RIP Rich Homie Quan: 9 Essential Songs That Defined His Career

The hip-hop world tragically lost Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan on September 5, at just 34 years old. His death sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community. His peers, such as Quavo and Playboi Carti, took to social media to remember the good times they had with him. College football coach Mark Dantonio posted a picture of him and Quan after Michigan State University won the Rose Bowl in 2014 (the team’s hype song was “Type of Way”). Of course, fans recalled the period when Quan, along with Young Thug, Migos, Future, producers like Metro Boomin, 808 Mafia, and others from their city, captured the ears of young hip-hop listeners with a forward-thinking approach to hip-hop unlike anything that was popular before their arrival.

Rich Homie Quan was a pioneer of 2010s Atlanta hip-hop, an artist who broke out of a densely populated trap music scene and rose to the forefront of the New Atlanta sound at the beginning of the decade. He helped usher in a style of party-ready music that produced some of the most memorable rap songs of the 2010s. He bragged and boasted on tracks in his trademark drawl, with a laid-back vocal delivery that sometimes walked a thin line between creative and new and completely unintelligible. Quan’s hooks, which became a selling point of his own music and his appearances on other people’s music, were catchy and always ready for crowds. His verses always felt authentic to him. He never abandoned what drew audiences to his music, even when he was at his most commercially successful. These nine tracks illustrate the type of artist Rich Homie Quan was, and why fans continue to fondly remember his contributions to the era he came up in.

1. “Type of Way” (2013)

“Type Of Way” was Rich Homie Quan’s breakout single as a solo act. When this track was released in 2013, he helped bring feeling “some type of way” into the general lexicon. It also became a song used at sporting events, most prominently by that Rose Bowl-winning Michigan State University team. It was a star-making release, with its big hook and equally big beat, by someone who was virtually unknown at the time.

2. YG – “My N***a” Ft. Rich Homie Quan & Jeezy (2013)

“My N***a,” produced by DJ Mustard for YG’s My Krazy Life, is one of the album’s most enduring songs, thanks in no small part to Rich Homie Quan’s appearance. It’s another California link-up for Quan, as he delivers the memorable hook. Mustard’s production is catchy and minimalist, and the verses all sound great. The track was YG’s first radio hit, and has since been certified platinum five times over.

3. “Cash Money” Ft. Birdman (2013)

Though Rich Homie Quan was never signed to him, being part of Birdman’s Rich Gang gave Quan several opportunities to work with the executive/rapper. “Cash Money,” co-produced by Metro Boomin and 808 Mafia, is a great track. Quan reminisces about wanting to be a member of Hot Boys in his youth before pivoting into braggadocio very quickly. Quan didn’t get to be a Hot Boy, but he did get to make some music with the former head of their label.

4. Man Of The Year (2013)

Over a Trauma Tone beat that uses a sped-up sample of “Keep It Real” by Miilkbone, Rich Homie Quan does some heavy flexing to explain why he’s the “Man of the Year.” He reflects on remaining true to himself, while flexing his success, from his “robotic car” and the women he’s been with. “Them n***as lame, I’m the man over here,” he concludes. Considering his rising stardom, who’s to say he was wrong?

5. “Get TF Out My Face” Ft. Young Thug (2013)

Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug’s “Get TF Out My Face” is one of the most impressive collaborations between the two. Over a downtempo beat produced by FKi, Quan and Thug trade bars telling their rivals to get out of their way, unless they’re talking about money. Quan’s flow sounds effortless on the track, while Thug likens himself to Tony Montana. The two of them sound like they’ve made a hundred songs together before this. Their natural chemistry on the early Quan, Thug, and Rich Gang tracks should have eventually led to a joint album.

6. “Walk Thru” Ft. Problem (2014)

“Walk Thru” is one of Quan’s many collaborations with California rappers. He and Compton-based rapper Problem brag about the attention they command when they enter any room over a beat co-produced by Problem himself. The song has a very clear West Coast vibe. Quan always sounded at home over those beats, despite being from Atlanta. It’s a banger of a track with an in-your-face hook that still sounds good today, and an example of Quan’s musical versatility.

7. Rich Gang – “Lifestyle” Ft. Rich Homie Quan & Young Thug (2014)

“Lifestyle” is one of the most iconic hip-hop tracks of the 2010s and the peak of Rich Gang’s run in 2013 and 2014. Initially recorded for the unreleased second Rich Gang mixtape and produced by London on da Track, Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug talk about the grind they’ve been on to find success, emphasizing that the previous couple of years was only the beginning. To say they called their shot would be an understatement.

