‘Insecure’ Arrives on Netflix for Streaming

Insecure Yvonne Orji Issa Rae

Miss old HBO shows like Insecure? Don’t trip. You can now watch it on Netflix. The classic Issa Rae-led series is the first series to launch on Netflix as part of a new partnership between the streaming giant and Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to Variety, additional shows will go to the streaming services, including Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, Ballers, and True Blood.

The latest development in Warner Bros. Discovery’s content strategy, under the leadership of David Zaslav, is the recent deal. In January, they adopted a new approach by partnering with Roku and Tubi to introduce free, ad-supported channels featuring HBO shows. These FAST channels offer all seasons of popular series such as “Westworld,” “Raised by Wolves,” “Legendary,” “FBoy Island,” “The Nevers,” “Finding Magic Mike,” “Head of the Class,” “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” and others. Notably, back in 2014, HBO had an exclusive licensing agreement with Amazon, allowing shows like “The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “True Blood,” and more to be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

Netflix Set To Make Docuseries On Jerry Jones & Dallas Cowboys

Netflix has delivered a ton of great sports content over the years. From “Last Chance U” to the “Bad Sport” series that chronicled six different sports stories. The streaming giant knows how to land the great drama involved in sports. However, it seems every streaming platform is looking for the magic that ESPN found with “The Last Dance.” The documentary followed Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls epic domination of the NBA in the 1990s.

Now, one of the more popular streaming platforms may have just found that gold. It is being reported that Netflix has purchased the rights to the story of Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. The upcoming docuseries will feature 10 episodes on the story of Jones and his franchise. At the same time, the Bulls were dominating the basketball court in the 90s. The Cowboys owned the gridiron. Dallas’ dominance of a decade sparked generations of fans for the team from coast to coast.

Netflix Cashes In On Dallas Cowboys

Jones is arguably the most notable owner of any sports franchise in the entire United States. Undoubtedly the owner has managed to keep a more hands-on approach to his team than other owners in the NFL. However, that approach also comes with a lot of backlash. Many feel that ownership shouldn’t be as involved in the day-to-day operations of a team. However, nobody wants to be the one to break that news to Mr. Jones.

But the docuseries didn’t come cheap. The rights to this story were sold at a whopping $50 million. However, the money is more than likely no object to Jones. The longtime Cowboys owner would just like to hold that Lombardi Trophy one more time. Love them or hate them. The Cowboys and Jones have left a lasting impression on the entire sports community. Netflix will now get the chance to have fans see the story of the franchise from firsthand accounts. For the latest news in sports, keep it right here with HNHH.

“Squid Game” Made Netflix $1 Billion More Valuable, Its Creator Got Next To Nothing

Squid Game, the smash-hit satire about the exploitation of poverty in South Korea as viewed through the lens of a death game, reportedly raised Netflix’s internal value by $900 million. Meanwhile, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, saw a one-time lump sum for the show. However, he accepted it as he had been trying to sell for a decade. Signing away his rights to the property and any potential residuals made him enough to get by on, but not rich. Now, his show about the exploitation of financial desperation has been turned into a reality show based on exploiting financial desperation.

An investigation by the LA Times found that this is a common trend with Korean creatives. “K-Content” has been an area that Netflix has been aggressively expanding into in recent years. However, Netflix does not have a bargaining agreement with the Korea Television and Radio Writers Association. This means that Korean writers working with Netflix are not eligible for residuals. Instead, they receive a lump sum fee ($30,000 – $150,000) at the start of production. This is all they will have to live on during the 2-3 years it can take to create the show they’ve been paid for.

Hollywood Has Reached Its Creative Breaking Point, Squid Game Is Just The Latest Example

The WGA, the union that represents Hollywood’s writers, is in its eighth week of strike action. SAG-AFTRA, the primary union for actors, could join them if their contract is allowed to expire on June 30. While the DGA, the directors guild, settled with studios on a new deal. However, the people who actually make Hollywood what it is, are tired of being exploited. Residuals are a big part of the demands held by the WGA and SAG. Before the advent of streaming, writing or acting in a show or movie earned you a monthly check based on that property being rebroadcast. Streaming all but killed that. Similarly, with the property owners now simply removing shows and films from their services, that passive income can simply disappear.

The exploitation of international creatives is just the tip of a looming iceberg. Hollywood has been skirting around it for years. But every time they do, it gets a little bigger, a little more dangerous. These current strikes are the scrapes along the side of the Titanic. No amount of AI can fix that. No amount of one-time contracts with desperate creatives can stop the industry from sinking. Every time a story like this breaks, the whole system sinks a little deeper. And yet, the band continues to play on, pretending that the icy depths aren’t lapping at their feet.

