Rapsody & Erykah Badu Are Lovestruck On “3:AM”

About two and half months ago, Erykah Badu celebrated turning 53 years young with a show in her hometown of Dallas, Texas. Joining her onstage for her birthday bash was North Carolina veteran femcee Rapsody. Their performance together went viral mostly because of thirsty men online. Badu sported booty shorts that male fans googly-eyed and simping. But hip-hop heads were also ecstatic because of the snippet that these two legends previewed. “3:AM” from Rapsody and Erykah Badu is now here, and it is quite spectacular.

This is now the third single from the “OooWee” rapper’s forthcoming record Please Don’t Cry. The May 17 release first began its rollout back in October of last year with “Asteroids” featuring production from Hit-Boy. It would not be until March that we received the second offering “Stand Tall.” The feature list is going to be stacked, with names like Lil Wayne, Baby Tate, Alex Isley, and Niko Brim also in the fold.

Listen To “3:AM” By Rapsody & Erykah Badu

From the brief audio we heard at Badu’s show, “3:AM” seemed to be leaning into the R&B side of things. Those suspicions were correct, as both leading ladies sing and rap about being infatuated with their partners. Badu’s high-pitched and nasally voice on the chorus and in the background complement Rap’s passionate performance. The instrumental is slow, sensual, and extremely dreamy and in our eyes, Rapsody is three for three so far.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “3:AM” by Rapsody and Erykah Badu? Does this get you excited for her upcoming album Please Don’t Cry, why or why not? Quotable Lyrics:

You could take the sour out of lemons with your sweetness (Softly)
Solid, grounded like the ones that grows beneath us
I conceive your fetus, that would probably have my features (Haha)
We laugh, our sense of humor is what feeds us, I love you (I love you)
I trust you, staycations in St. Regis, like Weezy (Let’s go)
It’s hot boy, we hit the beach, sun tannin’ my peach (Mm)

This track is essentially a tell-all in a sense. In “Stand Tall,” she addresses some personal topics such as authenticity, sexual preferences, anxieties. The accompanying music video is also pretty heavy. According to the press release, Rapsody is speaking with actress Sanaa Lathan for about two minutes or so about the things she then attacks in the song.

Rapsody fans have a lot to look forward to this year, as she recently announced her fourth studio album. Titled Please Don’t Cry, the record will arrive in May and will include collaborations with Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, and more.

This marks her first new studio album in five years, and people are pretty excited to hear what she has in store. According to BET, she has also self-executive produced and found her taking inspiration from Terrace Martin, 9th Wonder, and more.

“It was a little nerve-wracking for me because it was like, Can I do this? Am I gonna make the right decisions for myself?” she shared. “But I learned that that was a little bit of me worrying about the wrong things, about the fans and what they’ll think when instead of just doing what I felt was good and telling the story that I wanted to tell, and that’s what art is.”

Last October, Rapsody released her “Asteroids” collaboration with Hit-Boy, which served as the album’s first single.

Rapsody’s “Please Don’t Cry” Tracklist Features Hit-Boy, Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, And More

2023 was a big year for female rap, and so far, we’ve been seeing that trend consistently carry into 2024. Nicki Minaj is proving that she’s still all that on her Pink Friday 2 Tour following her back and forth with Megan Thee Stallion. Elsewhere, Ice Spice and Latto have gone viral with their latest solo drops, each seemingly aiming at the other. As the frost melts and makes way for new life this spring, Rapsody is set to amaze us with her upcoming album. The project is reportedly called Please Don’t Cry, and it has a scheduled release date of May 17.

On Thursday (March 14) morning, @OnThinIce shared the upcoming LP’s tracklist on Twitter/X. Rapsody will start us off with a Phylicia Rashad (who returns for more contributions twice at the end of the album) collaboration on “She’s Expecting You” before showing out on “Marlann.” Afterward, we have the previously unleashed single, “Asteroids” featuring Hit-Boy and more joint efforts with Bee-B, DIXSON, Erykah Badu, and Alex Isley. Some solo efforts are peppered in between those, proving that Rapsody has no problem riding the beat on her own. Other guest appearances on the 22-song tracklist will come from Bibi Bourelly, Keznamdi, Niko Brim, Baby Tate, and Amber Navran.

Rapsody’s Highly-Anticipated Return Set for May 17th

Arguably the biggest name in rap to appear on Please Don’t Cry is Lil Wayne, who’s feeling “Raw” beside Rapsody. “He’s one of my biggest inspirations and one of my most favourite. I love me some Weezy,” the 41-year-old declared on social media earlier this month.

