Warren G Recalls Snoop Dogg & Russell Simmons’ Unsuccessful Attempt To Get His Masters From Def Jam

Warren G says he once teamed up with Snoop Dogg and Russell Simmons in an attempt to convince Def Jam to let him regain his rights to his masters, but the move was unsuccessful. He recalled the attempt and discussed his frustration with the record label during a recent interview with Bootleg Kev. “I reached out to ’em, sh*t me, Snoop [Snoop Dogg] and Russell [Russell Simmons] even tried to talk to the counsel and tried to make it happen,” Warren G revealed, as caught by AllHipHop. “They was like, ‘no’. It’s like damn. That’s just like a slap in the face.”

From there, he brought up how much he did for the record label and expressed his hope that perhaps they’ll honor his wishes all these years later. “And that’s even like today, I’m like, I would think that they would talk to UMG, Def Jam, and say, ‘look, this dude did a lot for us,’” he continued. “He saved us. He got us out the red. Let’s reward him back, honor him and give him his masters. Let’s not make him wait another four years, let’s give it to ’em right now. Why juice me for the rest of the—y’all been juicing me for 30 years?”

YFN Lucci Could Come Home In Early 2025 According To Record Label’s Parole Update

YFN Lucci just got a promising update in his sentence on RICO charges, according to his label Think It’s A Game Records. They recently took to social media to announce that he received a tentative parole date of January 2025, meaning that he could go home very soon. This follows a previous Los Angeles Times report that posited a similar development. In addition, this comes months after Fulton County’s District Attorney, Fani Willis, issued a letter in support of the Atlanta rapper’s early release from jail to the State Board of Pardons and Paroles back in July. Of course, take this with a grain of salt, as it’s still an early report and doesn’t confirm a surefire freedom date.

After all, YFN Lucci sought this outcome before, and it looks like he might be more successful this time around. For those unaware, law enforcement arrested him back in 2021 over a RICO indictment, and he pleaded guilty to one count of violating Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act in January of 2024. The court sentenced him to ten years in prison and ten years on probation. As for the former, a judge ruled that the time he already served became credit for his prison sentence.

YFN Lucci Gets Crucial Parole Update

“Pursuant to the parties’ negotiated agreement, the State does not object to Defendant, Rayshawn Bennett[‘s release from prison] from Department of Corrections the first time he becomes eligible for parole or after serving one-third of his prison sentence, whichever comes first,” Fulton County D.A. Fani Willis wrote concerning YFN Lucci. “This recommendation by the State [rests] upon the Defendant’s compliance with the lawful authority of all Department of Corrections personnel and [the absence of any] incidents of any kind in any facility [that housed him] while in the custody of the Department of Corrections.”

Meanwhile, this YFN Lucci news arrives after another massive update in another Atlanta hip-hop criminal trial this week. Young Thug took a plea deal in the YSL RICO case, and the judge’s sentence allowed him to leave jail on 15 years of probation. We will see whether a similar fate emerges for Lucci.

Ari Lennox Accuses Multiple Record Labels Of Scamming Her

Ari Lennox says that she’s been scammed by two different record labels over the course of her career. Speaking about her experiences in the industry during a recent post on social media, the Age/Sex/Location singer recalled losing out on a chance to go on American Idol over her relationship with one of the companies.

“The first label I signed to, I think it was a scam,” she said. “I don’t even think it was real because when I signed to Interscope, they literally disappeared. They literally disappeared. It makes me feel like all them years I was stressing. Crayon corporation. I feel like they got me because, I was so scared. Like I said, I’ve told y’all this story before. I tried out for American Idol. Every time I got to Hollywood, I got my ticket to Hollywood, I was afraid to lie. So, I told them, ‘Hey, I am under contract.’ And then American Idol was like, ‘Well, there’s nothing we can do.’ And rightfully so if I was already under contract. So I guess I’m grateful everything went down the way it did because I don’t think I would’ve performed well on American Idol.”

From there, she explained that she ended up signing another deal with a different label that also scammed her. Regardless, she says that she’s cool with them now despite the incident. When The Jasmine Brand shared the clip on Instagram, fans commented with plenty of supportive messages. “I’m convinced that these record labels lost their A&R divisions, and start signing artist just to shelve them to stop competition,” one user wrote. “I also think there’s no real desire to hear R&B music from the general public.” Another added: “It’s messed up that ppl with true talents get rob for it ..versus ppl without getting deals to sell and promote bullshat which only shows it’s a narrative to push ignorance to the blk communities.”

Chloe Bailey Inadvertently Sparks Anger Towards Beyonce After Revealing The Reason She’s Been Unable To Perform

Chloe Bailey explained why she isn’t performing live more often during a recent livestream with fans on social media. In doing so, she explained that shows cost money and her label hasn’t approved the budgets she’s needed. In response, fans have been clamoring for Beyonce to get her more help, as she has a deal with the iconic singer’s record label, Parkwood Entertainment. Others have put the blame on Columbia Records.

