Freddie Gibbs Needs Kanye West As Much As Kanye West Needs Freddie Gibbs

Freddie Gibbs stands as a titan in his own right who has overcome Instagram bans, industry blackballs, and a pair of (alleged?) ass-whoopings that could’ve tarnished any person’s career. Yet, he continues to climb the ranks of hip-hop even after public feuds with Benny The Butcher, Akademiks, and two of his baby moms. This week, the rapper marked another career milestone during Art Basel, closing out the annual Miami-based event on stage with Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign at the Vultures rave

His appearance felt like a culmination of the years of grinding through quality bodies of work that shone throughout the underground yet failed to penetrate through the mainstream. Going back to the late 2000s, Gibbs consistently delivered impeccable mixtapes, such as The Miseducation Of Freddie Gibbs, that showcased his grit and lyrical agility. The underground buzz snowballed into a deal with Jeezy’s CTE that eventually crumbled into a bitter years-long feud between the two.

However, the major shift in his career occurred around 2014 when his long-awaited joint project with Madlib, Pinata, dropped. This project allowed the Gangsta Rap revivalist to position himself as one of the most versatile figures hip-hop whose chopper-like flow paired well with the smooth cadences of Raekwon and Scarface just as effortlessly as the eccentric vocal acrobatics of Young Thug and Danny Brown.

An Underground King With A Grammy Nod

In the years since then, Gibbs refined his skillset to even more critical applause. He joined forces with The Alchemist on the Grammy-nominated Alfredo, losing to none other than Hit-Boy and Nas, who earned his first-ever Grammy that night. Then came his solo major label debut with $oul $old Separately. Gibbs had already lyrically sparred with some of the greatest MCs to ever touch a microphone throughout his career, holding his weight alongside everyone from Black Thought and Yasiin Bey to Killer Mike, Bun B, and Pusha T. However, $$$ was an exercise in commercial viability alongside streaming champs, like Moneybagg Yo and Offset, along with previous collaborators, such as Rick Ross and Anderson .Paak.

The thing with Gibbs is that he’s never necessarily had a fair shot to reach the mainstream masses in his career. Despite projects like Bandana, Alfredo, and $$$ doing well on the charts compared to other entries in his catalog, he hasn’t had a moment where he’s been able to test the depth of his lyrical capabilities alongside the success stories of his era, namely Drake, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar. Still, his recent appearance on Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s Vultures listening party indicates that Gibbs’ reign as an elite MC is far from over.

Freddie Gibbs Appears On Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign’s “Vultures”

Debuting “Back To Me” in Miami as part of the ¥$ listening party, Gibbs delivered what sounds like could be the best verse of the album so far. In fact, the reaction by the other rappers who shared the stage with Ty Dolla $ign and Ye said as much when Gibbs rapped, “This that sh*t that make rap n***as maaaad.” Durk and Offset, for example, noticeably lost their rhythm as Gibbs rapped along to his verse on stage dressed looking like a giant construction cone (he either missed the memo about the dress code or Kanye isn’t as stringent as he was during the Donda sessions). It’s a moment of vindication for Freddie and a massive win for those who’ve followed Gibbs’ career from Pitchfork darling to a Grammy nod.

More importantly, the newfound alliance between Gibbs and Kanye feels like this could be the beginning of a fruitful relationship. Considering Pusha T’s absence from Kanye’s immediate inner circle, there’s an opening for a resident coke rapper and there’s no one better to assume that role than Gibbs. Plus, Gibbs has shown a lack of concern over cancel culture; if he could stand next to Joe Rogan post-N-word compilation, then it’s suffice to say he doesn’t have any issues linking up with Yeezy.

Gangsta Gibbs Meets Yeezy

One could hope that “Back To Me” becomes the first of many collaborations in the future. The Gary, IN native’s ear for production has never failed and Ye remains one of the greatest producers ever, even if his lyrical abilities have faltered over time. From what’s surfaced so far, Vultures is largely lyrically fueled by Ye’s comical bars that don’t necessarily have the same charm as they once did when he rapped about getting a*shole bleach on his t-shirt. However, Gibbs seems to be injecting a much-needed dose of lyricism that would’ve otherwise lacked.

