Chance the Rapper Fights Out Of A Tight Spot In His Epic, Self-Directed ‘Buried Alive’ Video

Chance The Rapper has begun the rollout for his album Star Line Gallery in earnest with its first single and music video, “Buried Alive.” In the single, Chance contemplates the bumpy road of the last six years, from falling out with his manager to getting a divorce, comparing the weight of these struggles to the titular condition. However, he also details how he managed to make it out: By using his main talent, which he compared to the escape plan enacted by Uma Thurman’s “Bride” character in Kill Bill.

The video, which takes takes inspiration from that film and the 2010 Ryan Reynolds vehicle Buried — and seemingly some unexpected sources like anime space operas Space Battleship Yamato and Macross and the Indiana Jones films — depicts this struggle visually, as Chance punches his way out of what appears to be a coffin. Once he’s busted out of those confines, though, he quickly discovers he may have just jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire when it turns out the “coffin” was actually a crate in a cargo hold. Dodging security guards, Chance goes to a porthole, where he learns he’s not just lost at sea — he’s in a spaceship, cruising through the blackness of space. The video ends on that cliffhanger, suggesting that there might be more of this narrative in store as he continues the rollout for his new project.

Wiz Khalifa Previews “Kush & Orange Juice 2,” Listeners Beg Him Not To Ruin The Original

Earlier this week, Wiz Khalifa hopped on Instagram to tease his upcoming sequel to his iconic mixtape Kush & Orange Juice, leaving listeners concerned. The rapper shared a clip of himself and some collaborators in the studio working on a track yesterday (April 24). “Mixing and co producing this album has been so much fun,” he captioned his post. “I learned a lot in the process and took myself to levels i didn’t even know i could go. I can’t wait until you guys get to experience how special and amazing this body of work is. #KushandOrangeJuice2.”

While Wiz Khalifa certainly appears eager to unveil his latest project, not all of his fans are looking forwards to it. His comments section has been flooded with users criticizing the song heard in the clip, and begging him not to put it on Kush & Orange Juice 2. Others are urging him to change the project’s title altogether, arguing that he’ll ruin the original mixtape’s legacy with his current sound.

Did Joyner Lucas Try To Start A Fake Beef With DaBaby?

If anybody had to hazard a guess about why beef is so prevalent in hip-hop right now, they might conclude it’s just good business. After all, Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You song “Like That” debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 behind Kendrick Lamar’s fiery challenge to Drake and J. Cole, and J. Cole’s corresponding response, “7 Minute Drill,” debuted in the top five, despite being deleted just a week after its release. So, there might be a method to the mayhem — and apparently, it’s inspiring plenty of imitators, according to DaBaby.

In a recent interview with Shaquille O’Neal (cancel culture ain’t real, y’all), DaBaby maintained that amid all the chaos, he was contacted by another rapper with a business proposition: Start a fake beef to generate buzz. DaBaby didn’t reveal who the other rapper was — only allowing that it was a “lyricist” — and said he turned him down out of respect, not wanting to work his way into a shoot (basically, start off with a fake beef and end up in a real one). However, plenty of fans on Twitter (never calling it “X”) had a theory of the instigator’s identity: Joyner Lucas.

Enough users have posited Joyner as the culprit that he even felt he had to defend himself in the comments of DJ Akademiks’ post about it. “Man why tf everyone in comments saying it’s me?” he wrote.

Well… It certainly seems like the sort of thing he’d do. We all remember the back-and-forth he got into with Tory Lanez back in 2018, to say nothing of his longstanding beef with Logic, which he admitted in 2020 was caused by “jealousy.” He’s also the rapper who came to public notoriety thanks to high-concept swings like the viral “I’m Not Racist,” which attempted to make sense of recent protests from the perspective of a concerned white observer.

What Did Gucci Mane Say About Diddy In His New Diss Song?

Hip-hop’s unofficial War of the Roses saw a new combatant enter the fray this week. However, rather than jumping into the dust-up between Drake and Kendrick Lamar or inserting himself into any of the other (many) existing fracases, Gucci Mane instead decided to pile onto the absolute sh*tstorm of trouble currently plaguing Sean “Diddy” Combs. In his new song “TakeDat,” Gucci Mane turns the beleaguered mogul into a frequent punchline, reproducing iconic Bad Boy music videos in his own video for “TakeDat.” So, what does Gucci Mane have to say about Diddy in “TakeDat?”

