André 3000 Essential Songs

André 3000 tracks played an important role in the 1990s and helped Southern hip-hop move further into the limelight. Born André Lauren Benjamin, André 3000rose to prominence as one-half of the hip-hop duo OutKast. His partner in music was Antwan “Big Boi” Patton. The Southern hip-hop group originated in Atlanta, Georgia, and rose to national prominence off the strength of their first single “Player’s Ball.” Sean “Diddy” Combs, who filmed a music video, created part of the buzz around the song. He subsequently invited the group to open for The Notorious B.I.G. in New York.

After releasing a series of six critically and commercially successful albums across 15 years, OutKast went on an (almost) indefinite hiatus. During their run, the group released many iconic tracks. Each one built upon and spotlighted the Atlanta rapper’s status as a songwriter and rapper. This article hones in on seven essential André 3000 songs. Let’s jump in now.

“Hey Ya” (2004)

“Hey Ya” is quite possibly the most famous OutKast song of all time. The song was released as one of the two lead singles for 2004’s double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. The track was extremely popular, reaching No. 1 in six countries and becoming the first iTunes song to reach one million downloads. André 3000 performed and wrote the track, with writing help from various session musicians over a multi-year period. Since its release, the song has appeared in numerous “best of” song lists.

“Da Art Of Storytellin’ (Pt. 1)” (1999)

The third single off of OutKast’s third album Aquemini, “Da Art of Storytellin’ (Pt. 1)” a variety of publications have ranked the track as one of OutKast’s best. Confusingly, the song was released on the same day as Slick Rick’s album The Art of Storytelling — and Slick Rick is also featured on the single version of the song. In the track, André 3000 skillfully builds up and humanizes an unexpected figure: a pregnant drug user. André raps about their heart-to-heart conversation on a curb: “Talkin bout what we gon be when we grow up / I said what you wanna be and she said, ‘Alive.’” The subject matter and unusual approach easily make it one of the best André 3000 songs.

“Crumblin ‘Erb” (1994)

Although “Crumblin ‘Erb” wasn’t a single on OutKast’s 1994 debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, it might be the record’s hidden gem. When that album first dropped, The Source called this track “a slanky cathartic groove…for anyone who has ever had the hapless feeling of watching your peoples try extinction on for size.” Here we find André 3000 tackling the subjects of selfishness and violence in the South with a reluctant nonchalance. All that aside, this track’s catchy chorus alone lifts it up as one of the group’s best.

“Dracula’s Wedding” (2004)

André 3000 takes on the unexpected role of Dracula in this 2004 track. He’s preparing for his wedding, and his bride-to-be is the singer-songwriter and chef Kelis. The song is notable for displaying the speaker’s anxiety over being married, despite the woman being “all [he] ever wanted.” This comes after centuries of the vampire terrorizing endless amounts of people. Fans were excited when a comic-style music video for the song dropped at random last October, nearly 20 years after its initial release. The sheer imagination and strange humor on the track make it a classic André 3000 track.

“The Whole World” (2001)

“The Whole World” was one of four new OutKast tracks to appear on 2001’s compilation album, Big Boi and Dre Present… OutKast. The rest of the album collected songs from their first four full-lengths. The music video is notable for its high-production recreation of a circus. André 3000 appears as a magician with Día de los Muertos-style facepaint. The song won a Grammy for Best Rap Song Performance by a Duo or Group. It also featured a memorable verse from Killer Mike.

“Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)” (2007)

This song by UGK has OutKast as a feature. It was recorded around the same time that OutKast was putting together their final album Idlewild. The first verse is delivered by André 3000, and the music video centers around his fictional wedding. While certain aspects of the wedding are outlandish – like André donning a red kilt – the sentiment of his verse is palpable. The verse catalogues the rapper’s experiences as he moves on from a life of flings and casual relationships and decides to enter into a lifelong commitment.

“Roses” (2004)

No list of André 3000 songs is complete with the addition of “Roses.” This track also came out on 2004’s double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. It’s essentially a diss song, though it doesn’t target a single person – rather, superficial women in general. The iconic chorus is impossible to forget: “I know you’d like to think your s*** don’t stank, but / Lean a little bit closer, see / Roses really smell like boo-boo-ooh….” The track peaked at number one on both the US Hot Rap Songs and Australian Urban charts.

Hip-Hop Cookie Shop Draws Backlash For Menu Items & Marketing

Hip-hop culture is incredibly special, influential, powerful… and in the United States’ cultural marketplace susceptible to commercial exploitation, highly profitable. Moreover, controversies can pop up every once in a while concerning companies or brands either appreciating rap culture for the better or misusing its impact and pop culture ubiquity in insensitive ways. As such, many folks are split on which of these two categories Cookie Plug, a California-based multi-state bakery shop, falls into. The reason why is due to their Indianapolis franchise’s hip-hop-themed nomenclature for their items and the marketing behind them. But it’s not all that bad, at least with the information we have from a XXL report.

