During an X (formerly Twitter) Space, Lupe Fiasco decided to share his thoughts on who can assume the role of gatekeeper to hip-hop culture. Many users took his statement to be a subtle jab at Kendrick Lamar. Read his remarks below.

If you want to start who is in and who is out, a process which I don’t agree with, and I think is bullsh*t, if you want to do that you should have a degree. You should have a PhD in hip-hop. If you ain’t got that, then I don’t think that you are qualified to and have the right to speak on of hip-hop. Just because you can rap, and you’ve sold a bunch of records, I don’t think at this point, and it’s to the point now that it is visceral, and it’s to the point where people are making decisions on it, and it’s hurting people and building up other people that it shouldn’t just be based on some n**** at a podcast… It should be stewarded by people who know what the f*ck they are talking about very very deeply and can write a book about it. But I’m being biased. I don’t agree with the process anyway. I don’t think we should be choosing who comes in and out and making decisions on that sh*t anyway… I think it is going to do more harm than good. And I think you are going to miss out on a lot of beautiful things because of it. I think you are going to ostracize people and like I said, there are going to be a group of motherf*ckers that you think you actually control and sh*t and its dudes doing 50 city tours who you ain’t never heard of. ‘Cause they like, ‘F*ck that dude. I’m finna do this because I love it.’ But now, they are the ‘out group,’ but they are selling more records than you and selling more tour dates than you. But you are the spokesperson for hip-hop? That don’t make no sense.

Lupe Fiasco Wants To Reboot CRS Supergroup Without Original Members

Child Rebel Soldier is a lost relic of the 2000s. The name was applied to a supergroup that only worked on two songs. The thing is, the members of the supergroup were so famous that fans continue to ponder what a full album could have sounded like. Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Pharrell was a dream lineup for any hip-hop fan, but their different career paths made the prospective album an impossibility. Lupe Fiasco wants to reboot CRS for modern times, but his vision may not be what fans had in mind.

In short, Lupe Fiasco wants to transform the supergroup into a solo venture. He recently talked about Child Rebel Soldier during an interview with Stereogum, and delved into the brand’s potential. He even provided a time table on when fans can expect new CRS music. “I’m gonna reboot CRS in the next six months, maybe next year,” Fiasco stated. “Tyler, [The Creator] has one of the CRS records. But it’s gonna go back to the original energy, which was me rapping over Radiohead beats.” The concept of “original energy” was enlightening for readers, as the rapper detailed how CRS first started.

Evidently, Lupe Fiasco wanted to rap about the dark side of fame, and Kanye West and Pharrell were so intrigued by the concept they offered the Chicago rapper beats. It snowballed into songs in which all 3 artists rhymed. “Us (Placers)” and “Everybody Noze (Remix)” are the only official CRS releases in which this happened. Fiasco has had a bit of a renaissance in recent years, however, so dusting off one of his biggest “what if” projects makes sense. The rapper’s love for Radiohead is what initially sparked his desire to rhyme about darker subject matter. He conceded, though, that a full-fledged collab with the British band would be difficult.

Instead, Lupe Fiasco wants to turn Child Rebel Soldier into a solo album driven by Radiohead samples. “I’ll just go back to that original [vibe],” he told the outlet. “Just go back and find those dope loops and samples from Radiohead or their solo records. Loop the sh*t up, and make little beats out of it, and crush with some dope ass lyrics.” Fiasco has done just that on fan favorite songs like “The National Anthem” and “Animal Pharm,” so there’s no reason to think he can’t do it now. That said, fans will never get a chance to hear what a three-man CRS album would have sounded like.

Lupe Fiasco Proves Lyrically Sharp As Ever On New Album “Samurai”

Lupe Fiasco knows how to rap. An understatement, perhaps. Lupe knows how to rap better than most people walking the planet. He has the rare ability to make rhymes sound both intricate and cool at the same time, if you’ll pardon the pun. He’s also managed to put out some of his best work in the second half of his career. Fans worrying about Food & Liquor being his only classic have been put at ease by what he’s dropped over the last eight years. Samurai continues his hot streak.

The album draws obvious comparisons between the titular Japanese warrior and the proficiency of Lupe as a rapper. That’s where the obviousness of this album comes to a halt. The Chicago icon spends thirty minutes rattling off dense bars and intricate stories over jazzy production. Samurai is only eight songs, but there’s nothing about this offering that feels rushed or incomplete. Lupe Fiasco is such a confident and measured storyteller, at this point, that he seemingly can’t miss. Those seeking radio hits like “Kick, Push” or “Superstar” will be disappointed, but Lupe is at a different point in his career. He’s focusing on skill, and making whole albums out of stellar deep cuts. Samurai won’t convert non-Lupe believers, but it will serve as a reminder of his greatness to fans. “Mumble Rap” and “Til Eternity,” in particular.