“Squid Game: The Challenge”—What We Know About The Netflix Series

Netflix’s Squid Game was undoubtedly a monumental success. It was only a matter of time before the streaming titan capitalized on the show’s popularity. While a sequel series is in the works, a reality television competition show is underway. Titled Squid Game: The Challenge, the show was greenlit and announced in mid-2022. Above all, responses to the creation of the upcoming competition show have been mixed.

However, the anticipation of Squid Game: The Challenge is due to more than just mixed reviews. The reality show has garnered significant controversy as a result of allegedly maltreating its contestants. There have been varying accounts of how players have been treated during filming. Now, there’s a heavy buzz surrounding the show as viewers gear up for its release. Nonetheless, Netflix has announced the show will hit the platform in November, 2023, with a heavy cash prize attached.

What is Squid Game: The Challenge?

With scenarios, outfits, and challenges reminiscent of the original series, Squid Game: The Challenge lives up to its name. The first look of the upcoming competition has been released by Netflix. Fans can expect to see a set that’s nearly identical to the popular South Korean series. 456 players will be dressed in similar green and white tracksuits, with only numbers to identify who’s who. The infamous Red Light, Green Light game, as seen in the original series will also be making a comeback.

The major difference between the original series and the competition is that there will be no real-life deaths. Netflix has also released a synopsis of what viewers should expect from Squid Game: The Challenge. It reads: “Though the reality version of Squid Game isn’t a matter of life or death, there’s still a lot on the line: 456 players will compete to win $4.56 million, the largest cash prize in reality television history. Through a series of games, each player will be pushed to their limits and forced to ask themselves just how far they’ll go to win, with opportunistic alliances, cutthroat strategies, and timely betrayals to follow.”

While elimination by death is expectedly not included in Squid Game: The Challenge, the show is not without controversy. Earlier in January, reports began to swirl that contestants were put under harsh conditions. Importantly enough, some contestants allegedly passed out during filming, mostly due to the harrowing weather. Squid Game: The Challenge was filmed in the United Kingdom. Some contestants reported that the game continued filming even in the midst of a cold snap.

With a large sum as the prize, many contestants understandably decided to toughen it out. However, others were not so lucky and were reportedly hauled out in stretchers. In addition to this, medics were called in ever so often to attend to ailing contestants’ physical issues.

Response From The Series’ Creators

Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of the original Squid Game series, has expressed his concerns about the upcoming competition. He likened the reality show to the original series, in relation to the seriousness of contestants, especially with such a grand prize in view. Nevertheless, in February, Netflix, Studio Lambert, and The Garden released a joint statement on the matter. They denied any claims of any contestants facing severe physical harm.

The statement read: “We care deeply about the health of our cast and crew, and the quality of this show. Any suggestion that the competition is rigged or claims of serious harm to players are simply untrue. We’ve taken all the appropriate safety precautions, including after care for contestants – and an independent adjudicator is overseeing each game to ensure it’s fair to everyone.”

Auditions are currently ongoing for potential future seasons. In addition to this, an American remake of the series is in the works.

“Black Mirror” Season 6 Episodes, Ranked

After four long years, season six of the internet’s favorite anthology, Black Mirror, has returned. Delayed by the pandemic, the series’ creator Charlton Brooker refused to move forward with a new season because he considered the world too bleak. However, the show finally returned on the 15th of June, much to fans’ excitement. Black Mirror’s latest season features newer angles, twists, and even supernatural elements.

The supernatural angle marks a partial departure from the show’s heavy technology-focused episodes. Black Mirror also teased a new category of episodes with its fifth and final episode. The episode, which is tagged a “Red Mirror film,” veers away from science fiction greatly, grabbing the attention of fans.

Nonetheless, Black Mirror’s widely known for its shock value and twists, and season six is no different. With five uniquely written episodes, ranking them is no easy feat. However, there are clear winners in terms of storylines that are already fan favorites. In fact, many have considered season six of Black Mirror a return to form after what some have deemed an underwhelming fifth season. Spoiler Alert for anyone who has yet to watch the season and may not want to know details.

5. “Mazey Day” (Episode 4)

The horrifying fourth episode of Black Mirror is easily its weakest. In contrast to its unsatisfactory plot, however, Zazie Beetz shines in the lead role. Unfortunately, her acting isn’t enough to save the episode from slightly failing. In “Mazey Day,” Beetz plays a paparazzo who hunts down a famous actor after she disappears from the limelight. Clara Rugaard plays the titular actress in question, and she begins to exhibit a series of erratic behaviors after a mysterious hit-and-run incident. While “Mazey Day” enjoys a thrilling final few minutes, the entire episode is slowly built up in a boring fashion. What could have been a top-tier horror fest ends up being a letdown. Worse yet, the supporting characters don’t offer much to the plot.

