Kelis Accused Beyoncé Of Stealing Sample On New ‘Renaissance’ Album

Singer-songwriter Kelis is accusing Beyoncé of stealing a sample for her new album, Renaissance.  Beyoncé’s track, “Energy”, samples Kelis’ “Get Along With You” from her 1999 debut album, Kaleidoscope

Kelis is saying the sample was used without any notification, approval or permission, and she herself didn’t know her song was being used on Beyonce’s album until she found out on social media.

The 42-year-old R&B singer made several comments online about the song, calling it “theft,” “robbery,” and “disrespectful.”

“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding” she expressed online. “I heard about this the same way everyone else did. Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”

“Get Along With You” was written and produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes and are also listed in the artist credits for the Renaissance track, “Energy.” Kelis is not credited.

Beyoncé made no comment on the matter, instead announcing two more albums after Renaissance drops.

Renaissance, the first solo album from Beyoncé since 2016’s Lemonade, is officially available. The new release comes a month after introducing the Renaissance-era with the “Break My Soul” single. Renaissance is the first of a three-act project, delivering 16 singles to her fans.

Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” has officially entered the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The single is now the first solo top 10 single for Queen Bey in 6 years.

Ahead of the release of the album, Queen Bey’s mom, Tina Lawson, spoke with Entertainment Tonight about the release.

“I’m very, very excited,” Lawson said. “I just posted recently that I really miss her singing, and I do. I’m as excited as everybody else. I can’t wait for you guys to hear it. She put two years of love into this. Many, many nights all night working. So, I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”

“Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world,” Bey said online. “It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.”

Through released credits, collaborators or composers include JAY-Z, Drake, Lucky Daye, Syd, No I.D., Tems, Hit-Boy, Raphael Saadiq, The Neptunes, Sabrina Claudio, The-Dream, and more.

Kelis Says She Didn’t Know She Was Sampled On Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’: ‘It’s Not A Collab It’s Theft’

Beyoncé’s highly anticipated album Renaissance, arriving tomorrow, is full of sampled artists, including Donna Summer, Big Freedia, and Kelis. Kelis, though, is not happy about it. On an Instagram post made by the account @kelistrends about Kelis being sampled on Renaissance, Kelis shared her frustrations in the comments.

“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding,” she wrote. “I heard about this the same way everyone else did . Nothing is ever as it seems , some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”

She argued with fans in the comments, replying to those excited about the collaboration: “it’s not a collab it’s theft,” she wrote. People pointed out that her beef is not with Beyoncé but instead with Pharrell, who she accused of stealing profits from her after she worked with him on her first two records. She opened up about the feud in an interview last year: “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it,’” she told the journalist. “I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’”

Beyonce Shares The Regal, Near-Nude ‘Renaissance’ Cover

Even though Beyonce has announced her comeback album, Renaissance, and released its house-influenced first single “Break My Soul,” there were probably at least a few fans who still thought she might be trolling. But no, it’s definitely real. Beyonce herself shared the latest evidence via her little-used social media profiles, dropping the striking cover for the album, which features a near-nude Beyonce sitting astride a crystalline horse glowing with electricity.

The rollout for Renaissance has been a roller coaster of emotions for members of the Beyhive, who got their first inkling of a potential new project early this month when Beyonce wiped her social media. Then, when she updated her official site with a placeholder image for the album, fans wondered whether she was just plotting on another Ivy Park drop, refusing to fully invest lest she dash their hopes with a new collection of sweatpants or something.

But then, she actually announced the album — which appears to be a multi-parter heavy on both dance and country vibes — leading to excitement and relief as the long wait since Lemonade finally appears to be coming to an end. Meanwhile, “Break My Soul” has generated a wave of good vibes, drawing emotional responses from the song’s inspiration Robin S., sampled artist Big Freedia, and writer The-Dream.

It’s just too bad Azealia Banks isn’t too enthused about the mashups with her music the song has inspired. Aside from Banks’ sour grapes, though, the anticipation has been a lot of fun and July 29 can’t get here soon enough. Check out that art above.
