Today in Hip Hop History: EPMD Dropped Their Sophomore LP ‘Unfinished Business’ 35 Years Ago

epmd

On this day in Hip-Hop history, legendary New York duo EPMD released their second studio LP, Unfinished Business. Certified gold by the RIAA, this album was the critically acclaimed follow-up to the group’s debut Strictly Business.

Claiming the #1 spot on the Top R&B/Hip Hop charts, this project has proven its timelessness. EPMD’s style sets them and this album apart from what was currently popular in New York at the time. In ’89, New York Hip Hop was heavily saturated with conscious boom-bap, and the braggadocio lyricism of Erick Sermon and PMD brought something fresh to the rap game. EPMD’s rap style helped pave the way for the flashy New York rappers of the next generation, such as Jay-Z, The Diplomats, and A$AP Mob.

The single from this project, So What Cha Sayin’, peaked at #23 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart and #5 on the Top Rap chart.

[WATCH] New Surveillance Footage Shows Trump Shooter On Roof Near Stage

Screenshot 2024 07 31 at 2.51.19 PM

New surveillance footage of the assassination attempt on Former President Donald Trump shows how close the shooter, Thomas Mattew Crooks, was away from the stage and if his aim was accurate, how close he came to taking Trump’s life.

The footage, which was shot from behind the bleachers that are seen behind the former president, shows Crooks on top of the American Glass Research Building, disappearing and then reappearing before letting off eight shots, one believed to have grazed Trump.

The video was recorded at 6:08 pm, about three minutes before Crooks opened fire with his AR-15 rifle. The question everyone asks is how did he move with such freedom without being accosted?

James Copenhaver filmed the video, and he’s one of the two victims who were struck by gunfire and critically wounded during the July 13 Trump campaign rally in Butler, PA. Crooks hit Trump in the ear with one shot, but fired the rest of his shots into the crowd, killing Corey Comperatore and injuring Copenhaver and David Dutch.

Juelz Santana And Fivio Foreign Call Out Lil Yachty For Trying To Diss NYC

Screenshot 2024 07 31 at 9.40.10 AM

There are numerous people that disagree with Lil Yachty’s opinion that Atlanta is the real home of fashion and trends and the Big Apple is only biting off of ATL’s swag, but Dipset soldier Juelz Santana and NYC driller Fivio Foreign took offense to his statement and wasted no time addressing Boat and his take on fashion.

On one of the more recent episodes of Yachty’s A Safe Place Podcast, he claimed that ATL is the real home fothe trendsetters and New York is merely taking pages out of ATL’s fashion sense.

“I feel like New York didn’t have this…I don’t want to say identity, but everyone used to just kinda copy Atlanta,” he said to podcast guest and New York native Cash Cobain. “You said it yourself. Even, like, the influence was extremely heavy from Atlanta […] As far as style goes, I don’t think it’s shit going on when it comes to New York fashion.”

He even took aim at people from specific boroughs like Queens and the BVronx, saying, “I feel just people on those outskirts — Queens, Bronx — do they even come to [Manhattan to shop]?”

Juelz took to IG to respond to Boat’s comments, saying, “WE all Love Atl But did @lilyachty SAY say the flyes [ninja emoji] N the Most TRENDSETTERS Came from ALT WOW Much love bro,” he wrote.

Santana then highlighted some of NYC’s fashion forward artits that have influenced the culture over the years, stating, “No luv lost br but, NEVER MIND!!!! PS @souljaboy I Don’t wWant No [smoke emoji] y’all got it @jimjonescapo they tryint to erase us from history I’m not even gonn name up @asaprocky @myfabolouslife @ceoslow @vado_mh @bloodyosiris @soberyungwalter @whodecideswar @murderbravado.”

Fivio Foreign also chimed in, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “How Yatchy say ATL dress better then ny w a whole NY fit.”

After the backlash, Boat seemed th backpedal on some of his sentiment, saying, “When you go back to a certain time, it’s for sure New York. But if you think about lately, all the trends come from Atlanta! First off, I got nothing but love for New York. I think a lot of the flyest people in the world were born in New York. I apologize to the Bronx if they feel some kind of way about that comment. Amiri down, do your thing. I be in New York so don’t fucking rob me. It was a joke.”

[WATCH] Kodak Black Swallows Pills On Camera Despite Sobriety Claims

Kodak Black's "Super Gremlin" Tops RapCaviar's Most Streamed Song List for First Half of 2022

Kodak Black recently shared a disturbing video of him swallowing pills on camera, even though he recently made a public pledge to kick his addiction.