“Trust me, I would be performing if I could,” Bailey explained. “The thing is that money goes into the performances. So, it’s not free to do performances and you have to get budgets approved and things like that. If I could, I’d be performing everywhere.” From there, she defended her work ethic and explained that it has nothing to do with her not wanting to perform.

Nicki Minaj Mocks Laid-Off Employees At Cardi B’s Record Label

Hundreds of Atlantic Records employees were in for a surprise when parent company Warner Music’s CEO, Robert Kyncl, emailed them today (Thursday, September 19). The media conglomerate announced a massive restructuring process for Atlantic that will include layoffs, warning them of some bad news moving forward. This is obviously no laughing matter, but Nicki Minaj barely held back in her shade. Many speculate that her dismissive reaction to this news on Thursday morning is because Cardi B is on Atlantic, and because the label has allegedly tried to sabotage Nicki’s career as a result of their beef.

“Dear fired executives & A&R’s: Don’t be mad, UPS is hiring,” Nicki Minaj ruthlessly tweeted. “Also, feel free to submit your resumes for a job @ #HeavyOnIt [her imprint with Republic Records].” “They’ve been wanting empty arenas so bad. Obsessed with me while all your friends r getting fired is nasty work,” she added in a previous tweet. Of course, it’s far from the Trinidadian superstar’s only Twitter rant as of late. For example, she recently went off on an assistant who made a food order for her, but just had one small issue: she didn’t conceal Nicki’s identity.

Nicki Minaj’s Atlantic-Shading Tweets

Elsewhere, Nicki Minaj continues to share about her life and beefs, whether combatively or in a more measured manner. She claimed to still not have U.S. citizenship recently, and while she didn’t talk about it more, a lot of fans expressed surprise upon hearing this. “I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?” Nicki shared. “I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago. But I’ve been in the States for many years. You would think that with the millions of dollars that I paid in taxes to this country that I would [get] an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago.”

Regardless, Nicki Minaj is a massive icon and probably drove many Barbz to petition the U.S. government unprompted to give her what she deserves. Jokes aside, we wonder what her next revelation to fans will be, and what that story reflects. In this case, it’s partly about the biggest femcee rivalry since Minaj’s original rise and largely about the music industry’s competitive and merciless practices. Let’s see if any Atlantic employees come knocking at Heavy On It’s door… a label whose parent company Republic Records also had layoffs this year, funnily enough.

Fuerza Regida Rapper Claims That Drake Is Starting A New Record Label

Drake is not slowing down. The rapper is either dropping 100 gigs on our headtops or teasing new music. He just released three new songs. He also has an album with PARTYNEXTDOOR set for the fall. But wait, there’s more. Fuerza Regida frontman JOP claimed that the rapper is also starting a new label. The will reportedly be called PFL, and JOP claimed to know some of the artists who will be involved.

The revelation came about on the Bootleg Kev podcast. The host asked what JOP thought about Drake tapping into the genre, and the latter dropped the bombshell. “He has a new label called PFL,” he noted. He’s doing something with us. I have a record label, Street Mob Records, and that’s where we got Chino Pacas, and he’s tapped in with Chino Pacas.” The aforementioned artist is the link between JOP’s label and PFL. At least, that’s what the rapper said. “My label and Drake’s label are gonna help out Chino,” he asserted. Drake’s hasn’t discussed PFL or his prospective collabs, but he has teased his involvement with JOP and Pacas over the last few months.

Drake Is Reportedly Collaborating With Chino Pacas

Drake attended the Houston rodeo over the summer, and walked out to a Chino Pacas song. He also alluded to his involvement with Fuerza Regida on his latest single, “It’s Up.” While most of the attention went to 21 Savage’s verse, Drake seemingly tees up his PFL plans in plain sight. “The Mexicans love me,” he raps. “I’m out here just makin’ connections.” Drake has dabbled in different Spanish-language genres over the years. He collaborated with bachata singer Romeo Santos on the 2013 single “Odio.” He has two songs with Bad Bunny, though the less said about “Gently” the better.

Drake could use the good press. The rapper was linked to a highly suspect Kick streamer named Snoh over the weekend. Snoh has been accused of coercing women into sexual situations and record them without their consent. Drizzy, meanwhile, has appeared on streams with Snoh and urged fans to follow her. Drake also drew the ire of the internet when his Texas driver’s license was shared online. Most felt like the rapper’s ID photo was cringe personified. Check it out here and determine for yourself.

Gucci Mane Divulges On Why His Label’s Artists Keep Facing Jail Time

Gucci Mane’s 1017 Records hasn’t been very lucky when it comes to its artists’ experiences with the prison system, an unfortunate reality that is too heavy to be treated as a “coincidence or correlation” argument. It’s something that he’s always been upfront about wanting to support his team through, and something that he recently talked about with his wife. Moreover, Keyshia Ka’oir’s All Things podcast’s first episode invited Guwop, and despite their close bond, she didn’t hold back on some tough questions. While this definitely took him aback for a moment, it was interesting to see what his candid remarks were on something so serious.

