2024 NFL Draft - Key Takeaways Surprises and Shockers

The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is in the books. Let’s just say it was nothing short of record-breaking night in Detroit. There were 275,000 fans in attendance. Wait, huh? That’s like the population of a small American city. That said, people LOVE football and those fans were able to experience the top college football players from all over the nation get called to their favorite teams. Here are a handful of takeaways from what became a night to remember in during the opening round.

Falcons Shock the World by Drafting Michael Penix Jr.
No one saw this coming. Some pundits didn’t even have Penix Jr. being drafted in the first round, let alone being a top 10 pick, ahead of players to the likes of J.J. McCarthy. The Falcons just spent $180 million in the offseason on Kirk Cousins with $90 million guaranteed. I get Cousins is 35 off an achilles injury but to take another QB in the top-10 is wild.

Patriots, Cardinals, Chargers and Giants Hold Off
For the last few weeks, there was plenty of chatter about trades that involved picks No. 3 through No. 6. Instead of crazy deal making, there were no trades until No. 10 overall. That happened with he Jets moving back just one spot. Bleh. The Patriots went after a quarterback, albeit for the future, and the Cardinals made a less surprising decision in electing to draft Marvin Harrison Jr., Jim Harbaugh took Joe Alt and the Giants may have found a playmaking receiver.

Six quarterbacks Taken in the Top 12
Everyone knew this would be a quarterback heavy draft for this class, but this was crazy. By the 10th pick, J.J. McCarthy was the fifth QB taken on his way to the Vikings. This marked the fastest ever that five signal callers were drafted that soon, beating out 2021’s record. Broncos may have found their QB in Bo Nix, making it the fastest the NFL took six QBs off the board.

Raiders Change Plans with Brock Bowers
Nobody saw six quarterbacks gone before the Raiders 13th pick so what next for Las Vegas? Drafting Bowers seems like it made sense. Scouts consider him a top playmaker who can run the ball, helping LV there also. That said, the Raiders need an o-line and help in the secondary. So let’s see what they do next.

Big Sean Teases New Album During 2024 NFL Draft Show

Big Sean joined Eminem and Smokey Robinson as celebrity musicians who, in one way or another, formed part of the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday night (April 25). Moreover, in his case, he gave fans and patrons a 30-minute set spanning over some of his biggest-ever hits, dedicating a couple to football players and teams while making his love for the Detroit Lions very clear. However, most excitingly for hip-hop fans, the Detroit MC teased that he’s working hard on his next album, which would be the follow-up to 2020’s Detroit 2. Considering how much hardcore fans and non-believers liked not just that album, but also his recent material, then we have a potential smash hit in the cards coming very soon.

Furthermore, this includes the rapper’s most recent single, “Precision,” and something that this performance proved as well. It was great to see him revisit his catalog with some revamped skill and all that he’s learned throughout his extensive and wide-ranging career. Big Sean also remarked on how this was his first hometown show in almost two years. “The fact I went to school right around the corner from here…” he recalled. “I used to record right around the corner at my homie’s studio, and this was all I ever wanted to do, man. So I just gotta say thank you for anybody who’s ever heard a song of mine, sang it at a bar, purchased a song.”

Elsewhere, the 36-year-old spoke on how he almost got a truly legendary hometown crossover to happen, but it just didn’t pan out. “It reminded me of an old Eminem [beat,” Big Sean said in an Essence cover story about a J Dilla instrumental he had while working on Detroit 2. “And when I sent it to Em, he was like, ‘Man, I like the Dilla beat, for sure. Caleb Williams is a special football player. Overall, he has done a lot of good with the USC Trojans. Although he didn’t take them to a National Title, he certainly gave us a ton of highlight reel plays. Furthermore, he won a Heisman trophy which certainly makes him a legend in college ball. There has been a lot of hype around him as it pertains to the NFL Draft. Moreover, there has been debate over whether or not he would even declare.

For instance, a report came out over the weekend indicating how Williams would only declare for the draft if the Chicago Bears traded their pick. Simply put, he has no interest in playing for them. However, it turns out that this report did not have much merit behind it. Today, Williams took to Instagram with a heartfelt message in which he explained his intentions for the offseason. As you can see, he has decided to declare for the draft, despite the Bears waiting to announce a decision.

