Leon Bridges Pours His Heart & Soul Into Self-Titled “Leon” LP

If you have a fondness for 60s era soul, then you may want to check out what Leon Bridges in bringing on his latest effort, Leon. The Columbia records signee from Fort Worth, Texas is giving audiences a heavy dosage of that, as well as some hints of country, gospel, and R&B. Across the 13-song project, you are getting a lot of mellow and soft instrumentation. Summer may be over, but this album’s soundscape has us daydreaming about those perfect temperature evenings while you take a ride in a 60s convertible around the coast. Right from the opening track, “When a Man Cries”, you can tell just how much love and emotion went into creating Leon.

Part of the reason for that is because Leon Bridges says this album has a lot of personal weight for him. In statement, he explains, “In many ways, Leon has been in the works since my childhood. This record is about simpler days. It’s about time spent in my beloved Fort Worth and the experiences that made me the man I am today. It’s soulful music in the truest sense; it’s imbued with my soul.” Moreover, he says that the style you are hearing on the record is something that he felt needed to be expanded upon and seen further. Leon had been working on this self-titled endeavor since his last record, 2021’s Gold-Diggers Sound. “They didn’t fit what I was trying to do with that album, and I tried moving on. But I couldn’t shake them because they’re part of me. And, if I’m honest, also because I think this is some of my most excellent work yet.” We certainly agree and it’s why you need to spin this immediately.

Today in Hip-Hop History: Run-D.M.C. Dropped Their Self Titled Debut Album 41 Years Ago

On this date in 1984, the Kings from Queens released their first self-titled album on Def Jam Recordings under Rush Management.

This monumental album put Daryl McDaniels (DMC), Joseph Simmons (DJ Run), and Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay) on the map, and launched one of the most successful careers Hip-Hop has ever seen.

With songs like “Sucker MCs,” “It’s Like That,” “Hard Times” and “Rock Box,” the record was an accurate reflection of the lives of three ambitious kids from Hollis, Queens in New York City in a time before the crack epidemic.

Simmons and McDaniels used to hang around Two-Fifths Park in Hollis in late 1980, hoping to rap for the local DJs who performed and competed there. The most popular one just happened to be Mizell, then known as “Jazzy Jase” because of his flashy wardrobe and b-boy attitude. Eventually, Simmons and McDaniels rapped in front of Mizell at the park, and the rest is history.

As a group, they soon strapped on a pair of Adidas, threw on a rope chain and topped it off with a Kangol hat. Little did they know, they were crafting a signature style, one that has stood the test of time and is widely recognized around the world.

Run-D.M.C. went on to release six more albums, including 1985’s King of Rock and 1986’s Raising Hell. Tragically, Mizell was gunned down on October 30, 2002, at his recording studio in Queens. Countless fans left Adidas sneakers, albums and flowers for the legendary DJ outside of the studio, where the murder occurred. The homicide has yet to be solved.

Run-D.M.C. was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, making them one of only two Hip Hop acts given that honor at the time.

Today In Hip Hop History: Intelligent Hoodlum Dropped His Self Titled Debut Album 34 Years Ago

On this day in 1990, original Juice Crew member and Queensbridge Projects native Percy Chapman aka the Intelligent Hoodlum, released his debut album, also entitled Intelligent Hoodlum, on the A&M Records label.

Produced primarily by the QB behind the boards legend Marley Marl and Large Professor, this album was one of the most socio-political projects of its time, which could be easily categorized among the ranks of the Poor Righteous Teachers and Brand Nubian with its Islamic/5% Nation overtones. With the reception of The Juice Crew’s “The Symphony” as one of the best Hip Hop tracks of all time, it was very easy to overlook the members of the crew that didn’t appear on the song. As the youngest member of the crew, this album was necessary for Tragedy to prove himself as artist in his own right.

Some of the most memorable track from this project include the James Brown-powered “Black And Proud”, the George H.W. Bush-inspired “Arrest The President” and the Soul II Soul-sampled “Back To Reality”. Almost three decades ago, albums were more exclusive, so a 12-track album was an unspoken maximum for the number of songs on a full length project.

Salute to the Intelligent Hoodlum(Tragedy Khadafi) Marley Marl, Large Professot and everyone at A&M Records that helped make this album a Hip Hop classic!

Today in Hip-Hop History: Whodini Dropped Their Self Titled Debut Album 41 Years Ago

tumblr 4d97f72a960f44ca76ddeac1a80b18da 7100536f 500

On this date in 1983, pioneering rap trio Whodini, who then was sans DJ Grandmaster D, released their self-titled debut album Whodini on the Jive Records imprint.

Produced primarily by Grammy-nominated British producer and composer Thomas Dolby, Whodini’s first album never really saw any commercial success, however, the album’s “Magic Wand” track did climb to #11 on the Dance Club Songs and number 45 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs while the Willesden Dodges-produced track “The Haunted House of Rock” peaked at number 27 on the Dance Club Songs and number 55 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs.

The eight-track album’s duration is less than 45 minutes, something that was virtually a no-no in all genres of music during the early 80s, however, as one of Hip Hop’s first-ever full-length albums, the duration for each song is extensively longer than the average Hip Hop song today.

Salute to Jalil, Ecstacy(RIP) and Grandmaster D for their timeless contribution to Hip Hop history!

Today in Hip-Hop History: The Fat Boys’ Self Titled Debut Album Turns 40 Years Old!

tumblr b71e74f7331960f4e2ee3115ec2d25e8 77c08ad6 1280

The Fat Boys released their self-titled debut album May 29, 1984, exactly four decades ago today (May 29). The Brooklyn trio, comprised of Prince Markie Dee, Kool Rock-Ski, and The Human Beat Box or “Buffy,” helped put beatboxing on the map, along with Doug E. Fresh.