Black took to IG Live over the weekend and spoke about being healthy before holding up two pills to the camera.

The troubled rapper looked as if he swallowed the pills, then declared he was “finna glitch right quick.”

Black spoke about getting sober earlier this year after being arrested several times related to his drug use and unacceptable behavior.

“I remember a point in my life when I was chewing a lot of Percs,” he said back in April. “Bro, I’m proud of myself. I’ve never been this happy in my life. I don’t know where this came from, what the fuck going on.”

He continued, “Before I just went to jail, bro, I was taking at least 100 Percs. My average was 40 Percocets [per day]. I’m telling y’all this man. [It got] to the point where I look at this shit and be like, ‘What the fuck was wrong with me, bruh?’”

Young Thug Denied Mistrial And Bond By New Judge In YSL RICO Case

Screenshot 2024 07 31 at 8.50.43 AM

The third judge in Young Thug’s YSL RICO trial hasn’t changed the circumstances for the troubled rapper, who has now been denied a mistrial and a bond in his last hearing.

The YSL RICO trial resumed yesterday(July 30) after a delay due to a new judge needed after Judge Glanville was removed on July 15 following a private meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without the knowledge of Thug’s legal team.

Judge Paige Reese Whitaker, who has been recently assigned to the trial, denied both motions by Thug’s legal team. The mistrial motion filed by Thug’s lawyer Brian Steel was based on the original judge’s finding that his own controversial ex parte hearing was not improper. Whitaker said that declaring a mistrial for that reason would be equivalent to acting as an appeals court, which is beyond the scope of her responsibilities.

Whitaker denied the bond hearing, ruling that recent events do not constitute a “change in circumstances,” noting that Judge Ural Glanville was not removed because he was biased.

Young Thug’s co-defendant and fellow YSL rapper Yak Gotti (real name Deamonte Kendrick) also filed a motion for a mistrial in the turbulent case.

On this, Judge Whitaker said the motion is similar to the motion to disqualify the prosecutors (which she said she needs more time on) and that she needed to go through the transcripts a little further before making a ruling.

Whitaker also said she will make a “substantive finding” about the ex parte hearing on Wednesday (July 31).

Today, GRAMMY-nominated artist GloRilla released her new video, “All Dere,” featuring her CMG labelmate MoneyBagg Yo. Continuing her streak of party-starter anthems, Glo enlists MoneyBagg to be her gym partner and help the ladies get their bodies right. Whether it’s Glo transforming into a cycling instructor or MoneyBagg becoming a personal trainer, the CMG stars look to help these women maximize their results in the gym before the end of summer.

Glo’s success this year comes from her 12-track project Ehhthang Ehhthang, which boasts big-name features, ranging from her Song of the Summer collaboration with Megan The Stallion on “Wanna Be” to her team-up with MoneyBagg Yo on “All Dere.” “Wanna Be” later earned the remix treatment when Cardi B was featured on the song, propelling the track back into the top 15 of the Hot 100 upon its release.

Ehhthang Ehhthang also includes her top 30 Billboard Hot 100 song “Yeah Glo!” After 23 weeks, the song remains a strong player on the charts, currently sitting at No. 50 this week. Her latest triumph came when she unleashed her Rihanna-cosigned track “TGIF,” which first became a viral hit when she teased the song when opening for Megan Thee Stallion on her sold-out Hot Girl Summer Tour earlier this summer.

Earlier this month, Glo was a presenter at the ESPYs alongside NBA star Draymond Green, where they awarded college phenom Juju Watkins with the Best Breakthrough Athlete award.

NYC Mayor Adams Blocks Ban On Solitary Confinement One Day Before Law Took Effect

Screenshot 2024 07 30 at 4.01.56 PM

NYC Mayor Eric Adams has been receiving backlash from community advocates after he blocked a ban on solitary confinement, blocking the city council’s bill over the weekend just one day before the ban was scheduled to take effect.

Community advocate Jumaani Williams criticized the Mayor’s “11th hour” decision to block the bill, saying, “King Adams trying to show what he can do in his kingdom. You are not above the laws, Mr. Mayor. Please stop abusing your power.”

Adams issued a State of Emergency just one day before the law for the ban would take effect, which was the same ban he vetoed, but was blocked by the City Council. “All we ask for is time for the judge to analyze these parts of the bill that the monitor stated is dangerous and can bring harm”, said Adams. The Mayor alleges that the staff and other resources necessary to carry out this type of ban just isn’t available.

The ban, also known as “Local Law 42”, was passed unanimously by the City Council last year.