That said, Freddie Gibbs could play a significant role in Kanye’s redemption arc and that relationship could be mutually beneficial. There’s a two-part resolution for Ye to regain the good faith of the public. Firstly, he should refrain from speaking publicly, especially when he conflates hate speech with free speech. Secondly — and most importantly — he needs to deliver quality music that reaches the caliber he once set for himself. For that, he requires a return to his roots. In recent years, Ye’s best production arrived when he worked alongside Pusha T, who stepped down from his role as the G.O.O.D Music President amid Kanye’s antisemitic rants. With an artist like Gibbs who leans into the same dimension of cocaine raps as Push, Ye could very well help the Gary, IN rapper produce his magnum opus.

Could Kanye West Produce Freddie Gibbs’ Next Album?

Although the two don’t necessarily have a history together, we’ve heard how a collaboration between the two might sound like in the past. Madlib initially sent the beat for “No More Parties In LA” ft. Kendrick Lamar to Freddie. Later, Gibbs released a freestyle of his own over the beat, which later became subject to fan-made mash-ups to exceptional results. If “Body To Me” delivers in the way it did in Miami, it seems like a hopeful sign that Freddie Gibbs could add Kanye West to his repertoire of upper-echelon producers that he’s worked with. Ultimately, Freddie Gibbs could end up becoming the only rapper with the bragging rights of having full albums produced by The Alchemist, Madlib, and Ye.

Doja Cat Refutes “Tacky” Satanist Accusations

During a recent interview with Apple Music, Doja Cat shared her feelings on rumors prompted by some of her Scarlet tracks. Some listeners have accused her of being a Satanist. According to her, references to the devil in her music or visuals are merely a creative choice and don’t always carry the meaning that social media users assume. She says that while her work is up for interpretation, some of the speculation can get old, leading her to become frustrated.

“I like the idea of I did it on purpose and it’s this big ruse to make people react, but I also like the idea of—what it is is that I love this piece of visual art,” Doja Cat explained. “I like this visual for this sound. So, I chose that visual and I applied it to the sound and people made up what they want, which is what you do with art. You interpret it how you want to interpret it.”

Doja Cat Thinks Devil-Worship Rumors Are “Annoying”

“Everybody has the right to interpret it how they want, but this whole very confident Satanism thing is like, I’m sorry – when the f*ck did I say that I was a Satanist?” she continued. “When did I ever say anything or even go marching outside the church? Talking about—no, when the f*ck did I say that? Anyway, it’s really tacky and annoying and f*cking discredits a lot of the hard work that I’ve put in. It discredits a lot of the hard work that a lot of people have put in.”

She went on, to note how consumers can often struggle to see the difference between reality and art, arguing that there isn’t always an ulterior motive for what people create. Kanye West Accused By Another Lawyer Of Ghosting Him

Kanye West is unsurprisingly dealing with a million different things at once by only focusing on one at a time. Moreover, he’s probably thinking a lot about his Ty Dolla $ign collab album Vultures, which is supposed to drop tonight at press time… but you never know with Ye, do you? Regardless, the Chicago rapper stands accused of ignoring plenty of other action items, including responding to lawsuits on behalf of companies and entities that want to hold him accountable. The latest of these is from Scott Spivey, an attorney for Trax Records that asked a Louisiana judge to approve of other means of serving him with a lawsuit on Monday (December 11), according to court documents reportedly obtained by AllHipHop.

“The necessity for this motion arises from the fact that counsel for Ye has been notified. But [he] refuses to provide an address for his client,” the lawyer expressed in the legal filing. “Additionally, Defendant Ye is constantly traveling around the world, making conventional service of process impossible. This motion is crucial to uphold due process and ensure Defendant Ye is duly notified of the ongoing legal proceedings.” This lawsuit from Trax is over a Marshall Jefferson sample– the track “Move Your Body”– in Kanye West’s 2022 Donda 2 cut “Flowers” that was allegedly used without permission.

Kanye West At The Power 106 Powerhouse Show In 2016

Furthermore, Kanye West’s lawyer Greg Nelson claimed via email in June of this year that the California home that Spivey tried to serve him papers at in December of 2022 is no longer where he stays. When asked a month later in July whether he would accept the attorney’s service or indicate how to present the papers to the 46-year-old, Nelson allegedly said that his client is in Japan. He didn’t have an address for him and claimed to have no authorization to waive service. Therefore, Trax Records requested alternative service for “essentially… an international defendant” and await the judge’s decision.