The rapper famously had a rough patch in his career in the 2010s, but he’s really regained his footing and reclaimed his reputation as one of the best rappers walking the planet. Fiasco has been teasing his upcoming album SAMURAI online, and the title track proved that he was going to take full advantage of the metaphor of him being a lyrical master. The wordplay was dense and the production was tasteful. The trend thankfully continues with this new track, “CAKE.”

Lupe Fiasco wisely reunites with producer Soundtrakk, who is responsible for absolute classic Lu singles like “Superstar” and “Kick, Push.” The new song lacks the catchy chorus of those singles, but the verses are absolutely staggering. The Chicago rapper doesn’t waste any time, and immediately launches into a multi-syllable rhyme scheme that parallels, among other things, the death of singer Janis Joplin with the apocalypse. It makes sense in context, but the wordplay is so dense that it helps to actually pull up the lyrics and read along. The important distinction between current Lu and dark age Lu, though, is that it sounds good. Regardless of what goes over the listener’s head, “CAKE” is another jazzy boom bap standout that has us excited for SAMURAI.

A master of his craft, Lupe Fiasco wields his pen with the discipline of a swordsman, striking with deliberate strokes meant to knock off-balance as often as they draw blood. Today, Lupe Fiasco sharpens his focus in anticipation of the release of Samurai, his ninth studio album. The upcoming album is produced in full by Soundtrakk, making it their second full album collaboration following 2022’s DRILL MUSIC IN ZION, and the first album that Lupe and Soundtrakk worked on with their longtime manager, and 1st & 15th co-CEO Charley “Chill” Patton, since 2007’s The Cool.

“I sometimes get tagged by my fans as not doing personal records” Lupe says,“but I always tell people there’s me in there if you listen closely enough. This album is one of my more personal records to date. It’s not a full biography, but my personal experiences are tied up in all of my music. A lot of the records are me. Some are from the POV of a character. and some are me. The album weaves things from my life as an artist, touching on things other artists go through.”

On the upcoming album, the veteran rapper retreats inward, to give fans one of the most personal albums in his discography. Samurai follows a loose narrative, tracking the career progression a rapper through the battle rap circuit, focusing on the small moments that make up the rapper’s career and drawing parallels between the battlers of today and the warriors of old. Musically, the new album finds Lupe delighting in the simple pleasures of assembling assonant syllables into playful and poignant narratives. The 8-track album is smooth, yet cerebral, brimming with ideas, but always radiating Lupes pure love for the art of emceeing and committing himself as a servant of the rap game. Now available to pre-save and pre-order on vinyl, Samurai arrives in both physical and digital formats on June 28th via 1st & 15th.

“The word ‘samurai’ means to serve,” says Lupe. “My relationship to that word has always meant that you need to be at the service of other people, either in the overall community, or in this instance, the rap community at large that I’ve been a part of for years.”

Along with the announcement of the album, Lupe shares the album’s title track, “Samurai”. A loose and soulful record, “Samurai” gently lopes along with a prominent drumbeat and a lilting soprano sax lick, as Lupe dons his battle rap persona, attempting to draw a crowd with his poetic devices. While the chorus imitates a busker or carnival barker’s call for attention, the verses dig deeper. The first verse analyzes the awkward relationship between hip-hop culture and high culture with deft internal rhyme: “Big eyes lookin like skies in binoculars/Two nights live, singin’ by the opera house, but not in it/Just by it, somewhat alongside it/A long silence,” he opens. The second verse tells the story of a struggling artist, contrasting her glamorous dreams with her gritty reality, but brimming with her unbroken spirit. Lupe Fiasco Announces His New Album, ‘Samurai,’ With A Video For Mellow Title Track

It’s a big week for Black nerds. Ubisoft announced the next game in its long-running Assassin’s Creed series, Shadows, will feature the Black samurai Yasuke as a playable protagonist (we love Yasuke), and now, Lupe Fiasco has announced his return with the fittingly titled album, Samurai, coming June 28th via his own label, 1st And 15th. All we need now is a Ghost Dog sequel, and we’ve got the trifecta.

The first single is the title song, and comes with a simple music video well-suited to the subject, which finds Lupe posted up in various locations around his city that nod to the art and architecture of Imperial Japan. He also rocks a sweatshirt emblazoned with the word “Ishigawa,” which is Japanese for Westside (*pushes glasses up nose with one finger*), a clever reference to his hometown, with a neat tie-in to the Japanese themes.

Lupe last blessed fans with a full project in 2022 with the critically hailed Drill Music In Zion. The album title had a deep meaning for the Chicago rapper, and Samurai is no different; Lupe has long been known to be a big fan of Japanese culture, practicing the martial art iaido and incorporating references to Japanese fashion and anime into his lyrics, way before such things were considered “cool” to do.