Well throughout the chorus, Gucci chants the newly-coined colloquialism “no Diddy” as he lists his various accomplishments and claims to fame. Among them: “We gettin’ higher than a kite,” “See my artists double plat,” and “Couple n****s got whacked.” Each is accompanied by another evocation of the refrain.

But in the first verse is where things get really spicy, as Gucci boasts, “I got a young Miami bitch from the city / I’m spendin’ money like a trick, no Diddy / I rock pissy yellow diamonds, no Diddy / But she can’t be underage, no Diddy.” This quatrain references Diddy’s potentially transactional relationship with City Girls rapper Yung Miami, Combs’ alleged affinity for watersports, and at least one of the many sexual misconduct suits against him, in which he’s accused of having sex with an underage girl.

Later in the verse, Gucci also calls back to Cassie’s assertion that Diddy had Kid Cudi’s car bombed in a fit of jealousy, Suge Knight’s 1995 Source Awards “come to Death Row” taunt about “the executive producer trying to be all in the videos, all on the record, dancing,” and the longstanding rumor that Diddy had his artist The Notorious B.I.G. set up and murdered to capitalize on his posthumous record sales.

DaBaby Cites Lawyer’s “Life-Threatening” Disease In Request To Postpone Alleged Assault Trial

Back in 2022, DaBaby was sued by a 65-year-old man named Gary Pagar for alleged assault. A couple of years prior, Pagar had rented out his property to the rapper and his crew. Despite reportedly agreeing not to have more than 12 people in the home at a time, DaBaby proceeded to shoot a music video there, which allegedly involved more than 40.

Upon learning of the music video shoot, Pagar claims that he rushed to his property to investigate for himself. When he arrived, however, things quickly took a turn for the worse. After accusing DaBaby of falling through with his end of their rental agreement, the “SHAKE SUMN” performer allegedly chased him into the home. Pagar alleges that when DaBaby caught up to him, he punched him in the face, knocking out several of his teeth. He’s seeking unspecified damages for the injuries and property damage the rapper allegedly caused.

DaBaby was charged with felony battery over the alleged incident, and his trial has been looming ever since. It’s currently scheduled for September 3, 2024, but the Ohio-born artist has continually asked to have it pushed back. Recently, Pagar told the judge that he’s sick of waiting, requesting that the trial date remain as it is despite his pleas. DaBaby said that his team had scheduling conflicts, and his lawyer claimed to be dealing with health issues. Regardless, their motion was denied. Now, DaBaby is asking the judge to reconsider, citing his lawyer’s aforementioned medical concerns.

He says his lawyer, “who was previously diagnosed with a life-threatening and rare disease, was instructed by his medical team that his prognosis regressed, and that he must undergo sustained aggressive treatment and several surgeries that will make him physically unable to work until April 2025.” What do you think of DaBaby asking a judge to reconsider postponing his upcoming trial for alleged assault? What about him citing his lawyer’s health issues? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

ScHoolboy Q Shuts Down Rumors That Top Dawg Prevents Artists From Releasing Albums

Earlier this year, ScHoolboy Q released his new album Blue Lips. It was the first new project he’s released in 5 years dating back to 2019’s CrasH Talk. While that record was met with very mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, Blue Lips has been subject to much more praise. The project sports features from Freddie Gibbs, Rico Nasty, Ab-Soul and more. Fans have praised it for some of its experimental ambitions.

During a recent podcast appearance, Q discussed how many of his label mates take similarly long breaks between projects. SZA and Kendrick Lamar both famously waited until 5 years after their 2017 albums DAMN and CTRL before dropping the follow-ups, Mr. Morale & The Big-Steppers and SOS. In his interview Q spoke on some of the theories fans online have concocted, that Top Dawg is responsible for the infrequent releases of artists signed to his label. Q shuts this down hard explaining that he’d have no incentive to do something like that. In fact, he jokes that Top probably wishes some of his marquee artists released more often. Check out the clip of Q dispelling the rumors below.

ScHoolboy Q Has Top Dawg’s Back

2024 is expected to be a major year for Top Dawg Entertainment as a label. At a show earlier this year they handed out a flyer revealing that nearly ever single artist on the label, and even some new ones who hadn’t been revealed yet, were releasing new projects. Q and SiR have already gotten it started dropping their new records in March. Singles from SZA and Doechii have also left fans hyped for what’s next as the label tries to live up to its promise.

