Matty Healy fired back at Azealia Banks on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday afternoon after she criticized Charli XCX’s performance on Saturday Night Live. Reacting to a clip of Charli performing her hit Brat single, “360,” Banks accused her of making a “lazy” interpolation of Ciara’s “1, 2 Step.” Healy’s 1975 bandmate, George Daniel, is currently engaged to Charli.
“I legit just a caught how this song a lazy artist studio interpolation of Ciara’s 1,2 step. First off, nobody even know or cares about aj cook enough her to be riding Ciara’s ‘This beat is Outrageous, so contagious, make you crave it Jazze made it (Ha!),’” Banks wrote. “… I guess brat is when nobody has to tell u ur trash because u already know ur trash. This actually gets worse and worse.” In response to the post, Healy wrote back: “Shut up you f*cking prat,” with a laughing emoji. “Being more annoying than me is actually impressive.”
Charli XCX Poses With The 1975 At The GQ Men Of The Year Awards
It’s not the first time Healy and Banks have traded shots on social media. Last year, the “212” hitmaker called Healy out after his viral comments about Ice Spice. “Does Matty Healy know that no one actually thinks The 1975 makes good music?” she asked her followers on Instagram at the time. “And that he’s a lame poser with a trash cliche band name that actually means nothing. He’s clearly so pressed about a Black girl who knows nothing about him or his music is making more moves and money than him.”

Being more annoying than me is actually impressive
Azealia Banks was not a fan of Charli XCX’s dual role as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. “I legit just a caught how this song a lazy artist studio interpolation of Ciara’s 1,2 step,” Banks wrote on X (formerly Twitter) about her performance of “360.” After accusing Charli of having “flow just without the swag,” she continued, “I guess brat is when nobody has to tell u ur trash because u already know ur trash. This actually gets worse and worse.”
The “rantings of a lunatic” (as Banks describes herself) caught the attention of Matty Healy, whose 1975 bandmate, George Daniel, is engaged to Charli. “Shut up you f*cking prat,” he wrote in response. In a follow-up tweet, Healy added, “Being more annoying than me is actually impressive.”
This isn’t the first time Banks and Healy have sparred. She called him a “full incel” while he was rumored to be dating Taylor Swift. “Taylor, this guy is gonna give you scabies. He’s not on the level of powerful p*ss you worked hella hard to build. Ugh, so many much cooler people in music to work with,” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “You cannot be letting him climb the rich white coochie mountain, sis.” In a separate incident, Banks also advised Healy to eat “a strong green salad” and “wash [his] d*ck.”
During Open’er Festival, fans grew concerned about Ice Spice’s wellbeing after she seemed disassociated onstage. Today (July 7) the recording artist came face-to-face with a sea of trolls at Rolling Loud Europe. As Ice Spice performed “Karma (Remix),” her collaboration with Taylor Swift, the Austrian audience began to boo.
Initial, Ice Spice seemed confused by the reaction (especially considering Swift’s global reach). But, shortly after the audience flashed a few thumbs down motions toward her, Ice Spice responded by blowing a kiss.
Taylor Swift and Ice Spice’s friendship has continued to blossom since their song. They were even spotted together at Super Bowl 2024. Based on Ice Spice’s defense of Swift, they will remain strong.