8. Travis Scott – “Mamacita” [feat. Rich Homie Quan & Young Thug] (2014)

“Mamacita” is one of the standout tracks from Travis Scott’s second mixtape, Days Before Rodeo. The track features appearances from Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug, who rap over a beat produced by Metro Boomin, DJ Dahi, and Mike Dean. It’s a song about women, but it’s not quite a love song. Quan’s hook will stay in your head. He also has the final verse, which is a catchy one with some witty lines. “Mamacita” is another great song, where Quan’s contributions help take it to that level.

9. Flex [Ooh, Ooh, Ooh] (2015)

“Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” initially released in February 2015, ended up being a summer anthem that year. The DJ Spinz-produced track is more mid-tempo with some bounce to it, one that celebrates success and his lavish lifestyle. The “ooh ooh ooh” ad-libs are a memorable feature of the song, and Quan does some trademark flexing in the verses as well. Going 3x platinum, it became the biggest solo hit of his career. Almost a decade later, it’s still an easygoing, fun time.

Quando Rondo Reacts To Rich Homie Quan’s Music Topping Charts After His Death

As the hip-hop world continues to mourn the tragically sudden death of Rich Homie Quan, many are also reflecting on his legacy as an artist. It should come as no surprise that there are probably millions of rap fans listening to him right now, reflecting on his many hits and idiosyncrasies as a performer and lyricist. But some folks think that the love for the Atlanta MC is coming off as hollow or as “fake love.” For example, Quando Rondo recently reacted via Instagram to RHQ’s music topping a chart, although it’s a bit unclear what chart it specifically is. While Quando thinks that this love is coming only because he passed away, he spoke on how he’s a longtime admirer of his.

Furthermore, Quando Rondo’s words don’t suggest in the slightest that Rich Homie Quan doesn’t deserve this support. Rather, he thinks it’s just coming off as fake, although most fans in the comments section of the post below aren’t taking it that far. They just think that people are being nostalgic for his older material. Nevertheless, Ralo is another artist who expressed similar feelings about these reactions.

Elsewhere, Rich Homie Quan’s father Corey Lamar shared a statement on his son’s passing. “Unbearable pain,” he wrote in an Instagram Story post . “Lord please please please help me to understand this. To lose my son… my 1st born, my best friend. Lord let this be a dream…. Yall pray for me and my family. I feel like I’m crushed into a million pieces.” Along with Lamar, many other loved ones, collaborators, and industry admirers have poured out their well-wishes, reflections, and parting messages in the face of this tragedy.

I wish you guys some type of prosperity,” Offset recently expressed when asked at a Billboard event if he has any words for RHQ’s family. “Some type of overcoming of it. Shout out to Rich Homie, man. That’s a day one artist right there. We all came up together in the same lab, in the same kitchen, you know what I mean? Trying to make it happen, man. That’s a tragic thing to hip-hop, man. Shout out to Rich Homie Quan, man. RIP to you and bless your family.”

Offset Pays Tribute To Rich Homie Quan And Explains How Fatherhood Impacted His Music

Offset was one of many superstars in attendance at Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players 2024 event. During a brief interview with Kyle Denis, he let the outlet know that there’s a lot else on his mind apart from his upcoming third child with Cardi B. Specifically, the former Migo spoke on his love of Fashion Week, which city he prefers for it, and which songs pumped him up to attend the Billboard event. However, the most salient and compelling parts of the brief conversation came when he spoke on the impact that fatherhood has had on his musical and artistic endeavors, plus when he paid tribute to the memory of the late Rich Homie Quan.

First, Offset asserted that his experience as a father over the past 15 years or so (Cardi B’s third child will be his sixth) has definitely contributed to his creative process. “You know, it makes you grow up,” he told Billboard‘s Denis. “It makes you pay attention and switch the things that you talk about in your music, you know what I mean? It makes me give a little context to the music now.” Even though he and Cardi are no longer together, their family will surely continue to brighten their lives both in professional and personal ways.

Then, Offset was asked whether he has anything to say to Rich Homie Quan’s family as they mourn his loss. “I wish you guys some type of prosperity,” he remarked.

Rich Homie Quan’s loss shocked the rap world, but in its aftermath, some healing could emerge. For example, Quavo and Offset seem to have hashed out their issues after this tragedy, and we hope that the late Atlanta icon’s family and loved ones can heal and honor his legacy in whatever way they see fit. When asked to define hip-hop in one word, ‘Set had a pretty spot-on answer that summarizes much of what he spoke on. “Culture.”