It limits isolation to four hours per day, that inmate in confinement must be monitored ever y15 minutes and details reports have to be presented as to why the prisoner is placed in solitary confinement on a case to case basis. It also limits the use of handcuffs and leg restraints when an inmate is being transported.

A federal monitor overseeing reforms at Riker’s Island, NYC’s central jail system and the largest jail facility on the planet, wrote in a report that “the city’s correctional department is too dysfunctional to implement solitary confinement limits.”

Adams claims that he was negotiating with the City Council’s legal team in an attempt to scale back parts of the bill, but says that the negotiation was unsuccessful.

“I’m not going to put these inmates or my employees at Riker’s Island in danger,” said the Mayor.

This month, the City Council passed a resolution that would allow the Speaker of the Council to bring legal action against the Adams Administration in order to make sure this ban goes into effect.

Kid Cudi Teams Up With Saleka For “Divine”, ‘LADY RAVEN’ (Original Music From The Motion Picture TRAP) Out August 2

unnamed 84

Following the worldwide premiere of TRAP in New York City this week, Columbia Recording artist, songwriter, musician, and producer SALEKA and GRAMMY Award-winning rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor, Kid Cudi join for her latest track, DIVINE, taken from the highly anticipated album, LADY RAVEN (Original Music From The Motion Picture TRAP) out on August 2.

LADY RAVEN (Original Music From The Motion Picture TRAP) features music composed, produced, and performed by SALEKA for the Warner Bros. Pictures film TRAP in which she makes her feature film acting debut. Featuring special guests Kid CudiRuss, and AmaaraeLADY RAVEN (Original Music From The Motion Picture TRAP) boasts 14 original songs, each crafted specifically to the script and narrative of the film, blending SALEKA‘s classical piano training with her distinct dark-pop-R&B production and tonality.

“There’s a duality to the Soundtrack,” SALEKA notes. “I wanted to make an album that could stand on its own and embody the sounds and genres I love. At the same time, every song was made for a specific scene with clear intention. Having the external storyline made the process so inspiring though. I could write in a way that was incredibly free since I wasn’t thinking about myself. I ended up editing myself less and exploring facets of my own emotions that I would be too scared to dive into without having Lady Raven to speak through.”

In TRAP, her character “Lady Raven” performs a powerhouse concert as a gripping and thrilling story unfolds concurrently. She penned the songs to entwine with her father’s script, so the rhythm of the music and the story symbiotically depend on one another. Simultaneously, she mined an expansive emotional and sonic spectrum.

Today in Hip-Hop History: UGK Dropped Their Third LP ‘Ridin’ Dirty’ 28 Years Ago

tumblr 35147dcdccdaee2182c1139185f8fd26 39bb9df3 1280

For countless reasons, Ridin’ Dirty, UGK’s third full-length LP, hits as close to home in 2020 as it does when it was first released 28 years ago on July 30, 1996. This doesn’t surprise Bun B, nor would it bewilder Pimp C if he were still physically among us today.

Coming together to form the Underground Kingz in the late 80s, the two Port Arthur, Texas-born musicians knew exactly what they were seeking to achieve when they walked into the studio for their third go-around at a full-length project, creating what unknowingly at the time would inspire two generations (and counting) of what has become quintessential Southern Hip Hop.

The album solidified UGK’s permanent place within the culture, with the group unapologetically speaking for an entire region and paving the way for the artists that came after them, much like the leaders within the East and West coast music scenes were doing. However, pioneering the uncharted Southern frontier for Hip Hop wasn’t an easy task, with Pimp C and Bun B running into various sets of challenges along the way, such as proving themselves simultaneously as innovators of the genre and as masters of the craft.

Twenty eight years ago, on the record’s release date, a commercial aired on television promoting the project without involving the creative input of Pimp and Bun. When the pair saw the advertisement for the first time, both were perplexed as to why the record company associated them with what was, in their minds, an unapproved visual incorporating a scene with a desert and a limousine, the furthest two components of UGK’s day-to-day reality. That disconnect between the music, the mission and the industry grew into what would become a challenging and reoccurring pattern, with the pair having to consistently balance not compromising who they are, while also not angering the record company or resulting in their music being shelved.

“I may have records that are going to get more radio spins than others, but that’s not the kind of music that resonates with people as deeply as records such as ‘One Day,’” Bun B says. “That’s what you want to do as an artist. You want to touch as many people as deeply as possible in the moment. Ridin’ Dirty, for us, was the first time we were able to do that. We were able to do what we wanted to do, and say what we wanted to say, and that’s why the album best represented us.”

Salute to Bun and Pimp (RIP) for this timeless piece of Dirty South Hip Hop history!