“Considering the unique challenges presented by Defendant Ye’s circumstances, the following alternative service methods are proposed,” the motion read. “Service by Publication. Publish notice of the legal proceedings in reputable international newspapers. [Also,] online platforms that are likely to be accessed by Defendant Ye. Service by Mail. Send copies of the summons and complaint via international certified mail to any known addresses associated with Defendant Ye. Service through a Designated Agent. Utilize a legal representative as a designated agent to deliver the necessary documents to Defendant Ye. Each method has its advantages and potential drawbacks. But all are aimed at ensuring that Defendant Ye receives proper notice.” For more news and the latest updates on Kanye West, log back into HNHH.

What Brands Left Diddy’s Empower Global Marketplace After Cassie’s Sexual Assault Lawsuit?

18 brands have dropped partnerships with Sean “Diddy” Combs in the past month, after the music mogul’s ex-girlfriend, “Me & U” singer Cassie Ventura, filed a lawsuit against him alleging he’d abused her and raped her throughout their decade-long, off-and-on relationship, according to Rolling Stone. Diddy and Cassie settled the lawsuit less than 24 hours after the news broke, but since then, more lawsuits have emerged alleging similar misconduct, prompting Diddy — who denied all the allegations and called the later lawsuits “money grabs” through his attorneys — to step down from his leadership role at media company Revolt, which he’d co-founded in 2013.

Below, you can read more about which companies have ended their business partnerships with Diddy, mainly through their membership in his recently launched marketplace, Empower Global — a sort of Amazon for Black-owned companies.

Fulaba

Fulaba’s Haby Barry said she believed Cassie as well as the other accusers, so her jewelry brand “will not associate with anything or anyone that is counter to our values,” which are “all about empowering women and girls.”

House of Takura

A luxury bag company employing artisans in Africa with prints inspired by the local cultures, House of Takura was launched in 2015 by Sierra Leonan immigrant Annette Njau. She told Rolling Stone, “This decision was made on the day that Casandra Ventura filed her lawsuit. We take the allegations against Mr. Combs very seriously and find such behavior abhorrent and intolerable. We believe in victims’ rights, and support victims in speaking their truth, even against the most powerful of people.”

Nuudii System

Nuudii System was founded in 2011 by Annette Azan to offer shapewear that actually embraces womens’ natural shapes rather than change them. Azan also said that she pulled her brand from Empower upon finding out about the initial allegations.

No One Clothiers

Based in Los Angeles, this brand sells high-end shirts, pants, and hats designed to invoke the durability of workwear with the fashion-forward elements of streetwear. Its co-founder Lenard Grier said of the decision to leave Empower Global: “While this decision was difficult due [to] the reverence we once held for Mr. Combs as a leader in business and entertainment, it was clearly the correct choice. Our brand is founded on the belief that every individual is important and worthy of respect, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, etc. The allegations against Mr. Combs are in direct conflict with these beliefs. In turn, we felt a moral imperative to end our relationship.”

Tsuri

Ashli Goudelock founded her skin-care line with the intention of creating “spa-like experiences from the comfort of your home.” She credits her decision to break from Diddy an obligation “as women-owned and -led company,” saying, “we do not and will not linger in a gray area about the mistreatment of women.”

Quavo Wants To Be The Next Rapper To Take Up Playing The Flute

Last month, Andre 3000 surprised the hip-hop world. He returned with his long-awaited debut solo album New Blue Sun. But to the disappointment of some fans, there was no hip-hop whatsoever to be found on the project. When he announced the record he promised “no bars” and he delivered on that promise. The resulting album is a long instrumental album dabbling in ambient jazz and prominently featuring Andre playing the flute.

Andre 3000 has always been an influential rapper, particularly to those from Atlanta and that appears to still be the case. In a new video former Migos rapper Quavo shared to Instagram, he shows some interest of his own in playing the flute. In the clip, he’s in a market where he notices someone playing the flute and is particularly impressed by their performance. He says to somebody behind the camera that he wants a flute himself. That’s a far cry from expecting a new flute album from the rapper anytime soon. But it’s an early sign that he could be interested in expanding his musical horizons. Check out the full video below.

Buying a flute is hardly the only thing Quavo had done during his recent visit to Japan. Video made the rounds online of the rapper spotting a fan wearing a Takeoff shirt. When he pointed out how much he liked it the fan immediately took it off and gave it to him without much hesitation. He also took the time to hone in on some of his self-defense skills with a karate lesson.