Ralo Blasts Fake Love For Rich Homie Quan

The death of Rich Homie Quan shocked the hip-hop world this week. There’s been no shortage of reactions from every corner of the culture, whether it’s from longtime fans, newer listeners, or people who had heard of him thanks to snitching accusations regarding the YSL RICO trial. On this particular note, Ralo is calling out people who accused the late rapper of this behavior but are now praising and showing him love following his death. Both reactions are very understandable and human, but it’s clear that this will be a complicated and tough process of reckoning with past narratives and disagreements.

“I just seen the whole world call the brother #RHQ ah rat and now look smh… FAAAAKKKKEEEE,” Ralo captioned his recent Twitter post blasting this fake love. “This that s**t I be talking about,” he says in the video itself. “Y’all n***as be so fake. The whole world was just calling this man, Rich Homie Quan, a rat. Soon as he die, ‘Oh, that was my friend. I love him.’ Boy, y’all n***as so goddamn fake ’round this motherf***er, man.”

Ralo Speaks On Fake Love For Rich Homie Quan

Meanwhile, this is what Ralo had to say for Rich Homie Quan as a tribute. “Real men have conversations that end conflicts before our lord lay us to rest,” he wrote on Instagram “I appreciate you for being a real man, father and brother in ending our beef before our meeting day with our lord. I will extend my hand to your family for any help they may need. #LLRHQ [broken heart emoji].” For those unaware, the two had a pretty nasty beef dating all the way back to 2016, but they buried the hatchet in 2021.

Days before he passed, Rich Homie Quan sought to have a conversation with Young Thug. “We do have a lot of music that hasn’t been released,” he remarked during an interview. “But who knows what the future holds? First and foremost, it’s free Thugger. It’s free anybody that’s locked up, it’s free Lucci. It’s a touchy situation, so I try not to talk about it a lot. But I don’t know what the future holds, man, you know what I’m saying? I’m willing to have a conversation, and it’ll start from there.”
RIP Rich Homie Quan.

Quavo And Offset Seemingly Revealed They Have Reconciled Following Rich Homie Quan’s Tragic Death

Sadly, Rich Homie Quan died at just 34 years old yesterday (September 5). The heartbreaking passing has hip-hop fans and acts in deep mourning over the mixtape legend.

Now, Rich Homie Quan’s untimely death is bringing the late “Spin” rapper’s former collaborators back together. Yesterday, former Migos members Quavo and Offset revealed that have seemingly ended their tension-fueled feud, as Rich Homie Quan’s passing sparked a conversation between them.

Quavo reflected on the calamities Atlanta’s biggest hip-hop figures have faced (viewable here) in his Instagram Stories. “May God be with us. Never saw this being apart of our journey,” he wrote reflecting on Young Thug’s incarceration and Takeoff’s and Rich Homie Quan’s deaths.

In another upload (captured by The Shade Room), Quavo shared an update regarding the pair’s relationship, writing: “Good convo with my bro.”

At the end of the upload, Quavo tagged Offset as he used his song “Nothing Changed” with the late Takeoff to seal the deal. During the 2023 BET Awards, the pair performed a touching tribute to Takeoff. However, rumors claimed the pair were not in the best place.

Fans even cited several bars Quavo that rapped on his album, Rocket Power, to back the reports.

But in April, Offset silenced the whispers by publicly wishing Quavo a happy birthday, writing: “Happy gday my brother @quavohuncho love you 4L (or for life).”

With Quavo’s recent Instagram Stories post, it is abundantly clear that the two have mended their relationship. Although fans will probably never get another Migos album, at least they can rest assured knowing the surviving members are reunited in another way.

Quavo And Offset Squash Their Beef Following Rich Homie Quan’s Death

Things have been contentious between the living members of Migos. Quavo and Offset had a falling out before the death of third member Takeoff, and their relationship has not improved since. There has been the occasional birthday post, but by and large, the two men do not speak. It appears as though the death of Rich Homie Quan has changed that. The rapper passed at age 34 on September 5, rocking the music world to its core. Quavo posted a tribute to Quan, but more importantly, he took steps to repair things with his brother.

Quavo took to his Instagram Stories to deliver the good news. He posted the Quavo and Takeoff song “Nothing Changed” on his Story, along with the text: “Good convo with my bro.” He even tagged Offset, making it clear that the two men were on the same page. The comment section was flooded with happy fans. Some lamented that it took the passing of a close friend to bring Quavo and Offset together. “They should have did this before Rich Homie died,” one user wrote. Most of the commenters were happy that steps were being taken at all. “Good,” another user wrote. “We need y’all. We done already lost too much of our childhood.”

