Ron DeSantis Threatens To Sue NCAA Over Florida State’s CFP Exclusion

Ron DeSantis has asked the Florida state legislature for $1 million in their new budget to sue the NCAA for excluding Florida State from the College Football Playoff. “My first-grader, my fifth-grader, and my preschooler – they are all Noles. They are big-time fans and they do the tomahawk chop and they were not happy. We are going to set aside $1 million and let the chips fall where they may,” DeSantis told the chamber. However, it’s largely a symbolic gesture. The college football season will be decided long before the budget is ratified.

The 13-0 Seminoles were excluded from the College Football Playoff, becoming the first undefeated Power 5 champion not to make the four-team playoff. 12-1 Alabama and 12-1 Texas, champions of the SEC and Big 12 respectively, made the playoff alongside undefeated Michigan and Washington. Head coach Mike Norvell said he was “disgusted” with the decision. However, the CFP committee pointed to the loss of both the Noles’ first- and second-string quarterbacks as their deciding factor.

However, he is still nearly 50 points behind Donald Trump. Furthermore, Nikki Haley has been steadily gaining on DeSantis. NPBA Calls The Orlando Magic’s Donation To Ron DeSantis “Alarming”

Quarterly fundraising disclosures in the 2024 Presidential election revealed that back in June, the Orlando Magic gave $50,000 to the campaign of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The move is unsurprising, given that the Magic is owned by the DeVos, longtime and deep-pocketed Republicans. Betsy DeVos, the sister-in-law of current Magic chairman Dan DeVos, served as President Trump’s Secretary of Education.

When asked by the New York Times, a spokesperson for the Magic confirmed the donation. Furthermore, they stated that it “was given as a Florida business in support of a Florida governor for the continued prosperity of Central Florida.” DeSantis, who has struggled to find national traction with his brand of hardline anti-woke rhetoric, has served as the state’s governor since 2018. While many of his anti-woke stunts have grabbed the national spotlight, his own going battle with Disney is one of the best remembered. Ironically, Disney is the main sponsor of the Magic.

After this quarter’s disclosures were made and the Magic’s donation revealed, the NBPA felt compelled to release a statement. “A political contribution from the Orlando Magic is alarming given recent comments and policies of its beneficiary. NBA governors, players, and personnel have the right to express their personal political views, including through donations and statements. However, if contributions are made on behalf of an entire team, using money earned through the labor of its employees, it is incumbent upon the team governors to consider the diverse values and perspectives of staff and players. The Magic’s donation does not player support for the recipient.”

It’s not the first time in basketball history that players have directly opposed their team owners. In 2020, members of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream stood in opposition with one of the team’s owners, then-Senator Kelly Loeffler. Loeffler, a Republican, was a major Trump ally and had blasted the WNBA for kneeling during the national anthem. In response, members of the Dream actively worked for the election campaign of Loeffler’s opponent, Reverend Raphael Warnock. It remains to be seen if there will be a similar reaction to this brazen move by the Magic.

He is currently getting destroyed by Trump, who is beating him by large percentage points in various states. However, DeSantis continues to run his campaign, while making various gaffs and anti-social appearances in between.

Yesterday, Smith issued a rant against DeSantis in relation to his racist beliefs. On Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery, DeSantis claimed that Confederate leaders need to be honored. For instance, he was at Fort Bragg claiming that it is an iconic name. As Stephen A. quickly pointed out, Bragg was a slave owner who did monstrous things to people. Furthermore, Smith noted how DeSantis continues to make extreme statements, and is simply embarrassing himself at every turn.

Smith has made similar comments about DeSantis in the past, and we doubt he is going to slow down. On the Republican side, Smith is actually throwing his support behind Chris Christie of New Jersey. Christie seems like an anti-Trump and anti-DeSantis figure who is at least a bit more respectable. Although, Smith’s support for him has still been seen as controversial. It’s free, easy, and positive press to ride the success of a hometown team, just as long as you can sell to fans that you actually care. This has led to some interesting situations in the past, when the trash talk has backfired. The Governor of Connecticut had to apologize to the Mayor of Houston after the former made comments about Houston during the Men’s Final Four.

The NBA Finals kick off on June 1, with the Western one-seed Denver Nuggets taking on the Eastern eight-seed Miami Heat. In terms of the political arena, that pits the increasingly progressive Colorado against the increasingly authoritarian Florida. One of the lynchpins of Florida’s “War on Woke” has been Governor Ron DeSantis’ ever-embarrassing war with Disney. Furthermore, it was the billion-dollar corporation that was central to the Governor of Colorado’s proposed Finals wager.