The incident she’s referring to took place in spring this year, when Healy appeared on The Adam Friedland Show. Healy mentioned Ice Spice, which prompted the show’s hosts to guess at her ethnicity, all while using derogatory and stereotypical accents for Chinese, Hawaiian, and Inuit people. While Healy himself didn’t participate, he also didn’t push back; in response, fans criticized him heavily on social media (although, to be fair, a lot of that appeared to be driven by protective Taylor Swift fans who just didn’t seem to think he was “good enough” for her).
“When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused,” she said. “Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or some sh*t like that, and I’m like, ‘Huh? What does that even mean?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What? But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care. But that’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.”
Here’s a prime example of why maybe everyone should consider chilling out a little bit. It’s understandable to be invested in our favorite entertainers to a point, but getting all offended on their behalves when they rarely even notice the stuff we expend so much energy on can’t be healthy. Besides, if Ice Spice is too busy doing deals with Dunkin’, working on her debut album, and collaborating with Healy’s ex Taylor Swift, maybe we could all learn from her example and mind the business that actually keeps us paid.
Lead singer of pop rock band The 1975 Matty Healy has found himself crossing paths with plenty of high-profile musicians this year. Most notably, the singer spent a few weeks as Taylor Swift’s speculated boyfriend. Many Swifties reacted negatively to the news citing various controversial statements Healy has made in the past. He also crossed paths with Azealia Banks and found himself being called out by pop singer Rina Sawayama. But one of the controversies that has stuck the most are strange comments he made about Ice Spice on a podcast.
Healy appeared on The Adam Friedland Show where he told a story about trying to reach Ice Spice through Instagram DMs. That spun into a tirade where the podcast hosts play offensive guessing games about the rapper’s ethnicity. While Healy doesn’t exactly participate directly he clearly finds the spectacle funny. Apparently, Matty felt the need to apologize as Spice was asked about it in a recent interview and she revealed what he said.
“When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused. Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or some sh-t like that, and I’m like, ‘Huh? What does that even mean?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? Ice Spice explains to Variety. She also revealed that she eventually received an apology from the singer. “But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care.”
Spice also explained that she caught up with Matty recently and the pair have made up. “But that’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.” In the full interview she discusses a number of other artists and controversies she’s been a part of. Rina Sawayama slammed Matty Healy on stage at Glastonbury 2023, over the weekend, to introduce her song, “STFU.” The swipe comes after The 1975 singer recently dealt with a racism controversy regarding an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show podcast. Sawayama, without mentioning Healy by name, also remarked about him consuming “ghetto gaggers” porn.
“I wrote this because I was sick & tired of these micro-aggressions,” Sawayama said on stage. “This goes out to a white man that watches Ghetto Gaggers & mocks Asian people on a podcast. He also owns my masters! I’ve had enough!”
As for Healy’s comments, he, as well as comedians Adam Friedland and Nick Mullen referred to Ice Spice as a “chubby Chinese lady.” They also described her as “Inuit”, “Chinese”, and “Hawaiian.” After plenty of backlash, Healy finally apologized while onstage with The 1975 in Auckland, New Zealand. “I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of a bit sorry if I’ve offended you. Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry,” he said at the time.
He continued: “I don’t want anything like that misconstrued to be mean. I’m not… I hate… I don’t mind being a bit of a joker. […] It’s OK for me to be, like, a trickster or whatever, but I don’t want to be perceived as, like, being barmy. Because honestly, I just love you guys, and I love doing this. […] The truth I just want to say, ‘Hello. This is a bit embarrassing. I’m sorry if I get it wrong. We all get it wrong,’ you know? I just have to do it in public and then apologize to Ice Spice. My life’s just a bit weird. I am genuinely sorry if I’ve upset her because I f*cking love her.”
Rina Sawayama Slams Matty Healy
Healy was formerly a director at Dirty Hit, the label to which Sawayama is signed. Outside of music, Rina Sawayama is also known for her recent appearance in John Wick: Chapter 4. She played the character, Akira, in the film.
New Azealia Banks beef just dropped. This time around, the “212” hitmaker is taking issue with British indie rocker Matty Healy, who’s been the subject of scrutiny over the past few weeks after making troubling comments about Ice Spice on a podcast. He offered up an awkward apology to the New Yorker last month, but during a more recent interview, made it abundantly clear that he feels little to no remorse for his actions. “It doesn’t actually matter,” he said of the controversy, causing more backlash to fly his way.
Among those lashing out at the “Girls” hitmaker is Banks, who used her Instagram Story to call him out in a lengthy rant on Tuesday (May 30). “Does Matty Healy know that no one actually thinks The 1975 makes good music?” she asked her followers. “And that he’s a lame poser with a trash cliche band name that actually means nothing. He’s clearly so pressed about a Black girl who knows nothing about him or his music is making more moves and money than him,” the embattled rap diva wrote. “Does he know that Black women are more coveted [in] today’s industry because there’s BIG BUSINESS in female rap?”
“He is so obviously weak in the knees, thin-jawed, and drug addicted that it’s easy to catch his crusty ass lackin’,” Banks further alleged. In her next paragraph, she trashed The 1975’s name and image entirely. “You’re not a star, nor are you good at whatever this crappy ass mid-2000’s indie pitchfork darling fantasy you’re trying to see,” the 31-year-old dissed Healy.
“Ice Spice has MILES more originality than you will ever. The 1975 is on nobody’s radar babe, maybe fat emo teenagers but no we are not checkin’ for you boo.” On the next slides, the Harlem native claimed that the English artist is “one shared needle away from tetanus.” Afterward, she advised his rumoured new girlfriend, Taylor Swift, to avoid the “full incel” at all costs.

Matty Healy is comfortably resting in his villain era, stirring up beef with Noel Gallagher. His rumored romance with Taylor Swift isn’t helping much. Lewis Capaldi poked fun at the discourse with a parody video, but Azealia Banks’ approach isn’t as light-hearted.
In a note uploaded to the entertainer’s Instagram Story, Banks wrote, “Taylor, this guy is gonna give you scabies. He’s not on the level of powerful p*ss you worked hella hard to build. Ugh, so many much cooler people in music to work with.” Later in the post, she added, “Ugh, this dude is a full incel. You cannot be letting him climb the rich white c*ochie mountain, sis.”
As a suggestion, the rapper did offer another potential boo. “You should really tap James Mercer from The Shins,” said Banks, adding, “James Mercer is honestly one of the best lyricists ever. Yesss, Taylor Swift with ‘Black Wave’ and ‘Australia’ by The Shins vibes is the tea, sis.”
Azealia Banks comments on Taylor Swift and Matty Healy’s rumored relationship:

Neither Swift nor Healy confirmed or denied their relationship status. But during BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival in Dundee, Scotland, The 1975 leader brushed off the whispers saying, “Is it all a bit? Is it sincere? Will he ever address it? All of these questions and more will be ignored in the next hour. Ladies and gentlemen, this is The 1975.”
As Stereogum notes, during a controversial February episode of The Adam Friedland Show, “Healy mentioned Ice Spice, whom he said he tried to DM on Instagram. The group then tried to guess at the rapper’s heritage by referring to her as Hawaiian, Inuit, and Chinese, while mocking those accents.” The publication later noted, “Healy didn’t participate in those mocking accents, but he laughed along with the podcast hosts.”
Fast-forward to today, when Healy addressed the situation on stage. He said:
“I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of a bit sorry if I’ve offended you. Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.
