Cardi B To Headline Hot 97 Sumer Jam 2023

Funk Flex has been teasing the Summer Jam line-up for the past few weeks. The iconic DJ was promoted to the creative director of Hot 97 in December. In the past few months, he’s shown that he’s clearly taking the gig seriously. He’s taken to socials where he’s teased some of the artists who might land on the line-up. Many of which hail from the East Coast. However, Hot 97 finally revealed the star-studded line-up this morning which emphasizes the talent in New York City, such as Cardi B and Ice Spice.

With Summer Jam set for June 4th at the UBS Arena, Hot 97 finally unveiled the line-up for this year’s festivities. Cardi B is set to headline the evening, which seems to be a strong indication that her sophomore album is on the way. However, the line-up also highlights the women who are dominating the culture right now. Ice Spice, Coi Leray, GloRilla, and Lola Brooke will also be holding down the stage. Meanwhile, Fivio Foreign, who headlined last year’s festival, Lil Tjay, and French Montana have been tapped to perform at this year’s show, as well.

Hot 97’s Hip Hop 50 Celebration At Summer Jam

The main line-up includes artists who’ve emerged in the past decade. Still, Hot 97 does have plans to celebrate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. The LOX will come through for the “Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop” segment. Hopefully, we’ll see them bring out a few collaborators on stage, as well. Or, at least, have Jadakiss perform his “Who Shot Ya” freestyle live. Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch celebrated the milestone at the Grammys for their Hip Hop 50 performance.

The line-up emphasizes New York’s talent in the current state of hip-hop but that’s not necessarily a coincidence. After years of hosting Summer Jam in New Jersey, this year’s event will mark the first time in 20 years Hot 97 is bringing the concert back to New York. Hopefully, hosting Summer Jam at the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY will set the tone for the future of the festival. Check out the full Summer Jam lineup above. We’ll keep you posted on anymore updates surrounding the festival

Funk Flex Apologizes To Wu-Tang Clan For Past Hot 97 Beef

Funk Flex has posted an apology to RZA and the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan for their beef over the years. The Hot 97 DJ shared the message on Instagram, Saturday. He explained that he regrets not putting their dispute, which dates back over twenty years, to bed.

“I WANNA TAKE THIS TIME TO APOLOGIZE TO THE @RZA AND THE ENTIRE @WUTANGCLAN !!! ALMOST 25YRS AGO THE GROUP, ME AND HOT97 HAD A DISAGREEMENT THAT TO ME NEVER GOT PUT TO BED. AND I APOLOGIZE!” Flex wrote i the caption of a photo of himself with RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.

“LOOKING BACK AT THIS 20 SUMTHIN YEARS LATER.. WE GONNA MAKE UP FOR THE TIME WE MISSED…” he further wrote. “THE WORLDS GREATEST RAP GROUP AND THE WORLDS GREATEST RADIO STATIONS ARE GOING TO COME TOGETHER BRING U SOMETHING AMAZING!”

Raekwon commented on the post: “Nothing but love Blackman! And that’s Reciprical!!!!!.” RZA also commented three Wu-hands emojis.

Wu-Tang Clan detailed their beef with Hot 97 during the group’s 2019 docuseries Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men. Inspectah Deck claimed Hot 97 threatened to pull their music if the group didn’t perform at Summer Jam in 1997. On stage at the event, Ghostface Killah lead the crowd in a “Fuck Hot 97!” chant.

“They didn’t play our records for like the next 10 years,” Deck explained, while adding that they got other radio stations to join in the boycott as well. “Us not being involved while they playing the Biggie shit, they playing Nas shit, everybody that was rocking with us at the time. That affected our sales, that affected our touring, that affected everything. That affected our presence.”

Wu-Tang Clan previously mended their relationship with Hot 97 by playing Summer Jam in 2013. The group aren’t the only artists Funk Flex has blacklisted over the years. He also recently stopped playing music by 6ix9ine, but has since gone back on that decision. Check out Funk Flex’s apology to Wu-Tang Clan on Instagram below.

Roddy Ricch Led A ‘F*ck The NYPD’ Chant At Hot 97 Summer Jam After Being Arrested On Gun Charges

The NYPD has never been the most popular organization with rappers and their fans but over the weekend, the New York Police Department incensed one rapper in particular ahead of his set at Hot 97 Summer Jam. Roddy Ricch, who released his second album Live Life Fast to close out 2021, was scheduled to perform at both Governors Ball on Saturday and Summer Jam on Sunday but was forced to miss out on the former when he was arrested over a loaded firearm that was found in his vehicle at a security checkpoint.

According to New York Daily News, Roddy’s charges were quickly dismissed along with those of one of the other two men who were also arrested with him. The third, Michael Figueroa of Brooklyn, New York, was arraigned on Sunday — according to the report, it appears his gun caused all the trouble.