Earlier this year, Quavo shared his new album Rocket Power. The project served as a tribute to his fellow former Migos rapper Takeoff, who was tragically murdered last year. The project even featured two posthumous verses from Takeoff. He appeared on the songs “Patty Cake” and “Back Where It Begins” which also featured Future. The album was led off by another Future collab, the hit song “Back Where It Begins.” What do you think of Quavo potentially learning how to play the flute after Andre 3000’s new album? Let us know in the comment section below.

Jay-Z & Meek Mill’s REFORM Alliance Gets Pennsylvania Probation Bill Passed

Jay-Z and Meek Mill’s REFORM Alliance recently scored a major win in Pennsylvania, bringing a probation reform bill before Governor Josh Shapiro. Senate Bill 838 intends to reduce recidivism, making the state’s probation rules easier to follow. Shapiro has reportedly promised to sign the bill. “It’s long past time to reform our system as a whole and put responsible limits on probation terms,” he explained. “You’ve passed that bill before. And I hope you’ll do it again. Put it on my desk and I’ll sign it.”

Senate Bill 838 is “an Act amending Title 42 (Judiciary and Judicial Procedure) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, in sentencing, further providing for order of probation, for conditions of probation and for modification or revocation of order of probation and providing for probation review conference.”

Meek Mill shared a statement about what the bill means to him in a press release, reflecting on his own time on probation. “My experience on probation reflected millions of other stories that go unheard,” he says. “So when the world saw my case and the absurdity of sending people to prison for non-criminal technical violations, it sparked a movement. It’s an honor and a blessing to see this change come to my home state. I am deeply grateful to the lawmakers and advocates for their hard work over many years to get this done. Thank you, truly.”

In 2020, Jay-Z and Meek Mill’s REFORM Alliance brought about a similar change in the state of California. “I want to thank Governor Newsom for his leadership in signing AB 1950, the most transformative probation bill in this country to date,” JAY-Z explained at the time. “This is a first step that I hope introduces a wave of much-needed change throughout the country.” What do you think of Jay-Z and Meek Mill’s REFORM Alliance bringing Senate Bill 838 before Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro? What about the bill itself? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Andre 3000 Thanks Frank Ocean For “Blessing” Post-Outkast Career, Among Others

Andre 3000 isn’t done breaking down the context, content, and general release of his new album, New Blue Sun. Moreover, he recently sat down on Questlove Supreme on Wednesday (December 13) with the legendary music figure and his co-hosts to speak on the project, his life, his career, and their experiences. One of many interesting tidbits happened when the Outkast legend spoke on what it was like to work with other artists after the duo released their last album (as of writing this article), Idlewild. While he doesn’t feel this way about hip-hop as much these days, it’s heartening to hear his gratitude and appreciation for people giving him the space to rap even as he wrapped up his run with Big Boi.

“A year after Idlewild at home, I was blessed to start getting asked to be on remixes,” Andre 3000 remarked. “And that was a blessing for me because it gave me a chance to rap. When I say a blessing, this is a town creating a new sound. DJ Unk actually came through another DJ friend of mine that know Unk, and Unk said, ‘Ask Andre if he’ll get on [the ‘Walk It Out’] beat.’ It was no big production; I don’t know if I got paid for the [remix].

“I think the trade-off was, ‘Hey Unk, can you do a couple beats that we scratched in the background of my cartoon for Class of 3000?’” Andre 3000 continued. “The beat was so jammin’ that you just wanted to get on it. So I say the blessing because any rapper just wanna be on a good beat and in the city. Or even later, like, new artists. Even if a Frank Ocean says, ‘Hey, get on my song’… Frank Ocean’s a new artist, I don’t know him. When I say a blessing, that introduced me to a whole other generation, too.

“I say blessing because we just came off Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and Idlewild,” he concluded. “Which was a musical, more focused, melodic kind of thing, so I didn’t rap a lot in those offerings. So I say a blessing because it gave me an opportunity to do what I enjoy doing.” For more news and the latest updates on Andre 3000, check back in with HNHH.

Fredo Bang Shoots Shot At Coi Leray In NSFW Fashion

Fredo Bang is someone who has never been shy to flaunt his feelings towards women on social media. If you check his likes on Twitter, you will be met with a lot of adult content. Overall, he has proven himself time and time again to be a pretty shameless individual. In fact, he has even showcased his interest in people such as Coi Leray and even Rubi Rose. These are two people known for posting thirst traps, which makes it no surprise that the artist engages with them, on the regular.