Furthermore, some menu items are very much innocuous, such as a “So So Icy” ice cream sandwich and packaging that boasts the message “Thank you for supporting your neighborhood doughp dealer.” However, other items such as the “Purple Drank” purple lemonade, referring to lean, rub customers the wrong way, including Indianapolis resident Feeray Phillips. “When the franchise is not aware of what the terminology they’re dealing with and, to be honest, tropes as gimmicks to sell people lemonade and children lemonade, that’s a problem,” they told the local news outlet WISHTV.

Still, the team behind Cookie Plug doesn’t really have any problem with how they’ve handled, promoted, or branded their products. Co-owner Doreen Walters recently pushed back against this negativity, seemingly suggesting that there isn’t a lot of overtly negative connotations with something like “Purple Drank.” “Those comments are hurtful so I’m not even watching it,” she expressed. “I grew up at this time and I’ve never done drugs. ‘Purple Drank’ is just that, ‘purple drank.’ It’s lemonade.”

Meanwhile, with these isolated examples in mind, it’s hard to call whether or not this cookie chop is engaging in cultural appropriation or if they’re just showing love. After all, there’s not a lot of accessible information at press time about the origins of Cookie Plug, the specific Indianapolis location’s ownership, and other important factors that could answer that question. If you’re in the city, keep an eye out and make that judgement for yourself. But supporting a business and supporting hip-hop, as much as they are two amazing initiatives, are hard to truly mix together.

Diddy Recruits Alleged Russian Spy’s Former Lawyer To Fight Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Diddy’s ongoing legal issues only continue to heat up, as he’s currently facing several lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault, abuse, and more. The allegations have come from at least eight different individuals, including former Syracuse University student Joi Dickerson-Neal. She alleges that the Bad Boy Records founder drugged and raped her in 1991, which he denies. She also accuses him of participating in revenge porn by sharing explicit footage of her with his associates in the music industry. Per her lawsuit, this was detrimental to both her mental health and reputation.

“These are civil suits with fabricated claims of misconduct from 30 years ago, which are nothing but a blatant money grab,” a spokesperson for the mogul told TMZ in November. “Mr. Combs is being unfairly targeted by anonymous accusers who lie for financial gain. The New York Legislature never intended the Adult Survivors Act to be exploited.” Regardless, the lawsuits appear to keep coming, with the latest being filed as recently as last week.

Now, as he prepares to battle it out in court over Dickerson-Neal’s lawsuit, he’s hired some new legal representation. According to legal documents obtained by AllHipHop earlier this week, lawyer Michael Tremonte of Sher Tremonte LLP will handle the case, which is in its early stages. Tremonte has previously represented some notable clients, including Rinat Akhmetshin. Akhmetshin is a Russian-American lobbyist who sued William Browder for allegedly defaming him as a Russian spy.

What do you think of Diddy hiring a new lawyer who previously represented an alleged Russian spy? Are you surprised or not? What about all of the lawsuits and allegations he’s currently facing? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Big Sean Hints At New Album, Fans Joke That Kendrick Lamar Will Drop At The Same Time

Big Sean fans may have a new album on the way soon. He hasn’t dropped a new album since 2020’s Detroit 2 but that long wait could be over soon. He pulled up in the Instagram comments of fellow Detroit rapper Eminem. Em announced his upcoming new album The Death Of Slim Shady earlier this year and just shared the project’s lead single “Houdini.” Sean was hyping the track up with comments like “Not gon lie, u went crazy” and a series of fire emojis. But his final comment is one one fans have honed in on as it hints at when his next album could drop.

“I’m dropping right after Marshall then. Takeover time,” his final comment reads. Em hasn’t announced a specific release date for The Death Of Slim Shady yet. There is a chance Sean knows something that the general public doesn’t and is plotting his new album to drop after Em’s. But it’s more likely just a promise that he’s been hard at work and a new project is coming soon. But as is often the case when rumors of new music spark around Big Sean somebody else’s name came up, Kendrick Lamar. Check out what some fans had to say about Sean’s newest album tease below.

Big Sean Album Teases Leads Fans To Bring Up Kendrick

Whenever news about Big Sean emerges, fans inevitably make jokes about Kendrick Lamar coming in to steal his thunder. It all goes back to the pair’s collaboration “Control” where Lamar is notorious for having stolen the show. That was the case again earlier this year when Sean released his new single “Precision.” The same weekend Kendrick once again stole the show with his verse on Futrue & Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” The song sparked the massive beef between Lamar and Drake that’s become the biggest rap story of the year.