Although Roddy avoided serious charges, he clearly didn’t enjoy his brush with the law or being forced to miss a performance. When he took the stage at Summer Jam, he made sure to let the crowd know how he felt, leading a “f*ck the NYPD” chant during his set. You can check out the video below.

Hot 97 Summer Jam’s 2022 Lineup Is Led By Fivio Foreign, Lil Durk, And Lil Baby

Whatever city on the hip-hop map you call your own, there’s no escaping the impact of Hot 97’s Summer Jam in New York. It’s still one of the biggest single-day festivals in the culture, nearly always offering a who’s-who of the biggest stars in hip-hop. This year’s lineup is no different, highlighting the leading rap artists of 2022, as well as some of the genre’s fastest-rising up-and-comers.

The festival’s top line gets to include one of New York’s hometown favorites in the form of Fivio Foreign, with Chicago’s Lil Durk and Atlanta’s Lil Baby right behind. Young Thug and Gunna are apparently sharing a joint set, which makes sense considering how closely tied the duo’s output has been over the past two years between Punk, DS4EVER, and Slime Language 2 (we’re definitely getting both “Surf” and “Ski“).

Elsewhere on the lineup is a cross-section of styles and locales, from Miami’s City Girls to Virginia’s Pusha T to Compton’s Roddy Ricch. Even Nigerian favorite Burna Boy is there. Meanwhile, New York will remain well-represented thanks to Benny The Butcher (I know, I know, he’s from Buffalo, but still), DreamDoll, 22Gz, Lady London, Dougie B (hopefully, he makes bail by showtime), and The Girll Codee (worth giving a Google).

Summer Jam takes over Metlife Stadium on June 12. As always, get more information at the official website.

Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Pusha T, & Young Thug to Perform at Hot 97 Summer Jam

Summer Jam is heating up.

Hot 97 has announced the star-studded lineup for the iconic hip-hop festival, which will return to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on June 12, with performances from Lil Durk, Pusha T, City Girls, and more.

Before he heads on tour with Chris Brown, Lil Baby will hit the main Stadium Stage, along with Young Thug, Gunna, and Roddy Ricch. The bill also includes Burna Boy, Shenseea, Benny the Butcher, DreamDoll, and Fivio Foreign, who will close out his hometown show.

The night will also feature a special musical tribute to Hot 97’s own DJ Kay Slay, who died after a battle with COVID-19 earlier this month.

Additionally, the Festival Stage will showcase emerging stars including Nardo Wick, NLE Choppa, Yung Bleu, Cordae, BabyFace Ray, Drewski & Friends featuring B-Lovee, JNR Choi, Dougie B., 22GZ, Lady London, and Saucy Santana.

Tickets go on sale April 30 at 10 a.m. EST, with a pre-sale for American Express card members beginning April 29 at 10 a.m. EST.

Newly Unearthed Footage Of Jay-Z’s Iconic 2001 Summer Jam Set Includes A Michael Jackson Cameo

Months before the release of his critically acclaimed album, The Blueprint in 2001, Jay-Z performed a memorable set at the annual Hot 97 Summer Jam. For over two decades, Jay-Z‘s hour-long set has remained one of the hip-hop festival’s most iconic moments, footage has proven difficult to find.

Until yesterday, when Jay’s set resurfaced via a YouTube account called HipHopVCR.

The set consists of Jay performing several of his hits and debuting new tracks. He performed “Takeover,” a response to Nas’ scathing diss track “Ether.” “Takeover” was produced by Kanye West, who, at the time, was relatively unknown. “Takeover” was targeted at both Nas and Mobb Deep, particularly one-half of Mobb Deep, late rapper Prodigy. During the performance, Jay broadcast a photo of a young Prodigy in dance classes on the jumbotron.

Later on in the set, Jay brought out Michael Jackson. Though the two didn’t perform together, Jackson can be seen blowing kisses and tossing peace signs to a roaring crowd.

Jay would later collaborate with MJ on Blueprint cut “Girls, Girls, Girls,” on which, Jay claims Jackson sang background vocals, despite not appearing in the song’s credits. In 2010, a song called “(I Can’t Make It) Another Day appeared on Jackson’s posthumous album, Michael. The track was originally written as a collaboration between Jackson and Lenny Kravitz for Jackson’s 2001 album Invincible, but did not make the final tracklist. It was later rewritten and recorded as “Storm” and included on Kravitz’s 2004 album Baptism, as a collaboration between Jay and Kravitz.

Though footage of the Summer Jam set has remained scarce over the years, the performance has been held to high regard in the realm of hip-hop. Jay would reference the performance in a remix of Jeezy’s 2008 hit, “Put On,” rapping, “I put Mike Jack on stage at Summer Jam, Billie Jean / I put Prodigy in his place on that Summer Jam screen.”