Quavo Confirmed He Had A Good Convo With Offset

Quavo and Offset have talked about each other in interviews. There’s generally a sense of frustration underpinning their answers, though. Offset made it clear that he didn’t care about fan speculation during his appearance on Million Dollaz Worth of Game. “I don’t feel like I owe it to people to show how much me and bro love each other,” the rapper stated. “We went through something. We don’t have to show you n**gas smiles and faces, so stop doing that.”

Quavo has also taken digs at the rocky public relationship between Offset and Cardi B. He took to Twitter in December to make it clear that he wasn’t condoning the airing out of personal information that Offset was participating in. “Nephew ain’t with the soap opera,” Quavo tweeted. “Long live rocket. Pray for y’all though.” The tension seemed to dissipate slightly in April, when Offset wished Quavo a happy birthday on Instagram. “Happy gday my brother @quavohuncho love you 4L,” he wrote. It’s unclear how much Rich Homie Quan’s death sped up the process, but it looks like the Migos rappers are finally ready to bury the hatchet.

Playboi Carti Pays Tribute To Rich Homie Quan During Award Acceptance Speech

September 5 proved to be a sad day in music. Rich Homie Quan died at age 34. There are countless album releases and events going on, but rappers everywhere are feeling the loss. Nowhere was this more evident than the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Awards. Playboi Carti won his first ever award at the event. The rapper had already paid tribute to Quan earlier in the day, but he took the time to give a shoutout to Quan before he exited the stage.

It’s bizarre to think about Playboi Carti having never won an award. Yet, those were the circumstances in which the elusive rapper came to the stage. He thanked his mother, he thanked God, and he thanked the Billboard organization for giving him the award. Carti took a beat before continuing his speech, looked at the award in his hand, and shifted directions. “RIP Rich Homie Quan,” he told the crowd. He proceeded to shout out Quan’s crew, which drew cheers of support from those in the audience.

Playboi Carti Paid Tribute To Quan Multiple Times

Playboi Carti previously posted music video footage of Quan on his Instagram Story. The two men never collaborated on a song together, but Carti has made it clear that he respected Quan as a musical talent. This is not the first time that Playboi Carti has talked about a fallen rapper in public. He paid tribute to the late, great Fredo Santana during a concert in 2022. “I miss Fredo like a motherfucker,” he told the crowd before wiping tears from his face.

Playboi Carti also got emotional talking about Juice WRLD. “That sh*t blew my mind bro,” he explained. “He was really a GOAT.” Carti’s voice cracked in the middle of the interview, and he reflected on the fact that he didn’t spend as much time with Juice as he intended. “Even if we wasn’t seen together like that,” he noted. “We was close.” Carti also noted that he regularly talks about the rappers who pass with peers like Lil Uzi Vert. He’s seen a lot, and sadly Rich Homie Quan is the latest to join the tragic list.

Lil Kim Recalls Her Friendship With Rich Homie Quan In Touching Tribute

Rich Homie Quan had lots of friends in the music industry. The rapper was well-liked, and had iconic collaborations with the likes of Migos and Young Thug. One friendship that was less known, however, was between Quan and Lil Kim. The two never officially collaborated on a song, and the only time they were onstage together there was controversy. Despite this, Quan and Lil Kim had a bond that stretched multiple years. The latter was devastated by Rich Homie Quan’s passing, and decided to open up about their friendship on Instagram.

Lil Kim posted a series of photos and videos the evening of September 5. The photos included her and Quan at a party together, and drinking champagne together in the back of a limo. There was also footage of the aforementioned live performance they did in 2016. Lil Kim’s caption was supremely heartfelt, and let fans in on how much Quan’s death has affected her. “This is the part of life that I’ll never get used to,” she wrote. “I’m so heartbroken. No one ever understood the dope ass friendship u and I had.”

Lil Kim And Rich Homie Quan Performed Together In 2016

Lil Kim then praised Rich Homie Quan for always being supportive and available to hang out. “U always pulled up for me no matter what,” the rapper noted. “I’ve learned in life love those who love you. Rest in Heaven my angel @richhomiequan.” The friendship between the two artists dates back to the 2016 BET Awards. Lil Kim invited Quan onstage to perform the Junior M.A.F.I.A. classic “Get Money.” Quan took on Biggie’s verse, and proceeded to flub the lyrics. He rapped “play Nintendo with Cease at Alamo” instead of the original: “play Nintendo with Cease and Nino.”