In a tweet on May 30, Jared Polis, the Democrat Governor of Colorado, laid out his side of a wager with his Florida counterpart. “Calling @GovRonDeSantis and @Disney on a friendly wager. If the @nuggets win the finals against the @MiamiHEAT, Disney World will move to Colorado, the ACTUAL happiest place on earth to do business, have fun, and be free! #ColoradoForAll.” Governor DeSantis has not publicly responded to the tweet. In lieu of an official response, a lot of people on Twitter appear to think that this is a genuine and somehow legally binding offer, as opposed to a slightly cringy joke.

The Nuggets are currently the heavy favorites to win the NBA Finals. FanDuel reports odds of -460 (win $1 for every $4.60 bet) for the Nuggets and +350 (win $3.50 for every $1 bet) for the Heat. Typically, state-level politicians force their opposite number to send a state dish and a picture of them in the other team’s jersey. However, DeSantis’ hatred for Disney is almost unprecedented so maybe this silly wager isn’t so jokey after all. Despite this, as mentioned, DeSantis has not publicly responded to Polis’ tweet. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to Announce 2024 Presidential Campaign in Twitter Spaces Event with Elon Musk

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is ready to announce his 2024 presidential campaign. The announcement will be part of a Twitter conversation with the platform’s owner Elon Musk on Wednesday evening.

According to NBC News, DeSantis will instantly become the main opposition in the Republican party to former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.

The conversation will occur over the Twitter Spaces audio chat platform, scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET. The conversation with be moderated by another tech entrepreneur David Sacks. The 2024 DeSantis campaign video will launch the same evening as the conversation. After the Memorial Day weekend, DeSantis is expected to travel the country for his campaign.

For better or worse, the Twitter spaces will blend a rising Republican name and a powerful tech mogul. Previously, Musk invited Trump back to Twitter following his acquisition. Musk reportedly believes that Trump can’t regain control of the White House, opting to align with a future candidate.

None of the alleged parties involved in Wednesday evening’s event has commented.

Florida School Bans Amanda Gorman’s Inauguration Poem, Citing “Indirect Hate Speech”

Just day’s before controversial Florida governor Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce his 2024 presidential bid, his recent legislation, which focuses on eliminating LGBTQ literature in K-12 classrooms, has added several more works to its list of censored or banned works- including Amanda Gorman‘s 2020 Presidential Inauguration Poem, “The Hill We Climb.”

The removal of the work from Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes, a Miami-area K-8 school, came after a parent of two students objected to five titles at the school. The complaint against “The Hill We Climb” cited “indirect hate messages” and indoctrination and was ultimately deemed inappropriate for elementary school students. (It will still be available in the high school library.)

The advocacy group PEN America reports that at least 175 books have been removed from school libraries throughout Florida in recent months following the passage of DeSantis-backed legislation.

NAACP Issues Travel Advisory for the State of Florida Following Actions by Gov. Ron DeSantis

The NAACP has issued a travel advisory for Florida, citing that Gov. Ron DeSantis has led the area to be “hostile to Black Americans.”

“On a seeming quest to silence African-American voices, the Governor and the State of Florida have shown that African Americans are not welcome in the State of Florida,” the statement reads.

“Due to this sustained, blatant, relentless and systemic attack on democracy and civil rights, the NAACP hereby issues a travel advisory to African Americans, and other people of color regarding the hostility towards African Americans in Florida.”

The advisory follows DeSantis’s action on Monday to prohibit the use of public funds on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. According to The Hill, he also recently blocked an Advance Placement African American Studies course in-state public colleges.

“Under the leadership of Governor Desantis, the state of Florida has become hostile to Black Americans and in direct conflict with the democratic ideals that our union was founded upon,” NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a statement.

This comes ahead of an anticipated announcement by DeSantis, who is expected to announce his bid for President. According to The Post, a major Republican Party funder plans to abort Trump and put his power behind DeSantis.

The funder is Hal Lambert, founder of Texas-based Point Bridge Capital, which manages the “Make America Great Again” investment fund. “I’m in for DeSantis this time. I plan to do a lot to help DeSantis win,” Lambert said.

DeSantis recently was reported to not think of Trump as a threat, stating the race is solely between him and Biden.

NAACP Warns Against Traveling To Florida Due To “Openly Hostile” Behavior

The NAACP is advising against traveling to Florida, citing Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ “aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity and inclusion programs” in the state’s schools. The organization released its advisory in a press release on Saturday.

“Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals,” the NAACP said. “Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.”

DeSantis will likely be running against former President Donald Trump during the Republican Primary for the 2024 Presidental Election.