Recently, Coi Leray went viral thanks to a video in which she could be seen pole dancing. This is certainly some NSFW content in the minds of some. Although she isn’t nude or anything, many have been going off the deep end thanks to the clip. Well, when it comes to Fredo Bang, he opted to use the video as a means to shoot his shot at the rap star. In the tweet below, he wrote “if u needed a pole you could’ve just called me bby.” It is a pretty NSFW response and the insinuation is crystal clear.

It does not seem like Coi Leray has responded to the comment, and we doubt she actually will. Overall, that is probably not the type of message you want to respond to publically. After all, it is pretty graphic, and considering her fanbase is filled with pop fans, it just wouldn’t go over well. Either way, this has been a very interesting time for both artists. Fredo Bang continues to drop new music, and Leray is looking to capitalize on her newfound success from 2023. While they may be in different lanes, the internet has connected them forever, for better or worse.

Justine Skye Stands Up For Nicki Minaj Amid Online Backlash

Nicki Minaj is a controversial figure online for many reasons. She often leans into the drama and creates some of it on her own. But there’s still plenty of evidence that she gets more scrutiny than many of her contemporaries. That’s been heightened in the past week. Mostly because she’s re-entered the public eye in a major way following the release of Pink Friday 2. The album rode in on a massive wave of hype as her first new project in 5 years. She also spent much of this year teasing its release.

Now for a variety of reasons, some fans online aren’t happy with Nicki. Part of it is because of the various shots she takes at other female rappers across the album. Many noted when the tracklist was announced that while she works with some of the biggest men in rap today, none of her female contemporaries appear on the album. Part of that is likely because she takes some shots at other big names like Latto and Megan Thee Stallion on the album. Though she made sure to shut down any rumors of a potential beef with Doja Cat. But amid lots of fan discussion online about Nicki’s behavior and creative output, Justine Skye came to her defense. Read Skye’s full tweet below.

“Nicki has always been animated and theatrical in her own way, from day one,” Skye’s tweet begins. She explains that it was that very nature of her personality that helped turn her into the superstar she is today. Then she pivots to observations on the ways black women at large suffer in the music industry.

“I hate how comfortable and quick our community is to join together in negativity towards successful black women/men before lifting them up,” Skye continues. “Some of y’all are focused n the wrong thing and then wonder why the stereotypical path for black artist is when they blow up they “forget their people.” What do you think of Justine Skye’s statement in defense of Nicki Minaj? Flau’jae Johnson Opens For Rod Wave

LSU sophomore Flau’jae Johnson took some time away from Baton Rouge to perform at a Rod Wave concert in Atlanta. Johnson performed a few of the tracks she has released in recent years, including her best-known hit, “Big 4”. Previously, Johnson has performed at a LeBron James party as well as LSU’s national championship celebration back in April.

However, her music has also proven controversial at times. On May 9, LSU guard and rapper Flau’jae Johnson dropped a remix of Latto’s “Put It On Da Floor”. In putting her own style on the track, Johnson included the lyric “In this 911, blowing smoke like them towers.” The song quickly went viral for all the wrong reasons, with right-wing outlets such as Fox and Outkick very angry at Johnson for “mocking” 9/11. However, Johnson later issued an apology. “I just want to come on here and let ya’ll know by no means would I ever intentionally try to disrespect or offend anyone. My whole goal in music is to push positivity and spread love. So, in no way shape or form would I ever intentionally try to disrespect or offend anyone,” Johnson wrote on Instagram.

Flau’jae Johnson Enjoys Sophomore Improvements

On the court, Johnson is showing why she was named SEC Freshman of the Year last season. While she is no longer an instant starter, she is playing more minutes and has seen an increase in almost every statistical category. While she’s only played less than a third of the games she did last year, it’s clear that Johnson has taken all of the right lessons from Kim Mulkey’s coaching.

LSU are 10-1, having gone undefeated since the shock loss in their season opener. However, much like last year, the Tigers have faced criticism for their non-conference schedule. An 89-point margin of victory of McNeese highlights that LSU isn’t playing the highest quality opponents. They’ve played just two ranked matchups in Colorado and Virginia Tech. By comparison, the SEC-leading South Carolina, who is also No. 1 in the country, has played four top-25 opponents already this season.
