Pharrell Williams Pens Inspiring “Piece By Piece” For Upcoming LEGO Animated Biopic

Pretty soon, we are going to learn more about the mastermind that is Pharell Williams. According to Rolling Stone, his LEGO animated biopic, Piece By Piece, will be in theaters by October 11 with Focus Features being the distributor. The trailer for the film was released back in June and it will depict the life and influential career of the Virginia Beach, Virginia native. Adding some extra excitement to the movie is the inclusion of multiple hip-hop icons and their LEGO avatars. Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, JAY-Z, and more will all have roles in what should be an interesting watch. With the multi-hyphenate being behind a project like this, an original soundtrack was almost a sure thing. That’s why it’s no surprise that Pharrell Williams has dropped the first/self-titled single for it today, “Piece By Piece”.

The veteran is no stranger to writing catchy and kid-friendly compositions for films and there might not be anyone better, at least in hip-hop. “Piece By Piece” is a record that encourages people to embrace the journey instead of sprinting to the finish line. Pharrell has certainly paid his dues in the music industry, so this track should fit right at home with his film’s potential overarching messages. Piece By Piece has been viewed at by movie critics already at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, and so far, it’s gotten mixed reviews. However, things could change once it gets a wider screening.

Pharrell’s LEGO Movie ‘Piece By Piece’ Has A Vibrant New Poster Full Of Easter Eggs

In January, Focus Features announced Piece By Piece, “an unparalleled motion picture experience that captures the magic and brilliance of Pharrell Williams’ creative genius, one LEGO brick at a time.” The movie was directed by Morgan Neville, who won an Oscar for 20 Feet From Stardom, and Focus Features released the official trailer in June.

On Thursday, August 29, Pharrell posted a vibrant Piece By Piece poster packed with LEGO Minifigures. LEGO Kendrick Lamar wears his Crown Of Thorns. In LEGO, Daft Punk are no longer retired. LEGO Gwen Stefani resumes her No Doubt form. LEGO N.O.R.E. tips his “N.O.R.E.” cap.

The previously released trailer revealed that the movie will feature cameos by LEGO versions of Morgan Neville, Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg. Of course, Pharrell also took a break from scoring the Despicable Me franchise to provide new music for his own movie.

“Five years ago, Pharrell Williams approached me with the idea of helping him tell his story through LEGO animation,” Neville said in a statement provided in the original January announcement. “It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on. I’m grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission. We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Pharrell added, “When I had this crazy vision to tell this story through LEGO bricks, I couldn’t have imagined a better partner than Morgan. He is a legend. Grateful that Focus wanted to collaborate with us, and I’m honored to share this with the world and bring people into my universe. Building with LEGO bricks encourages us to follow our imagination… who would’ve thought that playing with these toys as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life? It’s proof that anyone else can do it, too.”

Piece By Piece is exclusively in theaters on October 11. Find more information here.

2,800 Boxes Of Lego Seized In California Theft Ring Bust: What We Know

In a dramatic bust, California authorities have uncovered a massive organized retail theft operation involving thousands of dollars’ worth of LEGO toys, KTLA reports. Two individuals, Richard Siegel, 71, and Blanca Gudino, 39, were arrested in connection with the LEGO thefts. The investigation was initiated in December 2023 after a series of thefts at a Target store in San Pedro. Loss prevention workers identified Gudino as the suspect, and subsequent surveillance led to a significant discovery at Siegel’s residence in Long Beach. However, the Los Angeles Police Department is continuing its investigation into the theft ring, which highlights the growing issue of organized retail theft in the region.

The Investigation Unfolds

The case began to unravel in December 2023 when detectives were alerted to a series of thefts at a Target store on North Gaffey Street in San Pedro. Loss prevention workers at the store identified Blanca Gudino as the primary suspect involved in the thefts. By June 4, 2024, police had tracked Gudino’s activities, witnessing her allegedly stealing LEGO products from Target stores in Torrance and Lakewood. The investigation revealed that she would then deliver the stolen merchandise to Richard Siegel’s home in Long Beach.

The Bust

On June 5, 2024, police executed a search warrant at Siegel’s residence. There, they discovered over 2,800 boxes of stolen LEGO sets. Moreover, photographs from the scene showed rows upon rows of LEGO boxes neatly stored on shelves. The living room almost looked like a warehouse-like space. The cache included collector’s items and high-value sets, with individual retail values ranging from $20 to over $1,000. Among the stolen items were coveted sets from popular themes such as Star Wars, Ninjago, Harry Potter, Technic, LEGO Architecture, Marvel, Minecraft, and various special pop-culture editions. Furthermore, pne notable item was a demo set housed in plexiglass, typically used for store displays.