Considered by many to be an early ’80s Hip Hop classic, the self-titled album had no guest appearances and was one of the first to feature a live beatbox on a record. The trio then made a memorable appearance in the classic Hip-Hop film, Krush Groove, in 1985.

For its 1984 album, songs like the anthemic “Human Beat Box” and the storytelling saga of “Jailhouse Rap” gave the East New York trio a leg up against their rapping peers like Run-D.M.C. and Whodini. The timeless title track was an unapologetic ode for overweight people to not feel embarrassed about their weight, giving light to other rotund artists like Heavy D and even The Notorious B.I.G.

Sadly, on December 10, 1995, Buff Love died of a heart attack in Rosedale, Queens, New York. He was 28 years of age and reportedly weighed 450 pounds. Prince Markie Dee passed away on February 18, 2021 from congestive heart failure during the height of the pandemic. Both of them will forever be missed. The only surviving member, Kool Rock Ski, s still active on social media, and regularly posts about the Fat Boys, and also produces Fat Boys merchandise which he promotes via Instagram. He is also the host of the annual Classic Hip-Hop and R&B Cookout in New York City, which began in the summer of 2021.

Bryson Tiller Successfully Experiments With Drill On “Ciao!”

Bryson Tiller has made an incredible return with his new self-titled LP. It marks his first record since 2020 with A N N I V E R S A R Y, essentially a sequel to T R A P S O U L. Both projects established his sound, which involved slow and sensual R&B with some callbacks to the 90s. With Tiller taking a large break in between albums there was a good chance that a new sonic direction was inbound. That turned out to the be case and its been paying dividends. Bryson Tiller has been winning fans over with this record, partially because of tracks like “Ciao!”

This song sees one of the many times that he experiments with a new subgenre. In this instance, Bryson is trying his hand with drill music. For us and many others, it works out for him. “Ciao!” is about Tiller moving on from toxic people, but it is mainly targeted at women. “You got a two-day trial before I take back my time and make you pay Thirty-day trial before I make my mind that it’s a waste (Yeah),” he sings on the chorus.

The beat is also a great part about this track. A few different creative minds were a part of this banger, including the album’s executive producer Charlie Heat and FNZ. With drill, the beats tend to be darker in tone. However, the instrumental is more colorful and light-hearted in a sense with trumpet sections. It comes across as a nice contrast seeing and gives off a triumphant tone as Bryson cuts ties with this woman he is over. Be sure to check it out with the link above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new song, “Ciao!” by Bryson Tiller? Is this the best track on his brand-new album Bryson Tiller, why or why not? Bryson Tiller Teams With Victoria Monet For “Persuasion” Off New Self-Titled Album

Bryson Tiller’s new eponymous album is here featuring 19 songs in total, counting the bonus effort, “Whatever She Wants.” Across that tracklist, perhaps the most noteworthy feature is Victoria Monet, who appears on “Persuasion.” Together, she and Tiller sing through a flirtatious encounter between two people. The song also made it onto this week’s edition of our R&B Season playlist.

After its release, Monet thanked Tiller for the opportunity on social media. “Thank you so much for having me on your album @brysontiller,” she wrote on Twitter. “I’ve been a big fan and I’m honored to have more music with you.” Check out the track below.

Bryson Tiller’s Self-Titled Album Is Here

Tiller previously discussed his goals with the project during an interview with Billboard, ahead of its release. “The Bryson Tiller album, I wanted to show people the many things I’m capable of,” he told the outlet. “There’s different types of vibes on here. I can take it to many different places, make so many new fans, and try new things.” He added: “My main goal with this album is for the masses to hear everything I’m capable of doing. So they give me a chance and stick around as fans. My main goal is that everybody hears it and my guarantee is that you’ll love at least one song from this album. I can guarantee that.”

Victoria Monet Thanks Bryson Tiller For The Opportunity

To that point, Tiller also told Billboard that the song, “Calypso,” most embodies the work he’s put into storytelling. The rest of the tracklist for the album comprises primarily featureless cuts but Clara La San makes an appearance on “Random Access Memory (RAM).” Be on the lookout for further updates on Bryson Tiller on HotNewHipHop.

Quotable Lyrics:

He asked if he could grab all on my— absolutely
I’m in no opposition so I’m gonna sit on that decision tonight

Bryson Tiller Debuts A New Era On Self-titled Album

Bryson Tiller’s claim to fame was his debut album T R A P S O U L back in 2015. However, this new project over here, his self-titled LP, could overtake the throne for his best work. The Louisville, Kentucky rapper and singer has been taking some time to conjure up something fresh and diverse and that is exactly what this record offers up.

This was probably the smartest move Bryson could have made. While his first album is considered a modern R&B classic, the sound would grow a little stale on True to Self and A N N I V E R S A R Y. There was still quality on both, but adding some spice to the instrumentals and cadences is a welcome sight. Leading up to Bryson Tiller’s self-titled album he put out “Whatever She Wants” and “Stay Gold,” as part of his SLUM TILLER series that dropped on Soundcloud. Those projects were a part of his Tiller Tuesdays release schedule that began earlier this year.

Both were fan-favorites and now they make it onto the album. Additionally, Bryson dropped a third track, “CALYPSO,” which has also been a success. The progressive instrumental that mixes dancehall and R&B brings a fun and loose listening experience from beginning to end. Those two adjectives can describe the journey from track one to track 19. Bryson Tiller is back in full force and with an enticing new direction in the process.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album, Bryson Tiller, by Bryson Tiller? Is this his best body of work ever, why or why not? What songs are you gravitating toward right now? Who had the better feature on the record? What is the best song on the album? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section.