4. “Joan Is Awful” (Episode 1)

The first episode of Black Mirror’s Season Six quickly signified a return to the show’s early days. “Joan Is Awful” is marked by a quirky plot carried by its lead actresses, Annie Murphy and Salma Hayek. The episode features topics surrounding a metaverse and the effects of AI in the future. “Joan Is Awful” follows the character Joan, who finds that her everyday life is being replicated to an exaggerated degree on a TV show titled Joan Is Awful. In the episode, Netflix is also hilariously rebranded as “Streamberry.” Altogether, “Joan Is Awful” works and is the only lighthearted episode of the season.

3. “Beyond The Sea” (Episode 3)

Episode 3 of Black Mirror’s sixth season is undoubtedly elevated by its lead actors. However, what the episode suffers from is a heavy heap of predictability. Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Mara all delivered fine performances nonetheless. “Beyond the Sea” takes viewers to an alternate 1969, where two astronauts are on a six-year-long mission. To maintain clarity of mind, the pair are given “replicas” back on earth, which they can access through special pods. When one of them loses their family back on earth and has his android destroyed, his partner “loans” him his to stay sane. Unfortunately, this leads to some harsh consequences. It’s predictable, yes, but “Beyond the Sea” is the most emotionally turbulent episode of Season Six.

2. “Loch Henry” (Episode 2)

“Loch Henry” isn’t heavy on the sci-fi, but it’s the most Black Mirror-esque episode in Season Six. While “Beyond the Sea” was a little too long, “Loch Henry” could have been longer. The episode follows a filmmaking couple who visit the deserted titular town to create a documentary. The pair eventually switch gears to cover the town’s mysterious history, and along the way, interesting yet harrowing secrets are uncovered. “Loch Henry” excels in delivering a plot twist that packs a significant punch, as well as supporting characters that succeed in captivating the audience. Its trio of younger actors pairs very well with the older cast members as well. Overall, the tone of the episode is spine-tingling and chilling, but with a highly entertaining plot.

1. “Demon 79” (Episode 5)

Season Six of Black Mirror offers the most audacious episode in a long time with “Demon 79.” The chemistry between lead stars Anjana Vasan and Paapa Essiedu makes for some serious quality television. At just a little over an hour, it’s the second-longest episode of the season but doesn’t feel like it. “Demon 79” tells the supernatural tale of a corruptible Indian store attendant in 1979. She’s subject to racism and discrimination in the workplace and is the perfect subject for an up-and-coming demon to exert his will on her. What results are a series of deaths at the hand of the woman protagonist and an impending apocalypse. From the setting to the acting and the subject of morality at the forefront, “Demon 79” is a brilliant addition.

Jake Paul Gets “Untold” Documentary On Netflix

Netflix’s Untold series has been telling the true stories behind memorable sporting moments since 2021. The first volume covered everything from the Malice at the Palace to Caitlyn Jenner to The Danbury Thrashers. Meanwhile, Volume Two included episodes about Manti Te’o, Tim Donaghy, and the 1983 America’s Cup. The documentaries, which seek to tell the real stories behind the events featured, have been well-received. The show holds a 95% aggregated rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Each episode is released as a standalone event.

Volume Three of Untold is set to premiere this August, starting on August 1. The four-episode collection is diving deeper into controversy than ever before. There are episodes about the Urban Meyer-Tim Tebow era of the Florida Gators, Johnny Manziel, and Victor Conte. However, headlining the series is an episode about an oft-talked-about, much-maligned social media star turned boxer.

Jake Paul Episode Opens Untold Volume Three

Untold Volume Three will begin with “Jake Paul: The Problem Child” on August 1. Promoting the episode on social media, Paul said “My life has been on display since I was 16 but my story has never been told. #UntoldNetflix August 1st. @netflix.” Based on that description, it appears that Paul’s episode will go from his rise on platforms such as Vine and YouTube to his foray into the world of professional boxing. Furthermore, the episode will likely touch, however briefly, on his fall from grace on the Disney Channel. Elsewhere, it was recently announced that Paul will also make his feature film debut in a combat sports film.

The episode’s release has also been deliberately timed. Four days after the episode premieres, Paul will fight Nate Diaz in a highly-publicized boxing match. Paul is hoping to bounce back from this loss to Tommy Fury in February. While he will be making his boxing debut, Diaz is a seasoned MMA fighter who has absolutely no love for Paul. Furthermore, Paul is hoping that a win over Diaz will give him the leverage to take on Conor McGregor. Will you be watching Jake Paul’s Untold episode? Let us know in the comments.