The Operation

While searching Siegel’s home, officers noticed potential buyers arriving, attracted by online advertisements posted by Siegel. This activity suggested that Siegel had been running an operation to sell the stolen LEGO sets. The suspects were subsequently arrested: Siegel on charges of organized retail theft, and Gudino for grand theft. The LAPD has stated that the incidents are still under investigation. They are currently working to determine the full extent of the theft ring and its operations.

Broader Implications

This bust is not an isolated incident. It follows a series of similar thefts targeting Bricks & Minifigs stores throughout Southern California. In these cases, thieves smashed their way into multiple stores, escaping with approximately $100,000 worth of LEGO products. The recent arrests and discoveries underscore a troubling trend in organized retail theft. There’s certainly significant implications for retailers and law enforcement agencies alike.

The LAPD’s investigation into the theft ring is ongoing. As authorities piece together the details of the operation, the case highlights the sophisticated methods employed by organized retail theft rings. Retailers are urged to increase vigilance and enhance security measures to combat such thefts. Meanwhile, the public is reminded of the importance of reporting suspicious activities to help law enforcement efforts.

The seizure of over 3,000 boxes of LEGO sets in California marks a significant victory against organized retail theft, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the challenges retailers face in protecting their inventory from increasingly bold and organized criminals.

Pharrell Williams Tells His Story With Lego In ‘Piece By Piece,’ The Most Unique Biopic Ever

Leave it to Pharrell to find the cure to the musical biopic overload Hollywood is currently suffering from. Today, the pioneering producer shared the first trailer for Piece By Piece, his biographical movie that is one part traditional biopic, one part documentary, and one part animated Lego adventure.

Wait, what?

Yep, you read that right. Look, there’s just no way the man who fronted The Neptunes and N.E.R.D., who made “Happy” and “Get Lucky,” and who can’t be stopped from wearing those big-ass hats would ever just hire some good-looking actor to recreate his come-up. Instead, Piece By Piece is a colorful, animated feature directed by Morgan Neville in which Pharrell is rendered as a minifigure whose imagination blurs the lines of reality — along with a cast that includes some of the biggest names in music, from Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg to Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar. I’m buying a ticket just to see Lego Jay-Z give his signature chuckle. (Lego, if you’re reading this… You know what to do. We NEED IT.)

The release of the trailer reverses a string of … well, awkward headlines for the musical genius. Up ’til now, he’s seen a string of legal actions filed against him by collaborators including his Neptunes partner Chad Hugo and singer Pink to block him from copyrighting certain brand names and capitalizing from his work with them.

On the bright side, his work at Louis Vuitton — particularly a recent collab with Tyler The Creator — has been well received and he’s got a fun single with Miley Cyrus called “Doctor (Work It Out).” You can watch the Piece by Piece trailer above.

Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z & More Appear As Their LEGO Renditions In Pharrell’s Upcoming Movie

Pharrell’s upcoming LEGO-created biopic Piece By Piece lands in theaters later this fall, and we just got our first trailer for the creative’s film. Moreover, the teaser showcases some mini-figure renditions of some of your favorite rappers, including Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and many more. Of course, people are reacting quite curiously to these versions, particularly K.Dot’s rendition since it doesn’t overtly look like him that much. But there’s only so far you can go with trying to make a real person seem like themselves in LEGO form. Maybe we should be giving more due credit here instead of expecting Bionicle levels of detail.

Jokes aside, this is looking like a really interesting, ingenious, and fun-loving film centered around Pharrell’s life and career, one of a couple of movies he’s got reportedly slated on the release block. That other project doesn’t have a title yet, though, and it’s also about his childhood in Virginia Beach. We’re not so sure on why the accomplished musician is putting out what seems like multiple biopics around the similar time, but he’s definitely worthy of documentation. After all, Piece By Piece‘s celebrity roster alone should speak to his reach, influence, talent, and level of earned respect in the game.

Piece By Piece Trailer: Watch

Elsewhere, many folks also found this notable thanks to the context offered by 2024’s biggest event so far: the rap beef. Kendrick Lamar and frequent Pharrell hater Drake recently had a great showdown, and one that had folks looking at the Neptunes producer and the Compton lyricist’s relationship a little differently. This is because studio footage of the two now carries a more overt anti-Drizzy tone. That’s just speculation and confirmation bias at play, but it’s still an interesting reevaluation.

Your Favorite Rappers (Plus Justin Timberlake) As LEGO Mini-Figures In Pharrell’s Upcoming Movie

Meanwhile, Pharrell’s got some more heat in store for the year, including a teased collaboration with NAV. With Piece By Piece and other exciting new moves on the way, maybe another biopic-style film wouldn’t be that unnecessary at all. Hopefully none of these endeavors stifle his versatile work ethic, though, After all, when you’ve got so much to handle in the fashion and business realms too, music and movies can be an easy distraction.