What do you think of Kendrick Lamar being the first thought on many fan’s minds when Big Sean teases his new album? Are you looking forward to the release of his long-awaited new project later this year? Let us know in the comment section below.

NLE Choppa Proposes That Kendrick Lamar & Drake Should Make Another Collab

We in the media are still fiending for Drake versus Kendrick Lamar takes, and celebrities are still happy to meet and exceed our demands. Moreover, NLE Choppa recently sat down for an interview with Billboard, during which the topic of the most significant rap battle since at least Jay-Z and Nas inevitably came about. He had previously given some takes on the matter, but his latest conclusion is a little bit different to the whole “Why can’t everyone just get along?” narrative. Moreover, the Memphis MC thinks that Aubrey Graham and Mr. Duckworth should team up like they did for “Poetic Justice” almost 12 years ago and drop another song together.

“I feel like the win is more so not about who got the most streams or what song is the best,” NLE Choppa began. “I think the win is more so how you handle the success you got from all that controversy. [The] win’ll be like something like both of them coming together and doing a song together. I think the win is doing something similar to when Drake and Meek was having their feud. Like, they did what they did, but they came back as men to shake hands and made a song. That’s what we need to see.”

NLE Choppa Speaks On Kendrick Lamar & Drake Beef

Whether or not you agree, NLE Choppa’s sentiment is certainly not an uncommon one in the rap game, although this sentiment of healing doesn’t match the skeptical perspective that others have of Kendrick Lamar and Drake potentially burying the hatchet. For example, T.I. and Chuck D both posited for very different reasons that they might go on tour together sometime in the future. In Tip’s case, he called the rap battle the most “exacerbated” of all time, so his commentary might point to the inevitability of chasing the biggest moment possible. This year, it was beef, but in a couple more, it could be reconciliation.

Just think of the moment that Drake and Kanye West created with their Free Larry Hoover benefit concert. Chuck D seems more hopeful as far as what that buried hatchet would mean for hip-hop culture, but it’s tough to call. After all, K.Dot and The Boy went really hard at each other. But would it really be that surprising if they chase a bag down the road or have a few more years to mature?

Channel Tres Quenches His Thirst With ‘Cactus Water,’ The Groovy New Single From His Upcoming Album, ‘Head Rush’

Genre-bending Compton rapper Channel Tres announced his debut album, Head Rush, earlier this month, following the announcement with the release of its first single, “Berghain” with Barney Bones. Today, he follows up with another new single, “Cactus Water.”

Inspired by Berghain’s techno scene, the funky new track incorporates elements of nu-disco, with a hard-hitting groove, a hefty bassline, and a chattering rhythm guitar. Tres details a new romantic interest, telling his paramour he’s “been a little thirsty lately,” requesting the refreshment of the titular beverage — a thinly veiled reference to after-club activities.

Tres has a busy 2024 schedule coming up, with performances at festivals all over the place. In March, he performed at Boise, Idaho’s Treefort Festival, while this past weekend, he joined Ludacris and an army of dance music DJs in Detroit for Movement Festival. In August, he’s on the lineup for HARD Festival with Disclosure and Nelly Furtado.

Head Rush will be Channel Tres’ first album under RCA Records, to which he signed in 2022, and his second project for the label overall after he dropped his EP Real Cultural Sh*t in February 2023. Head Rush does not have a release date just yet, but you can bet it’ll be sooner rather than later with summer right around the corner.

Blueface Exposing Chrisean Rock & Offset’s Alleged Hookup Left Cardi B With Questions, Wack 100 Reveals

At the end of last year, Blueface took to Twitter/X to put his on-and-off lover Chrisean Rock on blast. He accused her of sleeping with Cardi B’s longtime partner Offset on the evening of French Montana’s birthday party, which the former Migo denies. “I ain’t never talk or touch that lady. Real talk man, you need some help!” he replied at the time, though it did little to stop the chatter.

The following day, Cardi B hopped online to announce that she was single but said that she wasn’t buying Offset and Chrisean’s rumored romance. According to her, she simply saw it as a “sign” that she should move on and start fresh with someone else. Nowadays, the co-parents appear to be back on good terms, though it’s unclear whether or not they’re an item.

Wack 100 Recalls Getting A Phone Call From Cardi B After Blueface Put Chrisean Rock & Offset On Blast

During a recent interview with VladTV, Wack 100 reflected on the debacle, revealing that both Cardi B and Offset went straight to him for answers. “Cardi called me her damn self,” he said, explaining that he didn’t agree with Blueface’s decision to expose them. Wack went on to describe how Offset was putting blame on him, despite him insisting that he wasn’t involved. From there, he considered giving up on trying to “contain” the situation, letting Blueface do whatever damage he wanted. When he got a call from Cardi B, however, it prompted him to continue trying to keep him at bay.

