Bill Simmons, founder of The Ringer and current high-ranking executive at Spotify, is currently beefing with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The veteran journalist’s ire stems from a recent decision by Spotify to prematurely end the company’s podcasting contract with the royal couple. Reportedly, Harry and Meagan produced just 12 episodes over two years despite being on a $20 million contract. Furthermore, additional reporting revealed that Spotify would not be paying out the full $20 million to the couple.

On his own podcast, Simmons went hard on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “I wish I’d been involved in the Meghan and Harry leave Spotify negotiation,” Simmons said. “The f*cking grifters. That’s the podcast that we should’ve launched with them.” Simmons also compared Harry and Meghan to the Obamas. Spotify saw a major return on investment with the former POTUS and FLOTUS, whose podcasting contract expired last year. Now Stephen A. Smith, who formerly worked with Simmons at ESPN, is entering the story.

Previously, the audio company and industry professionals ridiculed the estranged royal family members for not producing enough content to satisfy the $20 million agreement. (Hence why Spotify decided not to renew the contract.) Now there’s talk that Meghan didn’t even interview many of her podcast guests. Originally reported by Podnews, many sources claim her staffers conducted the actual interviews. Meghan then dubbed her voice asking the questions into the dialogue.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex launched Archewell Audio — a reference to their son’s name, Archie — in 2022, where Meghan’s podcast Archetypes lived. During its brief, unfortunate run, it only reached 12 episodes. Spotify executives, like The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, expected the duo to provide much more content than what it ultimately came up with. In fact, Mr. Simmons is on record on his own podcast calling Harry and Meghan, “f*cking grifters.” For context, Bill Simmons produces two to three podcast episodes weekly for The Bill Simmons Podcast, as well as one to two guest appearances on other podcasts. In other words, there’s no excuse for Harry and Meghan’s lack of production.

Prince Harry And Meghan Markle “Demand” Footage Of Nearly-Fatal Car Chase

After a nearly-fatal incident earlier this week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s legal team have demanded the footage captured by paparazzi during the “chase.” Their legal team sent a letter to the photo agency involved, Backgrid, reading, “We hereby demand that Backgrid immediately provide us with copies of all photos, videos, and/or films taken last night by the freelance photographers after the couple left their event and over the next several hours.” Backgrid claims they “had no intention of causing any distress or harm, as their only tool was their cameras.”

Backgrid refuses to hand over the footage. Their lawyer said, “In America, as I’m sure you know, property belongs to the owner of it.” They also say, Third parties cannot just demand it be given to them, as perhaps Kings can do.” Also adding, “you should sit down with your client and advise them that his English rules of royal prerogative to demand that the citizenry hand over their property to the Crown were rejected by this country long ago. We stand by our founding fathers.”

Photo Agency Refuses To Hand Over Footage

The pair were on their way back from a ceremony where Markle accepted an award when the incident occurred. Harry and Markle were followed “relentlessly” by paparazzi, with their SUV reportedly going up to 80 mph to escape them. A spokesperson for the couple shared about the incident. They said, “This relentless pursuit, lasting over 2 hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road.” Including, “pedestrians and 2 NYPD officers.”

The couple also dealt with another incident this week, when an alleged stalker was detained on their property. Their security team called police at 2 a.m., when Kevin Garcia Valdovinos was spotted near the entrance to their home. The security team then detained Valdovinos until police arrived, and he was later also arrested for misdemeanor stalking. He was released that morning on $2,500 bail. Valdovinos’ charge also led to speculation that this wasn’t the first time he had done something like this. The couple was unharmed, and it is unconfirmed whether or not they were home at the time of the incident.

An alleged stalker was taken into custody at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Montecito home early Monday morning. According to reports, the pair’s security team called Santa Barbara County police to report a man near their property. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office told TMZ that the call took place at 2 a.m. Harry and Meghan’s security team placed Kevin Garcia Valdovinos under citizen’s arrest at the entrance to their property, where police later took him into custody. He was arrested for misdemeanor stalking. The 29-year-old man was released later that morning on $2,500 bail. It’s unclear whether or not the pair was home at the time of the incident. The reasoning behind the man’s arrest has led to speculation that this wasn’t the first time he had tried to get close to the couple.

In March, comedian Chris Rock called Markle out in his stand-up special Selective Outrage. In the special, Rock said “Like who is this girl Meghan Markle? Seems like a nice lady, just complaining.” He went on to say, “Like didn’t she hit the light-skinned lottery?” The comedian also commented on an interview Markle did with Oprah in 2022.

Meghan Markle’s longtime friend, Janina Gavankar, was reportedly in attendance at the live taping of Chris Rock’s new Netflix special, Selective Outrage, over the weekend.