Bill Belichick Made A Draft Day Trade For A Hilarious Reason

The 2023 NFL Draft set a record for the most number of trades in a single draft. However, among the flurry of first-round trades, the Patriots made a small but unusual swap. Initially drafting at #14, New England dropped back three places in a trade with the Steelers. The Steelers also sent a 2023 fourth-round pick to New England.

The Steelers took Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones with the 14th pick. The Patriots nabbed Oregon corner Christian Gonzalez with the 17th and Maryland kicker Chad Ryland in the fourth round. However, people thought that the Steelers got off lightly in terms of draft compensation to move up in the first. Turns out they did, simply because Bill Belichick hates the New York Jets.

Belichick Gave Steelers An Easy Trade To “Fuck The Jets”

The New York Jets went into the 2023 NFL Draft needing help protecting Aaron Rodgers. However, sitting at #15 with little draft capital, they could only watch as the top o-line prospects were drafted. However, as the clock on the Patriots’ #14 pick began, there were a handful of high-quality o-line prospects still on the board. The Pats could have taken an o-lineman here but Bill Belichick loves a cornerback. And then the Pats traded back three spots and the Steelers took an o-lineman. Turns out, Belichick literally did it to fuck over the Jets.

“They should have had to give up a [third-round pick] and not a four to move up there,” one NFL general manager said anonymously to The Washington Post. “Belichick did it just to fuck the Jets. He sold low because he knew the Steelers were going to take the kid the Jets wanted to take.” Belichick has a lot of history with the Jets, both within their organization and facing them as a division rival. Moreover, Belichick could have taken Jones himself, but to him, it was even funnier to watch the Jets lose out of their prospect of choice to someone else entirely. Deion Sanders Blasts NFL For Lack Of HBCU Rep In Draft

Deion Sanders helped put an HBCU school on the map. As head coach of the Jackson State football program, Sanders’ squad lost just six games over three seasons. That included two perfect seasons in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Additionally, Jackson went 12-1 in the 2022 season, only losing in the postseason Celebration Bowl.

Sanders left Jackson State at the end of the 2022 season to take the vacant job at Colorado. He brought many of his star players with him and has transformed the program there. He has put Colorado back on the map, even if the program is seeing massive player turnover. The school’s spring game sold out for the first time ever. One the flip side, 20 players entered the portal right after the game. It’s a wild time in Colorado. However, Sanders was not happy with the treatment HBCUs got at the 2023 NFL Draft. He took to Twitter to force his frustrations.

Sanders Calls Out 31 NFL Teams

HBCUs are often overlooked on draft day. Just 12 players from such schools were picked between 2016 and 2021. Four went in the 2022 draft. Furthermore, that number dropped to just one over the course of the 2023 draft. The lone HBCU representative in 2023 was Jackson State cornerback and kick returner, Isaiah Bolden. Bolden was selected 245th overall by the New England Patriots, just 14 picks before the end of the draft. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that he was a Coach Prime alum.

Posting to Twitter, Sanders made his thoughts on the lack of HBCU rep very clear. “So proud is you @isaiahbolden23 You deserved to be drafted much higher but I’m truly proud of u. I know how much u want this. I’m ashamed of the 31 other @nfl teams that couldn’t find draft value in ALL of the talented HBCU players & we had 3 more draft worthy players at JSU.” However, Sanders’ comments met a lot of backlash from white people who somehow interpreted Sanders’ comments as a call for affirmative action. HBCUs have long had to deal with being viewed as the “second-tier” in both educational standards and sporting prowess. However, it’s an unfair perception and one that Sanders is putting on blast.

NFL Reporter Accidentally Says Jalen Carter Has A Big Dick

The NFL draft is always a weird time of year. Without fail, there is always something that goes viral. The 2023 NFL Draft was no different, tough tamer when compared to previous years. There was the video of a player’s dad slapping his son’s girlfriend on the ass. Meanwhile, Twitter had a lot of fun watching Will Levis not get drafted in the first round. Away from the draft, but still in Kansas City, Travis Kelce was luging beers off one of his Super Bowl trophies.