Rich Homie Quan felt bad about the flub, but Lil Kim encouraged him to recover and keep performing. Quan proceeded to issue an apology after the ceremony. “I will forever be sorry,” he wrote. “I hope you can accept my apology. To Lil Kim, Thank you for the opportunity.” Despite the unfortunate flub, Lil Kim and Rich Homie Quan connected on a deep level. It’s clear from her Instagram tribute that Kim chooses to celebrate the good times they had instead.

Akbar V Claims Rich Homie Quan And Erica Banks Had “Secret” Relationship

The death of Rich Homie Quan has rocked the music world. There’s a collective sense of shock, given the rapper was only 34 years old. Musical peers and social media personalities who knew Rich Homie Quan have taken to social media to express their heartbreak. Erica Mena was one of these people, but her tribute turned into a much messier situation. Akbar V, Mena’s former co-star on Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta, hinted at some previously unknown info about Quan. She claimed that Quan and Mena had a “secret” relationship outside of the rapper’s family.

The whole thing started innocently enough. Erica Mena simply tweeted “Quan WTF” with four heartbreak emojis. Akbar V quote tweeted Mena and proceeded to blow up her spot. She told Mena to “delete those pics and videos out of respect for his family.” Akbar V then went into more detail about Rich Homie Quan and Mena’s relationship, alleging they had a long-standing connection. “You was a secret,” she added. “And not saying what y’all shared was fake but certain stuff should remain a secret.”

Erica Mena Deleted Her Rich Homie Quan Tribute On Twitter

It’s a bit odd to tell someone to keep a secret and then proceed to share the secret with the world, but that’s precisely what Akbar V did. She told Erica Mena that she better be careful with what she reveals now that Rich Homie Quan is dead. “Here comes all the unwanted hate towards you that you didn’t even know existed,” she warned. “Think before you do stuff lil one.” Mena didn’t say or do anything that was incriminating before Akbar V’s post. She did, however, remove her initial post after Akbar V’s warning.

It remains to be seen whether the Quan claims are true. Mena deleting the post is a little suspicious, but the Love and Hip Hop star has a long, sordid history with Akbar V. It’s possible she just wanted to avoid conflict with the rapper. Akbar V had nothing to do with Mena getting fired from Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta, but the two celebs did get into several disagreements during their shared screen time. Rich Homie Quan is survived by his girlfriend, Amber Williams, and his four children. He shared his two youngest with Williams, who made the fateful 911 call after the rapper died.

Rich Homie Quan Spoke On Young Thug Reconciliation Days Before Reported Death

The alleged death of Rich Homie Quan sent the hip-hop world into a mournful state of shock recently, and for good reason. While this news is still mysterious and mostly speculative, as we don’t have any official confirmation or cause of death, it still inspired many tributes and homages on social media. One of the prevailing narratives around this concerns RHQ’s strong collaborative bond with Young Thug, one that eventually fell out of favor for relatively unknown reasons. In fact, just a few days before news of his passing broke, he had expressed a willingness to have a conversation with Thug to release more music together during an interview.

“And I heard you once say, ‘Screaming Free Thugger,’ right?” the interviewer asked Rich Homie Quan. “Is there any chance that at some point in the future, either be unreleased music or whatnot, that we’ll hear y’all on a song together again?” “Um, that I don’t know,” he responded. “Because we do have a lot of unreleased. We do have a lot of music that hasn’t been released. But who knows what the future holds? First and foremost, it’s free Thugger. It’s free anybody that’s locked up, it’s free Lucci. It’s a touchy situation, so I try not to talk about it a lot. But I don’t know what the future holds, man, you know what I’m saying? I’m willing to have a conversation, and it’ll start from there.”

In other YSL-related news, Lil Woody recently paid tribute to Rich Homie Quan. “RIP,” he wrote in an Instagram post that featured a picture of the reportedly late rapper and Young Thug. “I hate this happen I pray that God protect thug and them from this country.”

Elsewhere, many more loved ones, collaborators, and famous figures are making sure to send their love to Rich Homie Quan online. The circumstances behind all this are still very unclear. We might sadly never know what could’ve been of his bond with Young Thug. Perhaps the near future will illuminate some of these questions. For now, hip-hop is in a state of mourning, and our condolences go out to the Atlanta MC’s family and loved ones.