New Lego Movie Based on Pharrell Williams’s Life From Focus Features Set To Hit Theaters

New Lego Movie Based on Pharrell Williams's Life From Focus Features Set To Hit Theaters

The next LEGO movie is thinking outside the box. Piece By Piece is coming to theaters and will be inspired by Pharrell Williams’s life. Sounds interesting …

The film is a Focus Features piece, no pun intended, and will be helmed by Director Morgan Neville, an Academy Award winner. Neville and Caitrin Rogers produce the new animated LEGO installment via Tremolo Productions. Williams, Mimi Valdés, and Shani Saxon are producing under Williams’ i am OTHER banner alongside LEGO Group’s Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone, executive producing Piece By Piece. Expect the film to feel like a biopic, albeit through the LEGO art form.

Focus Features say the film is described as “Pharrell set out to tell his story in a way that would set audience’s imaginations free. Developed from his singular vision, PIECE BY PIECE defies genres and expectations to transport audiences into a LEGO world where anything is possible.”

This is a long time coming as Neville said Williams pitched his story as a LEGO film five years ago. “It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on,” he said. “I’m so grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission. We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Williams said, “When I had this crazy vision to tell this story through LEGO bricks, I couldn’t have imagined a better partner than Morgan. He is a legend. Grateful that Focus wanted to collaborate with us and I’m honored to share this with the world and bring people into my universe. Building with LEGO bricks encourages us to follow our imagination…who would’ve thought that playing with these toys as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life. It’s proof that anyone else can do it too.”

Piece By Piece is expected to hit theaters on Oct 11.

Pharrell will be producing a new LEGO movie, inspired by his life story. Titled Piece By Piece, it will be told through animation and will be directed by Morgan Neville (Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain), according to Polygon.

“I’m honored to share this with the world and bring people into my universe,” Pharrell shared in a statement, via the outlet. “Building with LEGO bricks encourages us to follow our imagination… who would’ve thought that playing with these toys as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life. It’s proof that anyone else can do it too.”

As it turns out, the project has been in the works for a while. The publication notes that while The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie were very successful, Universal Pictures acquired the rights to LEGO’s IP in 2020.

“Five years ago, Pharrell Williams approached me with the idea of helping him tell his story through LEGO animation,” Neville added. “It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on. I’m grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission. We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film.”

Fans will get to watch Piece By Piece when it hits theaters on October 11. Check out Pharrell‘s announcement below.

Pharrell Williams is about as versatile of a creative force as anybody. It’s rare that any celebrity has the reach and scope of ambition that he does and it extends to numerous different mediums. He’s obviously made is musically in a variety of lanes. After getting his start as a producer in The Neptunes he’s also released music of his own both as a solo artist and with his band N.E.R.D. Lil Yachty Assists Faye Webster On New Single & Music Video “Lego Ring”: Stream

Lil Yachty’s 2023 centered around creative freedom: to expand into psych-pop-rock genres, push more collaborations, grow as a person and artist in his genres of choice, and make the best art possible. Fortunately, it looks like another Atlanta native will help him on that journey in 2024, too. Moreover, Faye Webster just released a new song and music video with Lil Boat titled “Lego Ring,” and it’s a very sweet and balanced cut with a lot of personality. In the visual, both artists play a Rock Band-like rhythm game in a living room with a drum set and guitar, a game which you can actually play online here.

Furthermore, Faye Webster’s light and airy croon matches up very well with Lil Yachty’s high-pitched vibrato, and their vocal effects here go to great lengths to make this a very dreamy song. After all, she is one of Steve Lacy’s main inspirations; how could this be anything less than an alt-indie-R&B jam packed with charisma? Not only that, but there’s some well-produced distortion effects here that give this typically breezy and summery cut a shoegaze-like grit. Actually, it goes pretty far to brand this duo’s unique approach to indie and rock styles, as it’s something that many other bands and musicians attempt to much more jarring results. Of course, it’s quite the cheeky cut, with lyrics that could be as dumbed-down as they are profound.

The official Lego video games were once some of the most popular series on the market. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Indiana Jones were just some of the massively popular IPs that got the Lego treatment.

Meanwhile, The College Dropout is a seminal Kanye West album. The rapper’s debut, it released in 2004 and helped launch West’s rap career after many successful years as a producer. Peaking at #2 in the US, it would be followed by Late Registration a year later. West would conclude his “college” trilogy with Graduation in 2007. Now some enterprising fans have combined their love of Lego and Kanye into a video game.