However, it’s not just the draftees who go viral. Sometimes it’s journalists who are the ones grabbing the internet’s attention. That’s exactly what happened this year. In particular, one overlooked moment from this year’s draft came before the picks even started to be announced, courtesy of the NFL Network’s Briget Condon.

Condon Accidentally Says Carter Has A Big Dick

The moment happened during The NFL Network’s pre-draft coverage on Thursday morning. Condon, who is a veteran reporter and has worked for The NFL Network since 2021, was covering the Seattle Seahawks per her assigned beat. At the moment of the unfortunate slip of the tongue, Condon was discussing Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter as a potential option for the Seahawks at #5. However, she, unfortunately, concluded her spiel by saying “big dick, big guy” about the 6″3, 314lbs player. Carter’s draft stock appeared to tank somewhat after he was linked to the death of a teammate in January.

Thankfully for Condon, the Seahawks did not choose to draft Carter at #5. Instead, the Seahawks drafted Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon. However, Carter was still a top-ten pick, going four picks later at #9 to the Philadelphia Eagles. Carter was one of three Georgia defensive players the Eagles took in the draft, adding to the two Bulldogs defenders they took in the 2022 draft. Of course, Condon’s error is one that hundreds of journalists have made over the years. There’s nothing especially scandalous about the comment, it’s just funny that it happened live on TV. Cole Bennett Announces Chicago Bears Draft Pick: “I’m Off A Few Bud Lights”

Cole Bennett of Lyrical Lemonade fame announced the Chicago Bears’ third-round pick at the NFL Draft on Friday night in Kansas City. The iconic music video director and Illinois native shared on stage that the team selected defensive tackle Zacch Pickens with the 64th overall pick. The 23-year-old played college football at South Carolina.

“It’s pretty crazy to be here right now,” Bennett said to the audience. “I’m off a few Bud Lights so give me a second here. But I recognize that I’m in Kansas City, so go Chiefs. But I’m really here to say bear down. Where we at Chicago?”

Cole Bennett has made a name for himself in Chicago specifically for organizing Lyrical Lemonade’s annual Summer Smash Festival. This year, Kid Cudi, Future, and Playboi Carti have been tapped as headliners with special guests including $UICIDEBOY$, Lil Uzi Vert, and “a very special Chicago guest” also set to appear. Other artists on the lineup include Vince Staples, Ice Spice, GloRilla, Freddie Gibbs, Rico Nasty, Juicy J, BabyTron, Ski Mask The Slump God, NLE Choppa, G Herbo, Lil B, Tee Grizzly, Cordae, Trippie Redd, Central Cee, and Lucki, among others.

As for the Bears’ young prospect, Zacch Pickens is listed at 6-foot-4 and 291-pounds as an athletic interior lineman. After the selection, general manager Ryan Poles likened him to former Kansas City Chiefs star Dontari Poe. “Like I say, there’s a level of multiplier where they can help other people as well, free other individuals up to make plays. Those guys have those pieces,” he said of the team’s selections. “And then the other thing is just coming up through the ranks, grade the flashes. Grade the flashes.” With all of their selections, the Bears will look to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season that saw them finish with a record of just 3-14.

Dad Of New NFL Player Grabs Son’s GF’s Ass Live On TV

The pro football dreams of Iowa defensive end Lukas Van Ness came true on Thursday night. The 22-year-old was taken 13th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He is the highest-drafted Hawkeye since Tristan Wirfs went 13th overall in the 2023 Draft. He was seen as one of the top defensive ends in the draft.

Van Ness is a pure physical pass rusher. While his game is going to need some work to give him more versatility at the NFL level, he is going to be an absolute beast of a player in Green Bay. However, his dad has managed to overshadow van Ness’ moment in the spotlight thanks to a viral moment right after his son was drafted.

Dad van Ness Seen Grabbing Son’s GF’s Ass

Van Ness was not present in Kansas City for the draft, instead watching with family in Illinois. The large group of hardy corn-fed Illinoians went wild as van Ness receives the fateful phone call. His girlfriend, Frankie Kmet (white romper, brown hair) kisses her boyfriend on the cheek before getting up to hug Lukas’ dad, Jason. Kmet is the sister of NFL tight end Cole Kmet, who currently plays for the Chicago Bears. Their other brother, Casey, plays baseball at Notre Dame. Frankie is well known for her gorgeous appearance and Instagram presence. She and van Ness have reportedly been an item since last year.