What do you think of ScHoolboy Q shutting down rumors that Top Dawg holds artists back from releasing new material? Do you think all the previously announced TDE artists will actually drop new projects this year? Let us know in the comment section below.

On April 1, PartyNextDoor shocked the world when he revealed the cover art for his upcoming album, P4 (short for PartyNextDoor 4). The cover, which featured a photo of a nude woman kneeling from behind in a pose suggesting an intimate moment between lovers, made some fans wonder online if it was an April Fool’s joke. But in the weeks since, Party has stuck to his guns as he released a trickle of new music, including the single “Real Woman.” So…

When Can You Play PartyNextDoor’s New Album P4 On Apple Music?

P4 is out 4/26 via OVO Sound / Warner Records. That means it’ll most likely hit streaming platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal at midnight, eastern time (which is 9 PM pacific).

The album will be the Canadian R&B singer’s fourth studio album and his first in four years following the release of PartyMobile in 2020. He previously explained the delay as the result of a relationship. Naturally, that means fan anticipation is high; in Wongo Okon’s latest feature for Uproxx, he lists four wishes for the new album, including “a new album cover.” Fans are also looking forward to a new Drake collaboration; Party’s prior connections with his OVO boss have become fan favorites, so there’s a tradition to live up to.

We’ll see if the album does so in a few hours.

Who Is Sy The Rapper? The Artist Allegedly Behind The Viral Kendrick Lamar AI Diss Track

It’s been over a month since arguably the most popular beef in the current Hip Hop landscape started. On March 22, Kendrick Lamar shook things up when he took shots at Drake and J. Cole on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” Since then, many other artists have had their go at Drizzy. But Drake’s more than held his own, firing back some shots of his own.

On April 15, a supposed diss track from Lamar was leaked onto the internet. However, soon after, an artist named Sy the Rapper claimed that he made the track using AI. While many listeners still doubt his claim because of how authentic the track sounds, he has stood by his claim. As expected, the drama surrounding the AI track has made many listeners curious about who Sy the Rapper is. Here’s what we know about him right now.

Background

Before he allegedly released the infamous diss track, Sy the Rapper was largely unknown in mainstream circles. As a result, not much is known about his background. However, a few publications, including Complex, which recently interviewed him, have revealed that he is 23. During that conversation, Sy also shared that he is from Los Angeles and has always loved music. “I wrote my first rap when I was 10. It was about donuts and Lakers,” he said. He grew up hungry to explore his talent, and it seems it may pay off.

What Does Sy The Rapper Do?

Further, Sy the Rapper may be an artist, but he is also a producer and allegedly made the beat of the viral AI diss track. As seen on his Spotify page, he has been releasing music since 2019. His earliest release on streaming platforms is “Zonin,” which dropped in June 2019.

Since then, he has released several singles, as well as two albums: Abstract (2019) and Sore Winner (2021). The 23-year-old is also quite active on TikTok, where he currently has over 13k followers. On Instagram, he has 33k followers. Per his Instagram bio, he runs @qualityimageproductions and @new_wave_media, secondary accounts where he offers media services. In addition, he also runs @innercitykings_qweens and @dripskoolcustoms, both centered on fashion.

How Sy The Rapper Allegedly Made The Kendrick Lamar Diss Track

Although many still doubt that Sy the Rapper actually made the song, he seems to have evidence supporting his claim. During his interview with Complex, he spoke about the process of making the track, from its lyrics to the beat. “I just had to place myself in Kendrick’s shoes, and it didn’t seem like Kendrick would come out swinging for the kill, considering that the [Drake] song was a ‘leaked’ track,” he said. “So, I was thinking more so in the mindset of, ‘If I’m Kendrick, I wouldn’t want to show my hand too early, since this song has been leaked and it’s not an official drop, so I can’t just come out swinging. I’ve got to come out with sort of a warning shot.’”

When asked about his background in AI, Sy the Rapper said he started researching about it after an AI-generated Drake track went viral in April 2023. According to Sy the Rapper, he was intrigued by this and decided to try it out. “With AI, the entry-level is very simple, and it’s not super complex to use. The complex part comes in how you record because you kind of have to mimic the artist and mimic their voice and cadence,” he said. He also shared that he wrote the track in “an hour or two” and recorded it in his voice memo. As seen in the editor’s note at the end of the interview, Sy the Rapper sent videos of the isolated stems of the song to Complex. This was to serve as proof that he did make the song.
