Britney Spears shared a tribute to Janet Jackson on Instagram, Sunday, amid her ongoing feud with Justin Timberlake. She noted that the iconic singer is someone she will “look up to” for the rest of her life. Fans in the comments section were quick to note that Timberlake infamously exposed Jackson’s breasts during their performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2004.
“Thank you to this beautiful lady for keeping my dreams and heart alive,” Spears wrote in the since-deleted post. “She’s always been the deepest and brightest woman at the same time. She went through so much but I feel she is someone I will look up to for the rest of my life.” She added: “Thank you for your music and your divine way of untangling intelligence to a far more clear view than anyone could ever imagine.”

Spears’ feud with Timberlake resurfaced after the release of her memoir, The Woman in Me, which contained several stories about her ex. She claimed the NSYNC singer cheated on her and pressured her into getting an abortion. “I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book. If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about, I am deeply sorry,” Spears wrote, adding that she enjoyed Timberlaker’s new single, “Selfish.” While performing at his 43rd birthday party in New York City, Timberlake seemingly responded to the comments by remarking: “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely f–king nobody.”

For obvious reasons, her story got social media users talking. It managed to invoke plenty of secondhand embarrassment, with countless commenters calling it disrespectful and strange. During a recent interview with PEOPLE, however, Ginuwine addressed Spears’ story, claiming that he personally doesn’t remember it. “Yeah, yeah, I definitely heard about it. People were calling about that. But I can tell you I don’t remember that happening. I truly don’t remember that happening.” According to him, if it had actually happened, he would have remembered it. “If Justin would’ve did something like that, I probably would’ve looked at him like, ‘Why are you acting like that?’” he says. “If he did that, that would be something that I would remember. That would’ve definitely stuck out. So nah, I don’t remember that happening.”
While it’s possible that Spears simply remembers something that Ginuwine doesn’t, it seems as though her recollection might’ve been incorrect. The pair were teenagers when their relationship started, and were arguably the most iconic teenage couple at the time. From their red carpet debut in 2000, the media, as well as the fans around the world, couldn’t get enough. In 2000 and 2001, they were often seen together and shared some iconic fashion moments. In a 2001 interview with Andi Peters for Rich & Famous, Spears shared that Timberlake asked her out sometime in 1999, while they were on tour. Admittedly, what the public could see about their relationship was as cute as cute could get. Surprisingly, however, their relationship came to an unexpected end in March 2002.
Following their break up, Spears and Timberlake both went through varying degrees of heartbreak. In November 2002, Timberlake released the video for his acclaimed song “Cry Me a River,” which he admitted was inspired by Spears. With Britney Spears’ new memoir The Woman In Me coming out later this week there’s all kinds of new information emerging about her career and past. The biggest revelations have involved Justin Timberlake. The singer reportedly got Britney pregnant while they were dating which resulted in what she described as an “excruciating” abortion. In fact, one of the reflections in The Woman In Me, albeit a brief one, apparently addresses why the Mississippi native likes to take lewd photos and post them online. This is according to alleged excerpts obtained by The New York Times, which means that this is a pretty good indication that this will make the final cut. “I know that a lot of people don’t understand why I love taking pictures of myself naked or in new dresses,” Britney Spears shared. “But I think if they’d been photographed by other people thousands of times, prodded and posed for other people’s approval, they’d understand that I get a lot of joy from posing the way I feel sexy and taking my own picture.”

Britney Spears has deactivated her Instagram account amid a bevy of headlines stemming from excerpts of her forthcoming memoir. In her final video before shutting down the account, Spears spoke on how she was being affected by the reaction to what has already been released. “I don’t like the headlines I am reading, That’s exactly why I quit the business 4 years ago!!! Most of the book is from 20 years ago. I have moved on and it’s a beautiful clean slate from here!!! I am here to establish it that way for the rest of my entire life !!! Either way, that is the last of it and sh-t happens!!!”
A few hours before Spears deactivated, TMZ published an interview with her former writing partner, Annet Artani. Artani contested Spears’ account of a fling she had with one of her dancers, Wade Robson. Spears said she shared a “one-time kiss” with Robson. However, Artani attested that the affair was much more substantial, including a 14-page breakup letter that Spears reportedly wrote but ultimately did not send to Robson.

Furthermore, Page Six has revealed that Justin Timberlake reportedly broke up with Spears via a two-word text message. “It’s over!!!” the message reportedly read, which Spears received while shooting the music video for “Overprotected: The Darkchild Remix”. The story was relayed to the outlet via the video’s director, Chris Applebaum. He reportedly found Spears in tears on the floor of her trailer after she went missing from the set for “20 to 40 minutes”.
Timberlake had allegedly been trying to contact Spears throughout the day to discuss the aforementioned infidelity with Robson. After failing to get a hold of her, Timberlake chose to break it off. Applebaum recalled Spears being hesitant to finish the shoot. However, he was finally able to convince her by telling her to use it to get back at Timberlake. “If you don’t have it in you, I totally understand. But if you want to go out there and finish this last set-up in the rain, you can show him that he just made the biggest f-cking mistake of his life,” Applebaum told Page Six of that conversation.