According to Wack, Cardi’s call cleared things up for him, as she told him they were separated. “When she called me she wasn’t in a frenzy, she wasn’t crying, she wasn’t all hyper, she wasn’t any of that,” he recalled, claiming that she was simply looking for an explanation. What do you think of Wack 100 claiming to have gotten a call from Cardi B after Blueface accused Offset of hooking up with Chrisean Rock? KAYTRANADA Thanks Freddie Gibbs For His Early Support After Coming Out

Ahead of his new album Timeless coming out next week on June 7, KAYTRANADA recently gave Rolling Stone a wonderful interview. In it, he reflects on much of his personal evolution and his career trajectory, with one particular moment being a key point of support and reminiscing. Moreover, the Haitian-Canadian producer came out as gay in a 2016 piece with The FADER, and took this RS opportunity to reflect on that development. Specifically, he spoke on how Freddie Gibbs was one of the first artists to champion his experience and perspective, which gave him hope moving forward in an industry that used to treat the LGBTQIA2+ community much more harshly, and that sometimes still falls victim to that bigotry.

I still don’t think many people know that I’m gay. Even with that story,” KAYTRANADA remarked to Rolling Stone. “Freddie Gibbs was one of the first artists that was like, ‘I’m proud of you, man, keep doing your thing.’ I thought that was crazy. That gave me hope. Now, we got Lil Nas X and rappers from the LGBT community just coming out. R&B artists, too. It’s more acceptable and more welcome. I heard Snoop [Dogg] and Dr. Dre were performing at Pride in L.A. That’s crazy.” Freddie even quote-tweeted coverage of this thankfulness with another sweet message: “That’s my homie in real life tho [fingers crossed emoji].”

Freddie Gibbs Responds To KAYTRANADA’s Thankfulness

As for their link-ups, KAYTRANADA and Freddie Gibbs have a couple of tracks together, namely “My Dope House,” “Alexys,” and the KAYTRAMINÉ cut “letstalkaboutit.” Hopefully the Big Boss Rabbit and the “Lover/Friend” sonic wizard reunite for some more collabs in the future. While Freddie won’t appear on Timeless (as listed at press time), there are plenty of other amazing guests to look forward to. These include Channel Tres, Childish Gambino, PinkPantheress, Don Toliver, Charlotte Day Wilson, Thundercat, Anderson .Paak, Mariah The Scientist, Ravyn Lenae, and many more.

Meanwhile, KAYTRANADA is fresh off releasing one of the surefire summer bops of 2024 with Mach-Hommy and 03 Greedo’s “#RICHAXXHAITIAN,” the titular track off Mach’s newest masterpiece. If Timeless lives up to that moniker, we’re in for an absolute treat. Surely we’ll get some more breezy jams and bops to blast all the way through blistering days under the sun. But most importantly, it’s great to hear KAYTRA reflect on those who had his back every step of the way.

Jennifer Lopez Calls Off Tour Amid Ben Affleck Breakup Rumors

Amid rumors of a rift in Jennifer Lopez’s relationship with Ben Affleck, TMZ and her official website (onthejlo) report that she and her team have canceled her summer tour, once running in North America from June through August. Moreover, a representative for Live Nation reportedly told the publication that the tour completely fell through. The alleged reasoning is that she is “taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” and she even supposedly relayed a message to those following her website according to TMZ, although it’s not clearly available at press time. Perhaps a specific newsletter?

Either way, here’s the alleged statement from Jennifer Lopez on her website concerning her summer tour’s cancelation and next steps, per TMZ. “I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…” While no further details emerged, the publication claims that low ticket sale rumors were not a factor in this decision. Apparently, the tour garnered more ticket sales in select cities as of late, and these rumors mostly built off of speculative guesses months in advance, as well.

Jennifer Lopez Cancels Tour

However, many believe that her alleged romantic tension with Ben Affleck could be a factor in this decision, as the two have sent out shady but mostly gossipy indications that things aren’t going well. For example, the actor seemed to hide his wedding ring in public, and the singer liked an accusatory IG post that many linked to Affleck. No matter the case, we don’t have a clear answer on this as of writing this article, so maybe the future will hold more revelations. Either way, we’re sure that this is all disappointing news for hopeful tour attendees.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez is actually dealing with a lot right now, given that she might be a witness in the lawsuits against Diddy according to an attorney close to the situation. That’s a bomb of a story and development that we’re sure any celebrity would feel quite uneasy about being a part of. Maybe she won’t show up at all, but it’s still a worrisome thought. Here’s hoping that more J. Lo shows down the line don’t meet this fate, or that they will truly be indicative of the passion she wanted to bring this time around.