Elsewhere in the realm of hip-hop, Hit-Boy and The Alchemist cooked up a surprise EP for us earlier this year in the form of Theodore & Andre. The short but sweet project proves that both producers aren’t holding back in 2024, along with many of their other contemporaries. Read all about that at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

According To Joe Budden, The ‘Girl Rapper Wave Is Over’ For Several Reasons, But He Did Make A Few Exceptions

Joe Budden is no stranger to controversy. In fact, the musician-turned-media figure’s takes on trending topics on his namesake podcast often land him in hot water. In fact, his past opinions of women rap stars Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion had fans pulling out their pitchforks. Well, Budden’s recent hot take will have them on the attack yet again.

Yesterday (March 2), in a teaser clip for a forthcoming episode, Budden boldly claimed rap fans shouldn’t get excited about the push for women acts. “Y’all ain’t gonna want to hear it from me, but the girl rapper wave is over,” he said. “Just telling you what it is. I’m normally a few months ahead with this stuff, sometimes a few years ahead with this stuff. The girl rapper wave is finito.”

Budden went on to share the reasonings behind his claim. “I think labels are looking at it like, ‘Very few of y’all are selling records, it’s too much work to get your coin back, we got to go do brand deals all over the world with y’all, y’all are expensive, some of y’all are annoying,’ and none of these records are working,” he said.

But all hope isn’t lost, according to him, as there are a select few recording artists that he expects to have longevity. “The cream rises to the top,” he said. “So, Latto shall remain; Flo Milli shall remain; Rapsody will always be there, but she wasn’t really a part of [that scene]. But all of that, ‘Go find a girl, send her to Columbia, get it done, put her in the studio with fucking Mike WiLL [Made-It] or any one of them n****s’ … all that planting the girl in the scene, getting the record and it taking off — that wave is over.”

Erykah Badu Previews Upcoming Song With Rapsody While Leaving Fans Drooling Over Revealing Outfit

Erykah Badu is the epitome of what it means to be an all-time great artist in the realms of hip-hop and R&B. She has been going strong for about 22 years now. On the other hand, Rapsody has not been around that long. She got her start in 2020. Even though her lack of experience on paper is nowhere near Badu yet, she is well on her way to becoming a legend already. Which is why Erykah Badu and Rapsody’s marriage on this upcoming song is something to be extremely excited about. The two were onstage together recently to help celebrate Badu’s 53 birthday. In fact she turns 53 today, so happy birthday from HNHH!

The event was held in Dallas, Texas, according to HipHopDX. Erykah Badu and Rapsody decided to call the song “3:AM.” From the preview, we can tell their second collaboration will be something serene and downright beautiful. Badu soulfully sings as she always does, while Rapsody comes through with the rapping. However, that was not all the fans were lusting after.

In the post above from Rapsody’s Instagram post, people could not help but notice what Badu was wearing. The Dallas native was proudly showing off her rear in skin-tight pink and purple shorts with thigh-high black leather boots. One person comments, “Good Googly Moogly.” Another praises Andre 3000 for getting with her, as they do have a son who is in his later 20s. “Andre 3 stacks we understand 😮‍💨” There is no information on when this song will drop, but we cannot wait for it.

Missy Elliott And Rapsody Headline Queen Latifah Tribute At Kennedy Center Honors

Earlier this week, the Kennedy Center Honors took place. The event seeks to highlight and pay tribute to some of the most significant contributors to pop culture around. This time, one of the honorees was Queen Latifah and the legendary female MC had a talented roster of artists contributing to her tribute. Generations of talented rappers came together to speak to the significance of her influence.

It began with Missy Elliott, who has some recent history with Latifah. Earlier this year Elliott was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, becoming the first-ever female rapper to join the ranks. During her induction ceremony, she received a poetic tribute from Latifah as a part of her introduction. Missy spoke to hearing some of Queen Latifah’s earliest hits and the influence they had on the music she would go on to make. MC Lyte and Monie Love took the stage next to perform one of those classic songs, “Ladies First.” Then finally Rapsody brought the house down with her rendition of Latifah’s song “Just Another Day” as a finale. Check out the full ceremony honoring the legendary rapper below.

Missy Elliott Pays Tribute To Queen Latifah

It’s fitting that Missy Elliott would end off her 2023 honoring a legend. She spent most of the year being honored herself. The biggest moment came during her Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction. Not only did numerous celebs show up to induct her in person but dozens more online expressed their admiration for her work and revealed how she influenced so many.

The praise hasn’t slowed down either. Just earlier this week Trina heralded Missy as one of the “Greats” alongside Lil Wayne. Her influence on hip-hop itself is also still pretty visible. A few months ago Lil Durk shared a teaser with fans which made prominent use of a Missy sample. What do you think of the speech Missy Elliott gave and the performance Rapsody contributed to Queen Latifah’s Kennedy Center Honors ceremony? Let us know which performance was your favorite in the comment section below.
