence up until this point, most of us expect fireworks at the end of it all… at least, for this stage name.