Jason hugs his son’s girlfriend and then sends her back to the couch where Lukas is sat with a little double-tap on the ass. A completely forgettable and innocuous moment…if it hadn’t happened on live television. Social media went absolutely crazy over the moment as the draft continued. This had been preceded by confusion about all the women surrounding van Ness because apparently, people on Twitter don’t know what a family is. None of the parties involved have spoken out about the incident, because why would they? However, it is an evergreen reminder that the NFL Draft is the best place to be for weird moments. Congratulations to Lukas on being drafted and we wish him all the best in Green Bay.

Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay Starts NFL Draft Rumor

The Indianapolis Colts made the fourth selection in the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday night. With the selection, the Colts selected Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson had long been talked about as a top talent. As his athleticism ranked far above any other quarterback in the class. However, his performances on the field were not all that spectacular. Whatever the case may be, the franchise has selected the future of the franchise. Or have they?

Colts owner Jim Irsay has already started the speculation for night 2 of the draft. As the owner seems to be teasing a potential selection of another quarterback with his latest tweet. Irsay is more than likely having fun with his fanbase. However, if the team did select Will Levis with their second-round pick, what would that mean for Richardson? Undoubtedly, the fanbase isn’t taking the tweet seriously. However, with Irsasy, anything could be possible when it comes to this team.

Indianapolis Colts Have Early Second-Round Pick

Maybe this is just Irsay’s attempt at getting more viewers on night two of the draft. However, the NFL won’t have an issue with getting eyes on their product. The league recently sold its streaming rights to YouTube for a massive deal. The sport has become the largest in all of North America. So the draft will have plenty of people watching. However, Irsay’s comments will surely bring more intrigue to the next Colts selection. Whatever the case may be, Colts fans may have gotten a little nervous before the start of Friday’s action.

Levis waited all night on Thursday to hear his name called in the first round. Unfortunately, that moment never happened for the former Kentucky Wildcats star. However, Levis may not have to wait long to hear his name called on Friday. But hearing the Colts make the selection would cue all the drama needed for night two of the draft. Is Jim Irsay being serious with his recent tweet? Or is this just a lame attempt at getting fans to tune in? Let us know what you think in the comment section. For the latest NFL news, keep it right here with HNHH.

Shannon Sharpe Reacts To Carolina Panthers First Pick

Shannon Sharpe knows what a successful NFL player might look like. Sharpe was a part of multiple Super Bowl-winning teams. As well as being one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game. Now, the NFL legend is most notably known for delivering hot takes with Skip Bayless on Undisputed. However, that doesn’t mean that Sharpe’s football knowledge should be slighted. On Friday’s edition of the show, the hosts discussed their feelings on the selections of round one.

Sharpe believes the Carolina Panthers have hit a home run with their selection of Bryce Young. The Alabama star was the consensus first pick for the last couple of weeks. After last night, it finally became official. Sharpe, like the Panthers, believes that Young has all the skills to have a successful career. “If you watch this kid play he has it all: touch, velocity, ability to beat you inside & outside the pocket. The ceiling is the Super Bowl.” Sharpe had high praise for the former Heisman winner.

Shannon Sharpe Believes Super Bowl Is Ceiling For Young

Young’s selection wasn’t much of a secret as the draft slowly moved forward. However, the rest of the quarterbacks in the draft were uncertain about their future. But C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson didn’t have to wait long to hear their names called. Stroud was selected second overall by the Houston Texans. As Richardson found his home with the Indianapolis Colts fourth pick. However, not every quarterback got the good news of where they would play next season.

Kentucky quarterback Will Levis did not get selected in the first round on Thursday. Which doesn’t come as a surprise for many around the league. Including Sharpe, who earlier this week didn’t see the rising hype in Levis. Now Levis will have to wait to hear his name in the second round. As for Young, he will be arriving in Carolina this weekend to begin his work at turning around the franchise. Do you agree with Shannon Sharpe on the talents of Young? Let us know what you think in the comment section. For the latest NFL news, keep it right here with HNHH.