“So the streets want to know why all your 1017 artists keep going to jail,” Keyshia Ka’oir asked Gucci Mane, who expressed surprise at the opening. “Oh, wow. So that’s how we gon’ start?” he asked his partner. “I was one of those type of artists, I was always going back and forth to jail. I try to help those artists that I feel I see a lot of myself in.” The “TakeDat” MC also posited that he’s always there to try and lend his artists in legal situations a helping hand “through their little bumps or whatever they’re going through. But I feel like if I’m not helping them, who else gon’ help them? Nobody says that part of the story.”

Gucci Mane’s Appearance On Keyshia Ka’oir’s Podcast: Watch

Furthermore, that part of the story is crucial when you consider the careers of Pooh Shiesty, Foogiano, Hoodrich Pablo Juan, Ralo, and more 1017 affiliates caught up in the prison system. Some of them already made it out, others remain behind bars, but Gucci Mane has publicly stood by all of them throughout their struggles. It’s not easy for a label boss to manage all these different careers, and even harder to see them develop in the way they have. But it’s a process he always seems willing to go through.

Meanwhile, speaking of Keyshia Ka’oir, she recently addressed pregnancy rumors that seek to take their relationship to the next level. We can only wonder what other revelations might come forward as a result of this All Things podcast, for which we’ll have to wait and see. As for 1017 Records, we wish all these artists the best in achieving accountability, dealing with their situations, and making it out. We’re sure that once they are free, Gucci Mane will be there with open arms to welcome them back to the game.

UMG Denies Intervening In Drake And Kendrick Lamar Battle

Never has a rap battle been saddled with so many conspiracy theories and false leads. Drake and Kendrick Lamar has not only had to contend with fake diss songs, but they’ve spread information about the other person without providing concrete evidence. The misinformation spree continued on May 7. Drake’s record label, UMG, was accused of stepping in and putting an end to the battle because the rapper was “losing.” A document surfaced online with a list of steps UMG has taken to end things.

The document in question claimed that UMG asked The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar to end their battle with Drake. It detailed Zoom meetings with the artists’ respective labels, and claims that UMG was losing money over Drake’s pedophile allegations. “Drake is losing the beef in UMG’s eyes,” the document read. “So from UMG’s perspective, the sooner than this beef ends the better.” It didn’t take long for real UMG reps to speak out and state that none of these actions have been taken.

UMG, which is short for Universal Music Group, issued a denial to TMZ. The label has never considered getting involved in the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle. “Kendrick and Drake’s beef is between them and completely separate from the business side of things,” TMZ reported. “And UMG just doesn’t think it’s their place to step in either way.” It’s easy to see why UMG is staying clear. The label is reaping the benefiting from the battle with historic streaming numbers.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar will draw over 250 million streams in the United States this week. This means that the handful of releases between will make up a staggering 20% of all streams on the Billboard Hot 100. Firstly, Drake, UMG’s artist, managed to land a top 20 single with “Push Ups.” Secondly, the music video for his follow-up diss, “Family Matters,” trended number one on YouTube. It’s since racked up an impressive 17 million views. If anything, UMG would benefit from the battle continuing to unfold. Drake may have had another diss prepped to drop on May 7, but a shooting outside of his home led to a delay.

Meek Mill Wants A Bank Loan To Start New Record Label, Cites Massive Career Earnings

Meek Mill is looking to start a new record label but is struggling to find a bank to do business with. He explained his situation and asked fans for advice in a series of posts on Twitter, earlier this week.

“What bank can I do music business with, the overhead on making music is low,” Meek asked. “Working a project can cost up to 5m for me and one hit song can make 25m like ‘going bad did’ regular hits 10m at low… we don’t get data from labels how much money each song made quarterly.” In a follow-up post, he added: “How can you actually negotiate a deal if you don’t know how much you streaming in dollars monthly … most of the times artist get confused in business and lose their creative spark.”

Music is too easy to generate money for me!” He also went on to clarify that he and Rick Ross remain on good terms as business partners. “Don’t get it confused me and Ross handled the business and still getting money from every direction,” he wrote.

Meek Mill On Starting A Record Label

In response to the post, fans shared plenty of ideas with the Philadelphia rapper. “Focus on Value, Not Exact Numbers,” one user replied. “Shift the conversation: Instead of dwelling on specific dollar amounts, emphasize what you bring to the table. Discuss: Audience size and demographics: What kind of viewers do you attract (age, interests, location) Engagement levels, etc.” Another wrote: “Navigating a deal without full insight into your streaming revenue can be challenging. To tackle this, artists often work with a team that includes a music business lawyer, a manager, and possibly a financial advisor.” Be on the lookout for further updates on Meek Mill on HotNewHipHop.
